If Nepo plays his best at the candidates, Alireza plays his worst chess at the candidates
It's because Alireza got his hype because of his creativity and tactics as well as positional understanding. In the candidates almost all of those factors can be nullified by the huge amounts of preparation done by the players. And it seems like prep isn't Alireza's forte.
@@ZaheerHussain-wo2enBut Nepo got first place in both of the last candidates, so he’s 2/2 and currently tied as a leader. I wouldn’t put him in second place like that
@@ZaheerHussain-wo2ennepo is incredibly talented at a young age, even dare i say more talented than magnus. he just wasnt as focused on chess on his teenage years compared to his peers

+0.4 eval being “completely lost” for black (11:50) shows how good top players are at chess; down at my elo, being down 1.5 is usually fine
At 1000 elo someone could have 6+ and then hangs back rank mate
I believe the evaluation was worse with a deeper engine
You're like 1200?
@@Socio-Perspectiveor it's speed chess, but I would argue that eval isn't the whole story. Like, gms being +7 means that if they make one inaccuracy, they're done, but if I'm +7, that means my opponent is raging rn
Evaluation doesn't tell the whole story. Sometimes evaluation is even but you need a series of ultra precise moves to hold which the engine can find and that's why it evaluates position as even but from human perspective it's nearly lost.
Levy hasn’t lost a single game in the candidates EVER! Good job Levy!!! 😁

I do this, but instead of quitting, I just play bots
@@kashem425I loose even to bots and that's even more frustrating because they play the same opening again and again and still beat me
@@deveshgarg7974 yeah that’s ok. That’s why you analyze that game and find out why you lost and what the computer says the best way to defend. Then try again. I used to get demolished from the lowest bot all the time until I started using some training wheels to learn some basics.

the bad part is: because you are already down to 100
About the Vidit game, Levy says "the clock didn't play a big role in this game" but it's really only partially true.
Vidit REALLY took his time and it really looked like he was heading himself into time trouble.
The only reason Alireza didn't resign much earlier is because he pushed Vidit to time trouble by playing faster than usual to make him blunder. Otherwise the position is truely hopeless by the time he's down an exchange, and if not for the clock he'd resign immediatly
Also, Alireza's time usage in the early parts of the game was quite unwise. He played Bd7 very quickly, and same goes for Qb6, both of which are mistakes. So in fact, this is one of the only games where the clock was interesting and played a big role.
True. At one point i think around the move 12, Vidit had reached 58 minutes on his clock while Alireza with his Shervani had ~1 Hr 40 minutes. Position wise vidit was winning but time wise he was not, at that point he had 99.5% accuracy i believe while Alireza had 87.5%
Yup as soon as vidit hit the 40move mark and got the 30mins , alireza resigned.. only ally alireza had was vidit’s clock .
@@marksman6803 Also, Alireza was about to lose his rook for a pawn
13:41 Yeah he did say that at the start, but Levy does mention the clock and goes through what you said.

Magnus said Alireza got next and he has buckled under that pressure since then
Alireza had strong couple of tournaments which propelled his rating couple of years ago. I always though his general level is around 2750 (basically where all new generation if upcoming top players is), not 2800. and then he stopped playing, maintaining 2800, and when he restarted, he is dropping to where his real level is.
@@dmitripogosian5084 That's only a 50 point difference. Not a big deal. 2700+ is enough to win the candidates. He doesn't really focus or try that hard in this tournament. That's his problem.
He's always too nervous
It was so sad to see him play yesterday. The way it transpired. Poor kid, just 20 or so. I hope he gets a win today. Not for anything else, but just bring some relief for him.

In southern part of India generally intials are instead of surnames/lastname for example D. Gukesh, D here is his father's name which is Dommaraju and person's first name is gukesh
In northern part of India surnames/lastnames are used like samay raina
Here samay is person's first name and raina is his lastname ( in northern India surnames are generally taken from father)
In some parts of India middle names are also used in the case of North Indian it might be their father's name and in the case of South Indian it might be their first name and sometimes it might be completely different
In some part of North east india mother's surname is taken instead of father
India is a widely diverse country 🙃🙃
I think with Gukesh (and Humpy) Dommaraju (and Koneru) are their place names and not their father's names
Also a lot of North-East India do not have surnames at all... Like the Mizo cricket player Zothanzuala
I watch these videos in full!
Always interesting to keep up to date on these competitions!
I love watching chess tournaments but i have generally a hard time watching more then 1 bord at the time.
So i tend to pick 1 game and stick to that. Usually a bit after the opening to see what looks most interesting.
So having gotham just explain all the other interesting bits and bobs from the tournament is amazing!!!
Recaps of all these awesome tournaments is some of my favorite content you produce!!
For future reference, Levy had a title at upload time.
Thanks that helped a lot
No way
Indian names do not follow a standard convention. Yes , first name ,last name is pretty standard. But south indian names are different: Father's Name, First name. For example Vishy Anand's son's name is Anand Akhil. Vidith is first name, lastname format.

For science - can you title the next video “candidates round 7” or something similar.
I find it fascinating that the algo favors catchy titles and thumbnails and the possibility that humans are more likely to click it. But you mentioned your watch time being high. People who clicked because they were intrigued likely wouldn’t stick around after realizing it wasn’t some spicy drama.
He did that last year for the champ match and they all did poorly
Levy is actually a master of titles and thumbnails, never have i seen and levy video and said, "Ah this is boring might watch it later".
He literally said at the start of this video that the average time people watch is 20 minutes, which is insanely good, so clearly it works and people definitely stick around. He titled the video as candidate in the previous ones and it all did poorly
Honestly what he should have done is make a playlist everytime he did something like this. Thanksfully he did for this candidate, but not for the previous one (though there are viewers who make the public playlist that you can still search)
But why does title being correct matter so much?
He’s done it before and they don’t perform. The science is there. People are significantly more likely to click on something flashy
