I'm pretty sure this song is about the book The Lord of the Flies. Those kids who get stranded on the island and form a violent tribe trying to survive on their own. The kid who ends up being the leader, through lying and cheating, kicks out of group of kids. He throws a rock at a kid with glasses, hitting him square in the face, breaking his glasses. When he says you're going to go far in the song I think he's being sarcastic. Just like at the end of the music video where the guy gets what's coming to him.
@@alexanderpavlovic8370 I think that's a clever correlation you've made but I doubt the song is about the novel my theory could be wrong and if it is I dont think it's that because he would have alluded to other characters in the video instead of just Ralph.
The song is speaking on people living lies. "a thousand lies and a good disguise" as if thats all it takes to fool people into them seeing you as something you are not, and fooling them is hitting them "right between the eyes". "dance fucker dance" is people just playing the part to fool people but "he never had a chance" because eventually people see your true colors ( had no chance of fooling anyone anymore. "it was really only you").
I always got the message of it being about how power corrupts, with "a thousand lies and a good disguise" being about the person lying to gain power, "hit them right between the eyes" being them betraying their friends and/or supporters, "dance fucker dance" being the whole lying PR dance politicians do to keep their power, and "you never had a chance" referring to how hard it is for an outsider to gain power, since the establishment of any given power system are all in bed with each other. really cool to see yet another example of how music and art can be so diversely interpreted :)
The Offspring are one of the most underrated bands of all time. When people talk about the great bands of the 90s and 2000s, the Offspring are hardly ever mentioned and that's a shame. They influenced so many of the bands that are dominating radio right now.

This is classic punk/pop-punk. They were one of the bands that really ushered us into what we understand as pop-punk. Green Day, Blink 182, Sum 41, etc. were attached to by society in the early 2000s because the genre had enough of the punk energy that people wanted to gravitate towards while also keeping it poppy enough to make a lot of money.

I think the songs about a person who a master at deception, lies, and manipulation. The person then meets a person who wants to be like them. So the person teaches them but only to double-cross them. He's talking about people with a manipulative mindset. Think of it as a highschool bully who's narcassistic and manipulates people to get what he wants and that person grows up to be someone with a position of power like a cop, lawyer, or politician or CEO. Even though they've grown as an adult they haven't grown as a person. Ergo a thousand lies and a good disguise being a reference to manipulation and being fake, while hitting them between the eyes means they don't see it coming.

The line "hit 'em right between the eyes" is a common phrase that refers to shooting someone with a gun and hitting them between the eyes. in this situation it is not literally talking about killing people, but more so that he is wronging that person or betraying them or lying to their faces, etc.

The Offspring is awesome, Come Out and Play is one of their lesser talked about songs that I adore. I also HIGHLY recommend Franz Ferdinand- Take Me Out. One of my favorite songs.
Talk about throwback 😂 I remember listening to this song with my cousins in the back of their mom’s minivan on the way to the grocery store lmao and it’s still great music today!

“With a thousand lies and a good disguise” to me references artist who uses fake personas and back stories to win over their audience and fans. Think about it, 99.9% of the time when an indie artist goes to a major record label, their whole genre can be changed and they can end up playing music they don’t even like playing, but in the end. They do it for the money. That’s what this music video has always meant to me. I’m not sure what the true meaning behind the writing is, but there are a lot of wack artist who do get famous by lying about who they are to portray what the listeners think they want to hear. It happens in every genre of music, some for the better and some for the worst.

Offspring greats: the kids arent all right, come out and play, pretty fly (for a white guy), gone away, countless others. Definitely worth giving a second chance
I feel like the song is a statement on selling out and easy sucess. The “kid” in question has talent and knows what they’re doing, but in order to make it they have to play by someone else’s rules. Dance, monkey, dance as in being a dancing monkey and doing everything your supposed to do according to who’s in charge. Lie your way to the top, and put on a disguise so no one knows what you really think, and then once you actually make it to the top, you can “shoot them right between the eyes” and become your true self. The music video seems to suggest that as well as he gets the golden guitar that brings him fame until he steals the necklace, showing his true self, and gets the guitar taken + sent to Hell. It’s one of those depressing messages on top of an energetic background type songs
I recommend Hammerhead by the offspring if you’re down for another good song by them. The song is based on manipulation on others for your own selfish gain
Looked it up, according to the actual band Hammerhead is a song from the perspective of a gunman during a school shooting who believes he's doing it for the greater good.
This is the Lance Armstrong anthem. "Show me how to lie. You're getting better all the time. Turning all against one isn't all that hard to teach. Another clever word sets off an unexpecting hurt and as you step back into line the mob jumps to their feet..." Everytime I hear this song it reminds me of him.
As a teenager I used to listen to this song a lot and I always thought it was about a hitman. He's gotta wear a disguise so nobody recognizes him, he shoots the target right between the eyes, everybody else runs for their lives. The "dance fucker dance" made me think of those corny action movies where the guy fires a machine gun at the floor and tells someone to dance. There's also the lyric "now you steal away, take him out today" like taking out the target. And there's "clever alibis, Lord of the Flies" because the assassin needs a good alibi so he can't be tied to the crime.
Their first 2 CD's were pretty straight punk. Smash and Ixnay were more Alternative. Everything from Americana to the present has definitely been pop punk like you said.
@@boardwatch1560 Yea, if no has listened to their first 4 albums i would strongly suggest you do. It's quite surprising how many people say SMASH is their first album when asked
The song is talking about how record labels want you to pretend to be someone you are not. “With a thousand lies and good disguise you will go far” and no one will even know it was really only you.
The Offspring is a Punk Rock band. And they are very famous. One of the best bands I grew up to. The most famous songs that got them famous was ( Self esteem ) and ( Keep E’m Separated ) which is about when the singer use to worked as a chemist in a laboratory and he was making something when he realized the two chemicals he made were hot as hell and put them in the freezer or refrigerator together for about an hour , then went back to check on them and it was still hot. Then told himself “ these will never cool off I need to keep them separated “ and if you don’t believe me what he said the singer look it up on UA-cam he explains how he came up with the song ( Keep E’m Separated ) in an interview. But all in all The song ( Million Miles Away ) and ( Gone Away ) is my favorite. Btw Five Finger Death Punch did a cover of The Offspring’s song ( Gone Away ) you should do a reaction video to that one next.
Dexter Holland has got to be one of the smarted and most educated in music. He's got a PhD in molecular biology. There have been plenty of suggestions on other songs. I did "Gone Away" suggested a couple times. If you haven't done it already, I would follow that up with the cover by Five Finger Death Punch. I personally don't think the video fits the lyrics. That may be because I can't get past the original meaning but I don't think there's all that much room for re-interpretation without changing the lyrics.
I always saw it as an older assassin training a younger one and then the younger one is given a contract to kill the older one. But maybe that's because I first heard this while I was playing hitman
The song is a reference to the book Lord of the Flies. It's about how the dominant character of the book lied and everyone turned on the weaker (and innocent) character of the book that eventually lead to the mob killing him. The song basically is dealing with lies and deceit and how people can get away with so much if they're a good fake.
The offspring are what I like to call alternative punk. They were punk and then they made Smash. Which is still a very punky album. But it made them very famous and they started making more radio friendly songs
I remember when I was either 10 or 11 playing MX vs ATV with my brother and this song would always be on. It was sick as hell riding and listening to the song at the same time.
He’s talking about trying to come up in the music industry through hard core labels who give bands and artists no freedom or respect but than they were a band who wanted they’re fans to see they’re music and relate to it in their own way
I like a lot of songs by The Offspring, including this one, which is one of my faves. But if you've never heard them before, and particularly for those watching, who aren't really into this genre of music, you've got to listen to The Kids Aren't Alright, and Self Esteem first. Those two are two of their probably top 5 tracks for a reason. The melodies are driving the hooks are catchy, the stories.... super freaking relatable to SO MANY PEOPLE. No matter your preferred musical genre, gender, country, class, or race, you REALLY hear the lyrics in those two. Most people have been there, and can connect to one or both of those songs. The Offspring just punched us in the face with some of life and loves hard truths through some catchy songs, and boy, we felt it. 💥

Another clever word sets off an unexpecting hurt and as you step back into line the mob jumps to their feet..." Everytime I hear this song it reminds me of him.
The offspring is punk rock..give a listen to "the kids arent alright" their classic
And there's "clever alibis, Lord of the Flies" because the assassin needs a good alibi so he can't be tied to the crime.
offspring is considered like pop punk
Their first 2 CD's were pretty straight punk. Smash and Ixnay were more Alternative. Everything from Americana to the present has definitely been pop punk like you said.
@@boardwatch1560 Yea, if no has listened to their first 4 albums i would strongly suggest you do. It's quite surprising how many people say SMASH is their first album when asked
Genre is punk, pop punk, alternative. They get around several genres but predominantly it’s safe calling it pop punk
This is gonna be a good one
The song is talking about how record labels want you to pretend to be someone you are not. “With a thousand lies and good disguise you will go far” and no one will even know it was really only you.
I wanna see you watch “pretty fly (for a white guy)” by the offspring.
I think you’d appreciate it.
I haven't even thought of this song in so long!!! Thanks for the throw back!!!🔥🔥🔥👌
This is their “pop” stuff. Listen to 90’s offspring.
Fax
Still a badass song
This is one of my new favorite songs now. I'm glad you liked it bud
React to “Mr brightside” by the killers you might like it you might not, but give it a shot plz
And then do :When We Were Young"
This is one of those songs where you can have like 10 different interpretations from different people and none of them would be wrong
React to Tomazacre vs River GBB 💯🔥😱!!
I always saw it as an older assassin training a younger one and then the younger one is given a contract to kill the older one. But maybe that's because I first heard this while I was playing hitman
Who else knows this most from every Naruto AMV back then😂
The song is a reference to the book Lord of the Flies. It's about how the dominant character of the book lied and everyone turned on the weaker (and innocent) character of the book that eventually lead to the mob killing him. The song basically is dealing with lies and deceit and how people can get away with so much if they're a good fake.
Really? Of ALL The Offspring songs THIS was the one recommended? That's sad
The Offspring started out as a punk rock band and slowly developed into alternative for the most part.
Honestly, I don’t like the Offspring, you’re gonna go far kid is the only song I really appreciate of them. Great reaction by the way !
Haha dang what about self esteem?
Genre they usually land in punk, pop punk, post-punk, alt punk.
First
Second
You got it boi #1is you
The offspring are what I like to call alternative punk. They were punk and then they made Smash. Which is still a very punky album. But it made them very famous and they started making more radio friendly songs
1:42 The Offspring is punk, not metal, so that's why.
The song is about the book "Lord of the Flies" discussing how the kids were able to to maliciously able to turn others against each other violently.
I remember when I was either 10 or 11 playing MX vs ATV with my brother and this song would always be on. It was sick as hell riding and listening to the song at the same time.
This is my favorite band. This is such a great song
YES , I WAS WAITING FOR THIS! thanks bro!
He’s talking about trying to come up in the music industry through hard core labels who give bands and artists no freedom or respect but than they were a band who wanted they’re fans to see they’re music and relate to it in their own way
Offspring is pop punk, part of the new punk wave that started in the mid 90s
The Offspring started as SoCal Punk, morphed into Pop Punk and nowadays seem to be more Alt Rock with Punk flavor. Ill be a fan till the day i die!
They're not rock, it's punk rock. Great video, keep 'em coming!
The Offsprings is a punk rock band.
This song came quite late in their career, you might wanna check out some of their older stuff.
Sam'Onella's tumor twin: Do YoU LiStEn To tHe OfFsPrInG???
Aaah man. Not the first song I would have picked for someone who has never heard them before. Such a good group.
Love your channel man, keep it going!!!
the offspring are normally categorized as pop, punk, skate punk and alternative rock
This genre could be classified under punk-pop, punk, alternative, rock 🙂
The biggest band punk rock bro
This genre is pop punk, a subgenre of punk rock
