Everyone should watch TheWeasle's breakdowns for controversial decisions. Great UA-camr that understands the current rule set with the knowledge on how to apply it to the fights. Due to the way striking effectiveness is measure, damage>volume, Makhachev just edged it. However P4P-wise, imo, had they been the same size (volk slightly more power), the strikes would've been causing a bigger impact and leading to more rounds for Volk.
I watch his vidoes but he was a bit inconsistent to me on this one because usually he would break down the rules on 10-8 rounds further and using the rules round 5 is a 10-8 but he didn’t bother even trying to break that down and just wrote it off as a 10-9 and I think it’s debatable
If judges can give porier and mcgregor 3 a 10-8 for the first round when conor was getting beaten up on the ground then why not score that for round 5 of this fight? Easily could’ve.
Makhachev won rounds 1, 2 and 4. Volk won 3 and 5. Just because Volk outstruck him statistically doesn't mean he inflicted more damage and a lot of his strikes weren't effective. When makhachev had his back he was in a finishing position which is always going to win on the judges scorecards over the fighter who is throwing those short punches behind because those aren't effective strikes.
Volk did no damage to Makhachev at the end of round 5 where the Geordie thinks Volkanovski was "beating the living **** out of Makhachev".Because If you watch BT Sport's UA-cam video "UFC 284 Fight Highlights) in slow motion (i.e. slow speed), you will definitely see that Volkanovski didn't not connect the strikes that he was throwing at Makhachev when Volk was on top of him
Across the whole fight volk did more dmg, no one thinks its solely about the final moments of the fifth. Control time shouldn’t have even come into play with the dmg difference. Just look at their faces at the end, the dmg was pretty clear.
This fight definitely must be rematched. One of the best fights of all time in some ways but without a real proper definitive victory.
