Hahaha! Jeff Lynne was asked that very same question once when this song came out. His answer was very simple: "It's about love, actually." Love is a living thing, something that needs to be nurtured, and fed, and constantly paid attention to, otherwise it would die. And that would be a "terrible thing."
Oh there’s so many ELO songs to listen to........Mr Blue Sky, Telephone Line, The Diary of Horace Wimp, Sweet Talking Woman. To name but a few, have fun

I think the living thing is love, passion, desire. He's remembering the past and doesn't want to lose it but it sounds like she's leaving. Gypsy violin, very evocative of star crossed lovers, grand passion and then the change to rock brings you back to reality. Great song.
@@rayray-xs6xu ... Thanks for the clarification. I guess my comment sounded a little too short. I wasn't trying to be bitchy. It's all good, we see eyes to eye. Jeff's music should always bring people together ❤
I was a kid when this song came out and I instantly fell in love with ELO! They are amazing :) Another favorite of theirs is Shangri-La which is amazing and haunting :)
Do you know what I love about your channel, K.S.O.? It's like sitting and listening to music with a friend. It feels like a truly shared experience, and with so many of us spending so much of our time in quarantine and isolation, I want you to know how much I appreciate you and what you do. It means a lot to me, and I bet countless others feel the same. Thank you. Thank you so much!
K.S.O. this group is one of my favorite groups of the 70's and they had quite a few hits in the decade and deserving. Their music just puts me in a good mood and sometimes lifts me. A few other great songs to look into are, Evil Woman, Mr. Blue Sky, Strange Magic and Sweet Talkin' Woman. Jeff Lynne has been the lead singer of the group since 1970 and Roy Wood from 1970 to 1972.
Been a fan of ELO since 1972, and have their music. Saw them the last 2 times they played Toronto, 2018, 19. Jeff Lynn is a master and has produced so much music from the days of Wizard. He scored a lot of music with George Harrison, actually lived in his house while making g music together.
ELO is a fun band to listen to. Several hits, all with a tinge of classical instruments along with rock guitar and drums. Smooth, thoughtful, melodic. 👍🎸💜
This song always reminded me of an old movie scene with the violin player playing for the couple with them talking. I think the living thing is Love and it's a terrible thing to lose.
A New World Record, a great album. It must be listened to start to finish. One song leads to another. All the songs stand in their own but you understand the the flow and meaning if listening beginning to end. You won’t regret it. Ohh!!! What I feel is their absolute best album and my favorite of all time...Out of the Blue. Classic ELO.
Can't go wrong with Jeff Lynne and ELO, just a perfect blend in all of their songs, this takes me back to first hearing ELO in my youth and always looking out for new songs and albums from them. Sitting on the beach in Far North Queensland Australia sun beating down on my skin and with friends dancing on the beach till the sun went down, Great Great days Keep Safe Keep Strong
A young girl from my neighborhood passed away in a car accident right around the time this song came out and the chorus of the song has had a haunting effect on me ever since. Whenever I hear it I am immediately transported to that time in my head. I'm not even sure what the song is actually about.
I am also transported back to my time as a kid/teenager in the late '70s whenever I hear songs released back then - Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights is another one...
Analyzing and not just idolizing may not be the intent on a great pop song. Jeff was great at putting words and music together. Doesn’t mean that it needed to make total sense. His concept album TIME, he left for us to decide if it was real or a dream or somewhere in between. Your choice as to what this song means TO YOU. ❤️ your show, you 🤘😎🤘
I believe he is talking about love. Love IS a living thing - it must be nurtured daily, paid attention to or it dies or at least goes into what I call a "flat mode". A flat mode is when you are just going through the motions, just getting through each day. It is often caused by life circumstances - family tragedy or death, children going through a trying time, job loss, etc. When this happens both people have to be willing to work at it to bring it back "to life". My husband and I have been together 44 years and unfortunately have been through a few "flat modes" ... but we have always brought it back to life! Anyway, that is how I hear this song. Thank you for reacting to ELO - I love them and You!
I knew that you'd love this song. It's right up your alley. It's sweet, it's uplifting, it's happy, and it's beautiful. That's a K.S.O. song, for sure. And you looked like you were lovin' it right from the violin intro!
Thank you for playing this request! The song is so good with the orchestration and the lyrics about so let her go don't start spoiling the show it's a bad dream.
One of their best albums, if not THE best. From it I would suggest Mission and Above The Clouds, not to forget Do Ya and Shangri la. Oh.... and Rockaria! Love your reactions K.S.O.! And your looks always do remind me of summer in a way.... thanks for that too! ❤
The title of the song is "Livin' Thing" not Living Things. I loved the use of orchestration. ELO were great in the studio, however they copped a lot of flack using prerecording in concert and largely miming and giving a laser light show. I guess they were just ahead of their time with what "LIVE" actually could mean.
Sound on this seemed a bit muddy or low quality. Great song. Catchy eh? :) I think he's singing about love. Love is a 'Living thing' It's a terrible thing to lose. I really like their album Time. Very SciFi but the Prolog-Twilight combo really kicks it.
I can personally vouch for Jeff and say that the words of this song are indeed true. I did lose it (it seemed to have died within me) and it was the most terrible thing I had ever experienced in this life. It took a very long time to find/recapture it and have be a part of my life once more. If you haven't done so already? I urge you to make certain that the love in your heart is genuine and that its achored properly so that nothing could ever shatter it or make you feel that it wasn't one of the most important things in life. Protect it at all cost and surround yourself with others who share its importance. Being a ghost sucks, and I say this from personal experience.
I bought this 45 record when it came out and wore it out! My parents hated this song because of it..until I accidentally sat on it and broke it. I was heartbroken.
Great band. Great song. Please check out “All Over the World”. There is a great video of people dancing to this song. It’s one of the most uplifting videos I’ve ever seen (especially in these times)! You would love it. It’s very colorful, like you. 🥰
Seems to me it's about falling in love, getting scared, and sabotaging the relationship before the other person can break your heart. I think all of us can relate to that. Either having done it, or had it done to us. Especially when we were young and emotionally immature.
You should definitely react to "Atmosphere - The Last To Say". Pretty deep song that addresses a really big issue which is domestic violence. Ant is a great lyricist and in all his song you can hear a lot of emotion and the delivery is so amazing. Just check it out, you won't regret it!

She should react to Lesley Gore's Sunshine, Rainbows and Lollipops! : )
Although the current touring group has violins, cellos, and background singers.
ELO has many songs that are good as mentioned in the comments.
This is my favourite elo song
Mine too.
this is my favourite song full stop... ever since I bought the vinyl of 'A New World Record' as a kid back in 1976/1977...

To me ELO is the continuation of the Beatles if they didn't break up. Always thought ELO was very Beatlesly lol
He was always called Beatle Jeff👍
Absolutely, ELO was basically The Beatles 2.0
Jeff talks about how he was heavily influenced by the Beatles. It shows in his work.
That's what John Lennon said.
Naw, ELO is better, with Jeff adding in the strings he simply wrote better music.
Telephone line...great
ELO's El Dorado would be wonderful. Thank you.

Totally agree with you on 'Out of The Blue'...followed closely by 'A New World record' because it has my No. 1 E.L.O. song being 'Livin' Thing...

You should do a reaction to Shine A Love by Electric Light Orchestra. I think you’ll love it.
Amo essa banda.
you gotta react to "Sweet Talkin' Woman" by ELO
You REALLY need to listen and watch their Live from Hyde Park in London performance of "Roll Over Beethoven".
Always puts a big stupid smile on my face this song, thanks.

Great rabbit hole to venture down! 😊
I think so too!
To fully appreciate ELO ... check out Jeff Lynn's ELO Hyde Park Live Concert !
Very very and very pretty song from E.L.O, a Classic song 70s. Try Shangri la, Rock n Roll Is King, hold on tight, Nighttrider, Starlight .

You need to do "Love Is Like Oxygen" There's another interesting title and a song you probably haven't heard before.
Another song I strongly recall from my youth, way back then...
Old school goodness!!
This is the song that got me hooked on the Electric Light Orchestra.

ELO was the closest thing to the Beatles after the Beatles broke up. And they are partly responsible for symphonic metal.

Great choice! Please consider doing a very awesome ELO song that no one reacts to.. my favorite.. "Tightrope". Thanks.
Oh yeh, underrated song, top five song by them. Melodic poetry, and rhythm.
Good choice...'Mission' would also be good...
You were thinking of Madonna's "Material Girl" I think.
The song is called 'Living Thing' not Living Things.

Mister Blue Sky.
Can you react to a cool feel good song by a Canadian band from the 70s the song is SWEET CITY WOMAN ,by the STAMPEDERS,thank you.
Try live performances Wembley or Glastonbury
Almost as good as their song 'Telephone Line' but not quite :-)
Was told it was a ant-iabortion song and was never able to listen to it the same way again, just a thought
I think they were in an orchestra before starting elo
Now react to 'The End of the Line' by The Travelling Wilberry's' ... The official video. The lead singer on this song is part of that group too.
try elo ..last train to london
