At first glance the Honor 8 looks like a glass version of the Huawei P9, they have the same dual cameras, 5.2” Full HD display, battery size and they are even running the same UI. Let's see if it's worth spending a couple hundred dollars more on the P9 or if the Honor 8 is the clear choice.
Huawei makes some of my favorite smartphones, their sister brand Honor used to come out with similarly spec'ed devices that were nowhere near as sophisticated looking as their more expensive counterparts. That's not what's happening with the Honor 8 whose design and finish are more similar to the premium aesthetic of Samsung with it's 15 layers giving the 8 a stunning shine. By contrast the P9 whose 2.5D glass front has a more understated elegance. Both devices run EMUI 4.1 on Android 6.0, sport the same size size battery, offer a MicroSD card for expansion, have a 2.5 inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, although I did notice a pretty big difference in color temperature, but you can adjust it in the settings to get the display's looking virtually identical.
Being all metal the P9 is a little heavier but comes in a touch thinner than the 8. Under the hood there is a slight difference in processor but in everyday use I've not been able to decern a performance difference when spinning through the UI opening and closing apps. The P9 offers a bit more punch in terms of being able to multitask and open large applications or games, but both processors do offer a premium experience.

yeah..i own p9 for a two weeks and trade in for honor 8,i did it because i have a very good experience using honor 6,and damn glad i sold p9...honor 8 gave me longer batery life,quick charger fon and a lightning fast system...its cheaper too...i am so satisfied with it...

I have a p9. get a decent tpu clear case. they're known to turn yellow but my p9 is gold so I can't tell!

Spend $10 on a clear case, with rugged bumper. Add a glass screen protector or a Skinomi for $10-15. The $230 you save can then go towards a huge micro SD card and a night out.
The honor 8 has a lot of little compromises over the p9: The screen is dimmer, The camera has the same hardware, but not the same image processing, etc, etc.
The p9 has seen some serious price drops, so I think that the p9 is the better choice.

the p9 leika lenses are millions of times better than those sony lenses, but 99.9% of buyers dont know anything about photography or cameras and lenses, so they say "it's the same".
MrBluePants excuse me, and where do you thik leica implemented his lenses? The module of camera is the same sony on theese 2 phones. I installed p9 original stock camera app on my honor and it looks like the quality of the photo are the same of p9, also now i can take raw photos!
great video! I recently came across both phones and couldn't figure out their exact differences, so your video really helps. lol i find myself leaning towards the Honor 8 a bit more, although the Leica camera on the P9 is pretty slick. Where did you get that clear case for your Honor 8?

P9 is more heating during holding in hand. H8 is warmer too but less.
I'd go for the P9, simply for the more rigid metal body. Could you make a followup video on your surface book? I'm curious if the batterylife has changed a lot for you by the time, or if the fucrum hinge got more loose.
This price range is so fucking hard to choose! If you put 50$ more you get something better and then lose something. Also why they have to make shiny back covers?

+legend you'll get Kirin 955 for P9 but less RAM than Honor 8 but in 8 you'll just get Kirin 950 but in return you're having 4gb RAM in either version . Also P9 does have 4gb version of RAM but with 64gb internal which will cost you more
Oh and I forgot to mention that the 32gb version of P9 is the same cost now, as Honor 8 64gb in Europe.
whats not mentioned is the reason leica is a big deal with the p9 is the film modes that simulate the look you get from leica cameras; Dark areas carry a purplish quality as lighter areas have a reddish affect that does look unique in images, especially those with deep contrast. The monochrome lens is exclusive to the p9, which no other camera phone has. Filters dont match what real monochrome can look like. and lastly even though Sunny Optical provides the camera components, namely the sensors from Sony, leica does provide the Summarit lenses. So, if youre into photography the p9 offers the better phone.
This was such a hard decision for me! I was in the market for a new phone because I dropped my previous one shattering the front screen. Come to think of it all my phone replacements have been because of accidental cracks in the screen in addition to inadequacies with the phone itself (i.e. no front facing camera). As much as I love the honor 8's design and the fact that the fingerprint scanner is a smart button I just could not afford to drop the phone. Knowing myself, that reality was bound to happen and even with a case I know it would crack somewhere. I am happy to say that I just bought the P9 for $349 USD. Since the prices are coming down I can't say that I am all that mad about buying the P9 over the honor but again this was such a hard decision and I'll have to wait to see if I made the right one when my new baby comes on November 11 :D
Nice Video!! I like the Honor much more but i just don't understand the weird Strategy of Huawei!!! First they launch an expensive P9 and after 4 months they launch Honor 8 which is Basically the same device with much better design (For me at least) and IR Blaster for almost Half the price!! And both phones are in US so why would someone buy a P9 for double the price mainly just for Metal Design??
P and Mate are the two flagship of Huawei, they are high-end products, such as samsung S and Note. Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei, which are middle-end products, the price is cheaper, the materials such as screen etc. maybe lower quality than P and Mate. PS.I am Chinese.

Hi Nicole, I too love Huawei phones, I've had the P6, P7, P8 and Honor 7. The Honor 7 being my favourite over the P8 due to the battery. Here in the UK I can get the Honor 8 for £369.99 unlocked or the Huawei P9 for £379.99 through my carrier (Possibly locked) would you say the clear winner would be the P9 or would the Honor still be a contender when there is only £10.00 in it? Use the Honor 8 and use a clear slim TPU case and either a 2.5D glass screen protector or a film one. I love the naked look of my Honor 8 but I've had it for 3 days and there's already micro scratches on the back and I haven't dropped it once so yeah.

Dammit, The monochrome sensor is not for taking pictures but just for depth. The monochrome pictures are taken by the RGB camera and then the monochrome camera adds depth but it never works alone!

I got the VVIA(TM) Dual Layer Armor Hard Slim Hybrid Kickstand Phone Cover Case for my Honor 8 from Amazon... It's a rugged case kind of, so it hides the beauty of the phone... but it gives it the needed protection ;)

a lot, if you check the video that's how far into the orange I needed to be. I also pulled the P9 into the cooler tones as that display is actually quite red.
Honor 8 has a dedicated monochorme lens, swipe right on camera app and scroll down in modes. Last mode is monochrome.

The components such as screen and the lens of P9 are better than Honor 8. If the price difference is more than 150 USD in your region, maybe Honor 8 is a good choice.
Yeah, it's just $80 difference in most of the regions. honor 8 was specifically targeted towards the US where the Samsung phones rule. And their timing was quite good as well with that explode feature on the Note 7

P9 has better qualities photo because it use Leica lens which two times better than sony lens. But considering the price, i think honor 8 totally worth the money

I am not impressed with honor 8 at all. That phone is all about the looks. Very fragile phone that doesn't offer features that glass phone should to justify it's fragility. Samsung's phones do and that is big difference between them. Huawei made mistake with too high price with P9 and nor is trying to recover sales with this one. Except looks I can't imagine why anyone would choose this featureless S copy over OP3 or Axon 7.
What about a clear rugged or grip case? might still look nice ;)

Definetly P9 in my opinion, but in the end it depends on what you like more. Aluminium or glas.

I liked the p9 more since I love stable strong hardware ...
So I have seen this phone for $288 with extra cases and gifts and for just the phone $275 these days. However it seems the glass is fragile. On forums folks note just normal daily use results in small cracks. This is preventing me from buying the phone even at these low prices.
you have to invest the money in the tempered glass protection, that's they only way I can get behind buying this handset
Mobilegeeks.de well for me that is a design flaw. Why buy a beautiful phone like this and have to worry (more than usual for other phones) about the screen and body getting scratched up. In general I prefer to not use a case or cover on the screen.

what about the wifi connection. I see some review the wifi on honor 8 sometimes not stable. For me it's a deal breaker.

I bought it. My first impression? Coming from a Redmi Note 3SD user, the device is small but the display is sharp. Many reviews will talk about features and comparison in terms of footprint, speed etc. Sound quality? Redmi Note 3 SD better but with a good BT like Java Move, hardly notice any difference.
And one important thing, both SIM slot support 4G but only the one chosen for data will be 4G whereas the other will shift to 2G. I think it's Huawei's way to save battery, which is true because you don't need 4G if not using for data. Hence whenever one of them chosen for data, the other will auto shift to 2G network.
And I recommended to get proper case immediately because this unit is really slippery.
Verdict? I like the footprint, nice display and camera is much better than my previous devices. USB type-c interface means I had go out and bought a few spare type-c cables for the house, car and office.

The difference is also in hardware; the gpu is twice as slow as in P9. Look up the benchmarks. As for pictures, the cameras are identical so there can't be any difference. To answer your question about cases: you can get a thicker transparent case which will offer more protection.
