Thanks for the mention on the video guys! - - Electric Light Orchestra are (in 1975-79, the 'classic' line up): Jeff Lynne - lead guitar, lead vocal, writer and producer Bev Bevan - drums, co-founder with Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood from The Move in 1970 'Kelly' (Michael) Groucutt - bass Richard Tandy - keyboards Mik Kaminski - violin (so Father is correct!) Melvyn Gale - cello Hugh McDowell - cello - - Genesis of the band was 60s beat group The Move, intended to be a Birmingham supergroup to rival the Beatles. They had a string of hit singles in the UK but couldn't sell albums, because everyone got all the tracks on the single A and B sides! Roy Wood's replacement in his old band The Nightriders was Jeff Lynne, and Roy asked Jeff to join The Move several times but he refused until 1969, on condition they experiment with strings attached to pick up where the Beatles left off with I Am The Walrus and Strawberry Fields. They made one more album as The Move, which didn't sell, so they started a seperate album project called The Electric Light Orchestra. Released in 1971, it also didn't sell, so in desperation they released a single, 10538 Overture, and it was a hit in the UK. That spelled the end of The Move, Roy Wood left to form another band called Wizzard, so Jeff and Bev continued to develop ELO. - - This song was used for the end credits of the film Boogie Nights (1997), a dark comedy drama about the 1970s porn industry, so I doubt Ethan has seen this! It is also I believe used as the intro to a game based on Guardians Of The Galaxy, when the game loads up, which may be just the short clip that Ethan has heard possibly? I don't know of any other films it was used in, maybe someone else does? - - Like many ELO songs the music is very "happy" but if you check out the lyrics they are very sad. They even contain the word "terrible" which is a terrible word to have in a song lyric, but part of Jeff's skill is to make it fit the music by elongating it - "it's a livin' thing, what a terrrrrrible thing to lose, it's a givin' thing, it's a terrrrrrrible thing to lose..." Many people try to decypher ELO lyrics but the intent was for the vocals to be just instruments in the orchestra and Jeff is notorious for recycling the same lyrics in different songs and for making them up at the last minute in the studio. - - The Beatles references are pretty obvious, the original intent was to follow them after the Beatles split in 1970, the year ELO started. John Lennon said that if the Beatles had stayed together in the 70s they would sound like ELO. He actually called them "Son of Beatles". - - My suggested next single ELO song reaction would be Turn To Stone. A lot of tracks on the albums are linked by special instrumental or other effects, part of the original vision, and some are contained in the song itself, like Turn To Stone. A really brave reaction would be to hear Concerto For A Rainy Day - 19 minutes of 3 interlinked songs about rain and storms, until the 4th track Mr Blue Sky, sees the sun finally come out. Both of these suggestions come from their best album, 1977's Out Of The Blue, the follow-up to A New World Record in 1976. One of my favourite sayings is "context is important" and Mr Blue Sky is often heard out of context (it was a single release after all), but I would love to see young people from Ethan's generation listen to albums. - - I've been watching some of your Nightwish videos and maybe 'symphonic metal' is the next big thing, I don't know. I've also been steered by one of your subscribers (thanks Celina Alicia) to another Finnish band Apocalyptica, which sounds like something between ELO and Nightwish, so maybe that one would be worth a look? - - Thanks again guys. That's another reaction channel with a very positive reaction to ELO.
@@HalStargazer - Confusion was written during a game of pool. One of Jeff's best friends is 1970s Birmingham City soccer star Trevor Francis. While playing pool in the games room at Jeff's house in England, Jeff suddenly excused himself and Trevor could hear a piano being played with a little tune in another room. A few months later he heard the Discovery album for the first time and recognised Confusion as the tune he heard on the piano. Jeff always says he writes on the piano because he can never find any paper! He actually uses a tape recorder because he can't read or write music, despite trying to learn.
Lost my wife some years ago (breast cancer) and can feel the happiness of dad and son enjoying music together, what a wonderful video...I will show it my only 15 year son, and hope he also likes ELO, so his mom up in heaven too,... I love it...thank you guys!
Funny thing, I wasn't an ELO fan when I was young, but as I grew older I began to appreciate Jeff Lynne's music more and more. I really began to see what music genius he was when he was with The Traveling Wilburys. Guys, as always, great reactions. You're the best!
Watching this has just made me realise I must have heard many ELO songs in my life without knowing what band was playing the songs. I like this one and also Jeff Lynne's 'Mr. Blue Sky'. But yes, a truly great band and this song has an uplifting and feel good factor. Which is also what we all need right now. Keep up the great work. james:)
In re: your question about it being in a movie or TV show - the only one I can think of is that it was in the second episode of My Name is Earl in 2005
Jeff Lynne is a good song writer. I remember this song from my early years! "Telephone Line" and "Roll Over Beethoven" are another songs I remember from ELO. Love your talking after the song. :)
Love ELO! “All Over the World” is my favorite. There are a couple great videos of people all over the world dancing to it. If you ever react to videos....it’s a great one. 👍🏼
Yes guys, so many of their songs are absolute essentials, so it's hard to even make suggestions! Sweet talkin' woman, Telephone line, Fire on high, Can't get it out of my head, Showdown......
It''s great that you've got around to reacting to ELO. You've made my day😁 They are one of my favourite bands ever but years ago it was very unhip to like them but they have proved over the years that they have the skills and talents to outlast many other bands.Their whole career is based on the Beatles basically as Jeff Lynne, who wrote all the songs, was a great fan of them. Jeff Lynne started by joining The Move in the 1960s alongside Roy Wood (who founded the band and went on to form Wizzard after Jeff Lynne left). They were both from Birmingham in the Midlands as were many other bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest and The Moody Blues and at the extreme end of the spectrum Napalm Death!😈 The Move had hits with Flowers In The Rain,Fire Brigade,Hello Suzie, Blackberry Way,Brontosaurus,Do Ya and California Man which are all worth checking out in their own right.. ELO had many great songs from many great albums. One well worth checking out are: Showdown Telephone Line Evil Woman Strange Magic Do Ya - remake of The Move song but equally as good if not better! Sweet Talking Woman Roll Over Beethoven Can't Get it Out Of My Head Telephone Line Ma Ma Belle Rockaria! Diary Of Horace Wimp - his version of the Beatles 'A Day In The Life' basically Discovery Last Train To London 10538 Overture Happy exploring!
They've made my day too. ELO are the musical equivalent of the Star Wars franchise, and this channel has "just taken a first step into a wider world". Kind of like their first Nightwish experience, but 'symphonic rock' from the 70s.
Got to love ELO, someone once said this is how the Beatles would have eventually sounded like if they had not split. Strange Magic, Sweet Talking Woman, The Diary of Horace Wimp, Jungle, Last Train to London, all classics.
@@fatherandsonreactions Hi, I think your channel is really cool! The interaction between father and son and the way the father teaches the young man to like good music is very fun! My children learned to like the same songs that I did from a very young age, good music! Now they have an enviable musical taste! All the best to you! Sergio, in Brazil.
Leader of ELO Jeff Lynne was influenced heavily by The Beatles , especially George Harrison. Yes that was a violin ,ELO means Electric Light ORCHESTRA. They used violins and cellos
Wow. Ethan, I have heard this song many times but never knew the title. I knew it was ELO. It is a violin dad. Great band. Ethan you got it, it just makes you feel good. 👍👍
Greetings from Denmark! Being an ELO fan since 1981, it is always a pleasure to see a new person being introduced to the wonderful music of Jeff Lynne and ELO. In my opinion, it is better to hear entire albums, especially the albums that form a continuous "story", like Eldorado, Out Of The Blue, and Time. (But also, to some extent, all the others.) Some songs, in fact also _Mr Blue Sky_ (which stands very well on its own) gain a _lot_ when heard within the full context. _Mr Blue Sky_ is the last song of the side 3 suite of OOTB, "Concerto for a Rainy Day", and also ties straight into the following song (first song of side 4, _Sweet Is The Night_), which is clearly hinted at by the ending vocoder vocal saying "please turn me over". Time, of course is a complete sci-fi novel rendered as dreamy, synthy music, and again, although each song is great alone, the progression, even if it is not a coherent story, enhances and contrasts everything. It's like hearing the entire 9. symphony by Beethoven versus just hearing the final chorus part. I guess when Jeff resumes touring after all this Corona-madness, father and son will enjoy going to a JL ELO concert together. I did so two years ago with my son and daughter.
My favorite band of the 70s and into the 80s. Whole albums were tunely. I recently compiled my Beatles top 30, but couldn't do less than 35 ELO songs. So many to choose from, but two songs that really showcase Jeff Lynne's musical talents are Strange Magic and Turn To Stone. Another favorite for many is Can't Get It Out Of My Head.
Jeff Lynne once remarked (I think it was during a tour of the US in 1976) that ELO were bigger than the Beatles. It was one of Jeff's jokes of course, because his hero is John Lennon, who had got into terrible trouble with the American Bible Belt 10 years earlier after remarking (in the UK to a UK journalist) that kids were more interested in the Beatles than Jesus.
Just got out of bed🤣🤣🤣Saturday night and all that🤪🤪🤪Great that you are checking out ELO. Hold On Tight or Telephone Line are also great. About what you guys are talking about, at some stage have a listen to Gary Moore's Parisienne Walkways from the Montruex Jazz festival. At the end, if you're not looking, you would swear it is the bagpipes playing. Just Gary on the guitar. Amazing
In 2017, "Livin' Thing" was featured in Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy game. The 2017 Guardians sequel of the 2014 original film also contains music from ELO.
Also, although I can't say precisely, the chorus may have been used as a TV or radio commercial jingle at some point.....another place it could have been heard.
@@davemac1197 Just thought I'd narrow it down a bit...everyone seemed to be focusing on movies or video games. When I hear it, I almost see it in a commercial----I just can't even begin to remember which (if at all)!
So cool, guys! You are correct, there was a Beatle vibe to it. Jeff Lynne, the singer songwriter and guitarist played in the studio on some of the Beatles recordings. He was considered " the 5th Beatle", so right on! ELO have alot of great songs to discover. Check out "Telephone Line", or "Don't Bring Me Down". Theres so many more....great job! Have a nice weekend!❤(liked the Who video you posted today)
Thanks Lisa! Wow that’s pretty interesting! Never knew he was considered that but it makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the recommendations! Glad you enjoyed the song. 💛 Have a great weekend! -S
Jeff Lynne produced George Harrison's 1997 album Cloud Nine and was asked to restore a couple of John Lennon's demo tapes (correcting the timing and cleaning up the sound quality) to integrate them with recording by the surviving Beatles in 1995. Free As A Bird and Real Love were released as 'Beatles' singles, 25 years after they broke up, along with the Beatles Anthology box set. I never liked the tag "5th Beatle" attached to Jeff, and he's so modest and shy he would never regard himself in that way. To me the 5th Beatle is either producer George Martin or original Beatles drummer Pete Best.
Hey guys great review I love ELO but I also love The Alan Parsons Project you should check some of there songs Games People Play, I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You or the most known song Sirius/Eye in the Sky🤗
Telephone Line, Mr. Blue Sky, Turn To Stone, Strange Magic....those are a good place to start. There are some less radio friendly songs like Eldorado and Eldorado Finale....that are the deeper cut. Yes, it is a violin and cello....they also pluck it to make some of the sounds that are shorter. Great reaction.
Good song. I never heard a full album from them, but they have a lot of good songs. They did a great cover of "Roll over Beethoven". A personal favourite which is requested very often is "Here is the News".
It was apparently used in Volkswagen's "The New King" commercial in 2017, which led to the song breaking back into the Billboard charts for the first time in 40 years. That might have been where you heard it.
Haha! I love it (You Tube). It plays a verse and the chorus, not just the snippet Ethan recognised. I would expect him to remember a floating gorilla - I mean, how would anyone forget that. A lot of car commercials are like that, you remember the commercial but forget what car it was supposed to be advertising.
As well as being the main man in the ELO Jeff Lynne was important part of the Travelling Willbury's with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dillan and Tom Petty. Jeff along with George Harrison produce Willbury albums. My favourite track of theirs was "The End Of The Line". There is a great video of the track out there. Roy Orbison had sadly died before they made the video, so they had a rocking chair on the video to represent Roy.
hi, i know we´re doing 70ies here and it´s my era, i was 12 in 1975 and i love your reactions and love to hear the stuff i grew up with ... that decade arguably brought the greatest stuff in rock, alongside with the late 60ies. that being said: if you want to see one of the most impressive nowadays live performances (whether you like their music or not), watch RAMMSTEIN : DU HAST Live in Paris (Official Video). must be the official video take. just a suggestion 😁
Hey Guys, ELO was unique in music, a sound all their own. Jeff Lynne was one of the Traveling Wilburys, which also had George Harrison, from that little band the Beatles, kidding, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. Check out Handle with Care and End of the Line, you will like them. I've heard that Electric Light Orchestra became ELO because of legal issues. Research on songfacts.com or Wikipedia. Watching as am able, long day's lately. All the best, C.
Hi Cass, I posted a little bit of info on a couple of comments under the pinned comment from F&S at the top. On the legal issues surrounding the name, Electric Light Orchestra (aka ELO) was owned by the three members of The Move that recorded the experimental debut album 'the Electric Light Orchestra' - Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan. Due to a mixup with time zones and a misunderstood telephone message, this album was marketed in the USA by United Artists with the title 'NO ANSWER'. The fourth member of The Move, bassist Rick Price, was not involved. Roy left in 1972, I think leaving all legal rights to Jeff and Bev. When ELO stopped recording and touring in 1986, Jeff went on to producing for other people, starting with George Harrison, and the Traveling Wilburys were formed at this time. Bev Bevan and other members of ELO wanted to continue touring, so the arrangement was that this band were called 'ELO Part 2', and recorded a couple of albums of new material without Jeff Lynne. Jeff has recently re-recorded many of the old ELO songs on his own at his home studio in LA, and a couple of new albums and tours as 'Jeff Lynne's ELO' to distinguish it from 'ELO Part 2'.
You should check out "Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra Live at Hyde Park". It's a great concert (done only a couple of years ago), and you see the instruments being played (particularly the violin!). All the old favourites are played. Highly recommend.
A number of years ago I went in to a record shop called "Heavyheads" to buy an ELP album - vinyl then - the assistant asked me what I thought of Carl Palmer as a drummer, so I duly answered him. I noticed loads of pictures on a wall of The Move and ELO and I told him their drummer had long disappointed me. He asked why, so I answered that it looked as though he was playing a child's drum kit and that all he was was a drummer and not a percussionist. His reply shook me; "Thanks mate. I'll remember that!" Then I realised it was none other than Bev Bevan, who owned the shop. I dont think i could get out the shop quick enough. A few weeks later ELO were on top of the pops with Bev Bevan hiding behind a huge drum kit. I wonder if he will read this and even if he remembers. I should thank him for not setting the two great danes that he had in the shop on two me.
Wow! That's a great story. I live in the Birmingham area (Solihull District) now but was in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area most of my life and missed out on a lot of local knowledge. Bev wrote an autobiography on his career (where I get most of my ELO info) from Denny Laine And The Diplomats through The Move and ELO up to 1980, which is when I went to Birmingham University. So the period 1983-2016 I have not been local to this area, so your story and Bev's shop probably falls into that period somewhere. He had a reputation in the ELO days for being one of the heaviest drummers in the business, partly because to help get a bigger sound they overdubbed his drum track, which required him to play exactly the same way and timing as the first track or it would sound like there were two drummers. Apart from seeing him on stage a few times I only saw Bev once in person on the Ferrari stand at the 1982 Motor Show at the Bitmingham NEC. He was with his best friend from school days, comedian Jasper Carrott (real name Bobby Davis, and in class they were seated alphabetically, so B was next to D). Unfortunately, the Ferrari stand was roped off to keep the great unwashed public from getting their sticky fingers on the nice red cars so we couldn't mob them for autographs. Thanks Steve!
I also remember one of the dogs from a picture in his book - a big black monster of a Dane called Pongo, if I remember, and it was as long as he is tall, and Bev is 6 foot at least.
@@fatherandsonreactions On an earlier occasion the school was summoned to the hall. I went home for dinners so I missed what had taken place. The Move had been escorted off the premises and everyone was told to hand in the pictures they had distributed. There were to be no satanic influences. If anyone did hand the pics in I dont know. I wouldn't have done.
@@davemac1197 that might have been one of the dogs. As you say they were huge. I think Bev was a fair bit more than 6 foot which was why he made drum kits look small.
ELO is a very creative group. Sort of a mix of rock and classical. Yes, the Beatles influence is obvious. Mellow out with Strange Magic or rock out with Don't Bring Me Down. Too many good tunes to mention.
Sweet talking woman Turn to stone Night in the city Etc The combination of classical instruments and electric makes their music unique. Ayreon does in fact the same. Often classical piano, violin and cello combined with electric guitars, Hammond organ and percussion.
1) ELO next song: TURN TO STONE or MR. BLUE SKY ... they have dozens of great songs, many of them you will know anyway 😁 2) by the way: this stuff is great live, too. they´re still touring and their performance is up there with the studio recordings. 3) jeff lynne is considered the legitimate follow-up composer after the beatles. he even was the producer of the beatles´ last compilation album in the 90ies (with two new songs). also, he had a band with george harrison, called the traveling wilburys 4) the song above was in a videogame of marvels guardians of the galaxy
Based on your two comments we have a similar history and only a year apart in age. Ethan already knows Mr Blue Sky from somewhere, but I would suggest doing the whole of Concerto For A Rainy Day to hear it in the proper context. That would be a real trip for these boys and a marathon reaction video (the music would be 19 minutes long), but Turn To Stone is my tip for dipping another toe in the water first. Greetings from Birmingham, UK.
'Rock 'n' Roll Is King', 'Hold On Tight', 'Shine A Little Love', 'Wild West Hero', are all ELO songs I've yet to see anyone react to. Maybe you can be the first?
That's interesting. I've been an ELO fan since 1976/77 and just started exploring Nightwish, thanks to Father and Son. Another Finnish band I have been steered towards by a Finnish subscriber on the channel (Celina Alicia) is a band called Apocalyptica. Their most viewed video is Not Strong Enough, and based on that they seem to have a sound somewhere between ELO and Nightwish. Definitely a band I will be exploring some more.
My understanding is that this song is used in the GOTG game as it loads up. Mr Blue Sky was used in the opening title sequence of the GOTG 2 movie - I've seen a clip, it's hilarious. The reactions from Pat on PATROL GAMING REACTIONS channel are absolutely priceless because the two songs used in GOTG are his "favourite songs" but he had no clue who recorded them until he did the ELO reactions on his channel.
Hello young fellas! Been a while. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Are you ready for some great suggestions from this dinosaur? 😆. I'll leave you with this ELO instrumental. FIRE ON HIGH
Mr Blue Sky was used in the trailer for the movie Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind in 2004. The movie was great but I was disappointed to find that the song was not used on the soundtrack, just the trailer. Since the movie was all about having bad memories removed, it made absolute sense.
Man, Larry's gotten good at saying "Insta." Feeling more natural now as he says it, which also means... he's slowly transforming into a youth! Be careful Ethan, soon Larry might be seen with a backwards baseball cap and a skateboard over his shoulder, while wearing brightly-colored clothing and adopting more youthful slang! The horror! XD ........ my personal song reaction...... I mean, right off the bat introducing those violins? This ong might just already be a 10/10 for me. Again, love when music blends in classical instruments. Haha. After that, maybe the acoustic melody feels a little, but with the way the voice is honey-smooth, with the occasional swoons and sways as he flows between pitch and tone, is awesome. Even the background vocals as well. And despite the acoustic part, I also like how "uppity" the song kind of feels. So, I think I'm maybe down for the acoustic. In terms of ELO in movies, maybe one of these five you might have recognized their songs in? www.tvovermind.com/best-uses-elo-songs-movies/ You can also look at the "movies" tab in this link, to see if maybe this song was used in one of these movies: www.insoundtrack.com/musician/electric-light-orchestra#:~:text=Electric%20Light%20Orchestra%20played%20in%2033%20movies.%20Electric,movies%3A%20Billy%20Madison%2C%20Megamind%2C%20Ricki%20and%20the%20Flash Yeah, this violin is a MAJOR highlight in the song for me. So awesome, I love the violin. Haha (Also, if you ever want to take a large step into the metal scene, the violin is featured in Ne Oblivicaris' song "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" as well as other tracks. It's also a song featured in a college course at Sydney Conservatory of Music, for it's use in composition, being compared to Beethoven. Thing is, the song also features harsh vocals. I'd reccomend a live version of the song, though). I believe it's a violin. Some people would say fiddle, but I believe a fiddle is a violin, but it becomes a fiddle by the way you play it. That Ne Obliviscaris song I mentioned above, is played like a fiddle in some areas. I guess the only nitpick I have with this song, is the fade-out. The way they continue the music, but just add a fade out at the end, feels a bit lazy to me. I'd rather it fade out with just one note that caps off the song, if anything. But I think you know that as a pet-peeve of mine by now, though. lol It's fine if it works for you, or anyone else, though. This is just a personal preference. :) Overall I give the song an 8/10! Very good! Now, I see you posted up Alice in Chains Man in the Box... oh snapples. ........... Post-song discussion...... I can hear The Beatles tone with it as well. I can hear it in the voice in some parts, as well as maybe the acoustic nature of it. I think maybe take out the violin, and the comparison could be even more noticeable. I think with Larry saying how the song sounded so crisp, can be pointed with the great production of the song. Great production varies with different songs, depending on what kind of feel or tone or atmosphere you want (sometimes it's intentional to have an instrument tones down in a song). With this, being able to point out each individual instrument fairly easily, could point to the great production of the song as it seems like that was it's intention. And while it also blends in with the other instruments, you can maybe chalk it up to great composition. I think I'm with you guys basically 100% with this one! Pretty great stuff! And now, I see you reacted to Man in the Box.... oh snapples... Time to move on to that. :P
Also, hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving! I know it feels different this time of year, but when you got a copious supply of awesome food, mashed potatoes, turkey/ham, stuffing.... Hard to beat that. Haha I ate with my Dad, and talked with my Mom over Zoom for a while. Pretty nice, all things considered.
Yes he’s definitely getting better at it haha!! Glad you enjoyed the song so much! Yeah that violin is killer. Insanely tasty. Hope you had a great thanksgiving! I know I had a lot of Turkey and stuffing! -S
In May it was voted happiest song ever in a poll conducted by Greatest Hits Radio in the UK, beating Abba's Dancing Queen, Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer, and Katrina And The Waves' Walking On Sunshine. But Ethan said he already knows it, which explains why he is so happy and not a deranged serial killer fed on a constant diet of Slipknot.

Having just watched your reaction again (25th century archaeologists digging up your archive may wonder who this "Dave Mack" was?) you made a very good point about the band not being as well known as their songs. Jeff Lynne is a very shy guy, a studio man, and the band never really had a public image. The current version of the band is called 'Jeff Lynne's ELO' for contractual reasons as drummer Bev Bevan as co-founder of 'ELO' own's 50% of the name and is not involved anymore, but keyboardist Richard Tandy, the bassist in 1972, is still working with Jeff. ELO has some pretty decent songs, but I haven't heard many from them (just the classic rock radio hits). I don't know why, but they have never really interested me enough to investigate their discography. I love Jeff Lynne's voice...his work with the supergroup The Traveling Wilbury's is good too (I hope you guys have heard them before). ELO has some pretty sweet harmonies and melodies in this song, that's for sure. Very upbeat and catchy...your Beatles reference makes sense to me. You guys have reacted to Megadeth before, but it seems that you have concentrated on their heavier stuff so far (Rust in Peace is an awesome thrash record!). Here is Symphony Of Destruction (ua-cam.com/video/h2LG7JXK5mQ/v-deo.html). Cheers!

Electric Light Orchestra are (in 1975-79, the 'classic' line up):

Bev Bevan - drums, co-founder with Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood from The Move in 1970
'Kelly' (Michael) Groucutt - bass
Richard Tandy - keyboards

Melvyn Gale - cello
Hugh McDowell - cello

Like many ELO songs the music is very "happy" but if you check out the lyrics they are very sad. They even contain the word "terrible" which is a terrible word to have in a song lyric, but part of Jeff's skill is to make it fit the music by elongating it - "it's a livin' thing, what a terrrrrrible thing to lose, it's a givin' thing, it's a terrrrrrrible thing to lose..."
Many people try to decypher ELO lyrics but the intent was for the vocals to be just instruments in the orchestra and Jeff is notorious for recycling the same lyrics in different songs and for making them up at the last minute in the studio.

The Beatles references are pretty obvious, the original intent was to follow them after the Beatles split in 1970, the year ELO started. John Lennon said that if the Beatles had stayed together in the 70s they would sound like ELO. He actually called them "Son of Beatles".
- -
My suggested next single ELO song reaction would be Turn To Stone.

I've been watching some of your Nightwish videos and maybe 'symphonic metal' is the next big thing, I don't know. I've also been steered by one of your subscribers (thanks Celina Alicia) to another Finnish band Apocalyptica, which sounds like something between ELO and Nightwish, so maybe that one would be worth a look?

confusion is another great song
@@HalStargazer - Confusion was written during a game of pool. One of Jeff's best friends is 1970s Birmingham City soccer star Trevor Francis. While playing pool in the games room at Jeff's house in England, Jeff suddenly excused himself and Trevor could hear a piano being played with a little tune in another room. A few months later he heard the Discovery album for the first time and recognised Confusion as the tune he heard on the piano. Jeff always says he writes on the piano because he can never find any paper! He actually uses a tape recorder because he can't read or write music, despite trying to learn.

Funny thing, I wasn't an ELO fan when I was young, but as I grew older I began to appreciate Jeff Lynne's music more and more. I really began to see what music genius he was when he was with The Traveling Wilburys. Guys, as always, great reactions. You're the best!
Wow interesting thanks Mark! You’re the best! Hope your doing well and having a wonderful weekend! 👍💛🤘 -S
So refreshing to see a father and child reaction video where the child isn't acting like he's too cool to do a video with his dad. Nice work guys. 👍🏻

This was my ultimate favorite song at 10!!!
Keep up the great work. james:)
All over the world is another great ELO song
Guardians of the Galaxy..... ELO had this and the opening song in the second movie
Great song and reaction. Another great ELO song is Turn To Stone. And yes, they were heavily influenced by the Beatles. Peace and love from Toronto!
Thanks JV Monte! -S
Thank you 😃 Can’t wait to hear more! -S
Love ELO! “All Over the World” is my favorite. There are a couple great videos of people all over the world dancing to it. If you ever react to videos....it’s a great one. 👍🏼
Sorry, if you do All Over the World, you have to react to the song being in Xanadu. Son needs to experience Gene Kelly, the greatest dancer ever.
Yes guys, so many of their songs are absolute essentials, so it's hard to even make suggestions! Sweet talkin' woman, Telephone line, Fire on high, Can't get it out of my head, Showdown......
Telephone line is another great ELO song.
It''s great that you've got around to reacting to ELO. You've made my day😁
They are one of my favourite bands ever but years ago it was very unhip to like them but they have proved over the years that they have the skills and talents to outlast many other bands.Their whole career is based on the Beatles basically as Jeff Lynne, who wrote all the songs, was a great fan of them.
Jeff Lynne started by joining The Move in the 1960s alongside Roy Wood (who founded the band and went on to form Wizzard after Jeff Lynne left). They were both from Birmingham in the Midlands as were many other bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest and The Moody Blues and at the extreme end of the spectrum Napalm Death!😈
The Move had hits with Flowers In The Rain,Fire Brigade,Hello Suzie, Blackberry Way,Brontosaurus,Do Ya and California Man which are all worth checking out in their own right..
ELO had many great songs from many great albums. One well worth checking out are:
Showdown
Telephone Line
Evil Woman
Strange Magic
Do Ya - remake of The Move song but equally as good if not better!
Sweet Talking Woman
Roll Over Beethoven
Can't Get it Out Of My Head
Telephone Line
Ma Ma Belle
Rockaria!
Diary Of Horace Wimp - his version of the Beatles 'A Day In The Life' basically
Discovery
Last Train To London
10538 Overture
Happy exploring!
They've made my day too. ELO are the musical equivalent of the Star Wars franchise, and this channel has "just taken a first step into a wider world". Kind of like their first Nightwish experience, but 'symphonic rock' from the 70s.
Aww we are so happy to hear that we made your day 😃😁 Thank you so much for all of this information and recommendations! -S
There was two violin and cello players in ELO. It was their trademark!
Next try Telephone Line, a really unique song. ALL Deliciously Beatles-y ELO.
Great review guys lovely to see 2 generations react to the genius jeff lynne i suggest do ya as your next one thanks ❤

Love the place ELO takes me!
Thanks for the reaction, guys!
Haha Yup! That catch phrase will NEVER be forgotten 😂!!!
Glad you enjoyed the reaction! Hope you’re doing well Rob! -S
Got to love ELO, someone once said this is how the Beatles would have eventually sounded like if they had not split. Strange Magic, Sweet Talking Woman, The Diary of Horace Wimp, Jungle, Last Train to London, all classics.
John Lennon, and I believe Paul McCartney also said the same.
Great choice Father & Son! Greetings from Brazil!

Leader of ELO Jeff Lynne was influenced heavily by The Beatles , especially George Harrison. Yes that was a violin ,ELO means Electric Light ORCHESTRA. They used violins and cellos

Well, Mr Blue Sky is probably the happiest song ever written, so maybe that.
Thank you so much for doing this. Welcome to ELO. My reaction to your reaction after I've watched the video.
Your very welcome ! -S
Yeah, ELO writes happy music
If you really wanna boggie play the song "Last train to London", such a classic song. You two are freaking awesome!!!!!🙏
Thank you !! -S

@@fatherandsonreactions to be fair there are a few people who have been called the Fifth Beatle over time!
@@RoyalSkullOh yes, like Eric Clapton.
@@lisamorrison2149 I was thinking George Martin! And Billy Preston.
I haven't listen to ELO before. I've heard of them a lot and meant to listen to them but never got to it. This song was pretty cool.

Ah maybe ! Thanks David! -S
Hello F&S, The members of the Traveling Wilburys each had a name that was different from their real one. Best, C.
Wow that’s an awesome story!! Thank you for sharing! -S

The combination of classical instruments and electric makes their music unique.

Be careful Ethan, soon Larry might be seen with a backwards baseball cap and a skateboard over his shoulder, while wearing brightly-colored clothing and adopting more youthful slang! The horror! XD
........ my personal song reaction......
In terms of ELO in movies, maybe one of these five you might have recognized their songs in? www.tvovermind.com/best-uses-elo-songs-movies/
You can also look at the "movies" tab in this link, to see if maybe this song was used in one of these movies: www.insoundtrack.com/musician/electric-light-orchestra#:~:text=Electric%20Light%20Orchestra%20played%20in%2033%20movies.%20Electric,movies%3A%20Billy%20Madison%2C%20Megamind%2C%20Ricki%20and%20the%20Flash
Yeah, this violin is a MAJOR highlight in the song for me. So awesome, I love the violin. Haha
(Also, if you ever want to take a large step into the metal scene, the violin is featured in Ne Oblivicaris' song "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" as well as other tracks.
Overall I give the song an 8/10!

@@davemac1197 Oops. Of course.
Thanks J Muller! -S

Achillies last stand will make you love Led Zeppelin
When Metallica released their huge-selling Black album, Megadeth also released their top selling album, Countdown to Extinction, which has some great catchy songs on it. Here is Symphony Of Destruction (ua-cam.com/video/h2LG7JXK5mQ/v-deo.html). Cheers!
Hey Mike! I have suggested Megadeth several times and I'm glad you noticed that too. My suggestion would be Wake Up Dead, however SOD is a classic too.
Hope they will do them in the future.
Wow interesting! Cheers Mike and thanks for the request! It’s been to long since we’ve done Megadeth!! -S
@@jamesmaster1450 I love that song (and the Peace Sells... album), but I was surprised to see that very few reaction channels do anything from "Countdown...". I find this strange as it is their best selling album and has their huge hit, Symphony... on it. Cheers!
@@Mike_Judas_Priest_Kalsek Agree und understand. Cheers!
