The winch will work well if you don't use an impact. Because of the inertia of the spool and gear, it will give a lot of stress to that small shaft. But if you use a regular cordless drill, it will work just fine. And be careful of your fingers too! Been there before!!! Thanks Steve!
I'm predicting your double D washer you welded on to the socket will turn into a round hole with a matching round winch input shaft in a big hurry when you get a load on the winch. 😟
@@SteveRobReviews Don't let periodic failures stop you from continuing to modify and invent. Just lean from mistakes. and this contraption hasn't failed yet I.m just questioning it's durability not the function.
Nice hack Steve! If you had to anchor that thing to the ground to do some pulling, what's the best way to install it I wonder? 4x4 concreted into the ground?
i remember needing a socket that shape for a shock or something. i ended up using a die grinder on a hex socket to get the oval with two flats shape. I want to see this one work. Then i have an excuse to go buy an impact and a winch. Thank you for the how-to, Steve. Stay safe
@@SteveRobReviews i found a six point socket that was the same size as across the flats on the drive bolt. Probably 7/16 or 3/8.. i needed a solid grip so i took some time to do it. With a good bit in a milling machine it would not take long to fix a socket.
Looks like a great idea Steve. I just wonder if that flat piece will round out because its not very thick. Either way I can' t wait to see it in action. Got to be way better than hand cranking.
I went to the hardware store for a metric nut that fit , then I put the nut in place and drill it with 1/8 bit and pass a pin . Great use of it. Thanks.
The only thing wrong I can see with this is, I tried something similar with my tent trailer and it broke something. I don't even remember what exactly it was that broke. I like the idea pushing a button to do the work, sounds good to me. Who you kidding Steve a stud like you has plenty of cranking left in ya! 😁 P.S. Can you put me in your will, I really like that DeWalt 899. I think I need one.
This is not going to work. It's a good idea though. The problem is that the piece that you weld on is simply too thin, basically a guide piece for the handle. You need to get a second handle, and cut that piece off of it, and weld it onto the socket. Your current configuration will round out, due to the torque on that thin metal.
Hey why didn’t you just take the nut belong to the handle get another nut and screw one nut tight to the other on the treaded stub on the side of the winch then all you got to use is a socket and your impact gun . Once one nut is locked tight against the other it won’t move and you can replace it with the manual handle anytime you like . Just a suggestion
or weld it on and fill the flat sides on the shaft with weld and weld a socket to the handle, no taking anything apart plus you can use a ratchet or wrench in a pinch
@@manufcodice3279 I wouldn’t weld it on there will be to much heat travel through the shaft and if there are and greased bearings or plastic bushings in it the heat from welding it on will destroy it !!!!!

I'm gonna bet that doesn't work 😀 I think a drill would work better but you might need a winch with a lower gear ratio if your lifting anything very heavy. my experience with those winches is they take a good bit of cranking power if under very much load that a cordless drill don't have
If you had a lathe like Terry has that weld would have been easier to get to. (ha ha) Terry's got a great set up don't he? You tease, I wanted to see it work. Now I have to wait. :)
HAHAHA , I will try it as is but many have concerns about the thin wall rounding out so if this happens I will make a robust version that wont round over. Cheers bud

Hey did anyone ever try this boat winch on a side by side utv I have a 3500lb boat winch and was wondering how it would work on a side by side
Try it with a drill. I used a DeWalt drill to jack my travel trailer up and down to level it and it was smooth compared to an impact.
