  • A day's work of digging out snow at my cabin using back-saver shovel, snow pusher/plow, human-powered show shovel, snowblower, and tractor snowblower service "Serene Lakes Enterprises" on Sunday March 5, 2023 in Soda Springs, California near the Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch, and Royal Gorge ski areas - an example of "snow removal"

    Bought this for my small back deck in the Eastern Sierra. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN We get A LOT of HEAVY snow so I was a bit skeptical but it was worth it! After the first storm of the year this has exceeded expectations! It throws snow very well, even 10-12” + that said the more it piles up the harder it is to maneuver the machine. It is exceptionally light weight and overall exactly what I was looking for. If you have a large amount of snow and a lot of area to clear, you may consider something with a drive engine to help maneuverability, but for decks, second stories, roofs etc, you can’t beat the light weight to great snow throwing ratio. Side note, the chute rotator is a bit flimsy and it initially didn’t seem to work, after a few uses it seems to have loosened up.

    Thanks for sharing winter life in the mountains of CA. That tractor snowblower is definately the right tool for the job. I just don't understand the push to eliminate gasoline powered equipment. There is no way a battery powered unit could handle that workload. In our Buffalo, NY area we had our 2 major storms. Didn't hear much bragging about battery powered snowblowers during that period.

    • @ledsalesoz
      @ledsalesoz Рік тому

      At this stage, yes, that's true for rechargeable batteries. I own an EV and would never go back to ICE vehicles, but for those tasks, ICE vehicles are going to be required for the moment, but eventually they will be run on e-fuels. The whole e-fuel fuel cycle is horribly inefficient, but until we have mega-high density batteries, they will be required for extreme edge cases like this.
      But then, we do have very high energy density single-use batteries like aluminium-air batteries which could already do this job, they just need to be swapped out rather than being recharged, with the aluminium sent back to the smelter for reprocessing. They have (realistically) 5-6 times the density of existing lithium batteries, but their theoretical energy density is much higher. So, it is already viable.
      It's important to remember that with ICE vehicles, 70% or more of the fuel is simply wasted as heat anyway. Sure, a small amount will heat the cabin on such a vehicle, but most is still wasted, so battery equivalents don't actually need anywhere near the energy contained in liquid fuels because electric drive systems are vastly more efficient.
      To give you an idea how inefficient ICE vehicles are, a litre of petrol contains almost 9kWh of energy. That would push a typical electric car around 55km, or 34 miles per litre. That's around 130 miles per US gallon. And that's a typical EV. Think how far your ICE vehicle gets on a gallon of fuel, and that's how inefficient it is...

I’ve seen reports of current electric trucks and cars who are having serious issues charging and maintaining charges in colder temperatures.

    You will survive, lots of people don’t know how to live in snow. The biggest issues for people are, didn’t stock up on supplies, electricity goes out, don’t have enough wood or can’t get to it, roof or deck collapses, they get so covered they suffocate, didn’t clear their walkways, doors and windows. By maintaining it at 4-5 ft of shoveling is better than 10 ft and buried. Your lucky that you got an A frame, won’t collapse as easily. Got an emergency spot to move to. Just curious though, where do you keep your firewood?

    • @stevecarle8851
      @stevecarle8851  Рік тому +3

      Funny you should ask about firewood - I heat my home in Sonoma County exclusively with wood from my property (reduces fire danger). At Serene Lakes, wood fires 🔥 are no longer permitted except for preexisting fireplaces/wood stoves. The previous owners converted the Aframe to a propane fireplace so, unfortunately, wood fire is not an option there now.
