  • On Saturday 6 August we went along to the Cider Shed session at Welsh Mountain Cider high in the hills not far from Llanidloes in Mid Wales.
Bill and Chava open their Cider Shed to visitors between 2 - 5pm every 1st and 3rd Saturday from April to October. It's a perfect opportunity to sample their range of ciders made from 100% fresh juice, naturally fermented and aged. And also to listen to some wonderful traditional tunes from the musicians there on the day!
You can also book a place on a tour of the highest cider orchard in the country - the views across the Cambrian Mountains and down into the Severn Valley are just stunning - and there are over 450 varieties of cider, cooking and dessert apple, plus some pear trees, thriving at 1115 feet above sea level which is amazing in itself.
The musicians played three traditional Morris dance tunes for this set. Bill on mandolin, Chava on melodeon, Cornelius on cittern, & Graham on anglo concertina.
    Tunes
    1. The Princess Royal
    2. Young Collins
    3. Shepherd's Hey

What a wonderful, pleasant video! This Irish style fiddler from the States wishes he were there to share some cider and a tune or two. We likely have a few in common, Welsh or not. The first I play a bit differently, the second was a mystery and the third vaguely familiar, all of them adding up to a great set on a gorgeous day. If we make the trip one day we'll be sure to visit that ciderhouse. Hope this years harvest was bountiful and also good to see someones kiddo being properly exposed to the best of life: fresh air, simple living, great uplifting tunes in beautiful surroundings. It's 4:30 AM here and I'll be to bed soon with a couple new tunes on the to-learn list while slumber slowly overtakes my dancing mind - no better life. I'm glad I stumbled across this vid. Again, thanks so much.

Hello from across the water - and thanks for your lovely comment 👍 Welsh Mountain Cider is a really special place - wonderful family, setting and cider! Definitely worth a visit during late Spring to early Autumn if folk are passing through our part of Mid Wales. Last year's apple harvest was amazing here after a very hot summer - the apples really ripened up beautifully, so I think 2022 will have been a good year for cider. The tunes are all Cotswold Morris tunes - very popular in the UK - hope you can pick them up on your fiddle! 🎻🎶😀

Hi Roger, the perfect combination agreed! 👍 Thanks for sharing the video with your Australian FB group, much appreciated. We remember spending a lovely winter and summer Down Under playing with various Morris sides at small festivals near Adelaide and also at the National Folk Festival in Canberra in 1992. Such a long time ago now, but the memories are still very much alive! Wishing you all the best 😀
