I love the first three movies. Rise of the Lycans will always be my favorite just because I always thought Lucian was the coolest character. And as you stated, Kate Beckinsale is just gorgeous and I have no shame admitting she caused some "changes" in me around the time I was 12/13 lol. Always a joy seeing you revisit older movies H. Rise of the Lycans had my favorite werewolf type in it. The William Corvinus werewolves were perfect in my opinion. Never able to take human form, more beast than human, but at the same time they're bi-pedal instead of on all fours. Awesome. I hold the same value towards them as I do for the werewolf in American Werewolf in London, but for different reasons.
Dawg, Rise of the Lycans is so underrated. Evolution though should've ended with Marcus and William winning and have the sequel be a part 2 continuation because how can they have lost so easily since they're the first of their species.

I was 15 when this came out, saw it in the cinema with my mates. Still haven't quite got over Kate Beckinsale, but Bill Nighy was awesome in this film. For a film that was made in the aftermath of the Matrix, this was one of the best that managed to exist in that aesthetic. It's aged better than most of the others (like Equilibrium) and still holds up today.
I like the fact that they used prosthetics for some of the lycan scenes. That's why it holds up really well even today because it's real and not graphics. I really like Underworld. 😊👍
I really like this retrospect review! I enjoyed this movie, it was good for what it was. I like the whole blood memory and genetics aspect of the movie. A different twist on the whole vampire and lycan lore. Especially with the hybridization. I love Bill Nighy, he makes a GREAT villain! The lycan transformation was incredible! Not over the top, doesn't take to long. I liked how they kept the human features in the lycan form. I do wonder how much CGI went into it. I admit the hallway scene was cheesy, including the lycans "running" on the walls. The whole fight between the big lycan, and the whip vampire was silly. Amazing they included two whips, can't imagine how easy that would be to choreograph. I feel they didn't use the weapons in the scene effectively. OH! I remember seeing an interview with the cast, and the man who plays Raze apparently has a Masters degree in genetics and biology and helped influence the lycan transformation, and the genetics aspect of the movie! Really cool review Mr. H! I like this because going back and looking at older movies and how to stand against the test of time is cool. Listening to you explaining the Rule of Thirds changes my viewing if the movie. Will there be more retrospective reviews in the future?
My only beef with the Underworld movies is how weak they made vampires look compared to Lycans. Its the exact opposite problem that True Blood had, where Lycans were basically just wolves against OP vampires. I'd like to see a movie that make both look serious and equally dangerous for different reasons.
Understand your side of view. Huh.. I got frustrated that the werewolves and lycans seemed so weak. Also stupidly rush vamps with guns! And later when the vamps upgraded their bullets with silver nitrate
@@odinulveson9101 they did these berserker rushes which isn't a great tactic against projectile weapons, *but* the fact that the vampires were basically only effective against the werewolves if they have their guns, and end up torn apart with ease in close quarters, makes me feel like the powers the vampires have is just pointless except to live long (which they even share with the werewolves, so that isn't even a unique thing for them). They provide no real tactical benefit. Vamps shouldn't need to be so reliant on bullets to be dangerous to werewolves in hand to hand.

It was only after a while that they were able to stay rational while transformed and were able to at-will go back to being human. This was the point where the werewolves were enslaved and, presumably, put under strict population control by vampires who were old enough to remember the damage single feral werewolves were capable of inflicting among unsuspecting human populations. Considering this, it's likely that they still have feral urges while transformed that leads to less-than-stellar tactical decisions in the heat of the moment. In the "present" time, the werewolves as a faction are significantly under-resourced compared to the vampires so it's not implausible that they simply lacked sufficient munitions or logistics to have effective weapons for each engagement. They seem to be organized more along the lines of a secret militia than an established power, presumably due to the continued predations of the vampires that would quickly find and exterminate concentrations of werewolves.
Ahhhh Kate Beckinsale was my wife's "nemesis" for a good while. I told her it was only the costume, but she had none of it, lol. She's in an Amazon Prime flick called Jolt, and she hasn't aged a bit. Still disgustingly beautiful, and still an incredible actress. Let's face it, if you can be in a shitty Adam Sandler movie, and still have a career after the fact, you're doing it right, lol. Naturally after watching this review I wanted to rewatch them, but of course they're no longer available on Netflix in America, and Prime wants to charge for them. This...this right here is why it's so important to have physical copies of movies. When it comes to streaming services, one day it's there, the next it's gone. Bastards!
re-watched the whole series of films last week in a sitting (minus pee breaks and coffee time) and it was worth every minute of it. underworld is a much under-rated film.
Didn't realise this was on Netflix, will have to give it another watch now as it's been a long time! I do like the trick they used when Lucian chases after them as they drive away. Basically attachted a long strip of carpet to the back of the car Michael Sheen (I believe he did that stunt himself) ran along as the car was pulling it to make it look like he was running faster than the vehicle. Pretty sure they used the very same technique in Captain America: Civil War when Black Panther chases them through the tunnel
I love Underworld (2003). It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated as they took the whole " Forbidden Love" and "Romeo and Juliet" concept and theme to a another level as it was absolutely and positivity constructed perfectly from the very beginning to the end. The story, performance's, music, action sequences, direction, special effects, and cinematography was outstanding and incredible. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Selene and Michael Corvin as they both put tons of emotion and depth into their roles. To this day the ending still gives me chills and goosebumps 😰😱 and it was decent and I still watch it and I consider it a classic. Underworld (2003) is a true blue modern gem in cinema. Len Wiseman directed a classic that will be in our hearts forever. It never gets old.😍😎💯👍
I LOVE, Love, love Kate Beckinsale's UNDERWORLD franchise. I own ALL the Underworld movies on Blu-Ray. The 1st movie was the best and Awakening was my least favorite. But I still loved it. It is one of MY FAVORITE female led franchises ever! The mythology of Underworld is great. I just wish Kate Beckinsale really was immortal so she could keep making these movies.

To me I would say yes a lot of this film holds very well it is a good popcorn flick and a good rental. Micheal Sheen is so unrecognizable it's great and he is great. Bill Nighy is awesome as always . Beckinsale is great. Several other characters are great. To me the biggest issue is the acting from the character Michael we know why he was cast looks more than anything vs everyone else who matters has presence. And given how much I hated the vampire coven of Salen I was happy that with in moments of Marcus awaking he tears apart and burns the whole lot down.
I think you hit the nail on the head during this the person in charge really knew how to spend the budget, they had a solid story and were not fo used on too many charcters. And yes we had daft moments like the guns shooting though the floor instead of the lycan but it was consitant to the tone and atmosphere the series was known for and so did not feel that out of place certainly enough to allow you to stay in the moment. I feel in the end the series started to that typical thing where it went more in the relying on cgi but the core story still held togther well enough to enjoy them. Having seen the retorpecti e it does not surprise me that it holds up so well. It does surpise me how this movie series does not more often in conversation it still is a great example of working within your means and getting the most out of something as a film making perspective and gives the audience a very enjoyable movie as a result.

I love Underworld 1 & 3 & the one with the huge werewolf. Even if the series is extremely imperfect. It's lovable! Michael Sheen's best role ever (with Frost/Nixon). The universe would deserve a reboot of main characters but leaving the main lore intact. Of course, not in today's world.
One of my all time Vampire/Lycan (werewolf) series. Kate in that outfit, never tire of her attire. May not be perfect but regardless, always an enjoyable series. Fortunately stored in a hard drive filled with plenty of great stuff. Thanks for the retrospective review, interested in more. 🧛♀️ 🐺 👍🏼👏🏼
UNDERWORLD is a classic. I love this film. I watch it every year. Len Wiseman did a superb job directing the first two films. The film also got Wiseman the job directing Live Free or Die Hard, which is another great action film.
Great video man this franchise has so many fans and yeah I agree the story of this franchise is Awsome the deep lore, Victor is protracted as so damn powerful and perfectly casted really feel it was pure luck that Michael and Selene defeated him, the elder vampires/convernants are so fascinating! But I have to say the "eternity and a day" soundtrack used for this movie and the evolution sequal is still one of my all time favourite movie soundtracks, defo give it a listen on its own 💯🤌🏻🧘🏼♂️

I love the movie. This movie was a breath of fresh air in the vampire movies. Visually, the atmosphere was unique. Despite his CGI deficiencies, he made up for it with story and acting.

I didn't discover Underworld series until about maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Was pleasantly surprised by many things when I saw them, including learning that the original came out in '03
adore Selene so much.. and do not forget about RISE OF THE LYCANS as a great example of underrated Prequel story there's 4 true UNDERWORLD movies in my eyes
The black guy with the muscles and the deep voice who played the werewolf is the "Kevin" who co-wrote the script. He's actually a comicbook writer as well as an actor.
Loved 1 & 2 but after that I was like “meh”. Rise of the Lycans was already explained during the first film, so I never really cared about it (good film; just not needed). Great review. They still hold up. I love watching the behind the scenes when they show the practical effects done like Lucian running up to the car.
I just did the same thing put it on for background noise and ended up watching all of the underworld series. They are fun with good mythos and continuity.
Of course it's worth another look. Kate Beckinsale in a pvc bodysuit is worth lots of looks. Her best film apart from possibly the Total Recall remake.
I saw this as a kid. My attention span didn't allow me to sit through it for long. After seeing some clips, i must admit it's pretty amazing. Slick action sequences, solid acting, remarkable visual effects, and interesting contrast between the wild lycans and cultured snobby vampires. I have to get a blu ray to get the full experience.
Kate Beckinsale is always fantastic - Love watching her in that outfit. I agree with a lot of your review about this movie and the cinematography stuff. I might watch this again now.

This is one of best vampire series I've seen (yes, even Blood Wars was ok for me). There is so much you can do with this story and it's characters. I say they should create a TV show about this franchise and I believe, it done right, it can be a success.
Michael Sheen is a absolute 'beast' in this film. I think everyone forgets he's in this after doing roles like Frost Nixon or Good Omens as a winey angel worrying about his books and the apocalypse. But hey, it landed him the role of being Kate Beckinsales leading man(lucky bastard)
I remember watching this film and thinking that, despite some negative reviews, it was badass. Is it a perfect film? No, but it's still very enjoyable.
I love these movies because I overlook the silly gun, fighting scenes. They have a very well told story and great cast in my opinion. Glad to see and hear Mr H's take on this film. Looking forward to more!
I really liked this movie. However even though it was never affiliated I was waiting for Blade to show up. Side note: I always thought Raze's voice was cg. Couldn't believe that was his real voice.
Strangest timing, I just finished re-watching the first 2 in the background while working. I'm going to see Awakening tonight. I think they're of their time, especially the first one which is very nu- metal in its aesthetic. The exposition is pretty bad and many characters are pretty flat given how long they've meant to have lived. However I still quite like them, some of the effects are pretty great and they're quite enjoyable schlock. I'd still rather watch Underworld than the majority of crap Hollywood makes today - if not all of it.

For me this is one of the best horror films ever made. Not the scariest, but it didn’t have to be. Excellent character development, fantastic story, classy performances. Wasn’t too much of a fan of the second film but the other 4 in the franchise absolutely nailed it. At a time when we were still getting Friday 13th part 27 and a lot of other dross, this film stood up not only head and shoulders above other horror films, but films of other genres. Stunning performances from Kate Beckinsale & Micheal Sheen in this. So wish Beckinsale would reverse her decision not to make another.
Ah Kate with her keenon for werewolves and vampires.Van Helsing and especially Underworld was movies that hooked me hard in 2006 with their atmosphere. I love all the movies in the UW series for the most part. They are dark, quirky and with IMO immersive mythos. The only few things I didnt like is that managed to kill of Michael. Not sure they weaved it in as a logical conclusion with his capture or if the actor didnt want to star in next ones or denied. Just speculation. I also think the Lycans were to similar to rat like bipeds. But after the prequel, it made sense. The first werewolves were much more wolf like and couldnt shapeshift at will.
I really enjoyed the first Underworld. It was really great to see at the cinema as well. The Lycans were fantastic too. This and Interview with the Vampire are the only two vampire films I like, but would be interested to hear about the Underworld sequels, as I didn't pay attention to them.
The "cape" was the bottom back end of her leather jacket/coat They did use a lot of CGI. I think for the lycan transformation at least. But they definitely did it so well that you just can't tell
Would definitely want to see you cover the other films as I'm quite the fan of the series, even if it varies in quality film to film. Here's hoping that one day it returns, as I want to see more spooky vampster chicks and to see the development of her kid.
I mainly watched it because of the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale in that shiny, form-fitting latex outfit. I know she was getting tired of playing Seline towards the end of the series. It would have been cool to have better writing in these films to make it a solid series. However, as Mr. H said, watching the movie just to be a pervert watching sexy Kate is a legit reason in itself. Kevin Grevioux who portrayed the Lycan named Raze (and who co-wrote the film) I used to see as a background extra in episodes of _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine_ as a Starfleet officer. I know he does some other writing and voice work. Sidenote: The actress who portrayed Sonya -- Rhona Mitra -- in _Rise of the Lycans_ is the reason I saw _that_ third film. (She also was the Lara Croft model/face of the character in the 1990s).

After Brom Stoker's Dracula, Underworld is my fave. It is what is called timeless because of how well it was made

Having seen the retorpecti e it does not surprise me that it holds up so well.
It does surpise me how this movie series does not more often in conversation it still is a great example of working within your means and getting the most out of something as a film making perspective and gives the audience a very enjoyable movie as a result.

I love Underworld 1 & 3 & the one with the huge werewolf. Even if the series is extremely imperfect. It's lovable! Michael Sheen's best role ever (with Frost/Nixon).
The universe would deserve a reboot of main characters but leaving the main lore intact.
Of course, not in today's world.

One of my all time Vampire/Lycan (werewolf) series. Kate in that outfit, never tire of her attire. May not be perfect but regardless, always an enjoyable series. Fortunately stored in a hard drive filled with plenty of great stuff.

UNDERWORLD is a classic. I love this film. I watch it every year. Len Wiseman did a superb job directing the first two films. The film also got Wiseman the job directing Live Free or Die Hard, which is another great action film.
Great video man this franchise has so many fans and yeah I agree the story of this franchise is Awsome the deep lore, Victor is protracted as so damn powerful and perfectly casted really feel it was pure luck that Michael and Selene defeated him, the elder vampires/convernants are so fascinating! But I have to say the "eternity and a day" soundtrack used for this movie and the evolution sequal is still one of my all time favourite movie soundtracks, defo give it a listen on its own 💯🤌🏻🧘🏼♂️
Underrated franchise , only issue is Kate Beckinsales pistols holding 10’000 rounds a clip 😂 Bill Nighy brilliant vampire lord!

I love the movie. This movie was a breath of fresh air in the vampire movies. Visually, the atmosphere was unique. Despite his CGI deficiencies, he made up for it with story and acting.
Ahhh Underworld, one of the classics. Good action, good dialogue, good cgi. My mom introduced me to these films and still over the years I occasionally watch the first film.
Ive never thought these films were groundbreaking but i enjoy watching the entire series of films atleast once a year and kate is absolutely a beauty in it for sure

I didn't discover Underworld series until about maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Was pleasantly surprised by many things when I saw them, including learning that the original came out in '03
I remember my young self trying to work out how those modified 92FS Berettas could fire so many bursts from 15 round magazines.
Saw this one in the theaters… one of my favorite Sci-Fi movie franchises.

The black guy with the muscles and the deep voice who played the werewolf is the "Kevin" who co-wrote the script. He's actually a comicbook writer as well as an actor.
Kevin Grevioux was also the actor with the super deep voice, playing the Lycan called Raze 👍
Loved 1 & 2 but after that I was like “meh”. Rise of the Lycans was already explained during the first film, so I never really cared about it (good film; just not needed). Great review. They still hold up. I love watching the behind the scenes when they show the practical effects done like Lucian running up to the car.
I just did the same thing put it on for background noise and ended up watching all of the underworld series. They are fun with good mythos and continuity.
Of course it's worth another look. Kate Beckinsale in a pvc bodysuit is worth lots of looks. Her best film apart from possibly the Total Recall remake.
I saw this as a kid. My attention span didn't allow me to sit through it for long. After seeing some clips, i must admit it's pretty amazing. Slick action sequences, solid acting, remarkable visual effects, and interesting contrast between the wild lycans and cultured snobby vampires. I have to get a blu ray to get the full experience.
Kate Beckinsale is always fantastic - Love watching her in that outfit. I agree with a lot of your review about this movie and the cinematography stuff. I might watch this again now.
I would definitely like to see some videos on the follow up movies. It's good to see you enthusiastic about something. Reminds me of the Hellraiser story episodes, so good.

This is one of best vampire series I've seen (yes, even Blood Wars was ok for me). There is so much you can do with this story and it's characters. I say they should create a TV show about this franchise and I believe, it done right, it can be a success.
Underworld is my favorite movie franchise, Evolution I'd by far my favorite of the bunch.
Michael Sheen is a absolute 'beast' in this film. I think everyone forgets he's in this after doing roles like Frost Nixon or Good Omens as a winey angel worrying about his books and the apocalypse. But hey, it landed him the role of being Kate Beckinsales leading man(lucky bastard)
Looking back at this movie now it has held up quite well indeed. A lot better than many films that were released in later years regarding this genre.

I remember watching this film and thinking that, despite some negative reviews, it was badass. Is it a perfect film? No, but it's still very enjoyable.

I still own the DVD. One of the few films I rewatch few times. Very underrated movie.
I love these movies because I overlook the silly gun, fighting scenes. They have a very well told story and great cast in my opinion. Glad to see and hear Mr H's take on this film. Looking forward to more!

Strangest timing, I just finished re-watching the first 2 in the background while working. I'm going to see Awakening tonight. I think they're of their time, especially the first one which is very nu- metal in its aesthetic. The exposition is pretty bad and many characters are pretty flat given how long they've meant to have lived. However I still quite like them, some of the effects are pretty great and they're quite enjoyable schlock. I'd still rather watch Underworld than the majority of crap Hollywood makes today - if not all of it.
I have the blurays ,great movie saw it in cinema when it came out, kate beckinsale and sophia myles just gorgeous, got love bill what an actor so versatile.
when this came out Bill Nighy & Michael Sheen were already acting heavyweights in the British scene , so to have them both on vampire action franchise was a big effing deal.

I’ve seen all of them accept for the most recent one (Blood Wars), the second film is my favourite out of all of them.
Underworld was a great film. One of my all time favorites and a movie worth watching again when wanting a very well made film.
Haven't seen blood wars. But I wonder how much of it was inspired by the "World of Darkness" RPG game.
For me this is one of the best horror films ever made. Not the scariest, but it didn’t have to be. Excellent character development, fantastic story, classy performances. Wasn’t too much of a fan of the second film but the other 4 in the franchise absolutely nailed it. At a time when we were still getting Friday 13th part 27 and a lot of other dross, this film stood up not only head and shoulders above other horror films, but films of other genres. Stunning performances from Kate Beckinsale & Micheal Sheen in this. So wish Beckinsale would reverse her decision not to make another.

If you haven't seen these movies I recommend starting with the 3rd movie, it's a prequel. Also don't bother watching the 4th and 5th movie.
Ah Kate with her keenon for werewolves and vampires.Van Helsing and especially Underworld was movies that hooked me hard in 2006 with their atmosphere. I love all the movies in the UW series for the most part. They are dark, quirky and with IMO immersive mythos. The only few things I didnt like is that managed to kill of Michael. Not sure they weaved it in as a logical conclusion with his capture or if the actor didnt want to star in next ones or denied. Just speculation. I also think the Lycans were to similar to rat like bipeds. But after the prequel, it made sense. The first werewolves were much more wolf like and couldnt shapeshift at will.

It was two fold, she could have just killed the lycan and jumped through the window at the end of the hallway
I really enjoyed the first Underworld. It was really great to see at the cinema as well. The Lycans were fantastic too. This and Interview with the Vampire are the only two vampire films I like, but would be interested to hear about the Underworld sequels, as I didn't pay attention to them.
First time I saw Kate Beckinsale... Fell in lust with her at first sight, and BTW she still is a heartstopper.

The Milla Jovovich RE movies are a guilty pleasure for me; they’re quite bad but still pretty fun to watch.
Great film, made even better when watching ‘Rise of the Lycans’ which does a great job of expanding the mythology.

They did use a lot of CGI. I think for the lycan transformation at least.
But they definitely did it so well that you just can't tell
Those films were pretty fun. Not high art or anything, but they weren't trying to be. Wish we got more stuff like it these days.
Would definitely want to see you cover the other films as I'm quite the fan of the series, even if it varies in quality film to film. Here's hoping that one day it returns, as I want to see more spooky vampster chicks and to see the development of her kid.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I didn't care much for the sequels but this one was very fun.
I mainly watched it because of the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale in that shiny, form-fitting latex outfit. I know she was getting tired of playing Seline towards the end of the series. It would have been cool to have better writing in these films to make it a solid series. However, as Mr. H said, watching the movie just to be a pervert watching sexy Kate is a legit reason in itself.
Kevin Grevioux who portrayed the Lycan named Raze (and who co-wrote the film) I used to see as a background extra in episodes of _Star Trek: Deep Space Nine_ as a Starfleet officer. I know he does some other writing and voice work.
Sidenote:
The actress who portrayed Sonya -- Rhona Mitra -- in _Rise of the Lycans_ is the reason I saw _that_ third film. (She also was the Lara Croft model/face of the character in the 1990s).
Bill Nighy one of the best vampires ever, it's been a long time since we got a good vampire movie.

Literally netflix the series myself this week can't help but agree. Thanks for making me feel old as saw these back when they came out and yes they stand the test of time well for me first 2 and rise of lycans. 3rd and 4th watchable but less so than these 3
