Awesome catches! You were lucky to see almost all of the Ex-NS SD70 series that were sold to Progress Rail. Ever since NS had money problems last year, they literally slashed more than 500 of there locomotives. Infact, you were also lucky you caught CSX 1601; its the last Genset CSX has (Even though it was retired in 2019).

I was wondering about 1601! I had never seen one like it before, very glad I did catch it! And I wish I had of photographed more NS, took 5 charges of DJI batteries just to get what I did haha, follow me on Facebook at Micah Turner Photography, and friend me! I’ll be posting some of the photos there 😊

I find it mildly ironic seeing a clean 45-year-old GP40-2 mated with a 50+ year-old GP35 carcass switching freight cars next to a deadline of SD70Ms, SD70MACs, SD80MACs, SD60Ms, SD60Is, and dozens more early 3rd generation and late 2nd generation EMD's that are half their age.

Almost all the SD80MACs had their sides completely cut off but one remained intact. The SD80MACs were the backbone of NS, but the AC44C6Ms took away the title from the SD80MACs and the SD80MACs, shown here which are at Progress Rail facilities in Roanoke, Virginia and Raceland, Kentucky. 10 SD80MACs are in the lease yard shown here.

Unbelievable how many locomotives are laid up 😫 But if there’s no work for them it’s a sad ending for these great powerful machines. Hopefully some will get a new lease of life but I’m sure more modern locomotives are environmentally better and more fuel efficient 🤔 We have the same in the U.K. with old locomotives laid up rotting away in yards but not as many as the US 🇺🇸 being a small country lol 😆 Some have been repurposed because of strict emissions we can’t get a eco engine in our small loading gauge 🙄 Take care when your out and about Buddy 🤩 Cheers Stevie a U.K. rail fan 😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    CSX 2308 is a road slug made out of a GP-30 as are 2216, 2232, 2254, 2261, 2285.
    CSX 2204, 2212, 2279, 2282, 2301, 2314, 2345, 2353, 2377 are ones made from a GP-35.

I remember as a kid in the 90s walking over the over pass with my day who was a security guard at the time and watch all the trains coming and going under my feet. Another piece of enjoyment I remember about the Russel rail yards before they closed down was not only was it the biggest rail yard on this side of the USA but all the way up until 2000 every year on the birthday of Russel ky the CSX rail yard there would give a tour of the railyard and even let people ride on one of the trains for I think it was 5 or 10 bucks and all the money made from that tour went to a good cause if I'm not mistaken it was to workers who where no longer able to work because of things that happened to them while working on the railroad or something like that. The last one I went to was when I was 10 or 11 and now I'm 33 so my memory isn't to perfect but I have pictures of me as a kid ridding on a CSX diesel with bunch of other kids and adults. Actually, surprisingly to me anyways, it is an AC44CW, and as of last week CSX pulled it out of storage to rebuild it to a modern AC44CM from what I’ve heard

@@officialnewyork_railfan6822 Yup, to be rebuilt as an AC44CM I believe and placed back in storage. It’s unknown if it will keep its Spirit title. It’s assumed that 600 and 601 will be as well

Most of all the horns have been removed? Why is this theft?

I’m not sure, I’d say on CSXs behalf, if looters got to stealing parts, the horn would be the first to go

As of right now, [..csx..] AC44C6M #602 the Spirit of Maryland as it is affectionately known is in the AC44CM program with #601 the Spirit of Waycross.
