Someone has probably already commented this, but to get any wood to soak you just need to water log it :) You can either keep it in the tank, or just put it in a bucket or bath tub and leave it until it sinks. My driftwood usually takes 2-3 days to water log in a bucket. It'll also release a lot of tannins which will lower pH during the water logging process.
You probably should have washed the gravel and your going to need a program able filter to adjust for the seasons if you’re trying to make it as natural as possible
