Ferrari's last NA v8 makes this a modern classic and icon
So many first and lasts with the 458 that its tough to contextualize its importance properly. It's just so good.
@@TedwardDrives Well said Ted 👏
Yep after this one the 488 and the f8 got me sleep. They’re basically an Italian McLaren at that point
@@Jwellan I wonder what is the next "successor" of those cars you mentioned. I think they will beef up the engine capacity, or bigger the turbos, and with more aerodynamic body. I'm sure they won't put battery in it, there's already sf90
@@happysnekk well, 296 and sf90 are the succesors. Its like the line would just split into those 2.
This car has aged absolutely beautifully. What a timeless design
Mark my words ill buy a 458 in two years and hold it my whole life. Been a dream since I was 17 nearly a decade ago. Im SO CLOSE
Do it!
It is still my dream car after I saw Vicky butler cry after driving it on fifth gear. One day!
This. ua-cam.com/video/5PmB4WPZo3o/v-deo.htmlsi=c2S8Mdoijp4jpKXX
I bought one last year and it has been the best decision I've ever made with cars. I'll never sell it. It is so unbelievably good! I hope you buy yours soon man!
@@sc2thrashmetal Love it man. Im in a gt4 right now I really love, but might have to sell it to get the ferrari sooner!
15 year old ferrari looks so timeless and still so relevant. i've always considered this an exercise in minimalist aesthetics that will carry over into the future just fine. I mean that interior still looks so good, so functional. It very much reminds me of the S2000 interior.
Oh my gosh, I still go back and watch the old 458 vid from years ago time to time. This is great!
God I love the 458. Got to ride in one a few years ago and I don't know if I'll ever beat that feeling.
Probably one of the best ferraris made
I drove a 458 spyder like 12 years ago and I enjoyed every minute of it
For my money, the most beautiful mid engine V8 Ferrari ever made.
It is really good. I think the F8 looks really good too.
ive driven a 458 simple looking and works great. they really hold their value.
What a soundtrack. Your 'graduate from a Civic Si' is legit!
I love that this car is not laden with ipads everywhere. It has enough to enjoy the car’s potential, but not enough for distractions. Lovely blue shade as well. ♥️🥰
15:08 - the chuckle of joy after accelerating is part of the "spec" that comes with a 458 spider... Happens every time I drive mine 😍😎 Best car ever made.
This car aged so well. I always used to drive the 458 in Forza motorsport over a decade ago, and I can't believe it still looks modern.
It has a "bumpy road button" Its the strut icon button the on the wheel. Great video as always!
I love how I can experience these fancy cars vicariously through Tom's eyes 😅
Awesome review Tom!
Thank you!
the C8 Z06 took huge inspiration from this. I'd still take this over a C8 Z06 any day of the week
You cannot convince me that design is so many years old, they just created something timeless and we all knew it back then.
Lovely colour. I love the noise these make *before the exhaust flaps open* induction growl I believe. The F430 induction growl sounded even better.
Such a beautiful, amazing car! The F430 Scuderia is still one of my most favorite cars of all time. But this 458 sounds so amazing! I'm glad that Chevy tried to carry on that beautiful sound with the C8 Z06 engine.
This is my favorite Ferrari. It looks and sounds awesome. I’m sure I’ll only ever drive it in video games, but it’s still fun.
There's something calming about Tedward videos, I think its because I used to work in Waltham for a long time and remember all all of these roads.
The 458 spider is my ''it'' car. Beautiful, sounds great and quite timeless when it comes to tech. Maybe one day! Thank you Tedward for letting us enjoy this wonderful Ferrari!
Gran turismo 5 memories of driving these, and thinking they were the most beautiful car in the game
Yeah! a 458 video!
owned a 2010 italia and sold for a 2018 GT3 about 4 years ago. Can't go wrong with either. I just wish ferrari offered the 458 with 3 pedals. that would make it a perfect car.
Yeah, to make it the "perfect Ferrari" you'd need the manual option. 😞
GT3 any day of the week. Nice choice
If i remember correctly, the last manual Ferrari was the California and the ones that were actually sold with a manual were single digits. That's why they don't offer it anymore
Awesome video! The blue looks great in the sun
"The art of this vehicle" just like any well designed/made vehicle is why we love them. It elevates them from 'transport' to something else. Right on, Ted!
One of the greatest car of all times
You are right, this was peak modern Ferrari. My dream car!
Tour De France Blue is one of my favorite Ferrari colors.
A few headers, an inconel exhaust, a slight suspension upgrade and bam, the perfect car
Great vid! You can turn the 80mph beep you mention off in the settings…
I was literally just watching older reviews of this gen of ferrari and this drops
What a nice spec! Love seeing Ferraris that aren’t red
A Porsche 997 and this beast would be my dream garage.
Thank you
I love watching your videos!
And I love your comments! Thanks
15:42
that sounds as good as old aston v12s at low revs, that deep growl is amazing
I think the 430, 458, and California are peak V8 Ferrari. Before then they were too high maintenance, after they went turbo. Those 3 hit the sweet spot.
Love the wheels on this car! Ferrari 5-spoke is timeless!
I don't like the headlights on 458 and 488.
Beautiful spec
This was the car that got me into cars. God, it’s incredible.
Such an amazing sounding car
classic car . somebody who loves cars would choose this over alot of exotic cars
0:40 The MG MGF came with a hardtop in 1997, and it's a mid engined rear wheel drive car.
The F8 is one of the best looking modern Ferraris imo
I love how he did the 🤌at 8:48.
Tedward making videos for us on a 106 degree day❤
Thanks for making the video. Always enjoy your videos. Wondering why you didn’t experience it in race mode? The shifts get punchier, throttle more sensitive and cars feels a lot more racy and your can also experience how well the bumpy road mode works. Also would like to hear your thoughts on this and the STO. What was more emotional driving experience relative to two last of its kind NA motors. Would be great if you can do a compare video with sto and a speciale.
Well done! What a car
These are very cool cars, and surprisingly, very spacious. Drove one a few years ago. It was not the experience I was expecting? It made no sound till you were high in the rev range! I actually had a Civic Si at the time with an exhaust done by a speed shop. At low rpm, the Civic sounded better!
...I never go managed to be fascinated by Ferraris N/A V8s... I wanted the 458 so badly over 15 years ago but simply didn't fall in love with the experience (or lack of, in my case) it offers. I always ended up with Ferraris N/A 12 cylinders as especially these engine layout oozes everything I am looking for in a weekender....
If you wanna get technical, the Lotus Elise can be a hardtop convertible that existed before the 458. But I think it’s more classified as a roadster and the 458 is still the first powered hardtop mid-engine convertible.
Yeah it’s for powered hard top convertibles. So that and Carrera GT don’t meet the requirement. Or murcielago
The Need For Speed Rivals video game introduced me to this car. The game sound and real-life sound match.
excellent video my man, been waiting a long time for this one. thanks a ton for reviewing the 458 spider and the italia a couple years ago. could you please do one or two with the 488 gtb and/or spider?
Ahh yes! My favorite Ferrari!
Not a huge Ferrari guy. But wow the 458 is something else!!!
The engine sound top down is glorious. Only The LFA sounds more F1-like. Going up the gears sounds so fun!! Tedward acting like The Michael!!
This 458 is where Ferrari nailed it! This car is Michaelangelo's "David" and will age so well. Total lust object.
Can I get a ride in that please??
Love mine! best car
Agreed, best modern V8 Ferrari hands down. What a beauty. That Tour De France blue is amazing in the sun. 458 are so pricy tho, and for good reason. Keeping it ‘affordable’, and for a similar type of driving experience…what do you think of Z06 cab?
Only Ferrari I ever loved ❤
*Casually agreeing with you on maintenance even though I can't buy a 458* XD
I love the 458! Has to be my favourite Ferrari besides the 488 :)
Love the 458!!
I love the blue color, I still think the classic rosso corsa is better, but this blue looks excellent.
I am going to buy a 458 - mark my words :D
I am that 8th gen civic si to hopefully ferrari 458 guy! I love vtec and i love NA ferrari engines 😂. I will have a proper k series again one day parked next to a 458 or ferrari 812
6:24 The infotainment in this is quite interesting, and it's a shame it wasn't showcased. If memory serves me right, the controls on the left are for the left screen, which shows driving and trip related stuff. The knob on the right is for... you guessed it, the screen on the right, which has the usual infotainment stuff: navigation, media and settings. It's very nicely done, in my opinion; Audi did it better with the full screen, but you miss out on the analog gauge.
Hey ted, i think the mclaren mp4-12c spider was first with the hardtop convertible ^^
man how do you get to drive so many cool cars
A Nero Daytona 458 Speciale Coupe and a Verde Mantis Huracan Performante would be the ultimate dream garage 🖤💚
That color... 😍
Thoreau would not be happy with you making all that rack and disturbing his peace and quiet in the woods.😉
That color combo is absolutely gorgeous. Having driven the F430 spyder, Scuderia, and a 458 spyder, on and off track, I’d be happy with any one of those. The 458 is definitely a step up than the F430, especially with the dual clutch as you said, but they both sound and drive amazing. Even non car people can tell they are in special.
0:36 cracked me up a little too much.
you can adjust and turn off the speed indicator that beeps.
now thats a real V8.
Someone who knows their stuff! 😊
There have been plenty of MR convertibles with *removable* hardtops prior to this... but that's not the same thing! :P
Lol the real fun begins when the check engine light doesn’t turn off😂. Probably my favorite ferrari design of all time
Count down to panic attack with every start 😂
This here car might just be the very definition of the PERFECT driver's car.
EDIT because of 22:40 : YOU my friend are a VERY wise man! (I have an F20C but the point still stands! )
I’m currently shopping for a 458 Coupe or 488GTB or 488Spider right now. The damn 458’s with decent specs are all bought up. Everything left over is crap specs and the 488’s are hit or miss. I know I know what a horrible problem to have but we are leaving the golden era of cars and heading into EV shitville so I’m trying to find something perfect to hang onto!
I can say that the Getrag 7 speed DCT in the 458 is very similar to the one in the BMW E90 M3, 335is, Z4 35is and 135i but not the same, with the difference being that the M3 has a different torque threshold rating.
Did the Toyota MR2 have a hard top? I'm pretty sure it's a mid-rear engine.
Sounds freaking amazing. Does a C8 Z06 sound this good?
ua-cam.com/video/UuRaHeFMfJU/v-deo.htmlsi=PyqSCHigRvJ8Jioj
Edit: Tried to post a link a few times, both disappeared, but now the second one is back again above this one. I’ll keep this here just in case it disappears for whatever reason. Anyway, there is a great video of a guy driving a pretty blue Z06 convertible in the hills of California with the top down, and it sounds amazing. I would post a link, but heaven forbid we link to UA-cam videos on UA-cam. Anyway, it’s pretty easy to find, it’s a blue with a blue dash etc., you’ll find it if you search for it, definitely worth a listen! Edit: well, now I see it up there, woo-hoo! Leaving this comment in place in case it pulls another Houdini
You could at least link to my Z06 video lol
@@TedwardDrives oh man, I really wanted to use one of yours! I tried but I couldn’t find one of you driving the convertible and I wanted to do apples to apples on sound. 😬
Ok, I went back and watched your Z06 video (the orange one). The ‘vette also sounds fantastic but the Ferrari has a kind of ‘snarl’ that I love to hear. Ferrari by a nose!
9:27 won’t put it in launch control but will redline it. 🆗
Nothing wrong with operating within the safe range of the engine. That’s fine. Clutch dumping it however introduces a lot of wear and load to driveline.
What do you think of the sound vs the older Ferrari 350 GT with the V12? I preferred the sound of the older car, by far. The new Ferrari sound is busy, but it just does nothing for me.
cant imagine what this must have been like 10 years ago holyyyyy
Just bought a n\a Lotus Exige for 24k here in the UK, I wonder if the smile per mile is worth tue 200k extra?
There are very rare manual 458's and they're worth mountains
What is the name of these blue? It is gorgeous and suite the car nicely👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The 458 Coupe was never a car that catch my eye, but the Spyder though... The 458 is so much better with the roof down.
Will Tedward ever make a bad video? I guess well never know
Today, Tedward drives the 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser cabriolet! 😃
@@TassieLorenzo Id watch with popcorn
Great car, shame it’s only available in auto😕
How many miles do you have to drive so the engine oil is hot enough to go WOT?
keep the Ferrari video coming , love the NA V8 😋
I think this is the last truly beautiful Ferrari.
The Roma looks pretty nice IMO, as does the 296. Ferrari's more restrained styling language these days mostly works well.
IDK about reliability, there's a lot of horror stories about the Getrag gearbox falling apart at 20k miles. And they cost tens of thousands just for a replacement unit.
Hardtop rear engine? How about Porsche 914?
Retractable hard top mid engine. 914 is just a roof panel that pops off
With a manual gearbox, this would be my dream modern super car.
😟 You'd have to make your own. Is that conversion possible?
Didn’t the Corvette C8 engine get reverse engineered from this 458 engine? Or was it the 488 I can’t recall. Either way, this was a good Ferrari in a granular way. Those clutches and transmissions of that era can be a bit pricey to service but it’s pay to play w all Ferraris anyways.
There is so much misinformation spreading about this. If you read the interviews with the Corvette engineers, they had already designed and built this engine prior to purchasing a 458 engine, which they took apart to figure out how Ferrari handled certain vibration effects in an FPC. Ferrari did not invent the FPC nor pioneer its usage for racing or production car use.
For starters, the FPC V8 was originally released into mass production by Cadillac in 1918. Further, in racing it was originally developed in the *USA* for an Indy car, known as the Novi engine, all the way back in *1941* (3L displacement, FPC 450 hp at 8,000 rpm), over two decades before Ferrari even attempted an FPC V8, and was developed and raced all the way up into the 1960s (742 hp at 8200 rpm in 1962). It is one of the most famous Indy racing engines ever built.
In Europe in the post- World War II era Coventry Climax out of the UK in the mid 1950s, later Alfa Romeo and Lotus began using the FPC V8s in racing applications decades before Ferrari adopted them. So did Ferrari ‘steal’ as some have put it from Novi, Coventry Climax, Alfa Romeo whose top engine designers they hired in the late 1960s? What do you think? In any case, they certainly did not in any way shape or form originate this configuration or adapt it to racing or production first.
As far as mid engine configuration goes, there were working Corvette prototypes with a mid engine V8 in the mid to late 1960s, nearly a decade before Ferrari introduced their first rear engine V8 sports cars, and Ford and Alfa Romeo also released mid engine V8 sports cars prior to Ferrari doing it.
