  • A drinking problem is not necessarily the end of a pilot's career. In fact, for decades the FAA has been quietly sending pilots diagnosed as substance abusers back to work. It's called the Human Intervention Motivation Study (or HIMS). And, before you panic, consider this: it's one of the most successful rehab programs ever, and is drawing interest for dealing with substance abuse in other industries as well. Tony Dokoupil reports.

Triple the limit for flying...hmm, one would think a zero tolerance...astounding.

As a pilot they're extremely motivated people and personalities to begin with somewhat above the general public by their intellect and drive. The success of a program that involves particularly that group doesn't surprise me.

Beeing a pilot was my dream job, I do not think I would break that rule if I got my dream job but would be nice flying a plane and getting a little bit HIGHER.

Scary to think that these pilots are taking 100+ people into the skies, lives they are responsible for from when the wings go up till they return to ground.... and they're incapacitated due to alcohol or other substances.

They gave up there bus driving career for a pilots career, too many drunks on the road.

Beware of over confidence. Hold on to your sobriety. Someone close to me died in his forties because he didn't. No one should be enabled to take down passengers due to addiction. One slip is all it would take. Another profession may be better for everyone involved.

I would much rather fly with someone like Captain Prouse, who has a deep understanding, and awareness of himself than most people will ever know.

I so hate the American private sector. Absolutely unconscionable. And given a second chance. No, no, no. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The death penalty is all the evidence you need of the public sectors decrepit morals.
