About 5 years ago, I had an Angel fish and I knew she was a female. She would constantly lay eggs on my filter stem and watch over them, then eventually eat them. All this without a male. She was a very large Angel with only a small bump on her head, right behind her eyes. Thing is, I suspected she was a female even before she started laying eggs. Yes, it can be difficult to differentiate between the males and females but sometimes you can tell. Being an avid aquarist for over 30 years like myself, maybe I've been doing this for so long that it's just instinctual by now... One last thing, your fish are very beautiful.

Here is a major difference between both male and female angel fish.
If one of them lays eggs then it's female.
Probably means you can't tell unless they lay eggs so it's just a guessing game

Thank you Master for this video and info. In fact, I have always read that angle male is territorial and will bully other ones in the tank. I have one large white fish and he kept bullying and terroterizing the tank. But then all of a sudden he turned to be she!!! Could not believe my eyes even when I saw her LAYING EGGS on the plastic scrapper attached to the aquarium glass. as you said these fish are very unpredictable sex-wise. one yellowish male paired with her and fertilized the eggs. I am now trying to identify the sex of the other two striped angles I have from whom I saw no proof of anything. Only thing I noticed is that the he-turned-out-to-be-she angle is always bickering with them!
What’s up every one I have a question would two males or two females pair up ????? Or do only males and females pair up ???

You said no physical appearance way to tell, but it’s the breeding tubes! I have 4 angelfish in one tank. (29 gallon with 90 gallon filter) my 2 biggest RICO & Mort seam to be non aggressive towards each other. Mort is bigger than Rico because I bought him as a large fish. Mort is agressive towards Ricardo and Rica and my dwarf gourami though. Mort and Rico have the same size breeding tubes. When compared to the other fish:
Rico is a boy as well as Mort.
Rica and Ricardo are girls.
Can the “breeding tubes” grow with the fish? -not ment to be weird!😶

I have 6 angles in one tank 1 couple layed eggs and eat them will they lay again
Excellent video. Never knew about the breeding tube. Ive always had to wait and see if they pair up to be able to sex them. Over the years ive had angels, All of the males had the bump on the head but it only became visible after they pair up. Also, i think its a bit frustrating to have to wait for so long to be able to sex them because if i want a tank full of schooling angels they all have to be the same sex otherwise they just break the schooling and start pairing up and fight over space or some plant. Very annoying!!
xSean145 I have 4 angels in my 29 gallon and they fight. 2 against 2! Big vs small. What should I do? Grow out the 2 small in a 10 gallon or buy more small to even it out or remove the 1 agressive fish and flush him? JK the agressive one was 20 dollars!!! The 2nd largest, Rico is just eating an Amazon Sword leaf! Good thing the Amazon Sword plant is growing a stem of babies that I need to cut off and plant or sell!
I was so happy when I found this video to find the gender of my juvenile angelfish.... I shall never know.

My angles are young both of them have no breeding tubes that I can see its just flat under there is it because they are still young ? they are about 1 in a half to two inches long their still babies..
you will only see the breeding tube when they have paired off with another angelfish.

i have 4 angelfish. i have just noticed eggs in my tank.. this is the first time they've ever dropped eggs. 1 is guarding the eggs.. ahhhh

jewel south I have tried to put all the angles together before and what I learned from that is both male and female can be equally aggressive to others. I have to try to pair them up so many times. I have three tanks and it too me quite awhile to pair them or group them until they show no aggression to each other's:)
