Lol yup. Me too. I do like the pretty bookshelves but I never do it. Sometimes I have it roughly ordered by size and genre, but never very strictly. I did try rainbow once, but it made it super hard to find anything.

That's almost exactly the same way I did mine when I was in my teens. 😊 My best advice as someone now in their late 30s is to just do it your way. As long as you can find the book you want when you want it, then your system works.
I'm a teenager too, so I have a small 3×3 shelf in my room for my favorite books/books that are perfect for my age and reading level. I have a shelf for spiritual or biblical books. I have a shelf for my "Dork Diaries" series(please don't judge me for having that series at the age of 13) and my other small series( Diary of a Wimpy Kid). Everything else is all over the place. I also have a ginormous double-sided shelf in the den for other books or books that I share with my brother.
I currently have my books organised by genre and then alphabetically within each genre, but it’s SO hard to keep up. I really love having them by genre though, so I think I’m going to keep it like that but then just organise them by what looks nice within each genre rather than alphabetically.
"by genre and then alphabetically within each genre", like a civilized person! (sorry! I studied library sciences in high school and your comment warmed my heart! I think I'm the only one who keeps my shelves like that!)
my turned around books received fairly good comments! i think as long as you know where things are (you start to memorize the place of things over time anyway) it works just fine. i wish i had room for accessories! i was literally thinking “she should do read books by color with accessories” so glad that was the end product!
samee my dads always buying books for me and my sister, so he buys us a book we are currently reading and we have one unread on standby. That way once we finish the first we can start the other one while waiting for our next book to arrive... that prob makes not sense but works for us :)
wow that is a lot of work haha. i have never reorganized mine and right now they are sort of by genre and then size (hard vs paperback). and i have one cube that's unread.
I organise maybe mostly by 'feel'. Authors books go together and things like Penguin Modern Classics go together but the rest group up wherever feels right. Usually that means there'll be a group of poetry and references and a group of historical fiction but the rest go where they want to without any reasoning at all
I love a stylized bookshelf. It's by far the most aesthetically pleasing, and since you're bookshelves are in a living space, I *love* that that's where you ended up. Organizationally, my favorite is by genre. But it's definitely hard to make that look as nice. :)
You did everything but display the books. For example you could have had some of the books facing foward to display a pretty cover. Kinda like they do in the bookstore. Facing the books forward also allows you to store similar books by the same author together and save space. I don't know whatever sprinkles your donuts.
My shelves are organized using multiple criteria, based mostly on the shelves being functional rather than stylish. I can't really call it organized, more like grouped based on how my own brain knows them. Most of my books are organized by size because I have different-sized bookcases. My large textbooks and encyclopedias are on my heavy duty shelf, organized roughly by subject. My smaller hardcovers-and softcovers are organized mostly by size to fit the shelf and look steamlined, but if I have a large collection of a certain tyoe of book those will go next to each other. All my Shakespeare is together regardless of genre, all my Greek plays are together regardless of author, all my philosophy is together regardless of size. I do have 20 of my favorites all together, and I do love making one shelf entirely out of already read books. And of course I have knickknacks interplaced.
It’s really surprising to hear that alphabetized isn’t functional. Any particular reason why that is? Is it just too hard to remember author last names for certain books?
ęlectra heart Once you put all your existing books in the right order, it's actually quite easy to maintain. Every book has its place... Take a book out, read it, put it back in the gap. Easy.
I have my shelves sorted in alphabetical order, but I also put my unread books in separate shelves. So when I have read them, and need to put them in their proper place, it can be a bit of a process of moving books to new shelves to fit it in. If a author has the last name that starts with 'A', you have to move books with author last names starting with b - z. Otherwise, I think it's 100% functional.
I would not have the patience to reorganize my bookshelves 8 times! Wow! I really liked the end result, though 😊 Personally, I like having mine separated by genre (SFF, Classic Lit, YA, and then a kind of literary fiction/memoir mix) and then alphabetized. I don't differentiate between read or unread at all! Though I have thought about it.
This was an awesome video! Thanks! I honestly didn't think I would like the books flipped around in the end, but it turned out looking amazing, and honestly, a little more mature and guest friendly considering it's in your living room. Thanks so much for all of the gorgeous ideas, I look forward to seeing more from you!
I have an organization method that works for me but other people might find weird too. I have a small shelf like the one you have all the way to the left that has all of my favorite books. The top two shelves are one author each because I have so many by them (Rick Riordan and John Flanagan), then three or four authored series I love, then stand-alones. I keep all of my journals and inspiration books and things of that nature on top of my favorites shelf. Then I have another big bookshelf that holds all of my other books. The top shelves are all the books I've read and the bottom ones are my TBR. From there, I just put them how I think looks best, which is a combination of organizing by color, height, and genre.
By far, this was the best video I’ve watched on organizing a bookshelf. Thank you so much! Most of these videos have either no books or just a few books on the shelves, which baffles me. BOOKshelves should have books!
To me by genre is the best, also the most beautiful because I like my bookshelves to look "messy" as someone who really like to read, not so much organize lol
Wow a lot of work went into this video. So far it has given me the ideas with the smallest amount of books with the tiniest of bookshelves. I've now settles with a combination of Genre, Big to Small and Stylised. I'm happy with the results.
I think this whole video is incredible, it is creative and thoughtful. Thank you for taking the time to film this and thank your husband for for his patience. I love the final product but honestly i have no preference other than keeping series together so rainbow shelves are a no for me.
I kinda liked how it looked with the genres separated. It's a good way to keep track of what you have and determine if you like books in that genre or if you have different tastes. Keeping series together by genre would also make it easier.
Alphabetical by genre is how I organize my books, with some stylized touches mixed in. I also keep all my tiny books together on a small shelf, those that are about 6" or smaller. I really like how you got the big letters for the alphabetized version! Another option is to sort by book title. The reason I organize alphabetical by genre is that I read mostly nonfiction, so I like to see all the author's books stacked together. This also helps reduce the chance of buying a book I already have. What a chore to keep moving around all those books! Thank you for taking the time to share all the ideas!
god, all of your creative content is my absolute favorite thing. your ideas and videos are just THE BEST 💜 also, I'm not sure whether or not I could handle backwards books on my shelves, but man, I LOOOOVE how yours turned out! SO beautiful and interesting and pleasing to the eye. I just want to sit on the floor in your living room and stare at your shelves aajjfjsgf 😂 thanks for another wonderful video! 💖💕
wow i love all the effort you put on this. I get it must be a little tired but also very funny! i wouldn't know, i just have like thrirty something books, so i can't have much fun with the organization (totally loved the stylized, gonna have them like that someday)
This is 2024, I Loved this video! I just moved and decided before I put my books on the shelf’s just to take a peek around and see how others do it or might do it. You really did a great video you and your husband.👍🏼💖
i love antique library aesthetic for bookshelves but i wanted to find a new way to organizing my books instead of like you said "edge to edge". i completely enjoyed watching you organize and reorganize those shelves it was so entertaining and i love that you found what makes you the happiest. love the end results!
I know this is an older video, but I saw another booktuber organize some of her books by year and I thought that was a fascinating idea! Not sure if you've tried that. Personally, I mostly have mine split into "genre" and a section of books that are read (I have a lot less books). I keep all of my Japanese books in a separate section to spark my joy
I think there is no wrong answer 🤓 they are all beautiful! My collection isn't as big as yours, I tend to only keep four and five star books, if I didn't love it I pass it along for someone else to enjoy. But I have one rainbow shelf for joy, and I keep all my series together on the top shelf, and a handful of TBR on another shelf. It works for now, but always fun to play around with organizing books!
This is possibly the most useful UA-cam video I have seen, because I know I don't want to do this at home but I was curious how it would look. I spent four hours 2 weeks ago doing my own shelves and DID NOT want to rearrange them- now I dont have to. thanks to you I know what I like now!
My favourite is colour Part 2. I wish I could do my shelves like that but I find it hard to find a book I am looking for. I have to do mine by authors last name.
We are building new book shelves so this video was so timely and gave me great ideas! I love the accessories breaking up huge chunks of books, but I also love the rainbow color, so I think I'll try combining both methods and see what I come up with. I also agree that TBR should be separated from read books. I love that your TBR is so sizable! So is mine! 😍
My books are alphabetized (by author's last name) so all the series are together, except for the ones I haven't read yet, but that motivates me to pick them up sooner so I can complete the series on the shelves!
i used to do by size but now i have the alphabetized. i prefer this one because it looks nice aesthetically and is pleasing to my brain. a huge pain in the ass to organize though. evertime i get a new one i have to move em around. i also have some books hidden under my bed now because there like series i used to read when i was little and/or they were to ugly to keep in the shelf. Plus it saves space because i do stil enjoy having trinckets in there. Anyways its late around her so i´ve you´ve read this all have a good sleep/day

I also have a ginormous double-sided shelf in the den for other books or books that I share with my brother.
FBI I would love to see a photo of your shelves 😍
The effort that you put into this video, I’m subscribing!
I think I'm the only one who keeps my shelves like that!)
vivian wolkoff haha thank you! (I’m flattered😂)
Right now I do genre and then my favorites within that genre first, kind of like the rating one she did.
ImagesonthePage Ahh omg I love that! I think I’m going to try that next
Helena x 😀
That last one looks sooo cute!!!
my turned around books received fairly good comments! i think as long as you know where things are (you start to memorize the place of things over time anyway) it works just fine. i wish i had room for accessories! i was literally thinking “she should do read books by color with accessories” so glad that was the end product!
I just put my books on the shelf-
yeah same sis
You're pic goes along with this so well lmao
The profile picture goes so well with the comment!
Lol!
Not ONE of my books is unread😂 I just buy a book and read it in a instant.
Super cool. I'm glad the world can have all different preferences and still respect each other's way of doing things ☺️
Same, I prefer to buy books as I need them. About 4 a month
same, and i don't buy books that often so yeah lol they are all read on my shelf (i own like 15 books in total)
I could never. My TBR list is so fucking big and i have no time to read everything that i want to.
samee my dads always buying books for me and my sister, so he buys us a book we are currently reading and we have one unread on standby. That way once we finish the first we can start the other one while waiting for our next book to arrive... that prob makes not sense but works for us :)
wow that is a lot of work haha. i have never reorganized mine and right now they are sort of by genre and then size (hard vs paperback). and i have one cube that's unread.
I like the read and unread one but I had a thought, what if you color coordinated each of them separately??
KASSIE agree
YES
I organise maybe mostly by 'feel'. Authors books go together and things like Penguin Modern Classics go together but the rest group up wherever feels right. Usually that means there'll be a group of poetry and references and a group of historical fiction but the rest go where they want to without any reasoning at all
Me too. My books are grouped how my brain thinks of them, but there is no uniform criteria.
I think the colour 2, alphabetized was my favourite.
The stylized too but I don't like the flipped around books...but it's beautiful, too.
I have watched this video so many times, it’s so relaxing 😌
Right now my books are organized by color. I realy enjoy the video it was so satisfying!
I like shelves.
Something about the organization is so soothing to my brain. Every book has a place to be. Lovely!
Omg that last one is actually kind of awesome
It’s really surprising to hear that alphabetized isn’t functional. Any particular reason why that is? Is it just too hard to remember author last names for certain books?
Chronicle V my thoughts exactly... Alphabetically seems like the only functional way to me!
It's hard to keep them that way
ęlectra heart Once you put all your existing books in the right order, it's actually quite easy to maintain. Every book has its place... Take a book out, read it, put it back in the gap. Easy.
Chronicle V you could also do it with instead of authors name the books name
I have my shelves sorted in alphabetical order, but I also put my unread books in separate shelves. So when I have read them, and need to put them in their proper place, it can be a bit of a process of moving books to new shelves to fit it in. If a author has the last name that starts with 'A', you have to move books with author last names starting with b - z. Otherwise, I think it's 100% functional.
I would not have the patience to reorganize my bookshelves 8 times! Wow! I really liked the end result, though 😊
Personally, I like having mine separated by genre (SFF, Classic Lit, YA, and then a kind of literary fiction/memoir mix) and then alphabetized.
Everytime I don't know how to organize my shelfs anymore I watch this video. It's super helpful and inspiring.
Ooh. I’m assuming you've read Ranger's Apprentice?
Stylized bookshelves are for sure my favourite one to look at, even tho organizing by genre (without having to divide series) is the most useful one.
The way I organize them it’s a mix of the 7
The dedication that went through in this video. 👏
By far, this was the best video I’ve watched on organizing a bookshelf. Thank you so much! Most of these videos have either no books or just a few books on the shelves, which baffles me. BOOKshelves should have books!
I love how you ended, the stylized version is my favorite
To me by genre is the best, also the most beautiful because I like my bookshelves to look "messy" as someone who really like to read, not so much organize lol
Lucía Frau
I organize by type of book which I guess is similar to genre.
Nope, I'd have to see the spine/title. I'm glad you like it though.
By colour pt.2 is the best, hands down. ITS SO SATISFYING!!!!!
I love the final product but honestly i have no preference other than keeping series together so rainbow shelves are a no for me.
omg right? he's such a good person to put up with my bookish insanity.
I were liking this until the bookflipping started. :(
I can't bring myself to organise my books any other way than alphabetically 😂😂
I have mine organized by series and favorites
god, all of your creative content is my absolute favorite thing. your ideas and videos are just THE BEST 💜 also, I'm not sure whether or not I could handle backwards books on my shelves, but man, I LOOOOVE how yours turned out! SO beautiful and interesting and pleasing to the eye. I just want to sit on the floor in your living room and stare at your shelves aajjfjsgf 😂 thanks for another wonderful video! 💖💕
thank you thank you thank you! you're so kind ♥♥
wow i love all the effort you put on this. I get it must be a little tired but also very funny! i wouldn't know, i just have like thrirty something books, so i can't have much fun with the organization
(totally loved the stylized, gonna have them like that someday)
Mine are sorted alphabetically by author's last name and within that chronologically.
Same. If the author has multiple series, I order them by which series started first, even if the release dates within the series overlap
Same.
While the end result was, admittedly, very nice, I still prefer the wall stacked full of books. Just found ur channel! Great vid!
I like the alphabet one the best. But book shelves are always changing so have fun with it.
Wow nice shelf!! 📘💕
You're book collection is #goals
This is possibly the most useful UA-cam video I have seen, because I know I don't want to do this at home but I was curious how it would look. I spent four hours 2 weeks ago doing my own shelves and DID NOT want to rearrange them- now I dont have to. thanks to you I know what I like now!
Thank you for the amount of work you put into this!!
Ahhh I love videos like this 💕💕
Hear me out. Making your own book sleeves in a colour that complements your room theme.
My favourite is colour Part 2. I wish I could do my shelves like that but I find it hard to find a book I am looking for. I have to do mine by authors last name.
I have my series books seperated from my stand alones and then my standalones are organized by size, which I LOVE the look of
We are building new book shelves so this video was so timely and gave me great ideas! I love the accessories breaking up huge chunks of books, but I also love the rainbow color, so I think I'll try combining both methods and see what I come up with. I also agree that TBR should be separated from read books. I love that your TBR is so sizable! So is mine! 😍
I'm the crazy person that would the the stylized mixed with alphabetized, genre, and read/unread...
Aubrey Sida how the hell?😂
I’m crazy like that too....
Same
I organize my books by firstly by read and unread, then colour, then alphabetically
Alphabetically, that's how I do it. Maybe you can have all of the read and unread books alphabetically.
My books are alphabetized (by author's last name) so all the series are together, except for the ones I haven't read yet, but that motivates me to pick them up sooner so I can complete the series on the shelves!
Lauren Hannah that's what makes sense to me.
MsAmandaLynn it's just the way that I'm used to having it.
I always tried to organize my books by genre and then within the genre by author but my problem is that I'm never sure which book is which genre.
I love the way it turned out but the diagonal rainbow was my very favorite! Beautiful and creative!
i used to do by size but now i have the alphabetized. i prefer this one because it looks nice aesthetically and is pleasing to my brain. a huge pain in the ass to organize though. evertime i get a new one i have to move em around. i also have some books hidden under my bed now because there like series i used to read when i was little and/or they were to ugly to keep in the shelf. Plus it saves space because i do stil enjoy having trinckets in there. Anyways its late around her so i´ve you´ve read this all have a good sleep/day
