I love the way your reviewers are built. You show us some story, you show us some art, you explain the awesome combat, and then leave it up to us to decide how good a game is for ourselves. :D
And I would not give 10 to CT, that game has to much flaws, well to be honest I would give it a 8 at max but mostly coz CT is just an avarage to good RPG. Overrated as fuck btw. Cross on the other hand is one of best RPGs there, for PSX alone it would lose only to FF7 and Suikoden 2. But for sure CC i bether than Xenogears or FF9 that are awesome games. 10/10 easly.
The main thing that kept me from really getting into this, aside from the fact that the Chrono Trigger references might as well not have even been there. Is the issue with the huge cast, most of the characters will say the same thing when you bring them with you to the same event except with a different "accent" on their dialogue.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. Great review. But I got to ask you why the image is so smooth and clear in your footage. As beautiful as the game is, HD TVs make any game from this era look like pixel vomit.
Decided to skip ahead in watching your videos to check out the new one. :P I love Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger. Although I was initially one of those people that was put off by differences between this game and Trigger. So I put it down for a bit, and eventually did come back to it with a fresh perspective. And I'm glad that I did! This is an excellent game. I do agree with you about the character development. It would have been nice to get more growth from some of the characters outside the main few. I do understand that it's hard to develop a cast as large as Chrono Cross, but it would have helped. There were definitely a few characters I was hoping would get more out of their stories, after getting just a taste of something interesting from them. That isn't anywhere near a deal breaker though. The story, the visuals, the music, the battle system, the entire package is still awesome and one that should be experienced. ;) Great review!
This was a very well done review of my favorite game. As rabid of a fan as I am, I don't think I can really disagree with anything you said for the most part. Certainly got me to click on that sub button.
Hey, in your intro there looks to be an RPG with a guy wielding a glowing green sword and fighting a dragon. What game is that from? It has me rather curious.
Great review! This is the first informative Chrono Cross review I've come a-CROSS. XD In all seriousness, I like how your channel is focused on RPG's. So I'm gonna subscribe and await further reviews if that's alright with you. ;)
How did I find this video? I've been playing Chrono Trigger on my DS lately and wanted to know if Cross was any good. I'll take your word for it and try it out.
As a child of the 90s-2000s, I can't say I felt the same kind of frustration or "disappointment" that CC was NOT a sequel to CT in more ways. As such, I had the feeling that you emphasized this issue a little much in this review, when you could have discussed the sidequests more, and amended your criticism of the lack of character development for the pool of 45 playables by discussing the results of people meeting their alternate selves from more perspectives. (As I write this, I remember that you mentioned Van.) Yeah, I really feel like the looming shadow of disappointment in Cross as a non-sequel to Trigger takes up too much of the 12.43 play time of this video. Don't you want to let that play out in the comments section instead? haha
Fantastic review Andrew. I was waiting for your next video like an addict for so long lol. this game is fantastic and every JRPG fan should give it a try. Great Game. Great Review. Great Reviewer.
This game is so underrated and it really deserve to be played by any JRPG fan. But man your videos are so awesome. Believe me when I say you are my favorite reviewer now. This channel is meant for greatness and I hope your channel grows bigger. Keep the good work dude (Again I am sorry for my English, Its not my native language )
Good review. In fact excellent review. And you hit the main problem: Character development and the convoluted plot line, really mar the experience especially when the battle system, presentation, and visuals are stunning. Battle system really stands out but the lack of difficulty hurts it from being perfect. Good observation. This games themes and story while interesting and bold, and it gets points for not treating the player like an idiot, is just complex for complexities sake especially when you consider the source lore of trigger. It becomes even worse due to the lack of character development and vague backstories. In terms of story and characters the nail in the coffin for me was the weak final boss and no "real" villan (Dragon god and the gutting of Lavos) Only thing i disagree with you is on the music. Mixed bag for me here. Typically ranging from good to passable but the themes fit well. Good review. Overall Good game. Battles, Visuals, Really good surface Presentation and potential carry this for me in my eyes. 7/10 for me. P.S: In hindsight do you think this game was actually hurt by being associated with the CT universe?
+Viper4ever05 I wasn't having issues with it until some of the events after the Dark Serge parts. When they started talking about Lynx being a creation and an emissary of the FATE supercomputer and referencing Lavos and Trigger's cast showed up, I had to play it again and read some external sources, lol.
I'm surprised that the Field color and Summoning conditions you found problems with. I find most summoning in games like FF and such too overpowering and easy they can break the game (biggest is FFX, just use summon overdrives and you win most fights in story). And if you do use the summoning in CC, it is very powerful due to the field color bonus (can one shot bosses in most cases if you do a debuff first). I think that both CC and CT games are great, if you come at them separately. Having such high expectations for any game will cause it to fall, even if it is still a great game b/c it is not what you are expecting. I'm expecting this same thing to happen with FF7 and FF7 remake (whenever it comes out, part one anyway). Overall I love both Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger, Chrono Trigger is slightly better, only because the character development and plot in Trigger is better b/c of more focused narrative and straightforward story vs Chrono Cross's convoluted one and character development spread out among the 40+ characters and where even after you beat CC, you need to play it a few times to understand it.
can't find any specific disagreement with that - I disliked (i use the word loosely) the system because of how cumbersome it felt to set up the summons. I'm not really juxtaposing cc's system with ff's pre-12 summons (they tried to directly address the power of previous summons in 12 and messed it all up) - they both have pretty pronounced issues and can be addressed separately. Other wise, I'm right there with you in regards to the rest of your comment.
You should start by Nocturne since is the first Shin Megami Tensei to be released to the west (i'm not considering Persona series because to me is a completely different concept, at least P3 and P4).
i like chrono cross the first half anyways ive never seen anyone debate about this game though. about the concept i mean im very interested in seeing someone talk about this and darwinism though!
I played chrono cross way before I played chrono trigger and I feel as though square had a lot of ambitious ideas but they didn't care enough to appropriately carrying them out for chrono cross, as they did with crono trigger. two things about crono cross that frustrated me to the point we're I'd just give up playing halfway through is is with the combo system and summon system. they should have made the combo system to were at least 2/3 of the special between characters can be paired up. I only found out one combo which is cross cut between Glenn and serge. then you you know how they dropped the ball when dealing with summons. it's like at some point I start to feeling like I don't care because I feel as though the programmers stopped carrying at some point. though in the end I do have the soundtrack and it is amazing. so it's definitely not a bad game it's just a very demanding game for really no good award.
Update the textures and backgrounds, yes, but also add more side quests to develop more characters, like Janice, Turnip, Pip, Luccia, etc. Edit: How cool would it be if you brought Pip to meet Luccia in her lab to her evaluate his progress in an optional boss fight with her and bulbs and winning, she reveals she made him for war and he disagrees saying combat isn't what makes him strong, but traveling with Sergekins and "bwoadening his howizons." Luccia would like to travel with him to test his theory and after all this, unlock a new dual tech with her.
I really want to like this game but the whole second disc just disappoints me. It is just a whole exposition dump even the ending. I just lose interest after that because before that disaster the game and story really is not bad. The story between Humans and Demi-humans are interesting. The way they portray a person being outcast by almost the whole world is great. The people and the party members are interesting enough. But they forced the last part of the game to connect itself to Chrono Trigger even if it doesn't need to. The game is great in it of itself without the Trigger part of the story. And because of that I will not consoder this as a sequel or part of any Trigger whatsoever.
It is just sad how people tend to forget about Crono Cross, I was happy enought to play this game before Trigger and for sure Cross is superior in any way. Chrono Trigger lacks character development even though it has less characters then Cross! Also main hero in Trigger is just one of worst in any JRPG, basicly he is a human potato and you could swamp Crono with a image of a potato that hold sword and that would not change Chrono Tigger at all. He is just waste of party slot, and very bad silent protagonist. While Crono Cross protagonist is well devloped and he is crutial part of whole game world. Serge along with Ryu and Riou are example of silent protagonists done right. I just pitty CT fanboys who cried their asses and missed one of best RPGs , wonderfull game that holds up even today with colorful visuals and wonderfull music. Time was not so kind for CT what an irony.
Still I can remember more then from trigger, and most of them have bether story then any from trigger characters. Finaly ANY character from Cross has more backstory/lore/character then MAIN hero of trigger that who is noone, a human poatato. Crono is well know as one of worst if not THE WORST main protagonist of any RPG . What we have in ct? A frog, a cavewoman, a princess (omg), a friendzone girl, a robot (:D) and a potato. For sure their story is not hard to follow :D You are confused by CC story? So you have a problem, coz some ppl are smart enought to understand it but you dont? Like it is not a rocket science,. There are many YT that will explain it to you if you need help.
I cant see your reply but dude chill. theres no need for that I said "some" not "all" thats not what i was saying at all. How could I have not watched the video if I made that comment that doesnt even make sense wth
no need for what? i was defending my position in the video after your comment. i'm pretty chill. the though implies a contradictory statement to the claim i made in my video, that's why i asked if you watched my video as to ascertain the exact wording of the sentence your comment is referencing. no idea where my comment went. either way i appreciate it!
Well no in my first comment I was referring to you saying in the video that the game is mostly easy/most of the bosses arent that hard thats why I said miguel is pretty much the hardest in the game for casual players so obviously i watched it or i wouldnt have said that lol
I dont know why so many people love this game so much. I found it to be just mediocre. It has some really nice graphics here and there and it isnt weak in any aspects but it was so forgettable that even though I beat it I can hardly remember anything about it other than my impression of it being underwhelming. I mean if youre looking for an RPG and you havent played this sure go ahead but I dont find it anywhere near the quality of Chrono Trigger.
dude i found you last night and watched all your reviews they are awesome. keep on pumping them out, please
I love to hear that and I really appreciate it. I'm going to have my next one out very soon.
Chrono Cross needs a HD remake I love this game.
A digital release at minimum...in all regions.
I 2nd that Joseph.
4.7.22 🥰
I love the way your reviewers are built. You show us some story, you show us some art, you explain the awesome combat, and then leave it up to us to decide how good a game is for ourselves. :D
+DreamcastGuy Thank you! I was influenced by some pretty solid reviewers ;)
And I would not give 10 to CT, that game has to much flaws, well to be honest I would give it a 8 at max but mostly coz CT is just an avarage to good RPG. Overrated as fuck btw. I like Chrono Cross better then Chrono Trigger personally..
Aaahh nice.. My favorite and the best game of all... I missed this game

Great retrospectives! Looking forward to your future videos. +1

This game is a masterpiece
haven't played it yet..
but I've been listening to the soundtrack for ages! so good!!
I LOVE this game! makes me feel kinda old watching this tho😢
Thank you! awesome review

Great Reviewer.
+MrGse1992 Wow, thank you so much! Yep, I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Great to play it again after yearsssss of being away from it.
This game is so underrated and it really deserve to be played by any JRPG fan.

Good review.

Would love to see a review of the original wild arms
+spf5Ø I plan on reviewing it eventually. I really enjoyed that game.
Great review, just need to slow down a bit. It sounded a bit like a constant run-on sentence. Thanks!
Yeah I've slowed down a bit since then - this was 3 years ago. Thanks for the comment!
Chrono Cross is pretty good, indeed.
I played this game at least 5 times just to understand this story
+Viper4ever05 I wasn't having issues with it until some of the events after the Dark Serge parts. When they started talking about Lynx being a creation and an emissary of the FATE supercomputer and referencing Lavos and Trigger's cast showed up, I had to play it again and read some external sources, lol.
I never even heard of chrono trigger when i played it, so i was completely lost lol.

Hahaha lolz... The field effect is amazing
another awesome review!
This and final fantasy 8 are my favourite ps1 rpgs.
subscribed.
also, are you interested in the shin megami tensei series? i'd be interested to see a "high level review" on it.
Thank you! And yes I am. I certainly plan on reviewing several of those. Opinions on where to start?
You should start by Nocturne since is the first Shin Megami Tensei to be released to the west (i'm not considering Persona series because to me is a completely different concept, at least P3 and P4).
High Level Reviews agreed. you should start with nocturne.
I've wanted to play this game since 2009, I don't understand why they couldn't bring it out in Europe.
i like chrono cross
the first half anyways
ive never seen anyone debate about this game though. about the concept i mean

Just subbed! Keep up the good work man :)
good review bro ^_^
The battle system reminds me on FF9
I beat chrono cross 15 years ago and it was awesome. Now they just need a remake
Update the textures and backgrounds, yes, but also add more side quests to develop more characters, like Janice, Turnip, Pip, Luccia, etc.

+Antonio Lopes Thanks!
If ever a game needed a remaster or porting to current gen its this.

That channel creates some high quality content. Even being mentioned with that group of dudes is huge to me. Thanks!
miguel and some of the end bosses are hard as fuck though
hahhaa you should have mentioned more how good the art is though
I cant see your reply but dude chill. theres no need for that

yeah no problem
