  • Does Adding Compost To Your Soil Actually Make Your Grass Better?
I think this video shows proof that adding compost to clay soil improves the turf to be able to withstand drought better. This area is where my garden used to be and its had TONS of compost added. Its also the best looking turf after going a week with no water in a North Carolina dry summer.

And to me what raises my brow is how long you garden has been gone… you turned that into a test plot/ patch for blue grasses and other varieties over 2 years ago.

This is super interesting! You should pull deep plugs from both areas and show the cross-sections of the different soil profiles. Also, side-by-side soil test results for those two plugs would be really interesting as well.

I used a compost sand mix last year for my renovation and I can say it definitely makes a difference. I'll likely be using it as a top dressing for over-seeding this fall. 👊🏼

I have noticed the same thing in my NC lawn. I used black soil excavated from an old pond to fill in low spots in my yard and those areas stay green all summer while the rest of my fescue goes dormant.

Pete try this. Mix you a giant compost tea. Aerate it and spray your turf once a week. It works. I also topdress with mushroom compost. You are absolutely right. 👍

I like how it feeds the life in the soil. Compost and lime is all I put on my soil. my white clover and fescue love it. Great topic.

Pete, I love your passion on turf. I’ve commented quite a few times here in the comments section of your videos asking why you don’t add organic materials to your soil profile when you do your tilling or rotavation etc.
Organic matter is the life-blood to our soils, everything stems from a healthy base (just like our houses). Soils need humic & fulvic acid to thrive, materials like zeolite to absorb moisture & nutrients, Leonardite (brown coal) materials & just any organic materials (blood & bone, manures, etc) you can get your hands on & incorporate it into your profile, whether that’s rubbing down the holes after aeration, blending in with new soil or topdressing - anything. All of these materials help the turf out during times of stress, in this case drought. And I haven’t even mentioned the monthly maintenance applications of soil wetting agents which are just as crucial. In your particular case where you have no or minimal OM I would say it’s even more crucial.
This regime has been employed here in Australia for as long as anyone can remember. Adding organic matter to our soils is just basic soils 101. You MUST add OM continually - at renovation & as part of your regular monthly turf program. It just has to be continually replenished because it’s always being broken down by the microorganisms & good bacteria within our soils. My clients fine turf lawns all receive soil-drench & foliar treatments of OM alternating fortnights during the growing season as well as fortnightly foliar seaweed/humic applications during winter.
This is just my experience as a turf manager for 40yrs. I know what works so trying to pass on a little advice where I can.

Pete, I've been doing that for years. I use LeafGro from the big box and H/W stores here in my area. I was going to comment on the previous video about an obvious demarcation in front of the shed via the drone shot. I believe that's where the test plots were. Seeing is believing and there's your proof.

I find this very true. I renovated my front yard last fall with only compost. 2-3 inch cover. Zero weeds or almost none. The first yard to green up from winter. And now going into summer, it's still the only dark blue/green lush lawn on the street. TTTF.

I've seen the same thing with KBG. Places with good black soil with a lot of organic matter will have less problems with heat, disease and weeds and will have darker, healthier leaves. I'm currently planning to inject better soil into weak spots.

I use compost when I top dress after over seeding. Where I'm at my township collects and composts leaves and yard waste then offers that compost free to residents. Throw the guy on the machine at the public works yard $10 and he'll fill the whole back of your pick up for you. The county I live in also offers it cheap. I can have them dump 5 yards of it for about $185. Last I checked a 20 yard drop was ~$500.
I have the opposite problem. My soils is sandy and acidic. Very low CEC. Yup compost helps with that too. My lawn is only 5,000 sft but one of those manual push type compost spreaders has been well worth the money I spent on it. I was on the fence for something I'm only going to use once or twice a year, but so far I'm glad I spent the money on it.
Lastly thank you for showing the bare spots and drought stress that even the experts sometimes get. It makes us armatures who work hard and don't have anywhere near the pristine looking showpiece of a lawn you have feel not so bad about not having everything perfect. Quick question. Would you do anything to patch that bare spot this time of year (going into summer) or just leave it for the fall overseeding?

  • @charleswise5570

Pete, do you have an onsite compost heap, or pile? If not, would you consider starting one, or using one of those composting barrels? I have one, and they do a fantastic job with compost, especially living in the city. It actually saves a considerable amount of money, because we're buying less bags for trash pickup, and we have absolutely beautiful compost (Black Gold) to add to our flower bed, and container garden.
    As always, fantastic video!

I’ve noticed the same thing on my zoysia.
First section that I seeded without compost dries out quicker and gets hot spots the exact same place as my fescue would.
The second section with compost always looks healthier and never gets heat stress.
    Both are irrigated.

I take all the coffee grounds, banana peels, eggshells, orange peels. Anything and everything I can find food based and instead of throwing it down the garbage disposal I throw it in the yard and let them lawn mower mulch it up. I'm sure that kind of thing takes years and years to change a soil profile, but I'd say it works pretty good considering what you just showed me

I used to carry a bag of pure white sand to even out bits around customers turf but I've switched to a bag of compost. Putting back all that richness into the soil the turf areas heal quicker and you can see how they thrive afterwards. It costs me twice as much but the results are worth it, so are my customers.

I noticed that on your last Vid, Mr Pete, but forgot which side your garden was on, LOL! Another reason for a better stand of turf/heat tolerance is it is also a year older and more Mature. Thanks

Can you top dress TTTF with compost without having to bring the height of the fescue all the way down. And judging by your fescue leveling video from earlier this year it it can’t go on thick. The big question is this , they say 3 to 5 percent organic matter is correct. So is 15 percent organic matter harmful? I added compost and now my organic matter is up to 15 percent but I've read articles that try to say that's too much. The article are basically about can soil be to rich?

@Ross Kelly, I've done it both ways and recently after aeration. It filled some holes, but I can see it helped the compost get deeper than just setting on the top, still great results. Also the compost was hot from decay and stressed out the lawn and brought on some fungus when I put it down on 90 degree weekend, so wait till it's cooler.
