Thank you, thank you, thank you for saying that the paper is NOT Tomoe River paper! The misinformation about this is really frustrating, and I've been meaning to write something/make a video about it (maybe I still will). I've been using a Stalogy since July, in addition to TR paper for various things, and the paper is definitely not the same. I'm not sure if you use fountain pens at all, but there is a definite difference in the writing experience between Stalogy and TR paper (P.S. I am an experienced FP user, 10+ years of use). Yes, the papers are similar in that they have a similar gsm, but the Stalogy paper doesn't have many of the unique features that make TR paper such a pleasure to write on with FPs (e.g. super smooth, sheen, long dry times).
I actually emailed Nittoms recently to see if they could confirm that the paper is not TR (which it isn't) and this is the reply that I got:
"I am Kiyomi Hoshi of Nitoms Inc., who warking for our satationery collection, "STALOGY".
Thank you very much for your interest in the paper of our 365 Days Notebook.
We are sorry for our belated reply.
We would not like to say this but it is compny confidencial matter so that we could not answer your inquiry.
Only we could tell you is the paper is high-quality paper for daialies and notebooks.
We would be appreciate your kind understanding.
    All the best"
The fact that they will not confirm that it isn't TR, and the fact that TR is not mentioned on any of the official product pages, coupled with my personal experience with both Stalogy and TR paper just reaffirms to me that Stalogy does not use TR paper. It's in their best interests to keep people guessing, and to have people thinking that they use TR paper, as it leads to more sales.
That said, if you use ballpoint/rollerball/pencil the Stalogy is more than adequate. Even if you use FPs and are careful with your ink and nib choices, then Stalogy can be ok. The paper has a lot more feedback than TR, and is more absorbent, but some people are ok with that, especially if they've not experienced the wonders of TR paper.
Anyway, sorry for the rant! I hope that this is useful to you, and to others!

Thank you for that! Yes, I thought it was very strange that nowhere does it mention what the paper is - you would think that they'd like to advertise if it was in fact tomoe river paper. I've never used a fountain pen on the stalogy, but now I know! Thanks again

Yes, if it was tomoe river it would be in their best interest to advertise it. Maybe once I have time I'll do a video where I actually write in the books with various inks and nibs so people can see. I just don't want people to be disappointed like I was!

Thanks for sharing your detailed observation and experience on using both these notebooks. I don't usually read comments but I am glad I did. I just don't understand why Stalogy have to keep the information as to whether they are using (or not using) TRP for their 365 days notebook. Well at least they should mention the kind of paper to inform their customers.

I love my A6 stalogy. Mine lays nice and flat. The paper is divine I used to use a pocket size for edc and an A5 for home now all I use is the
    stalogy. Great little big book.

I love my Stalogy, and I'm waiting to use my first Hobonichi. I use the A5 Stalogy for journaling, and plan to use the A6 Hobonichi strictly for planning. Thanks for adding to the Stalogy content on UA-cam! :D

Thanks Joanna. I have wasted so many pages in my expensive A6 Hobonichi that I feel guilty for doing so! I guess I could go back and go a little mad with art and doodles? The Stalogy format releases me from that. Also I am not stuck with a Notebook/Planner for just 2018. With the Stalogy I start my year from the first day I use it.
I ordered mine through Amazon UK, just the one. Its started wending its way from Japan. It should be here in about a months time or less. I ordered a B6 because I want to use it as a writers journal. So an entry might run over many pages with the odd journal entry in between. I am wondering if the pages are numbered? If not then I will do that before I start and leave a few pages at the front as an index. You have confirmed it was a good buy. Thanks again. x

Thank you for this review. I love both Hobonichi and Stalogy, but cannot justify the cost of the Hobonichi on my teacher budget. I draw in month on two pages overview in the Stalogy and as you said, just make it what I want. Just ordered another Stalogy using your link. :-)

I will begin using my first Hobonichi (A6) January 2017. I can't wait!! I n the meantime, I have been using the Stalogy A6 plain notebook. I am looking forward to writing on the Tomoe River paper since I've heard so much about it, but...the paper in the Stalogy is really nice. I mostly use a Pentel Energel Needle tip 0.5 or the Mitsubishi uni-ball signo DX that I get from Jet Pens, and both papers take the pens so nicely.
Thanks for the comparison of the Hobonichi and the Stalogy. I think I'm going to love and use them both! I would love to see how you use the Stalogy as a bullet journal.

Wish I had discovered Stalogy before ordering Hobonichi Cousin from Japan in UK. I love it, but can't justify expense again. Happy to know there is a true equivalent to the Hobo I can order next year.

  • @Jennifer-wr9si

How did you get a 3-pack for the price of 1 Hobo? I bought my Hobo last year for GBP 26ish at Foyles and a single Stalogy a6 this year for GBP 21 on Amazon...
Re: paper, I can't figure out what it is either but it's not TRP. Using a wet fountain pen, the Stalogy paper is definitely more absorbent than TRP. Honestly, if the Hobo had about 3-4x more note pages I would have stayed with the Hobo.

Hi Jennifer, I guess I got lucky! I got 3 in one pack on amazon for £21 but bought my hobo from hobonichi store - so I guess with shipping included it comes to about £40ish, I guess with the cover too it all adds up :)

Piali Das You can order from amazon.co.uk or jet pens but your best bet is to join the Facebook hobonichi buy and sell group and get it from there or order direct from hobonichi.com

I think Louise Duncan above can clarify that for you in her wonderful comment. It doesn't bleed with faber castell pens, that I know for sure
