A net to save lives

- The Golden Gate Bridge, a beautiful landmark in San Francisco Bay, has an ugly side. Nearly 1,700 have committed suicide from the bridge since its opening in 1938. Last year, 39 people jumped. But that toll may be coming to an end. Families and loved ones of those who took their own lives - as well as those who tried to commit suicide but survived - have won their fight to have a safety net erected on the bridge. John Blackstone reports.

A net a good idea.
But we all could just be nicer to each other.
I almost did suicide a bunch of times cause of bullying.
Can we all be nicer to each other?
I Hope things are better today for you.
Marie Madison because the devil waits for someone in a split second of weakness to devour them. This net may not save everyone but it will save many
Bullying will never end.
It is going to take until 2021 to install a net? 4 years for a simple construction and $200 million? Can we say "bureaucracy"?
California at it's finest.
but it's a really NICE net! ...gold lace maybe...Hey California! I will only charge $100 million...HALF PRICE NET SALE!!!!!
Robert Rodgers Mark my words, it will be over budget and take longer then they say...
LIBERALISM.
Roberto Insingo both!!
If someone wants to go, they’ll find a way.
MS 37 true but this is one less way
As long as they go "alone".
the bay bridge
Yeah. If they want to leave this world so badly they will finds a way x
@Roberto Insingo Hello. I just read your comment on UA-cam. I'm not sure exactly what you were referring to when you said you might end it next winter, but since the topic was suicide I really hope that you are still here on this Earth with us. I pray that whatever was happening in your life has gotten better. If you think that nobody cares, your absolutely wrong. Lots of people care. Just reach out. Please call 1-800-273-8255. 💜
I can just imagine some person out there saying "welp my plan to commit suicide on the bridge isn't going to work anymore, guess i'll just live my life"
It will save lives!!!!!!!!
you can not imagine it but the fact is there is a large % of the ones who were stopped and helped from jumping that never took there own life. that information is on the video of kevin brigs who jumped and survied.ua-cam.com/video/63WQo5ca63w/v-deo.html
@@donlarue8254 keep telling yourself that
A net??? A person that is dead set on killing themselves will do it some other place. Where do you stop? Put nets on all tall bridges, cliffs, buildings. Suicide is very unfortunate, but it will always happen.
Bob Silver calling Dr optimism ..
@@moonglow785 he's just being blunt and brutally honest about it. Suicide is harsh.
at least they are trying to keep that beloved american icon from being used in that form. it known better for a place to go to end it rather than a historic bridge
unfortunate, but true.
I agree
The thought just occurred to me. What’s to stop someone hitting the net…then just running off the NET into the water???
This will not stop suicides, just move them somewhere else.
A net is just one idea to help prevent people who are suicidal from killing themselves, but for the problem to be fully addressed, we must honestly look at why or how a person gets suicidal and loses the will to live, so we can help people see the value of their lives. What are your thoughts about that?
Why don’t they just build a higher fence by the rail to make it so they can’t just jump off? Impulse control. It’s strange. The aesthetic argument is just ridiculous...It’s just a bridge, that will eventually be replaced.
Right? Even tall plexiglass with holes for taking pictures
It should start with the community taking mental health more seriously and having more options for people available. a net won't solve the problem
I bet stopping pedestrian traffic would greatly reduce the suicide rate.
Ryan, stop making sense! You're ruining the conversation here. (LMAO)
I can be so naive. I thought the "net" this title referred to was a social support net--friends, family, neighbors all there to show support, be there when people feel alone and hopeless.
Nope, that would be too much work. The "net" they're talking about is an inanimate piece of plastic (or some other material) that might catch jumpers at the end of their ropes--maybe financially 'cause they can't afford life anymore or who've been told by others to save themselves, or get over it... Guess the reasoning is you can put up a net to make it seem like you give a damn and then you can feel good about yourself for doing something about it. Just so long as you don't have to actually talk to the losers. Errm, I mean, the sick people.
As with any suicide or suicide attempt, there is always that last minute "Maybe I should have rethought this", assuming the net works as planned, there will be more time to rethink, and a chance to change what brought it about. Not all suicide methods give you time to ponder the outcome of your "hasty" decisions though. I can honestly say that when my time comes, the method I have planned won't give me time to do anything except drop..............
I hope you stay here on the planet with the rest of us you matter and seem very insightful and thoughtful in your comment. We need you here!
After I watched the documentary 'The Bridge' back in 2006 I was quite appalled at the extent of this problem and at what a harrowing documentary this was. A real 'no holds barred' revelation of the truth. Then during 2008 one of my pilot colleagues walked across the Golden Gate in both directions but encountered a small problem on the return leg. This required him to have to stop and change his shoes ... towards the parapet rather than the road and for a number of minutes. The Feds swooped on him within an extremely short length of time as he had been seen stopped in the same spot near the parapet on CCTV for 'too long' and they had decided to investigate. Now that is what I call precautions being taken and lessons being learned. Sadly there is no stopping everyone: Suicide is an ever present fact of life these days. But there is minimising it's impact or at least providing a visual deterrent to dissuade those who are thinking about it from going ahead and trying. RIP to the 39 jumpers last year who didn't survive. Like I said not every case will be prevented but at least bear in mind how this number was lower than what 2005 / 2006 was like. IIRC 57 jumps 2 survived.
It's a half a suicide net....if you look at 5:18 rendering you see a substantial fall into an unforgiving stainless steel net with steel crossbeams. You jump, you break a leg. Either way you are in greater agony.
There are other bridges that don't have a suicide barrier. The George Washington bridge in New York city.
Sadly, I'm thinking this will cause a rush to be one of _the last_ to freely Jump.
sparhopper I know! The jumpers have numbers and the list is out there
Such a beautiful bridge.
House Jawn Isn't it? Perhaps it's beauty drives some people mad, mad enough to end it all.
What's to stop someone from using a rope to climb down to the suicide barrier from the bridge railing. Then jumping off the suicide barrier into the water?
Psilocybin can save lives. Saved me wasn't neccesarily pleasant but was wake up I needed.
Maybe she didn’t want to marry a dork and feared that she would because of her talents. High school gives you a vision of either hope or despair of the future.
Im surprised the fall is fatal.
House Jawn water is like concrete at 220 ft, this water is extremely cold, the tides are very strong here, and not everyone can swim. Probably not initial fall in many cases.
The fall is like jumping off a 24 story building onto concrete
Falling from 55 metres into water could result in death from a number of ways because of the way people hit the water. Shock is one of the biggest killers behind drowning in these cases - including what's known as 'being winded' on sudden contact with a 'new' and 'unnatural' environment for human life. Sadly impact trauma on it's own rarely kills jumpers outright but combines with other factors resulting in death. However some have been lucky to avoid the combination of factors through some way or another and survived.
Most of the time it is fatal...and sometimes it's not weirdly.Go to google Pass Kall, and look up (without quotes) Windsor boy jumps from golden gate bridge". Basically he jumped from the bridge while on a field trip. He was poked on by friends to do it as a dare. He did. he survived. Typically if you hit the water from 200 ft above it is like hitting concrete.
@Pasta Chocolate Hi. I have heard that name before but I am going to follow your advice and look at this story again. Just in case I have forgotten the true facts since I heard about this. Both remarkable and lucky that this person avoided the 'killer combination' of factors enabling him to survive. Still annoyed that this was done as a dare because as an Air Ambulance senior pilot that could possibly have been me attending the scene and others of my 'genre' did have to tend to this! Keep well and have a nice day :o)
Adding the net is a preventive measure, wait until u lose your loved ones or friends off the bridge then you will wish that you could have done something to prevent them
It’s 2021 where it at?
Good for her! YES! Now we need to work on the root of the problem - what is making all these people feel so worthless or what pain can they not name that would make them want to end their lives? Some answers may seem so simple but at least this will give them pause and think, as the people in this video have stated, "Someone cares enough to give me a second chance -maybe I'm not so worthless after all." But one that I face is that of possible homelessness - though I'm not suicidal I am prone to depression and become "inert" Someone may ask the filmmaker of the movie The Bridge to allow showings for donations to shelters and suicide prevention efforts. Just a thought.
3 Years ago. They don't want that net there.
If can’t put up a net than should stop people from walking on the bridge
They need to build 30 nets down to 4 ft above the water. Net cost 2 million and Pelosi and family pocketed $198 million!
Not a net. They would have to build a lower bridge to avoid the fall from killing them
Build the net...We will just find another bridge.
I still say it's cursed. Like that forest in Japan.
Do you believe in voodoo also, nitwit?
its true
Yes I've heard people say they felt like spirits calling them down. Those are demon spirits disguised
why not invest the money into preventing people from killing themselves? offer more help out there. perhaps you can attach some signs to the net like: we love you, don't do it. your family will be forever hurt and burdened. Something like that to change their minds
what about the guy who did it and lived? 1st thought after jumping was regret. Kevin Heinz.
The bridge buddies safety patrol do an amazing thankless job of saving lives on that bridge every day
newsflash....they'll just find another way
they pass OTHER bridges to get to this one. I think it's worth it.
That net looks like it could just be leapt over.
I'll just jump twice
how you going to keep people from jumping in front of a car or using a rope or the countless other ways? at least the bridge is safer and cleaner for others. the money would be better spent on mental health; if that even works.
If not the bridge it will be something else.
What about 24 hr surveillance? I know I know expense but when suspicious activity is noted someone arrives. This could be run by volunteers like the suicide hotline. Again won’t save everyone but surveillance patrol & net it will save many
i'm sorry but that net, can't they just crawl to the edge and still jump?
Put a fence up like they have on the exspress ways have. But there will always be other bridges.
Is the net here yet? 👀
Why do they want to force suicidal people to live? What if they can't get the help they need?
as i recall i thought i also saw a fence going up as well.
Im happy that the net is on the bridge but what happens when the jumpers land in the net?? Wont they just jump or role off the nett or do they think the jumpers are gonna have a drastic change of heart that makes them realize they actually wont to go on living. If somebody can elaberate on this and comment to me im much abliged
Thomas Whites Orbs Paranormal Witness It might work out like the man who attempted to jump and they’ll hit the net and realize that it was a bad idea. At least, that’s the idea.
Plus how do you get them off the net. Just extend the original railing vertically
did they put up the nets yet?
Well done.
what if the person climbs over the net?
So if I plan to buy a gun and put said gun to head, can I get like 17 million $ to build a net around my head? WTF really, I'm sorry it's such a messed up thing but the world is a dangerous and unforgiving environment, this seems like a waste of money
Excellent analogy!
With a net, there are probably going to be idiots who will jump for fun knowing a net is there to keep them from death.
I’m still confused- are there not other places to jump? If a net is put up people will just go jump from someplace else. There isn’t any anything that makes the Golden Gate any more or less deadly. This is just a colossal waste of money
Blessings and prayers are with them all🌹🥀🌷
Why don’t they just make the water softer?
What if she was pushed? Doesn't make sense
1700 people is not that many people.Compare that to the number of people overdosing on Heroin everyday. I don't think it will stop them, they'll just go somewhere else.
All of that money is just being wasted. People will just go somewhere else to commit suicide. People are so stupid.
maybe in a different era well have churches serving LSD ceremonies and preachers who really heal people.
Put up some "newly painted" signs on the railing.
Seems these people smile and nobody knows what or why.
The society is sick
A net won’t stop suicide they can just roll of or find another place to end it., if they want to go they’ll go, its upsetting to hear.
They will jump off the net
Interesting that 1700 people have died simce the bridge opened in 1937.which equals roughly 0.585 people per month in the 83 years its been open. And yet it takes less than 5 days to reach that amount in the number of abortions performed in CA alone (364/day according to a website I checked that keeps track of these numbers) and there is no safety net for those innocents who cannot speak for themselves. ^^I don’t include the websites name because I am not tech savvy enough to know about what I have to do or say when using info from a website. Probably nothing but it’s not worth the trouble.
“And they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the destroyers.” Psalm 106:37
There is already a barrier to stop people from jumping. It's called a railing. I will be back in 2021 when they are still jumping with the net in place.
Waste of tax money. Yosemite is just a few hours away. Plenty of places to jump there.
The net would kind of ruin the beauty of the bridge, also it's not a solution. Why not have a undercover police patrol?
Tara O'Reilly Police cant be in every place. Also that would be even more expensive than the net
How much is the net going to cost? I don't know how much an undercover police presence would cost but it might be as expensive as a net or less, and it wouldn't involve changing the appearance of the bridge.
There are already bridge buddies stopping people they still can't stop every one
So they see the net and find another way to do try one on one with the person.
These individuals are brave but stupid.I watch videos of the distance down.I cringe.I will continue to fight on.
Hate to be a party pooper but, isn’t up to the individual if he or she wants to die?
😢
What price would you put on your child, friend, wife, boyfriend she says but she is saying the masses must pay for others. Playing the devils advocate how far would that money go towards, children going hungry every night, the homeless, cancer research?
When it effects you personally you are all for spending tax payers money but there is only so much so where do we spend it to benefit the most?
if my friend dies from cancer it's a no brainer that's where it should go, many more die every day from cancer than suicide.
I feel sorry for these people that have lost loved ones but I feel sorry for those that wanted to live but no cure for their illness.
Cancer research is very well funded. Suicide....not so much.
@Ella Jones Spoken like a real cause of the problem. Congrats.
That singer is a milltion times better than Taylor Swift or any other country singers that have made a name.
Galenicals Everyone is better than Taylor Swift.
Unfortunately In this shallow, superficial world, beauty seems to be more important for success than actual talent.
Real artists 🎨 get shelved wack ones get famous
😂
No sense in trying to protect the ones who want to die
1st: Wow, Nancy Pelosi Actually Cares about Americans.
2nd: this net idea is bascally was is used in China factories from stopping workers killing themselves. But this net will show that we care about people.
