Tip for starting your siphon. 1Submerge the whole thing in the tank and let the tube fill completely. 2. Cover the small end of the hose with your finger while still under water. 3. Keep the large end submerged and lift the small end out and into your bucket which is lower than your tank. 4. Release your finger from the small end. 5. Water will start flowing. 6. Never taste tank water again.
In high school one of my science teachers had a fresh water tank with bass, bream, catfish and the prettiest fish was a gar that was about 10" long. It was a beautiful tank. One day I'd like to make one myself.
Cole put the big end in the tank. Fold all the line around in the tank and submerge the small end until the bubbles stop . Hold your finger ☝️over the small end and drop the small end of the tube over the outside of the tank into a bucket or your cooler it will cause a vacuum and drain.... no suckin on the hose
Do you mind if I give you some advice about the siphon. If you will put the whole thing in the tank and let it fill full of water in the lines and put your thumb over the end and pull the tube out and Lowe’s your hand into your bucket. It will siphon it’s self. I learned that years ago after I got tired of getting a mouth full of fish poo. Lol. And please take the light off before you start scrubbing. I would hat to see an elbow hit the light and knock the light into the water. That scared me so bad.
One more thing -- bluegill can be a lot of fun to catch on a fly rod. They will tear up a spider fly -- basically a piece of sponge rubber with rubber bands for legs. If you don't fly fish, this is a great way to learn!
@@COLE_and_JAY then you already know what fun it can be! That could be an idea for a future video -- teach folks how to fly fish -- roll casting was always good for bluegills, especially if there was a lot of cover around (or people close by)
Nice new fancy intro, and you don't have to suck siphon to start that, just put your finger over the end of it and fill the big end w/water, release the air w/your finger, and drown the big end again, then put the hose down and it will go..even w/some air still in the hose. Also do some freshwater tanks here, have a couple bass and some sunfish, which I release every spring, then catch new ones in the fall.
Fun to do BUT watch the state F&G rules as to collecting & moving live fish. Usually permits required. Try a few Hornpout to keep the bottom clean. If you collect them at a few inches they will stunt & not grow to 12 or 24 inches ! Besides cat fish are cool..... LFOD !
I have experience cleaning tanks , for a thorough cleaning , drain 3/4 of the water into giant plastic containers.once it’s removed put fish in water . Take the tank outside and thoroughly clean rocks and sides .put old water back in the tank and use dechlorinate in water , wait for the tank to settle .Then put fish back in tank .Do not put predators fish of the bluegills and crappie in the tank .aka Bass .
I set up a freshwater tank for my aunt and put a catfish, two small bream and two tiny snapping turtles in it I`d go see her twice a week and bring the fish and turtles worms. She fed them fish flakes too. The turtles would go crazy when they saw me and I`d let them out of the tank for a little while. They`d swim to the top so I could get them. They were very friendly. I eventually let the turtles go back in a stream the next Spring.
When I was young it was illegal to keep native fish at home. Now we have all of the invasive aquarium fish in our waters. We have so many species of fish in our waters that are just a nice too look at as tropicals. Ever see a tank with pumpkinseed sunfish? Their colors are amazing!
When I was a kid, I started with tropical fish -- I did well with Jack Dempseys, several varieties of "barking" catfish, and African butterfly fish (also known as freshwater flying fish) and had a ball. By the time I was in high school, I was much more interested in local wildlife, including pond life. So I set up a 20-gallon tank with natural plants, freshwater shrimp, and a variety of tadpoles representing bullfrogs, leopard frogs, salamanders and toads -- all gathered from some ponds near my parents' home. Unfortunately, one of the plants I had chosen is called bladderwort, which has small air bladders that allow it to float on the surface. But, within a matter of days, the tadpoles began disappearing, and the bladderwort started to sink and its small air bladders turned black. It turns out that the bladders on the plant actually are small traps that, when triggered, suck in aquatic life. The plant actually had been "eating" the tadpoles. I removed the bladderwort and the remaining tadpoles matured. I released them, and then added a few bluegills to the aquarium. I eventually released those back into the wild as well, and finally abandoned the hobby when I went to college. It was an enjoyable and educational hobby, and I highly recommend it -- my interests turned more toward fishing and photography, and later writing, so I never returned to the aquarium activities, but my memories of the hobby are good. Thanks for posting the video -- it brought back some of my own treasured memories! You both ROCK!!
My whole life I have always been fascinated with the natural world around me and always created my own little ecosystems to watch and learn from. It has always been a very rewarding hobby. Can’t imagine not having aquariums in my home! Thank you for sharing. And thank you for watching!
You don't have to "suck" those drain hoses. Place the outflow where you want it to drain, put the big end into the water allow it to fill, them point the open end up and lift it up, water will rush quickly through the siphone so you need to get it submerged again quickly, the siphon will keep the water flow going.
One more -- this video reminded me of something else. The Fox River , which runs through my hometown of Elgin, Illinois, was a polluted, virtually dead mess in the 1960s. But environmental efforts, both locally and nationally (Clean Water Act) worked a virtual transformation of this waterway. By the mid- to late 1970s, a friend of my Dad's had set up several freshwater aquariums to showcase some of the fishing making a comeback in the river. He had crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, a walleye, and I think a small pike or muskie as well. He was an early environmentalist, I guess, and he used the aquariums to demonstrate to local and county officials, as well as members of the public, that the fight to save the Fox River was working -- because he had caught all of the fish in his aquariums from the river. I think some speculated he might get into trouble for keeping the game fish, but his project was pretty cool AND demonstrated that local environmental efforts were paying off. I'll stop posting comments on this video now -- but you really, really brought back some great memories for me. Thanks, as always!
You need a baby smallmouth, largemouth and catfish! Get to catching! Try a local bait store minnow tank. It’ll be kind of like rescuing a pet from a shelter lol. Might make for a good video idea. Good luck.
Awsome Tank! I used to do the same thing many years ago. My favorite was baby black catfish and crawdads. Plenty of minnows and natural aquatic bugs that the fish can live on. I caught them with little nets. I also tried to incorporate live plants when i could. It became an obsession for a while. Y'all do great videos and make every one of them interesting and we really appreciate all that you do! So a big Thanks from your UA-cam followers!
Next time you change the water in your fish tank use the same garden hose. Put the hose into the tank just like when you were filling it, turn on hose for a few seconds then disconnect the hose from the spigot and it will cause a siphon. No more humping buckets and coolers full of water out the front door. Also rubber band or zip tie some screening around the tip of the hose in the tank so it cant suck up the rocks. Bass are a lot of fun by the way to keep and hand feed nightcrawlers to. They use to love to go after my wifes brightly painted finger nails too! Have fun! Love your show!
They make siphons you don’t have to suck on, and if you go to a Menards or something you can get a really long hose so you don’t have to deal with buckets :) and please cycle the tank before adding fish, believe it or not all the gross stuff you took out while cleaning was healthy for the tank
But u didnt use water conditioner or let the water cycle when u pit them in they went into shock becouse you didnt temperature aqulamate and the smaller half filled tank is way over stalked
i am trying to tell these ppl to do research and they don't even know about bacteria or stuff i want to do a native tank but it's stuff like this that makes me not want to plus its illegal in my state to possess bluegill or bass for anything other than food tho you can keep minnows i think so these ppl need to do more research and i completely agree with you
Can get a small water lilly plant piece with some roots on, clean it carefully, you will see the pretty colour of the stem in the tank's lighting! Plant it in one corner and the roots will spread under the gravel; the stem/s will grow up to top of water and small leaves will form. Mine had small leaves according to tank size! The wild plant had larger leaves! Flower/s may form according to light! Trim plant when overgrows! When I had too many small snails in tank, I crushed them between fingers underwater for extra fish food!
Use the hose as the siphon. Go outside below tank level, give it a good suck, and drain all the water directly into your garden. No more carrying sloshing buckets.
Cole, just fill the big end with water by submerging the whole tube under the water then turn the open end up toward the ceiling while raising the tube above the water line. The water will begin flowing through the tube then immediately submerge the big end into the tank (with the open end stilll up) all the air will leave the big end and water will continue to siphon! No mouth needed! If you don’t understand, let me know and I’ll make a video to show you how to do it! Big-D
Cole you crack me up. "Get to catching come on." Ohhhhhh. Little Granny. Inspired. Wait! How big are they going to get? Crazy Carol. You got jokes too. I see you Cole. Funny! Loved it! God bless.
The tank U put the crayfish in has fish in there way to big for that size tank! Each fish should have about a gallon per inch they are so if u have two fish that are 3 inches you need a minimum of 6 gallons of water. At the bare minimum. And that’s still not giving them enough space to thrive. So with fish that get as big as the ones u had u need a large tank
Cole and Jay i love your new fish and it do take a long time to clean a tank so i pay my nephew to do it.lol so keep the videos coming love yall.😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
That's how my 60 gallon has been set up forever. I like it. I've never been into pink or purple in an aquarium. I have a 10 inch Bullhead catfish in it.
Nice aquarium. I have an aquarium with bluegills too. I would get a small catfish to keep the bottom clean, plus they are cute. One non-native fish I recommend getting is an algae eater, like the Chinese Algae Eater. It’ll keep the tank clean of algae so between the catfish and algae eater, you won’t need to clean the tank hardly at all as you can maintain a good healthy environment.
I had a nice fish tank, a smaller one, years ago and now you're making me think about getting another one ! 😊 I put a couple of red ear shell crackers in mine, they were fun to watch. Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
I caught 7-10 of these around 15 years ago. I first put one in with a large Oscar to see what would happen standing by of course and the Oscar wanted out of the tank instantly so I took the bluegill out. The bluegill was probably a 3rd of the size of the Oscar. Most Oscars are not super aggressive though. Anyway I had them in their own tank for a few days but ended up letting them go back where I caught them. I fed them in the few days I had them minnows and they would grab them and rip them apart. All the other fish I had including a jaguar cichlid, red devil...very aggressive fish, they would just suck them up and chomp them but the bluegills were different and their movement was very beautiful to watch. They would just dart from one spot to another, very quick. I had a couple males though that had all the other ones in the corner while they just swam freely. Maybe you guys experience was longer lasting than mine
I think you should have some Creek Meadows in there I really think that make it real nice love y'all Channel what you all the time God bless you and keep it going
To make your clean up easier.... use your scruber sponge in corners along silicone seals and use razor blade on all your open glass while water is in tank. Clean your plants while still wet... the algae growth comes off better when wet than when dry. Not sure if youve ever had a tank cease on you because of condensation traped between the bottom tank glass and the surface you set the tank on.... my suggestion... put a lair of 2" styrofoam under the tank which extends about 2" outside of tank trim all the way around the tank. Or use store bought wood tank stands which are usually open surface instead of solid suface cabinets. Hope this helps.
I apologize I watched so many of your videos and enjoy watching your videos and I just now subscribed today. I didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed until I was researching how to set up a freshwater fish tank and you guys popped up.👍🎣
@@tylerkingaford4689 you still have to let the tank cycle for over a week, I set up a 55 galllon native tank and it’s been cycling for over a week but the nitrates are still high, it’s planted too. Check my newest video if you want to see it, not it’s final form.
We had bass in there previously and they were awesome. They require a lot of minnows lol we will probably add another to it though. We have a bass in our other aquarium!
I showed my brother your channel and now every time we talk to each other one of us always says, "Hey did you see Cole and Jay's new video?" 😂 We love you guys, keep up the good videos! ❤️ My brother is really into fishing and has invested like over 1000$ in lures/rods & reels... He also bought a 12 thousand dollar bass boat... And still doesn't catch half as much fish as you two do on the bank 😂 bless his heart Y'all catch more fish in winter Bank fishing than he does in spring on a boat lol if you can't tell I love teasing him about it 😂
My daughter, Lily, is also a big fan of you guys. She’s wanting me to ask if we could meet up with you guys possibly sometime and do a little creek fishing or snake catching? She loves the outdoors too, she is 9. Im working on building us a custom Jon boat. Maybe we could tow it over your way and all go fishing?
Always stared mine with small fish caught in a minnow trap then feed em little bitty minnows and crawfish out of the ditch then watch em grow bass bream & sacalait sometimes a catfish always real pretty good luck and keep videos coming GO TIGERS
I just set up an aquarium for my garage today. It's on top of a big Husky toolbox and I just caught two little sunfish from the local park pond using a dry fly on a Tenkara rod. I have a Pickerel in another aquarium I have and he's big enough for them to get along, but Idk about introducing them yet, even though they frequently come across each other in the wild. But nonetheless, I am excited to have two new friends to admire! 🤣
no i hit thumbs down cuz they didnt cycle their tank they put bluegill in a 75 gallon one fish needs 100 with i believe 10 gallons for each new one they moved a crawfish to a five gallon with fish in there crawfish need to be alone with at least 20 gallons of water so basically they are abusing animals even if they are fish they still deserve to be treated humanely PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING FISH CAN"T BE KEPT FOR FOOD I BELIEVE THEY CAN BE BECAUSE THAT SERVES A PURPOSE ABUSING ANIMALS FOR A VIDEO SERVES NO PURPOSE I AM ALSO NOT SAYING DON'T START A NATIVE TANK I AM GONNA DO THAT WITH MINNOWS WHAT I AM SAYING IS IF YOU ARE GONNA DO SOMETHING DO YOUR RESEARCH DO IT RIGHT
Nice video, I've figured it out, Cole catches more fish because Jay has to hold the 📷...did you notice all of the fish went to the right....weird...love ya guys
2 days ago I got a trout fish. Really it has 2 homes. A pond out side and a big fish tank. Most of the time the fish is in the pond and I still need to decorate it. Do you have any tips on how to decorate a fish tank like a woods. Or forest.
Oh yea, and my friend also put some aquatic fresh water (floating grass) it lived and grew fast.the minnows usually tried to hide up top in it when the bass caught them up top during a feeding frenzy!
How hard you think you need to set that hook for those little bluegill? Good god..calm down bud! 😂. ". When you take the saltwater angler fresh water fishin" 🤣🤣🤣
To not get water in your mouth u have the bucket it's going in or where is going out lower then the tank put water in the cup part raise it till it comes out other end out back in water till it makes a suction
Hi, question i was going to set up a tank like yours for the summer and return them in the fall but i read that fish kept in captivity could not be returned to the wild. They would not survive in the wild so i abandoned my tank idea. I was wondering what your thoughts are becuse you said you released your prior fish.
He must not know that he can shake the tube up and down in the tank and it will also fill. I wouldn’t dare let that nasty water get in my mouth. And little parasites that can’t be seen. Cane enter the belly ugh 😩
We got an aquarium in May and put bream and bass in it. A couple of weeks ago 2 of the bream got ick so we put a treatment in the water. In the last couple of days, the bass and a bream died. The other 2 bream aren’t doing good (red spots and aren’t eating). Have y’all ever had this kind of situation?
No, no, no. Don't suck up the water. dip suction tube under the surface to get all water out of it. then pinch hose, lower it into bucket, and open and it will now drain. Had a 50g for years, and found suction orally is bad, yuck.
If you feel the large part of the tube up with water and hold it higher than the small end of hose it will create a vacuum. Once it starts just submerge the large end in the tank and presto!
I love, love, love ur creek fish aquarium, my husband & I use to have several aquariums like this one, I love the all natural rocks ect. We also had not only blue gill but smal bass, small catfish they were so much fun to watch 😊
Hold the big end in the water with the opening pointing up.Let the big end fill up then Hold it up out of the water and let the water start draining into the tube. Right before all the water has drained out, quickly submerge the big end with the opening down. Siphon started without having to suck the nasty ass tube!!

A "BOOGIE WOOGIE" start!
Great video keep on putting your great yideos out
I think you should have some Creek Meadows in there I really think that make it real nice love y'all Channel what you all the time God bless you and keep it going
I didn’t realize I wasn’t subscribed until I was researching how to set up a freshwater fish tank and you guys popped up.👍🎣
What do you usually use when fishing for bluegill because they friggen love small jig jeads...seems to be all i catch when i use one haha
Tiny jigs and crickets lol
So do you care about the nitrogen cycle? Do you lose any fish to ammonia?
People like these two shouldn’t be allowed pets
U can add stuff to the water to deal with it
@@tylerkingaford4689 you still have to let the tank cycle for over a week, I set up a 55 galllon native tank and it’s been cycling for over a week but the nitrates are still high, it’s planted too. Check my newest video if you want to see it, not it’s final form.
I love no matter what y'all put on here. Love u both coletrain and j. Your amazing🦀🦂🐛🐊🐟🐠🦆
a cpl of small bass would be cool to see in there !
We had bass in there previously and they were awesome. They require a lot of minnows lol we will probably add another to it though. We have a bass in our other aquarium!
Acclimate in a bag in the tank so they don’t get shocked. That temperature differential is why they went nuts when they hit the water
Love the new intro! (Same as everyone else) and very cool aquarium! Looking forward to a lot of videos in. 2019.
Thank you! Hoping to make some good ones this year!
U should use the old fishtank water for watering flowers or gardens, the fish poo and food that doesn't get eaten is good for plants!
I showed my brother your channel and now every time we talk to each other one of us always says, "Hey did you see Cole and Jay's new video?" 😂 We love you guys, keep up the good videos! ❤️
My brother is really into fishing and has invested like over 1000$ in lures/rods & reels... He also bought a 12 thousand dollar bass boat... And still doesn't catch half as much fish as you two do on the bank 😂 bless his heart
Y'all catch more fish in winter Bank fishing than he does in spring on a boat lol if you can't tell I love teasing him about it 😂
Lol you're hilarious!
@@COLE_and_JAY Thanks 😂 I'm wondering which one of you two wrote this lol
Cole just push that siphon up and down kinda hard and the siphon will start automatically.
Thanks, I love the new intro. You guys are so good to watch 👍👍👍👍
You should probably research the nitrogen cycle for fish tanks. You destroyed your biological filter with cleaning the way you did
these ppl are really bad most of the time i say do research which is what i have been typing but these ppl should stop keeping fish FOREVER
I just started the video and he was describing how they were going to do a deep clean and Introduce fish right away! 😂
Awesome video. I’m supporting you guys trying to help you grow. Keep it up. You will succeed!
We appreciate it greatly!!!
Awesome! Pickerel are my favorite local fish in NY along with smallmouth bass
It's the Stonehenge aquarium, lol. Good job guys.
The one person that “down thumb” this video is jealous of that sweet setup!! Cool video, I kinda want a fish tank with native fish now. To be honest!
no i hit thumbs down cuz they didnt cycle their tank they put bluegill in a 75 gallon one fish needs 100 with i believe 10 gallons for each new one they moved a crawfish to a five gallon with fish in there crawfish need to be alone with at least 20 gallons of water
so basically they are abusing animals even if they are fish they still deserve to be treated humanely
PLEASE NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING FISH CAN"T BE KEPT FOR FOOD I BELIEVE THEY CAN BE BECAUSE THAT SERVES A PURPOSE
ABUSING ANIMALS FOR A VIDEO SERVES NO PURPOSE
I AM ALSO NOT SAYING DON'T START A NATIVE TANK I AM GONNA DO THAT WITH MINNOWS
WHAT I AM SAYING IS IF YOU ARE GONNA DO SOMETHING DO YOUR RESEARCH DO IT RIGHT
Looks like Stonehenge in a fish tank to me.
You guys should get a bullhead catfish for the tank!!
Thats amazing! Ive never seen someone suck the siphon before. Hopefully you figured it out by now. Great video!
Nice Fish Tank STOCKED.
I want to get a tank someday.
I don't think that I am allowed to do that here in MISSOURI.
GREAT VIDEO & keepem coming.
They calm down once they give up on life LOL
You should also use “stress coat” it aids in healing any injuries on the fish and also neutralizes chlorine in the water.
A small hand net should be used to take fish out of bucket and into tank!...
Good job. You just inspired me to possibly put together an aquarium stocked with local fish. Nice!👍🏻👍🏻
Do it!
You should buy a Python water siphon.
This was an awesome video! I love the aquarium!
Thank you so much!
You kids are going to love the aquarium....
Hey I met you two at the dealership last week and asked you about this! So thanks for doing this video!
You bet!!!
How hard you think you need to set that hook for those little bluegill? Good god..calm down bud! 😂. ". When you take the saltwater angler fresh water fishin" 🤣🤣🤣
I’m a freshwater angler taking saltwater reps lol
what do you feed your new fishes , did Mr. Crawdad make it in
Love your tank...it look a natural and beautiful!!
sun perch would be pretty
I’m just seeing this video and I would love to see a couple of small crappies in your tank.
Hey guys I’m here from Spicy from Backwoods Raised. Y’all have an awesome channel
Thank you for stopping by and checking us out!!!
To not get water in your mouth u have the bucket it's going in or where is going out lower then the tank put water in the cup part raise it till it comes out other end out back in water till it makes a suction
Cool!
Are y’all going to put some more mud bugs in the tank. They are cool to watch. Good vid!
Definitely! They help clean up the bottom of the tank! They are great!!
That was a great video
Thank you!
Hi, question i was going to set up a tank like yours for the summer and return them in the fall but i read that fish kept in captivity could not be returned to the wild. They would not survive in the wild so i abandoned my tank idea. I was wondering what your thoughts are becuse you said you released your prior fish.
I'm surprised you don't use that tube with the stainless steel ball inside that you just shake up and down and gets the siphon going for you!
Yeah, we have had ick issues in the past. It is hard to treat. We always just try to do our best to isolate the sick fish from the healthy fish.
plastic cards-atm, c card ect work great from cleaning glass
...and a razor blade holder too!
To clean glass!...
Do you have pumpkin seed sunfish over there? They are my favorites! So beautiful!
We have a lot of long eared sunfish around that are very similar!
Your aquarium needs a Barracuda. Lol.
How about a gar? Lol
@@COLE_and_JAY That'll work. Lol. Take care.
Great looking freshwater tank. A friend set one up a few years ago. Redear bream, bass, creek minnows, and a really neat looking soft shell turtle!
You guys should get baby catfish
I love, love, love ur creek fish aquarium, my husband & I use to have several aquariums like this one, I love the all natural rocks ect. We also had not only blue gill but smal bass, small catfish they were so much fun to watch 😊
Hold the big end in the water with the opening pointing up.Let the big end fill up then Hold it up out of the water and let the water start draining into the tube. Right before all the water has drained out, quickly submerge the big end with the opening down. Siphon started without having to suck the nasty ass tube!!
ENJOYED IT AWESOME
