Good video so far but nobody calls D&D 3.5. 3.5 was... still D&D. Just an updated version of their popular 3rd edition. When 4th edition came out many people didn't like the changes and Paizo made a 3.5 compatible gaming system that for quite a while was more popular than actual D&D and it became something of a spiritual sucessor. Some (but not many) people call Pathfinder D&D 3.75
@@beezusHrist Not really, no. There are no Dual Classing, THAC0 or rolls for stats, BG also has an extremelly simplified featless and skilless (except for Rogue and Ranger and even then it was simplified) system, also no subraces at all in either, it is closer to NWN or (even more close) NWN2, since NWN was based on 3.0 and NWN2 in 3.5. Closer was Temple of Elemental Evil since it was as faithful to 3.0 as Kingmaker was but almost nobody played that beautiful buggy gem anyway. But no, if you come from BG you are going to lost as a pinguin in the Sahara, never understood why people keep misinforming other people on this, only things in common are that both are isometric party fantasy RPG's and the Kits/Subclasses.

Thank you for calling the turn based mode "the tabletop experience". So many reviewers and commentators are calling it "easy mode" or "good for beginners".
Interestingly, the similarity of the tactical mode to Heroes of Might and Magic stems from the fact that Owlcat's development leads come from Nival Interactive, where they worked on HoMM5.
If I'm no wrong, the developers themselves said they had heavily inspired the tactical mode from Heroes of Might and Magic and wanted to bring their version in the game.

I never played the first one, so this helps a lot. I especially like he covered turned base combat. Which is what I prefer. As much as I like BG games, I feel like turned based works better with complex rulesets. Pillars of Eternity 2 introduced a turned based mode which improved the combat in that game imho (though it obviously slows the game down and the game wasn't designed with turned based in mind), I just wish the main quest wasn't so annoying in that game. aye! you got your early copy!? nice!!! waiting for this to drop tommorow, might give this a shot. never played kingmaker tho btw, looks like character creation alone will take hours, if not days lol
I used to play pathfinder back before 2.0. Wrath was pretty fun it’s good to see all the character creation made it in. Wonder if the fighter archer is still OP as hell lol.
I struggled with the druid class in the first game and ended up going with a Sacred Huntmaster instead. I am thinking about trying out a Sylvan Sorcerer this time around for the pet, spells, etc. and we'll see how that goes. Cheers! H
I don't think Druid fits in this environment where you're fighting demons left and right. But then Druid is a strong class to pick if you know the system and how to build the class.
Looks really good can't wait to get into this game. Decided to start playing kingmaker right now I am about 20hrs in and so far big learning curve but really enjoying the game and I did choose to play with turn base.
I am super stoked for this game! I can't decide if I want it for PC or wait & get it for Xbox! I might actually have an Xbox Series X by then, LOL! Great Vid Bro as always! Much luv WolfheartFPS, HUGS!
Started Kingmaker three days ago and after beating Stag Lord I gotta say that I like it mroe than every new wave cRPG I have played (PoE 1 and 2, Original sin 2 and Tyranny). I just feel like on an adevanture here, I really feel that my decisions matter and need to use everything I can to beat some tougher enemies even when I play on normal. Just wonder if I need to start anew as my ranged characters suck ass ;p
mythic feats help ranged characters A TON, cleaving shot being a big one. Feels like less of an "adventure" and more a proper "epic" idk if that makes sense
The first rounds of risky fights, turn-base is great to properly do buffs that use a *Swift* action, to a Move action without moving too far so as to lose your Standard action, etc. Or do to a 5-Foot Step and then do a Full-Round Action (like multiple attacks). When you feel you control the situation, jump into real time and mop the floor!
For a guy i don't typically associate with game reviews this was an excellent in depth opinion on this game. All points covered that i wanted to know about before buying. I'd watch more of these reviews
Good work! ♥️ Bought the game and really hyped for tomorrow! Loved pathfinder kingdom and this looks even better with army battle, mythic patch and sooooo much choices! 😀🤪🤩
Man... WH just keeps coming in clutch surg the rpg games I want to play lol. Just downloaded this game. Lo and behold when I go looking for content on it, I'm already subscribed to someone who thoroughly covered it😭
Great Video man!!!. I gave Kingmaker a whirl on ps4 a while back (before I got a PC) and kinda fell out of love for its over complex approach but, I think that may be more of a difficulty issue with playing it on Console. PC looks way easier and a good fit for CRPG games in my opinion. This game looks really good however hard for me to abandon some other games I'm into in the CRPG realm. This will eventually make it into my library for sure though. Excited to try it on PC
If I'm not mistaken the lich mythic path actually brings 4 extra companions, 3 raised bosses and the skeletal champion, they don't bring much story-wise but they cover other archetype/flavor without having to full respec through mods etc The main issue right now is the crusade management that just doesn't work for me (some kind of bad HOMM and require some polish to be enjoyable) anyway it can be completely skipped but I haven't tried being still on my first run (with 40h of gameplay and haven't finished act2 yet)
Solid review, thank you! btw I think you meant "tactical" every time you said "tactile." Tactile means something completely different and doesn't describe the tactical combat mode at all. Just letting you know.
Great review, looking forward to the game. Already played Kingmaker, but didn't like the kingdom management and the time limits. Hope this game will be a better experience.
Thanks for providing a well-rounded review. I agree pretty much with all of your observations. It would be interesting to know your opinion of the story told by the game. But that can probably wait. One more comment: "tactical" not "tactile". 😅
Thanks so much for the great review! I really enjoyed the first Pathfinder game, and this one actually looks pretty similar with regard to the core gameplay (army mode notwithstanding). I didn't hear you mention any significant bugs, which is great, since the first one had several at release. Since this game looks so similar graphics-wise, I'm guessing they used the same engine? If so, they were likely able to build upon their previous knowledge and prevent making some of the same mistakes (reg. bugs) that were made in the first game. It does take quite a bit of time and reading faqs/guides/etc on the net to really understand the game's mechanics, mainly when it comes to building characters that can hold their own in difficulties above easy, but IMHO it was definitely worth my time and the first game was a lot of fun to play. Looking forward to picking this one up on Steam tomorrow! Cheers!! H
Excellent review pretty much hit all of the important points without spoiling anything and really just doing a good job of helping someone decide if this would be their type of game or not.
The reason why WotR has their crusader mode (similarly with Kingmakers kingdom management) is because those were aspects of paizo's specific adventure paths that these games were based off of. They even have a pirate themed one called "skull and shackles". That being said most of their adventure paths are more like your more typical campaign. As much as I love what Owlcat has done so far, I'm skeptical of their pathfinder games moving forward because none of the other paths incorporate mythic like in wrath. So their next games may feel a bit lackluster. I hope I'm wrong, but we'll see.
I just want to throw out that if you're like me and Alt+Tab frequently to check things in other tabs you may impact cutscenes, causing text bubbles to not appear or causing the cutscene camera to bug out.
I put a lot of trust in your reviews, Wolf, and will definitely be picking this game up within the next two months. So many games to play!!!! Cheers, Wolf.
@@WolfheartFPS Thanks for the review. As it was not mentioned in the review, is it safe to say that you encountered relatively few bugs in your playthrough so far? One of my primary concerns about the development of this game was if it would be as buggy as kingmaker was when it released.
Review is very good my man, lots of detail which I appreciate. Been here since around Outward and it's nice to see your channel grow :) Hopefully you'll hit 100k soon! Also question, do you have or are you going to do a playthrough of this? I did a quick search but didn't see one on YT, maybe on Twitch?
ok i really want to try out this game but the only experience in RPG that i have is playing FFXIV and that's a mmorpg, and it's completely different .That's why i am trying to learn the basics before i buy the game. but i can't find a actual beginner guide either it is a review or just a vague short video. This video helped me more the those beginner videos
Not enough time to enjoy games like this anymore with one kid and one on the way and full time job and trying to workout and with that said.. I’ll still buy it and build new characters to play for a weekend every now and then 🤷♂️
Great review. Very informative. Since you said there is a lot of reading in the game, I was wondering how large the font was? Or if the font size is adjustable? I’m fine with reading in the game as long as the devs don’t make everything so tiny I get eye strain. Adjustable font size is a wonderful accessibility option that I wish more games would include.
Cool video, I was debating myself whether or not to buy it, you gave me quite a few arguments for the pro-side, thanks. On a side note, Pathfinder 1E could be considered more like D&D 3.75, as it removed/fixed a number of flaws (according to players, myself included) in the actual D&D 3.5.
Very interesting CRPG. I especially like the inventory management system (I'm a "hoover" so need lots of space). Maybe I missed it, but does the game allow you to switch out weapon loadouts? As always, great video Wolf!
Yes, you can have 4 load-outs per character. But it's literally like equipping all that gear on that one chacter, so have to keep the weight/encumbrance in mind.
One thing that I would like to know about the game is about the AI of enemies in battles. Do evil groups of enemies use clever strategies (positioning, use of covering, clever use of abilities etc) or they are just mindless mobs?
there is no covers in game, and positioning mostly means...nothing. Enemies prefer to attack first character from party they see, and will continue, unless he is too tanky, and they will miss any attack in 3 rounds. But some tend to attack back rows instead, and use charge, that you will try to avoid at any cost. Some enemy encounters are just hidden under invisibility, and you literally bump into them in most unvanted position. Some enemies are buffed before fights, so they will not waste time on casting defence spels and just hit you hard with what remained in their spellbooks, some will start buffing themselves in first rounds anyway. Overall..average mindlessness compensated by strong buffed enemy bosses.
What I need to know is how is the Party AI? In Kingmaker if you turn on the AI for your party, which I'd prefer, all they do is melee whatever is closest never using their skills.
The Owlcat resting system is by far my favorite resting system for any CRPG I've played. Most of the time, in video games, I can just cheese mechanics and ignore quests that seem urgent until I've optimized everything else, and that quest that seemed urgent is still waiting for me, even dozens of hours of gameplay later. In these Owlcat games, there are consequences for how you spend your time, but I like that I never have to feel like I'm in a rush to make decisions quickly. My character does, but I don't.
@@WolfheartFPS I think if there was one improvement that Pathfinder: Kingmaker could have made, it would have been to set players’ expectations early on that experiencing 100% of the game’s content with only one play-through is impossible and then follow through with it. Instead, if I recall correctly, you could actually complete all of the quests if you optimized your time well enough.
Agreed. I am with you on it. Resting system feels truly unique and has got much more impact on playthrough than any other RPG game, best in whole genre imo . I am glad that in WotR resting system stayed almost untouched , slightly improved and was added nice feature for resting in unsafe zones. Great move from Owlcat.
great review, but just a friendly suggestion: when recording your videos or overlapping the sound on it, please do so with higher volume. I live in a noisy neighborhood and I can barely here you even when I max Volume my laptop. Keep up the good work.
I love Kingmaker as it is now, but it's worth noting that it was a buggy mess at launch. Cannot stress enough how buggy; there were multiple bugs in the main quest line that made it unfinishable for every player. IIRC it was about a month before it was patched to the point where I could actually complete the game. I did a second playthrough several months after release and some of the sidequests (notably the artisan quests) were still broken. I believe it was about a year before all the quests were actually completable. Looking forward to your post-launch review of the game because I wish I had waited until the major bugs were patched before my first playthrough of Kingmaker.
I really like being able to switch to turn base when I need some more tactical planning for difficult situation then switch back to real time to watch my character destroy all the weak mobs

I cannot wait to dive into the game myself tomorrow and go with a Cavalier build (still undecided between Fearless Leader/Beast Rider and Gendarme).
aye! you got your early copy!? nice!!! waiting for this to drop tommorow, might give this a shot. never played kingmaker tho
btw, looks like character creation alone will take hours, if not days lol
Enjoy
I used to play pathfinder back before 2.0. Wrath was pretty fun it’s good to see all the character creation made it in. Wonder if the fighter archer is still OP as hell lol.
kingmaker was really hard to follow, but I think I’ll give this series another try. Druid anyone? 🌳
You might have more fun with Hunter. Better synergy between animal and owner.
I love druid. Kinda on the fence for going this route tough, feel it's kinda weird in the whole crusade setting.
Definitely playing this and can’t wait to see your playthrough of it, awesome video once again 👍🏾😁
Thanks as always Silver. Enjoy!
Great comprehensive review. Thanks for the video.
Your reviews are always fair, well expressed, concise, illustrated by appropriate game content and with no spoilers. Excellent work; thank you.
Thanks much for the comment!
Great work, your videos are always so good!
I'm gonna need to check this game out!
I’ve only got exp with dos2.. so looks like I’ll be picking up kingmakers thanks to you :)
mythic feats help ranged characters A TON, cleaving shot being a big one. Feels like less of an "adventure" and more a proper "epic" idk if that makes sense
Aww, granma. :D
Thanks Paul. I'll be sure to do more in this style.
Good work! ♥️
Bought the game and really hyped for tomorrow! Loved pathfinder kingdom and this looks even better with army battle, mythic patch and sooooo much choices!
😀🤪🤩
so much to do!!
Man... WH just keeps coming in clutch surg the rpg games I want to play lol. Just downloaded this game. Lo and behold when I go looking for content on it, I'm already subscribed to someone who thoroughly covered it😭
Really good and in depth review, thank you!
Thank you for early review. Beginners guide coming next I hope
If I'm not mistaken the lich mythic path actually brings 4 extra companions, 3 raised bosses and the skeletal champion, they don't bring much story-wise but they cover other archetype/flavor without having to full respec through mods etc
The main issue right now is the crusade management that just doesn't work for me (some kind of bad HOMM and require some polish to be enjoyable) anyway it can be completely skipped but I haven't tried being still on my first run (with 40h of gameplay and haven't finished act2 yet)
looks amazing got my preload already, character creation is going to be a beast trying to choose a class build.
yes yes it is lol
There's no bards or skalds in the default companions from what I can see, so looks like a good chance to play a support character.
@@TheRelen222 true but even then you have five subclasses each to choose from as well...
Solid review, thank you!
btw I think you meant "tactical" every time you said "tactile."
Tactile means something completely different and doesn't describe the tactical combat mode at all. Just letting you know.
Yea I screwed that one up. Thanks!
Great review, looking forward to the game. Already played Kingmaker, but didn't like the kingdom management and the time limits. Hope this game will be a better experience.
Just finished after 237 hs and i can say that is my fav CRPG with Pillars 2.
Phenomenal game and great review!
thank you for your review! im really considering getting this game now once i finish my first playthrough of divinity 2
Thanks for providing a well-rounded review. I agree pretty much with all of your observations. It would be interesting to know your opinion of the story told by the game. But that can probably wait. One more comment: "tactical" not "tactile". 😅
Thanks Bill!
Cheers!!
H
Appreciate you watching
Looks cool Wolf, thanks for the video!
Excellent review pretty much hit all of the important points without spoiling anything and really just doing a good job of helping someone decide if this would be their type of game or not.
Thanks for watching
Thanks for backing the game early and helping it come to exist for us.
I put a lot of trust in your reviews, Wolf, and will definitely be picking this game up within the next two months. So many games to play!!!! Cheers, Wolf.
Thanks John. There are many haha
Is there a stream tonight?
Thanks for the thorough review Wolf!
D&D 3.5 is an actual edition. A lot of the people I have run into call pathfinder "Fixed 3.5". Thanks for the review, was pretty helpful.
Thanks for the correction!
I have always called it 3.5+ or "Better 3.5 with 10 times the content."
@@WolfheartFPS Thanks for the review. As it was not mentioned in the review, is it safe to say that you encountered relatively few bugs in your playthrough so far? One of my primary concerns about the development of this game was if it would be as buggy as kingmaker was when it released.
*Good informative video* even for noobs like me 👍🏾😊
CRPG = Combat RolePlaying Game?
Hey Mustang. Thanks for sticking around for so long. I miss the Outward days :-D
@@WolfheartFPS Thanks for responding so fast :) Yea I hope they make an Outward 2 with a larger budget, it'd be awesome!
will you be doing a playthrough on stream? id watch for sure
Yes I will be, starting tomorrow!
@@WolfheartFPS can't wait man, looking forward to it !!! Great review video btw, excellent work
ok i really want to try out this game but the only experience in RPG that i have is playing FFXIV and that's a mmorpg, and it's completely different .That's why i am trying to learn the basics before i buy the game. but i can't find a actual beginner guide either it is a review or just a vague short video. This video helped me more the those beginner videos
Not enough time to enjoy games like this anymore with one kid and one on the way and full time job and trying to workout and with that said.. I’ll still buy it and build new characters to play for a weekend every now and then 🤷♂️
You could spend time with your kid playing games a win win scenario. Don’t take advice for granted not a dad. Good luck.
I actually took 2 weeks annual leave for this lol
Upside you have kids better than any video game
Great review. Very informative. Since you said there is a lot of reading in the game, I was wondering how large the font was? Or if the font size is adjustable? I’m fine with reading in the game as long as the devs don’t make everything so tiny I get eye strain. Adjustable font size is a wonderful accessibility option that I wish more games would include.
This game looks like it’s exactly what I want when I want it. What good timing! Lol
You want unfinished shit with tons of bugs? Glad for ya mate!
@@Dz77777Dz unfinished how?
@@da-p6814 Bugs, broken quests, a lot of broken things like builds/ skills
@@Dz77777Dz ah. I'll wait for some patches then

I'm pretty interested. I avoided Kingmaker because of many of the frustrations I read about but it sounds like this one has addressed a lot of them.
i think it looks awesome. Love the idea of mythic paths. Thanks for the content, Wolf.
Took Friday off of work to get a head start gaming all weekend between my softball tournaments!
Good luck in your tournament bro!
Stoked for this, huge fan of Kingmaker.
The resting system where you can craft reminded me of Expedition: Viking
That was a very good game. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This game I won't be playing because I am not a fan of Pathfinder.
Looks like a lot of fun, I'm still working through Kingmaker atm but this looks like a good follow up.
Very interesting CRPG. I especially like the inventory management system (I'm a "hoover" so need lots of space). Maybe I missed it, but does the game allow you to switch out weapon loadouts? As always, great video Wolf!
You get 4 of them :)
Yes, you can have 4 load-outs per character. But it's literally like equipping all that gear on that one chacter, so have to keep the weight/encumbrance in mind.
@@TwinsenR "Yeah but it go's to 11" Lol
More complete answer. Thank you
Yes you can shift weapons during combat.
@Chris Nelson, @Twinsen, and @jurgen ...thanks for the info!
Appreciate your content! WolfPack best Pack!
@@hirdbarding3399 Thank you very much. Much appreciated.
What I need to know is how is the Party AI? In Kingmaker if you turn on the AI for your party, which I'd prefer, all they do is melee whatever is closest never using their skills.
Very nice initial review.
Your name should be WolfheartRPG - digging the videos
Thanks!
It's refreshing to experience a system that has meaning behind it!
Great Review really covers all the points
great review, but just a friendly suggestion: when recording your videos or overlapping the sound on it, please do so with higher volume. I live in a noisy neighborhood and I can barely here you even when I max Volume my laptop. Keep up the good work.
Headphones?
Thanks for this Video!
enjoyed king maker so much, can't wait to spend hundred+ hours for this one.
Nice informative review, thanks!
Thanks for watching Chris
I really like being able to switch to turn base when I need some more tactical planning for difficult situation then switch back to real time to watch my character destroy all the weak mobs
definetly going to get this game, currently i am on my first kingmaker playthrough
