Ooh, so the second sensor *does* provide a boost in image quality. Maybe it was the ever present disconnect between engineering and marketing that may have caused the confusion about its performance, but it really does have a purpose. Thanks Juan, for clearing that up!
The thing is, the concept is a bit difficult to market. Most people don't know what dynamic range is, so the marketing was limited to 'two cameras must surely be better than one'.
really love the audio section of your reviews. I am looking forward to buying a Mate 8. Could you please say anything about the audio quality of mate 8 ?
Juan, when will you guys do another Top 5 Cameras of 2016? Since nearly all the phones of the year have been released outside of the iPhone, Googles new phones, and the V20.
Just picked up the special edition blue this weekend. So far so good, much faster than my Nexus 6p, who was suffering from battery issues on Nougat and BT issues since launch. I'm also enjoying the smaller size that isn't pulling my pants down while I walk.
Got this phone last month. Absolutely loving it. Fingerprint sensor is great, UI upgrade is really good, camera is amazing and the phone flies through everyday activities with a respectable amount left in the tank at the end of the day. If you're angling for something other than the Honor 9, this is the phone to get.
There was once an female Indian reviewer (HeelsAndTech and later Uoobe Vid) who was the benchmark of what an objective reviewer is. Since then, I have been disappointed with reviewers who fail in that department. I can finally say I have an absolute favorite reviewer and his name Juan. You have been doing a stellar job providing comprehensive and objective tests. Thank you and keep up the good work, man!
Awesome review man. And btw, unless things changed, you can turn off the notifications about the "this app is consuming battery, please check it out" stuff. I know they were unbelievably annoying on the honor 7, it was a much more relaxing experience when I turned it off and the battery life didn't really suffer tremendously because of it.
Oh you totally can, I was just making a point about how Honor/Huawei have designed the phone out of the box. If this review wasn't already running long, I probably should have shown more how to disable that.
In amount of useful information , MKBHD is really lacking a lot. He is a casual phone reviewer. He just have best presentation and extremely crispy videos. And he is awesome dude.
Well, MKBHD is good in delivering the bottom line without going into too much detail. Guys like Juan are great if you are interested in the nitty-gritty.
Juan Bagnell, your review is great as always but it would be nicer if you add one thing more. Some people, just like me, use smartphone as a navigator while driving, and I used to have problem with some phones that has trouble capturing GPS signal. So, I strongly suggest you add GPS signal strength testing to your review. Hope you do not mind my request. Thanks.
It's an absolutely stunning phone tbh. Huawei is really upping their game in every aspect. I had a g510 a couple of years ago, hatted EMUi, but I'm really thinking of giving the company another try with the p9. All in all, they're becoming serious competition to the top companies currently. :)
Hey Juan, any update on whether the lens quality in the Honor 8 is as good as the P9? I remember from the P9 review in the "creepy tunnel" shot, the lens quality was clearly very high on the P9. Did you happen to reproduce that shot with the Honor 8 to see if the lens was of similar quality? Thanks!
@pocketnow- Thanks for the most helpful review. I'm confused between oneplus3 and this phone. You've mentioned that its audio performance is inferior from One plus 3. Could you please tell me if this is the deal braker? and also which has the better camera. Thanks in advance. Cheers
Within 2 months of getting this phone, I had screen display problems. It glitches and has lots of lines on the screen which sometimes results in me not being able to use the touch-screen, before that I really liked the phone. So frustrating.
For Bluetooth, when paired with an Android Wear device, I have found that I have to turn off the media portion of the connected speaker from the bluetooth settings and then turn it back on to get audio out. I have to do this every time with my Phone (not a Honor 8) so this may be a general failing of Android.
On the contrary, I find the super aggressive battery mode very cool - the one that cuts everything android and launch a low level interface - It is very use-full, if you need to take it on long trekking trips ( > 4 days without charger )
Waiting for my Hauwei honor Note with the 6,6 Inch, this Time I will use a case and try to use anti break glass protection, my mate 7 Broke yesterday when it fell down and it broke Heavely and I cant enjoy the phone anymore I try to avoid looking on the screen, sad that I have to stick with it around for more then 1 month untill I have enough money to get a new phone...
0:49 " ..... and above the screen, we have a respectable 8 MEGAPICKLE selfie camera " :)))) Thanks for the LOLZ....watching this in the morning and it made my day for some reason. Keep up the good work !
I wasn't going to pass on this phone all together, but I fiddled with it for a little bit in a Best buy and I think I really like it. Not to mention it's cheaper than some of my other options. I can deal with the UI (I'll probably slap Nova launcher on it anyway) and the camera looks great
Thank you so much for the bluetooth analysis, which is severely lacking in ALL other tech channels. almost to the point of deal breaker for me with that flaw.
What's up with the screen on time with this device? My honor 8 won't get more than 4h I reckon. All reviewers but you talk about stellar 8h+ of screen on! Bug or hardware fault? Any fixes?
Does the photo came out monochrome if u block the coloured sensor? Itll be cool if u can answer this question on your next video. Thnx again n ur style of video is great.
PLEASE RESPOND! HOW DID YOU SWITCH THE BACK AND BACKGROUND APPS BUTTONS?! THE ONES NEXT TO THE HOME BUTTON. I CANNOT STAND THE WAY THEY CURRENTLY ARE! (I want the back button on the right and the background button on the left.)
If this has more features, an extra gig of ram and more or less the same processor, why is it considered a "midranger" while the p9 is a "flagship"? Is it based solely on price? Because if so that's stupid. Also, it's worth mentioning this is the best phone you can buy from Honor, it's not like their holding anything back, so it should be considered a flagship in my opinion.
I don't think the term stupid discredits the very valid point I made, you're just dancing around the question now. At least I didn't ask you if it was worth it!
when you do reviews can you add how the phone manufacturer does on andriod updates. A new phone can get old fast them google release new updates and the new phone you got is left behind
I actually don't. I would be very torn if I had to decide between the P9 and the Honor 8 now, but I'm perfectly happy with my P9. I prefer the metal back, because I think it feels better than glass and obviously it attracts *way* less fingerprints
Fantastic video as usual Juan!! Indeed a great phone, and a top contender on the budget side... Would be great having moer options like this.... Kinda remind me of what Sony used to do with their "compact" models
BT seems weird on almost all Android devices. Nexus 6p was much worse, with audio cutting out every other second. my Honor 8 did disconnect once from my car, but so did my Samsung 7 edge on a daily basis. At least when it's connected, sound is clear and no cut outs.
Good review. Very informative. I'm looking for a low price android device to use along with my daily driver. Which is the iPhone 6s Plus soon to be the 7 plus.
I'm gonna be getting this or the p9 I'm kinda excited I've been using HTC or Nokia for the last few years so I'm thinking of trying something different:) *fingers crossed*
On the same boat here! The thing that sucks is that the whole world has it now pretty much, except for Australia. Honor is selling the product in the US, Europe, Middle East and of course Asia. Looks like we have to import it from there. Apparently, Oppomart is doing it for reasonable price. Not too sure how good they are, since so many mixed opinions about Oppomart.
MrClassified123 I wouldn't trust Oppomart..too many mixed reviews. The only potential risk with importing from overseas is that it may not support all our local GSM bands, so it may not work perfectly depending on what network you're with.
+Nikka M Most of these China phones support B1/B3/B7 which are the Australian bands. Since Australia doesn't use weird bands :) If u check out a lot of UA-camrs getting review units, alot of them come from Oppomart. Those videos are sponsored by Oppomart alot. So it is a little confusing as to why others give it bad review. Check out Gizmochina (not sure if it's related to Gizmodo) and especially a guy called Linus (also has his own channel, he is one of the main reviewers for them). They always get units from Oppomart. Some other UA-camrs may get it from Gearbest as well, which also has mixed reviews. Decisions decisions...
MrClassified123 Good to know about the bands. I know the OP3 didn't support the next generation bands from Telstra and Optus so I wasn't sure. Maybe Oppomart give the tech reviewers the genuine products knowing they have UA-cam channels lol. I dont trust GearBest either, I ordered a power bank from them once and it never arrived. Give it a go with Oppomart..if you can afford to potentially lose $600. If I didn't already upgrade my phone this year, I might have gambled with Oppomart..I had tax return money to burn lol.
+Nikka M Telstra and Optus use band 28 for longer range 4G and most phones don't have compatibility. You can either go without the band (the phone will still use 4g where the other bands are in use) or go with Vodafone as they don't use band 28.
Nice video! Which is best - Huawei honor 8 Vs Huawei p10 lite im getting a new phone (i have an alcatel one touch Go play, so anything is an up grade, really ) And the price isnt badly different But idk which one to buy? Someone help 😂😂
this and the Axon 7 are both great values, and other than the camera, the Axon 7 seems to be an even better deal. The Chinese are starting to build amazing world class phones.
The "midranger" is better and cheaper than the "topranger". OK.
Yup. Seriously cool time for mid price phones.
Panino Manino running better than my Nexus 6p ever did.
i love that you test the quality when listening to headphones! most reviews just cover the speakers.
8 Megapickles !
YUM!
Megapickles had me dying
They are MEGA sour!!
Ooh, so the second sensor *does* provide a boost in image quality. Maybe it was the ever present disconnect between engineering and marketing that may have caused the confusion about its performance, but it really does have a purpose.
Thanks Juan, for clearing that up!
Yup. I just couldn't believe that the extra sensor was inert, or just there simply to be a marketing gimmick.
The thing is, the concept is a bit difficult to market. Most people don't know what dynamic range is, so the marketing was limited to 'two cameras must surely be better than one'.
Using this in 2017. Still among my fav phones
Really enjoying mine so far. I'm also glad that my version doesn't have all of the manufacturer tagging below the Honor brand on the back.
really love the audio section of your reviews. I am looking forward to buying a Mate 8. Could you please say anything about the audio quality of mate 8 ?
This phone is currently on sale for $299.99. At that price it becomes very VERY hard to beat.
Juan, I think you might be The go-to Camera Guy. Fantastic review👍👍
I get goofy about a lot of stuff, but I take Audio and Camera tech VERY seriously.
Juan, when will you guys do another Top 5 Cameras of 2016? Since nearly all the phones of the year have been released outside of the iPhone, Googles new phones, and the V20.

Kind words much appreciated :-)
Great video! I have a question, what kind of stylus do you use? That thing looks pretty cool.
First!
What is your favourite phone?
+Ethan's Life LG razor
+Tyrin Turner thanks
Pepsi phone review?
What's a "mega pickle"
How does the honor 8 do in comparison with LG G4? Thinking of switching.
Just ordered this phone from my current provider for 250euro on a sale. fucking amazing for that price.
A really nice review! Liking the technical aspects :)
OMG your twitter didn't lie. I love that ending too!
Had a little fun with that. Fingerprint magnet and all...

This guy definitely blows mkbhd out of the water.
High praise indeed :-)
In amount of useful information , MKBHD is really lacking a lot. He is a casual phone reviewer. He just have best presentation and extremely crispy videos. And he is awesome dude.
Well, MKBHD is good in delivering the bottom line without going into too much detail.
Guys like Juan are great if you are interested in the nitty-gritty.
D13H4RD2L1V3 exactly :)
D13H4RD2L1V3
Agreed. MKBHD is the single best overview guy on the web.
Thanks.
Thanks for covering the Bluetooth performance! I use it a lot as well but it's sadly missing from most reviews
It's one of those easy to overlook sections. I tend to only mention things like that when I run into significant issues.
A very useful and informative review. Nicely done.
Good Review, lots of improvement and the review is in depth
Hi, Pocketnow ! What's the name of the stylus your using ? Is it a Bluetooth stylus ? Where can I buy one like this ? Thanks !
It's an absolutely stunning phone tbh. Huawei is really upping their game in every aspect. I had a g510 a couple of years ago, hatted EMUi, but I'm really thinking of giving the company another try with the p9. All in all, they're becoming serious competition to the top companies currently. :)

I got you :-)
@pocketnow- Thanks for the most helpful review. I'm confused between oneplus3 and this phone. You've mentioned that its audio performance is inferior from One plus 3. Could you please tell me if this is the deal braker? and also which has the better camera. Thanks in advance. Cheers
Hope Huawei had great success with the 6p and start considering bringing cleaner android on their phones. They make wonderful hardware at a good price
Well supposedly EMUI 5 will be closer to stock, at least allowing you to bring back an app drawer. We shall see.
JuanBagnell Could you link to any of these leaks/rumours?
I see the sonic screwdriver casually sitting there 😊👏👍
Just chillin with my Sonic.
+JuanBagne
Second!
You were first, not second.
...video of you saying "Megapickles" in 1 week
Playing a dangerous game here.
+JuanBagnell you know how to make a review. 👍 thumbs up to reinforce positive feedback on you. And the spooky thing at the end, bloody clever!
LMMFFFOO MICHAEL FISHER GETTING THIRD WOULD BE DO FUNNY
Within 2 months of getting this phone, I had screen display problems. It glitches and has lots of lines on the screen which sometimes results in me not being able to use the touch-screen, before that I really liked the phone. So frustrating.

Juan Bagnel makes the best tech videos on the planet. Superb job once again man!
:-)
It would be cool to see a camera comparison between the Honor 8, iPhone SE and OnePlus 3
i got that phone yesterday on christmas!!!! TODAY!!!
Great review like always!
On the contrary, I find the super aggressive battery mode very cool - the one that cuts everything android and launch a low level interface - It is very use-full, if you need to take it on long trekking trips ( > 4 days without charger )
is the v8 more worth it , although with different design but better internals and with a price just a bit higher?
Good review. Went with the Axon 7 , which I got for 370!
Solid choice and a great price :-)
Waiting for my Hauwei honor Note with the 6,6 Inch, this Time I will use a case and try to use anti break glass protection, my mate 7 Broke yesterday when it fell down and it broke Heavely and I cant enjoy the phone anymore I try to avoid looking on the screen, sad that I have to stick with it around for more then 1 month untill I have enough money to get a new phone...
Isfak Volpo
Ugh. Hope you can get it sorted soon.
great deal, where did you buy it? i'm interested on getting one myself.
Bought it from swappa. Good thing I did because the other prices were higher than the retail price.
I'd like to see a camera comparison between this and the Nexus 5X.
do you get that stylus with the phone ? or did you buy it separately ?
0:49 " ..... and above the screen, we have a respectable 8 MEGAPICKLE selfie camera " :)))) Thanks for the LOLZ....watching this in the morning and it made my day for some reason. Keep up the good work !
Glad you enjoyed :-)
Those megapickles sure are tasty...
Juan do you prefer the camera on the honor 8 or the zte axon 7?
what is that stylus you are using and how do I get my hands on one?
I wasn't going to pass on this phone all together, but I fiddled with it for a little bit in a Best buy and I think I really like it. Not to mention it's cheaper than some of my other options. I can deal with the UI (I'll probably slap Nova launcher on it anyway) and the camera looks great
I've been impressed with battery life. Huawei does great with battery mgmt, killing apps left and right. I have been getting 4-5 hours SOT so far.
So many good choices in the $400 price class.
Never thought this would be a good problem to have.
LOL! I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO SAY THAT!
Because it's true. This is an EXCELLENT problem to have.
Don't think it was imaginable just a few years ago.
That we would have so many great offerings that don't come in at a top-dollar price tag.
Thank you so much for the bluetooth analysis, which is severely lacking in ALL other tech channels. almost to the point of deal breaker for me with that flaw.
It was absolutely the most frustrating aspect of reviewing this phone.
Is the Axon 7 review coming sometime before the Galaxy Note 36?
What's up with the screen on time with this device? My honor 8 won't get more than 4h I reckon. All reviewers but you talk about stellar 8h+ of screen on! Bug or hardware fault? Any fixes?
Hello Juan, what's the name of the stylus pen that you were using? Can it be use to draw in-app too? or just to navigate? 😂
Does the photo came out monochrome if u block the coloured sensor? Itll be cool if u can answer this question on your next video. Thnx again n ur style of video is great.
Nope. I thought it would, but that's not how these sensors work.
Hahaha ok. Thnx again.
Great review!!!
Great comment :-)

I mean I could have a real conversation about why we position products the way we do, but why when you're slinging "stupid" around.
I don't think the term stupid discredits the very valid point I made, you're just dancing around the question now. At least I didn't ask you if it was worth it!
Colton Mandell
"worth it" ugh...
when you do reviews can you add how the phone manufacturer does on andriod updates. A new phone can get old fast them google release new updates and the new phone you got is left behind
Now I feel like a sucker buying the P9
Aw buddy. P9 is still a fine phone.
This really isn't much better. It's just a couple little things.
I actually don't. I would be very torn if I had to decide between the P9 and the Honor 8 now, but I'm perfectly happy with my P9. I prefer the metal back, because I think it feels better than glass and obviously it attracts *way* less fingerprints
+Matthias Schmitt me too, but I bought it a couple of days before the honor 8 came out.
+Liel Bouskila RIP
Can you take screenshots with the fingerprint scanner?
What's this transparent case? Looking good.
I really like that phone. And I'm looking forward to buying it once it'll be released
There are a lot of people saying the SAR values are way too high, is it really that Bad, especially if you don't call often like me?
just bought one on Newegg
on sale for 239$ with free 100$ headphones and extra USB cable
Fantastic video as usual Juan!! Indeed a great phone, and a top contender on the budget side... Would be great having moer options like this.... Kinda remind me of what Sony used to do with their "compact" models
Right! ZTE, Alcatel, OP, and now Honor. Good times.
JuanBagnell "Good phones are getting cheap and cheap phones are getting good" by MKBHD lol
BT seems weird on almost all Android devices. Nexus 6p was much worse, with audio cutting out every other second. my Honor 8 did disconnect once from my car, but so did my Samsung 7 edge on a daily basis. At least when it's connected, sound is clear and no cut outs.
I already have the Axon 7 for the audio and multimedia... I might pick this up for the camera
I am honored by all these megapickles!
Is this handset glued or does it have screws? I think repairability is an important issue!
Good review. Very informative. I'm looking for a low price android device to use along with my daily driver. Which is the iPhone 6s Plus soon to be the 7 plus.
"8 mega-pickle"
I'm gonna be getting this or the p9 I'm kinda excited I've been using HTC or Nokia for the last few years so I'm thinking of trying something different:) *fingers crossed*
I'm a big audiophile and i enjoy amazing sound quality , will the Honor 8 deliver that ?
What is the name of the games that you play in the review? Thank you.
Thanks for the warning. Was thinking about grabbing this phone for some bluetooth jobs. Wrong tool for the job.
This would be my pick for the sub $400 range, so pretty and that camera! I wonder if it will come to Australia...
Since Australia doesn't use weird bands :)

Nice video!
Which is best -
Huawei honor 8
Vs
Huawei p10 lite
im getting a new phone (i have an alcatel one touch Go play, so anything is an up grade, really )
And the price isnt badly different
But idk which one to buy? Someone help 😂😂
Jessica Aksskjold I will tell you, after 2, 3 days. Now I have p 10 lite, and I bought Honor 9. Tomorrow arrive !
good job Juan👍
does IR Blaster work on HDTV or does it need to be a smart TV and will it control Blu Ray Player?
Well I subbed! This is a damn good review!
Can't wait to see dev support on XDA
Great overall review.
What stylo pen do you guys use? Thx :)
do you recommend this today for 360$ ??
Juan whenever I see your name I automatically think Juan Baguette....
What stylus are you using in this video?
0:50 I wish my phone had an 8 mega-pickle camera!
So which is the better overall phone the honor8 or oneplus3 or the axon7?
Cool review . 📹
What is the stylus which you use in this video?
Is huwei good with updates for this phone?
So how about a comparison with this and the OnePlus 3?
what was that pen you were using at around 2:10???
Gotta love that 8 mega pickle front facing camera.
Honor 8 have a much better camera and screen compared to Oneplus 3. The design is nice and compact in the hand!
I like 1080p better on a slightly smaller screen.
I always thought that the p9 was over priced and Huawei kinda just proved my point lol. They should've packed better specs in the p9
this and the Axon 7 are both great values, and other than the camera, the Axon 7 seems to be an even better deal. The Chinese are starting to build amazing world class phones.
It is perfect. Just improve everything by a considerable margin and I will buy that one.
what is that pen you use to scroll on the Honor 8?
whats the pen u are using in the video ?
