I remember this match very well. Ferrero was leading 2 sets to 1, and in the fourth set was 3-1 and serve, when Guga did a stop, using the "medical time-out". It broke Ferrero's rythm. Anyway, this match was really a final. Guga was the best clay court player of the era; Ferrero was clearly the second. This year, Spain won its first Davis Cup, having Ferrero as the hero. He defeated Safin, Kafelnikov, Rafter and Hewitt (4 ATP number ones) to win the tournament. Two awesome players. Miss them.

Acho que nenhum país do mundo o governo investe em tênis. Aqui no Brasil o governo apoiou numa época. Acho que duas coisas aconteceram. Ficou muito caro se profissionalizar no tênis. Os grandes torneios se concentraram mto na Europa. O circuito de acesso tbm ficou caro. O Brasil chegou a ter uns 30 challengers em ano e nessa época o banana bowl trazia para o Brasil os melhores juvenis. Segundo tema é a concorrência do jogo universitário vs profissionalizar. Naquela época não era tão acessível brasileiro conseguir bolsa em universidade americana com tênis. Então mtos jogadores tenta a carreira profissional. Eu que acompanho o tênis desde nível future vejo a mulecada sul americana debamdando as universidades. É muito mais garantido conseguir algo, o início no tênis profissional é muito cruel. Quem tem 25 mil dólares anuais entre os 14 e 18 anos para bancar a carreira internacional de um tenista que nem sabe se vai virar. Vejo no Chile, Argentina e Peru essa decadência. Mesmo na Argentina hj o Delpo é ponto fora da curva. Se esses tenistas hj top 200 argentinos com o talento que tem seriam top 50 se fossem europeus. O tênis sempre foi um esporte de elite, mas nunca foi tão caro se profissionalizar como é hj. Além disso, por problemas de apostas, ficou pior, os futures nem premios pagam mais.
Ron P I agree. But unfortunately for the very tall people tennis is dominated by people who can hit hard and run like the wind. The tallest players don’t have the speed and mobility of Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, etc.
Ron P I agree. But I think Del Potro is a rarity. Guys like Isner, Querrey, Karlovic, Victor Amaya (6’7” tennis player from years past) don’t dominate like the fleet of foot. It seems the best players are around 5’10” to 6’3”. Another guy who hit extremely hard was Marat Safin. I think he was 6’4” and could crush balls off serve, return, forehand, and backhand. Extremely talented and yet only won 2 majors.
At this year's Rio Open, Larri Passos told us, in a public conversation, that Guga played with his heart. That is mainly what got him so far, as well as his wonderful technique.
Great highlights, superb quality howeveri believe it needs the scoreboard as a guide to see the tension on the point. I did watch a highlight yesterday with Wawtinka and Murray and you guys put in writing what was going to happen. I think a 20 or 30 minute video with scoreboard is the perfect balance. I also loved the no commentary.
@@AS-js7kb no cause Guga was never bothered by high top spins to his backhand since he was lanky and tall. Would give the edge to Nadal but not by much.
@@HCaulfield115 Kuerten never reached the semis of any other slams except French Open. Meaning there were many other ways to beat him besides just high balls to the BH. Guga is not as versatile as a Wawrinka even. I think 80% in Nadal's favor at the very least.

It was when ATP still had a tournament at UCLA on hard courts. Guga would wind up on almost every ground stroke & hit with action plus pace. Injuries hit when he was #1 & dominant.

The crowd went wild when Kuerten would paint a heart on clay with his racket. I was in Paris working that summer and only able to watch in big screen not free those days to get tickets in that tournament in 2001 when he beat Alex Corretja at the final.

Can certainly see some real similarities in the games and stroke mechanics of Ferrero and his protégé Alcaraz. Ferrero didn't have the same explosive power though.

One was Ferrero in 5 sets and the other one an unknown american. Nadal in the 13 Roland Garros won, he just lost 2 games!!! There is a big difference in numbers and the way to win. And Nadal won that titles facing the best player in history Federer and the 3th Djokovic. There is no comparision betwen Nadal and anyone in clay!!
watching clay court game is relatively boring when compared to Grass / hard courts . Completing a point takes lot of gruelling rallies in clay court ( infact bit boring) which even gives wear and tear to the body of the players. Its a different skill set which was shown by likes of bjorg, jim courier, ivan lendl , sergi brugera , kuerten and then Nadal. good memories of kuerten brought back.
