I loooooved this kind of videos! And The Name of the Wind is my fav book of all time too!! I would recomend 3 of my fav reads of this year: The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, so magical and whimsical, beautiful writing and a fierce but so wise female lead aaaaaand russian setting and fantasy elements; The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty, Oh! The world bulding is strong with this one! Plus... gray characters everywhere! Like seriously... I still can't choose a side and I actually found myself rooting for a character I wasn't supposed to. And Forest of a Thosand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao, a reimagining of the evil queen in an east asian fantasy setting... like... need I say more? Hope you get to any of these, I will looking forward to your opinion 😊
PeruseProject the name of the wind has a wonderful anniversary edition out which comes with full page illustrations. I think you are going to love it!!!!!
Thank you for recommending books that I’ve never heard of. I feel like most of these booktube channels all talk about the same books over and over. This video was super refreshing. Subscribed!
It's been six years since the second book came out so I can only hope for you (and many others) that the third one will come soon!!!! fingers crossed! :)
Another high fantasy series I enjoy very much lately is the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It gets more attention lately for the video game series based on it but the books are actually great as well. And since the author is Polish, there are some really fun Eastern-European folklore elements in the worldbuilding.
You are so incredibly eloquent and well-spoken, I could listen to you talk about books for hours. Every single series mentioned in this video you described in such an amazing and capturing way, really making me feel like you grasped and thorougly explained the entirety of what each of these books present and have to offer. Now I really want to read all of them and my poor wallet won't be able to take it.
I bought the Darker Shade of magic series that you recommend and I'm so glad I did. I just finished and loved it! Now one of my top favorite books now! Thank you so much!
The Name of the Wind... I can't even begin to describe how great it is! I was in a bit of a reading slump when I picked this up and it really brought back why I loved to read. I wish he would give a date for his third book...
Have you tried Clan of the Cave Bear. I do not recommend the rest of the series but the first is really cool. I got sucked in, and ended up reading them all but they were …. *………Oh that's cool………….like that.
I recommend The Land Of Stories. It’s a great series to read!! It’s about two twins named Alex and Conner And They Accidentally Fall Into A Book About Fairy Tales. That’s Where They Meet All The Faries, Queens, Kings And Even Jack, Goldilocks And Red Riding Hood. There’s Six Books and in each book they go on amazing adventures.
I just have to watch the first minute an 17 seconds to say that I already love your video. The name of the wind and the wise man's fear are absolutely a must for fans of fantasy. Everytime i find a guy, who also red these stories, we can't stop talking about them
Elsa Ruuskanen I’d say WOT is more complex personally though I am a fan both. The number of characters you follow and the history you explore is truly vast. But there are 15 books in a WOT . WOT is definitely more high fantasy though, and the authors borrowed from each other since they were very good friends for instance WOT has “The Game of Houses” which is pretty similar to the political “Game of Thrones” (WOT did come first). Robert Jordon wrote a short blurb on the front cover of A ‘Game of Thrones’ and GRRM credits this with kickstarting his books popularity. But they were great friends as I said, much like how Tolkien and C.S Lewis were.
:tugs braid:, Going to have to strongly disagree on this one. Books 6-11 were slow and sometimes downright painful to read. The female characters are one dimensional and all 1000 of them are written practically the same way. The first book was written as a one of, which causes Jordan to have to retcon Rand's power and re introduce it to the reader. All that being said Sanderson wrapped the series up pretty well and even though it was painfully predictable it still had a lot of fun moments.
mrblump I don’t think they’re one dimensional at all, some of them are perhaps annoying but they aren’t all written the same way. Nynaeve goes from being my least favourite of the women to be my favourite by the end of the series and Cadsuane grew on me immensely. They are however very prominent in the story and exist in society with almost equal status to the male characters, which is somewhat unusual for high fantasy. It’s not all golden but the size and scale of the world he creates is remarkable, and although the final actual showdown with the Dark-one is somewhat predictable, I wouldn’t say the journey to get there is, nor the actual ending of the series. Also what about Rand’s power was retconned after Book 1?
Trajan compare the female characters to those in series like Stormlight archives or Kingkiller chronicles. I am fairly certain Jordan had only interacted with a single women(his wife) for the last 50 years of his life and based every single female character off of her or a fantasy of her. The characters say the same lines over and over and over again and they become stereotypes of themselves until Sanderson takes over the series. The publisher had not approved WOT to be a series so Jordan wrote it to be a one off if need be. Hence Rand handily dispatching the Forsaken at the end of book one with god like powers not to see powers on that scale again for MANY more books. Don't get me wrong, WOT is not a bad series but Jordan fell short in many area's and because of that it does not hold up against many other series out there.
i went back to your first favorite fantasy books video and then to the begginers guide one and i love how i've followed you through the last four places you've lived since starting youtube! love seeing you achieve your goals with great success. and thank you for instigating me to keep reading
I literally just came back from the library where I bought The Fate of the Tearling. This is a trilogy you introduced me to and I love you for it because it is now one of my all time favorite fantasies!
"There's gonna be more books in this series" 😍 what???! I just finished the 3rd shades of magic book and loved them. I didn't know there would be more!!
The Way of King's is spectacular and a must read in the fantasy genre that will easily become your new fav. I also loved Anne Bishops Black Jewel series. It took a bit to get into but was fantastic!
Id love to see a video on your favorite books with male leads. I often see a lot of favorite female leads on booktube, but i love a good strong likable male leads just as much as a strong female lead.
A really good one is legend by Marie lu it has two perspectives but normally I feel like male perspectives aren't done well, Marie lu does it really well and I really recommend her books (ie the young elites)
This couldn't have come at a better time. I literally just finished the last book in the Black Prism series last night (per your recommendation) and my heart sank when I found out the next one doesn't come out until fall of 2018. I have been reading that series for the past year and I honestly don't know what to do with myself until next year. Lol. I suppose I will have to start a new series and hope that they're as good if not better. Honestly though, the prism series has been a HUGE blessing in that this past year has been very hard for me and it has helped in more ways than I ever thought a fantasy serious would, so thank you. Keep up the great work. ❤️
I really enjoyed the Song of the Lioness series when I was younger, and recently bought both books of the sequel series. I'm excited to get into them! I'm glad that Six of Crows made it onto your list among all of these other amazing series. I really want to reread it sometime soon, but I'm trying to hold off so I can experience it all again.
I've never been on your channel nor seen you before, but within a minute and a half and hearing your #1 is also Patrick Rothfuss made me instantly subscribe. I look forward to all the new material and content you create, cheers!
I clicked on this because it was on the recommended side bar. Great, now I want hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of books. *slow clap* you have tapped into the heart of a book lover, inspiring author, romantic, and fantasy obsessor. *Subscribes*
Adelina how come? I know it requires you to be 100% concentrated on what you're reading because of the multiple povs and timelines, but the way that everything comes together was absolutely amazing, at least that's my personal opinion
Andrea Papadopoulou I was really excited to read it, because I love everything related to the circus. This book was also so hyped, I was so ready to read it. But I just didn’t feel it 😕
Thank you so much! Your review was straight to the point and your excitement and description made me want to read everything now! I can't wait to get started on your list as I haven't read any of them yet!!
It's so good! I recently got Oathbringer and holy crap it is huge! But I was told that the short story Edgedancer needs to be read first so I can't start it yet...
I think a series you would like since you enjoy unique magic systems and middle grade fantasy adventures is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. This series follows Nita and Kit as they discover that magic is real and that it is the job of wizards to make sure The Lone Power doesn't hurry entropy along. What makes the magic unique is the fact that is magic really fantasy magic per se but a scientific magic. Nita and Kit have to use formulas and calculations and the language of magic to use magic. This series takes to the bottom of the oceans and the farthest reaches of space, back in time and into ones soul. So good.
I just started watching your videos and I really wanted to get into fantasy (and reading) and just started Six of Crows. I was only able to read the first chapter, but it was AMAZING.
Gabriela Ramírez Zanon Ghovatto that's kinda true...I expected more from the blood of Olympus....not that it was bad...but after the whole prophecy... It was over in like 10 minutes or smn
I love The Queen of the Tearling trilogy as well, the ending really took me by surprise and I still don't think I am over it. I also love The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson, the Worldwalker trilogy by Josephine Angelini and Mistborn has also become a new favourite of mine - I still have to read all the books that take place after The Hero of Ages - you kind of inspired me to read it and my friend as he got them for me so thank you :)
Just downloaded almost all (every book I haven't yet read) and now feel overwhelmed by how many book I have to listen to and they just need me to endlessly listen. Here's to never sleeping again.
I think at the moment my favourite is Everlife-trilogy. It’s quite new and I just love it. The main character is so refreshing and her obsession for numbers is so interesting. Also the story telling is great and you read through it really quickly. The twist and turns are less but still it is a really good book. Also the fantasy in this book just made me wanna live in it. I really recommend it if you like a good fantasy book mixed with romance.
I have no idea how I came across this video, it automatically just started playing while I was busy doing things. I was pleasantly surprised by this video, and will certainly have to checkout the books which you recommended, since I completely agree with you on a few of your choices which I have read.
I would really recommend His Fair Assassins trilogy by Robin LaFevers starting with Grave Mercy. It’s one of my favorite series and I think you would absolutely love! It’s has history, politics, cool magical elements, action, badass lead female characters, dark and twisty and just overall beautiful stories that weave together :)
I would highly recommend Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. The easiest way to describe this series is that it's what SJ Maas books could have been. The world is incredible and the characters are wonderful. It's diverse with enough historical notes to round everything out. The main draw of this series for me is its focus on friendships. The bond between the two main female characters is the single most important relationship in the series and I am here for it. 10/10 would recommend
This is why i love your channel: the list was composed of some of my all time favorites and the others are super high on my tbr! Great video and happy holidays !
Okay, you pretty much named all of my favourite books except: The Demon Cycle by Peter V Brett, The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch and Danielle Jensen's series (name escaping me) that starts with A Stolen Songbird.
Yay!!! It makes me so happy to see the Gentleman Bastards mentioned. They're my favorite books ever. Locke Lamora is one of my favorite characters ever, right next to Phedre from the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. I don't understand WHY more people don't talk about Gentleman Bastards
I've just started it, may I ask to anyone else who has read it, would you recommend it to a mid twenties male? I picked it up looking for something new but now I'm thinking it might get a bit too twilight-y.
Alec Pitcher if u like gory, thrill, badass books, i HIGHLY recommend “conquerors saga series” ITS AMAZING OMG PLS READ IT, she’s a badass and i bet you will never read anyone as cruel as she is :) so yeah
@@alec7568 I definitely recommend it. Sometimes you have to be patient with the characters but it's TOTALLY worth it. It the BEST series I've ever read 😉 you're gonna be mindblown at the plot twists
@Alec Pitcher Well, I'd say no. I'm an 18 years old male who primarily reads adult fantasy, but who occasionally dips into YA. Short (-ish) answer: I'd say that the first two books are really good, but from there it goes downhill and turns into an poorly written and edited cringefest (a bit harsh maybe but no one I've talked to about it have denied the truth of my thoughts - although not always agreed) Longer answer (spoiler-free): It was first after the forth book that I became really annoyed by Maas' writing and during the fifth, it further compounded. The whole fifth book especially felt cringy and porly written as well as edited. Examples of poor writing/editing: her describing characters feelings when telling through other character's perspective, things that makes no sense gets no explaination - people can locate each other across worlds with no other explaination than the fact that the other characters are also being a bit perplexed (or once that the character had a gut-feeling it was the right way), and worst of all, characters' thoughts are lying - for example, someone is thinking that everything goes to shit and later says that it was all planned from the beginning, contradicting her own previous thoughts. The latter problem is to give the story tension while trying to make the character feel badass - not worth it though... Edit: and as for romance, it gets a lot worse, A LOT. Fifth book is almost porn
I just finished One Dark Throne and I am OBSESSED. I need the next one like air. Have you ever read The Abhorsen Chronicles? Beautiful world-building in a dark fantasy novel full of political intrigue and turns that aren't cliche.
i'm currently listening to 'the wise man's fear'. have you read 'the lies of locke lamora'? a friend of mine reccomended it to me , but i'd love to hear your opinion on it!
Yaaay, I've been waiting for this video for a while. I've only read two of the series you've mentioned but they're on my all time favourites as well so I'll definetely give a try to the others.
I would love to hear your opinion on HOW TO HANG A WITCH and it's sequel HAUNTING THE DEEP by: Adriana Mather. It is an amazing story and I think you would enjoy it ;)
The Queen's Thief series is one of my favorite series ever. When I discovered that Thick as Thieves was releasing, I flipped out and pre-ordered it. ...and then haven't read it yet. *face palm* I really want to reread the whole series as a refresh. It's been several years since I was in that world. In other news, Brandon Sanderson is my hero, and The Stormlight Archive is my all-time favorite series. :D Thanks for sharing!
Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy is a must read. It's a bit more old-school, but Fitz is seriously a fantastic protagonist. And there's lost of political intrigue!
Oh yes. The Realm of the Elderlings is absolutely my favourite fantasy series, and as the final book is now out I was able to read it competely, no waiting for anything to be released. Fell in love with so many characters in this series.
It's sci-fi, but has a very similar feel to the Farseer series: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorkosigan_Saga Plus the Cordelia Naismith books that tell the mother's story.
The Kingkiller Chronicle is my fav story of all times! Every day I hope Rothfuss will tell us when the third book is coming out. I'm dying to read the queen of tearling but I'm waiting for the third one to come out here in Brazil. I started reading Brandon Sanderson because of you and now you're making me crave for Brent Weeks books aaaaaaaa
I love Turner's Thief series! Especially the third book when you get an outside perspective on characters we thought we really knew in book 2. Her books are really smart and she explains the political systems so smoothly that you really understand why the different rulers act the way they do according to circumstance. You might like Wheeler's Kingfountain series. It's a play on King Arthur but the political-magic system works really well and it's fun to read how he wove Arthurian legends and some real history into the novels. Also there are really strong female characters and that's a must for me in a series.
I love SO MANY of these books or really want to read them when they're finished. I've been buying Brent Weeks since the second book when it was a trilogy...I am beyond ready to read it! I love that you featured GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS and KISS OF DECEPTION; they're favorites of mine, too, and they don't get quoted a lot as favorites! (You know Mary Pearson has a companion series coming out this year, right? I AM SO EXCITED FOR IT!!!
I love how booktubers turn away the spines in the thumbnail to keep the book anonymous, but then there's the Six of Crows duology
Exactly! I can recognize it anywhere! 😁

Adelina YES THE WAY OF KINGS I'm reading Oathbringer in the moment!
Sophia Mok how is it? I’m gonna read it after my exams. I’m literally dying I can’t wait
It's so good! I recently got Oathbringer and holy crap it is huge! But I was told that the short story Edgedancer needs to be read first so I can't start it yet...
squidy2343 wait whattt😩😩I haven’t read the short story either
I think a series you would like since you enjoy unique magic systems and middle grade fantasy adventures is the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. This series follows Nita and Kit as they discover that magic is real and that it is the job of wizards to make sure The Lone Power doesn't hurry entropy along. What makes the magic unique is the fact that is magic really fantasy magic per se but a scientific magic. Nita and Kit have to use formulas and calculations and the language of magic to use magic. This series takes to the bottom of the oceans and the farthest reaches of space, back in time and into ones soul. So good.
Love this! I got a lot of new recommendations :) I read The Seven Realms because of you and it's one of my favorites of all time now.
I just started watching your videos and I really wanted to get into fantasy (and reading) and just started Six of Crows. I was only able to read the first chapter, but it was AMAZING.
Have you read Rick Riordan's Kane Chronicles? Such an underrated series!
Whitney Sprague soo true!!
Yes! I honestly think its better than both heroes of olympus and Magnus chase
It’s his worst series easily
Gabriela Ramírez Zanon Ghovatto that's kinda true...I expected more from the blood of Olympus....not that it was bad...but after the whole prophecy... It was over in like 10 minutes or smn
Whitney Sprague meh, it's wateves
I read The Girl of Fire and Thorn trilogy so long ago and it's still one of my favorites! Time for a reread!
do a bookshelf tour x
Diplomat of Uram will always be one of my favorites. Great list by the way!
Bookish Vegan omg yes! I was a bit mad about the ending of the Fate...I just don't know how to feel about it
Seriously that ending.... the writing and the characters were beautiful
Oh hell yes, i most definitely had a bookhangover after finishing the Tearling Trilogy in one go.
Just downloaded almost all (every book I haven't yet read) and now feel overwhelmed by how many book I have to listen to and they just need me to endlessly listen. Here's to never sleeping again.
Man my favourite fantasy book (series) of all time is definitely the good old lord of the rings saga
I have to say this is an amazing video!!! I pretty much added every series that I didn't have on my TBR to my TBR... Thank you so much!!!
Awww, no Brandon Sanderson
:(
I've been reading the name of the wind and its taking me so looong!! This is probably the longest its taken me to read a book..
You INCLUDED THE queen of the Tearling trilogy!!
I read the kiss of deception last year because you talked about the series and I have just finally picked up the second book!
You've done it, you've sold me on every single one of the books you mentioned lol
Kendare Blake is INCREDIBLE, I'm so glad you love her books!
I think you would very much enjoy The Demon Cycle by Peter V Brett. Best of all, I believe it is now a completed series, ripe for a marathon.
I really recommend it if you like a good fantasy book mixed with romance.
really love the darker shade of magic trilogy!
retweet
my only problem is Lila Bard. She's so unlikeable that it hurts
You touch on so many things I love about fantasy systems. A few of these are on my to-read, and a couple I need to get back to.
I was kind of surprised that the Seven Realms series wasn't in here since you love it so much
It’s in my first video!
The Kiss of Deception is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Lia grows so much throughout the series! So bada**!
yay. another equestrian and a book worm !! finally found one!! 🖤
I really love Six of crows ♡ They're my babies
Nair Salinas Amen.
same
Kanej is life ❤
I have no idea how I came across this video, it automatically just started playing while I was busy doing things. I was pleasantly surprised by this video, and will certainly have to checkout the books which you recommended, since I completely agree with you on a few of your choices which I have read.
You should totally try the Red Queen series! Edit: By Victoria Aveyard
These recoms were amazing! I feel like your reading preferences are very close to mine so I have read so many great things because of you. thank you!
Hi fan-tastic fan-tasy fan-dom! (SOMEbody had to).
THE KINGKILLER CHRONICLES!!
I agree with you...its the best fantasy I've read EVER
THE REMNANT CHRONICLES SERIES IS MY FAVORITE SERIES EVER❤️
Have you by chance read Tamara Peirce's world's? They are truely amazing books and wonderful worlds
Thanks for the recs! So refreshing to see you not mention Sarah maas books
Okay, you pretty much named all of my favourite books except: The Demon Cycle by Peter V Brett, The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch and Danielle Jensen's series (name escaping me) that starts with A Stolen Songbird.
Lauren Maillet it's called the malediction trilogy and it's sooooo underrated
Gosh.. I'm so behind!! I need to read all this series.. ❤ great video Regan!! 👌👌👌👌
Throne of glass series is literally the best book series ever. Hands down !!!
Shakira Tortura same with me, along with The Hunger Games Trilogy!!
Short (-ish) answer: I'd say that the first two books are really good, but from there it goes downhill and turns into an poorly written and edited cringefest (a bit harsh maybe but no one I've talked to about it have denied the truth of my thoughts - although not always agreed)
Longer answer (spoiler-free):
It was first after the forth book that I became really annoyed by Maas' writing and during the fifth, it further compounded.
Flora Grapsa haha Pat himself said it is a better book than TNOTW. Pat really is his own worst critic. But yes the book is really good :)
I also love the kiss of deception series!! You are so right, it is underrated! So good
The dark prism is like warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson
Yaaay, I've been waiting for this video for a while. I've only read two of the series you've mentioned but they're on my all time favourites as well so I'll definetely give a try to the others.
Do you have the book 1 to 4 of The School For Good And Evil ?
Love this! I always know when watching your videos I'm going to find a few good books to add to my never ending TBR!! xx
My Fav Fantasy book besides Harry Potter must be.....all of them😩
lol basically me
Yes!!!! My all time favorite is The Name of the Wind!!
Why no love for the Riftwar, Serpentwar, Darkwar, Demonwar... or whatever should be the name of the saga by R.E.Feist?
Loved this video got some great ideas for future book please read the Inkheart trilogy it’s my personal favourite hope you like it 🙃
I would love to hear your opinion on HOW TO HANG A WITCH and it's sequel HAUNTING THE DEEP by: Adriana Mather.
Krista Culbertson Liveship Trilogy! It’s one of my favourite.
It's sci-fi, but has a very similar feel to the Farseer series: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorkosigan_Saga
Plus the Cordelia Naismith books that tell the mother's story.
Try Robin Hobb, JRR Tolkien, Guy Gavriel Kay.
Yasss! Robin Hobb my Ultimate Bias author!
I AM SO GLAD U PUT The Name of the Wind IN THNX FOR THAT
I love SO MANY of these books or really want to read them when they're finished.
