Urien Yrechwydd - Welsh Celtic Song

  • Music and vocals by Farya Faraji. This is a song based on a poem from the Book of Taliesin, a Middle-Welsh repository of poems that date back to the Early Middle-Ages, this one in this case believed by some to go back as far as the 6th century. The poem praises a Brythonic leader called Urien of the kingdom of Yrechwydd, whose location is still debated to this date. He is, like Arthur, a paragon of chivalry and heroism, and a leader of the Celts against the migrating Anglo-Saxons.
    Old Welsh lyrics:
Uryen yr echwyd. haelaf dyn bedyd.
lliaws a rodyd y dynyon eluyd.
    Mal y kynnullyd yt wesceryd.
llawen beird bedyd tra vo dy uuchyd.
    lloegrwys ae gwydant pan ymadrodant.
agheu a gawssant a mynych godyant
llosci eu trefret a dwyn eu tudet
ac eimwnc collet a mawr aghyffret
heb gaffel gwaret. rac vryen reget.
Reget diffreidyat clot ior agor gwlat
vy mod yssyd arnat. O pop erclywat
dwys dy peleitrat pan erclywat kat.
kat pan y kyrchynt gwnyeith a wneit.
    English translation:
    Urien of Yrechwydd,
    Most bountiful of Christian,
    Much you bestow
On the men of this land.
    As long as you live.
    Greater is the joy
    To have such a hero,
    Greater is the glory
    Of Urien and his offspring,
    Since he is chieftain,
    Ruler supreme,
    Wayfarers' refuge,
    Powerful champion.
    Lloegr-men* know him
    As they will report:
    Death's what they get
    And pain a-plenty,
    Their dwellings ablaze
    And their garments seized,
    And heavy losses
    And grievous hardship,
    Getting no deliverance
    From Urien of Rheged.

Ur language is literally incomprehensible and deserves no recognition.
      You and ur “words” represent more that of the babblings of pigs and the vicious screeches of crows;
rather than a completely structured and balanced language; Like Greek or Roman.
Greek is the superior language and the barbarian tongue of which you speak is savage and wrong.
You are barely different to ur anglisc neighbors who you hate, despite you both being barbarous savages.
“Greek is the most pleasant language and the most fitting for humans. If you observe the words used by other peoples in their languages, you will see that some closely resemble the wailing of pigs, others the sound of frogs, others the call of the woodpecker.” Galen Of Pergamon

    • @drlca6601

@@mmanu6126 welsh is an amalgam of proto-celtic and Latin. If there were Knights of the Round Table, they would've spoken multiple language including chiefly Latin as the official language of court, but also Old Welsh, Cornish, Old Irish, Pictish, etc., etc, as they would've been a multi-ethnic alliance attempting to stave off Anglo-Saxon domination. I would love to see a series tackle this time period in the vein of Arthur movie with Clive Owen, but not as cheesy and more a spiritual successor to Rome.

The Scottish from the west below Loch Lomond down to Dumfries share an ancient genealogical bond with the Welsh dating back thousands of years when they formed the kingdom of Cumbria, that was ruled by an ancient Welsh royal dynasty. The area around modern day Greenock & govan up the river Clyde was a seat of power for these ancient Welsh kings from their seat on the top of Dumbarton rock. God bless my Welsh brothers !

My most favorite rendition of the song is the track "Dream of Albion" from the soundtrack of Medieval II Total War Kingdoms, the videogame that defined my childhood.
