This song got me through so much as a teenager. I was on drugs really bad and my friends were dropping like flies. I'm now 4 years sober and grateful for everyday.
Fun facts: The singer of The offspring has a Ph.D in Molecular Biology, is a successful investor and is worth about 80 million dollars. I just love that this cliche surfer dude who plays 2000s' punk rock, is in fact a smart mother fucker. This band is all my teenager years.
Dexter wrote this after a trip back to his hometown and found out all the people on his street had met some kind of tragedy. The cursed street of your hometown. We all have one.
I don't know anybody I grew up with. I'm 36, I just finished school 3 years ago. I was the guy who could've OD'd. I'm glad I didn't. I'm a Computer Tech now, I fix game consoles, I remember when this came out. I was 14 and I didn't know what this tune was all about. Now I say it's one of Offspring's best.
My dad grew up with and is still good friends with Noodles(the guitar player) from the offspring. I can confirm a lot of people from that neighborhood didn’t end up doing much with their lives haha
Dex is such a nice guy, met him once and he was playing the host and handing out drinks and socializing then "hold my beer" strides out on stage and hits the mic on his mark. Other people had great recommendations, adding my vote to the popular ones... but as a joke do Intermission lol.
I love this song, it was one that me and one of my best friends in high school bonded over, sadly he took his own life last year and every time I hear it I get very emotional just reminiscing.
I'm glad to see you do this song. It means a lot to me. The song came out when I was in high school, and I loved the groove but I thought the lyrics were a little bit campy. Twenty years later, I can change the names and feel like I know every person in the song and that hits hard. I know that Holland wrote the song in response to returning home to the street in Huntington Beach where he grew up and finding out how many things had happened to his childhood friends, but I think it sadly resonates everywhere. I graduated from a rural high school in one of the richest counties in America, and we thought we were invincible. We had everything going for us - even the less affluent kids could count on social programs to get them to Virginia Tech if they qualified, and they kids that couldn't go to college could still count on well-paying jobs in horse and cattle ranching. Not two years after graduation, one of my classmates OD'd and asphyxiated on his own vomit. A year later, his brother committed suicide. Now two decades later, I find myself talking to friends wondering if it's normal for a class of 220 to have lost dozens of people to drugs, incarceration, or suicide - including my fiancé of ten years.
It is AMAZING how many people have the EXACT same stories NO MATTER where you are from, what your race is OR what your economic background is EVERYONE remembers when they were kids and the people they "grew up" with and how EVERYONE is going to have this bright and shiny future and be what that want to be in life. And NOW present day can look back and just have names after names of people that they knew that have died from suicides, drug overdoses, homicides, etc. The game of LIFE is no game at all and it can be cruel at times.
I remember this song playing on MTV when I was a kid. I thought the folks in the video were crazy in a funny way, thinking that'd never be the people I know and adults have it all figured out. Nope, we're way the fuck crazier now than then and this song hit's in a different way. Do more Offspring, skate-punk has some really catchy riffs!
The Offspring: Pretty Fly (for a White Guy). The title itself made me listen to it. lol Their biggest song is Self Esteem. Their most impactful songs is Gone Away.
I really love The Offspring. if you like lyrics that hit home you could also try "Americana" and "Pay The Man". They have a lot of good songs in my personal opinion. A lot of that is also a big part of my teenage years, and at the same time i was listening to Eminem and Dr. Dre as well!
This Song Was Legit The One That Introduced Me To The Music World.. What I Mean Is Really What Made Me See Music In A Tremendously Different Manner.. I Remember How Much Energy I Felt When I First Heard This Song.. How Old I Was...Around 14 Or 15.. And The Fucking Irony Behind The Entire Situation...How This Song Talked About How When We Were Younger We Saw Everything Easier..We Saw Life Easier In General.. And As We Got Older Things Changed...As I Started Listening To More Music And Rock And How I Really Felt Like Life Was Easy I Would Always Find Myself Thinking This Due To This Particular Song.. The Offspring Was My First Favorite Band Ever And I Would Always Hear Them Everyday For A Few Months... Time Has Passed Now...Im 22 And Whenever I Hear This Song... It Really Just Takes Me Back To The Old Days Of When Life Was Seriously Easier Than What It Is Today... But Im Grateful That It Really Opened My Third Eye And Made Me Realize How Fucked Up This World Is... How Difficult Life Can Be And Most Importantly How To Fight Against It And To Overcome It All That Opposes You And Stands In Your Way... Im Just Happy This Song Still Gives Me The Same Energy That It Gave Me When I First Heard It... (To Whomever It May Concern I Appreciate You Reading My Comment And Wish You The Best In Life..) Thanks For Doing This Reaction Man Im Glad To See Youre Enjoying The Offspring...Gotta Check Out "Gone Away"

Love your reactions! I used to listen to Offspring in junior high- they got soft after the Smash Album. You should react to "Bad Habit"!! Just not while you're driving.. might get a speeding ticket! hahah
You seem to have a appreciation for music and not just one genre! If u want to see true classic musicianship, do the trash or pass video of "November Rain" by Guns and Roses... it probably one of the rock ballads that bring so much different sounds all packed into a 9 minute ballad!
Life hits. One of the hardest inescapable truths. People think mortality is the worst inevitability, but the end isn't necessarily the worst that can happen. Sometimes those hits are just too damn hard.

My man, you're getting slow with the reactions to Bring Me The Horizon. I recommend you Kingslayer from their last EP. You should also listen to Dear Diary, 1x1 and the song they made with Amy Lee from Evanescence.
WILLYCHILLY I enjoy him reacting to rock because he clearly doesn’t listen to it often, so it’s a fresh perspective. He does rock music once a week so he does do it doesn’t he
This song his me hard. A couple years ago, I had a friend, this younger guy. Musician and sound engineer that graduated from Berklee. Kid could've gone on to do and be successful at any number of things. Last year he was bumming some oxy from someone to numb the pain from a spine condition he had. Fuckers gave him straight fentanyl. Now he's gone and I'm still here. A self taught hack of a guitarist and mechanic. Rest in peace, my brother.
Out of curiosity, is there a reason you cut to different parts of the song? Not mad or anything, it's just a little confusing when I'm moving to the music and suddenly it jumps ahead on me.
I believe he means first reaction to the song not the band. Then again who knows. Also seems like anything that isn’t rap he tends to fast forward through it while editing. Lol
For some people life hits you like a freight train. You think everything is going great, you're hopeful, and it just doesn't work out. Don't let life get the best of you, you'll never get out alive.
