Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 9 are two games that make pre rendered backgrounds beautiful. Its considered outdated today, but it's like appreciating a painting. I wouldn't change a thing, I still prefer playing the original Chrono Cross today. Its a game that's aged really well. Took me almost 20 years to appreciate Cross, getting over the fact it wasn't Trigger took me awhile.
I never played chrono trigger But all i need to say it's that i wouldn't survived my teen years without this game and the scape it gave me, 20 years later i still listening to the soundtrack
Been meaning to play this for a while. After getting into Final Fantasy a couple years ago (especially Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X), my attention has been drawn to Chrono Cross as it seems to tackle many of the tropes I look for in videogames. Your video has convinced me, I'll play it as soon as I can!
I love how its almost twenty years since this game was released and people keep talking bout this game. I keep telling all my friends to play this game but none of them took my suggestion, oh well, their loss
A note about this game and its ending, the end music, Radical Dreamers, is actually the epilogue to the game. The lyrics are Schala's thoughts and feelings on looking for Serge. They includes lines such as "I have continued to search for you for so long, but I don't even know your name." And the even more telling lines of, "Time takes away pain and love. They are disappearing, but I remember." Right before the scene of Schala on the beach at the end, the last line is, "To reach that far away place, where I can find you." So, it adds even more emotion to the game and the English speaking version never got to see Schala's lamenting of her fading memories of her time in that alternate history, and wanting to find Serge again. I have always wondered if the translation of the rest of the game was done in a short time period and caused more plot to be lost as well.
Its true, the lyrics tells the story... although the true translation is not what u presented, here is the true translation www.animelyrics.com/game/chcross/chcrrd.htm and yes! it makes the game full of meaning and soul! Best game ever! Till we get Chrono Break! I Hope so!
THEGREATMAX Oh Yeah! Reincarnation brohter! Must be true! Alas... there is no mention of the natural law in the whole game... Maybe one day, on the true ending, on the final chapter that will be made in the future... my hope is like a flame! And it will burn strong till i see this dream come true!
This was a year to remember. Chrono Cross and Valkyrie Profile both annihilated my expectations and changed the way I viewed RPGs.

LEgend of mana was good too but historywise not nearly as stiking. Also love jade Cocoon, Vagrant Story and the odball of threads of fate (Guilty pleasure)
I *love* the Chrono series! One of the best & soooooo masterfully crafted! I enjoyed gathering all 45 playable characters! The gaming world is overdue for another Chrono title.
I started playing this game back in 2001 on the original playstation, I don't think I was into RPGS back then. I really regret it now. I might have to give it another try
for me, Xenogears tops it by a very microscopic margin but then again that game was made by the same team that made Chrono Cross so makes sense I guess
Why is it the best? Because it taught us about life, friendship, love, and death. It taught us to understand nature. And I became spiritually inclined because of this game. Lol.
I also played Cross when I was about 13 or 14. Somehow, the story just made complete sense to me at the time. The gameplay was amazing too, but that story... It was incredible! It was emotionally moving in a way that few games have ever been for me. Brought me to tears several times. It is one of maybe 3 or 4 games I remember feeling so impactful to me in terms of story. I never did play Trigger, so I always felt the dislike of Cross by comparison were unfair, since they're only tangentially related. But I have nothing against Trigger at all, just never had a SNES and never bothered to play it on an emulator. Anyways, great video, near perfect game.

I identify with your comment pretty much the same happened to me.
Well done! I agree, Chrono Cross was an AMAZING game. It was ultimately a little too ambitious for what they were able to release, but the size and scope of this game is something you just don't find anymore. I'm going to go start up my most recent playthrough again!
Dude, this is one of my all time favorite games. I played it *to death* when I was a kid. Such fond memories. I loved trying to collect all of the characters in the game. Definitely recommend playing it if you never got the chance.
Omg dude, we’d be friends in real life with you name dropping BOTH those games. I absolutely loved those games and they definitely made an impact to me and my life. 👍
Story and characters and amazing music aside, what I remember most about this game is the blue of everything. The sky, the sea ... it really does feel like a beautiful place.
Yeah, for me maybe the best and most beautiful jrpg of all time in terms of looks. Not to mention unique places, dragoons, characters. Chrono Cross have great style, atmosphere, soundtrack, battle system, story, its 11/10 for me.
Loved the video DT, the mic issues were barely noticeable. It's always fun hearing about games I missed as a kid, glad the game still holds up and the nostalgia hasn't been lost. Keep up the good work.
Awesome game. Biggest issue was what they did to Lucca - She deserved a much better story than an orphanage and fiery death. She was a genius whose inventions were the seeds of everything we saw in the eventual future.
@@SmashingSnow no there was more but it's been so long since I played it that I don't remember much after that. Just that there was too many characters, story was bad, and I got a huge migraine from playing it.
@Jude Ceant Funnily that's the exact reason i love chrono cross. It reminded me of pokemon, with all the characters you can collect. I guess everyone has their own preferences.
Hi Downward Thrust, hope you are well. Thank you for the footage and the comments provided. Chrono Cross is an amazing game which has a big meaning for myself as the game helped me to became the person I am now. Love the game and I hope there will be a remastered version soon. Best regards
Very well stated! I was a bit older when this came out but I share equally fond memories of it. Chrono Cross felt like everything *right* about JRPGs at that time, when a lot of derivative stuff like Legend of Dragoon was coming out: deep combat system, amazing production & music, lots to explore, actual parseable English (unlike some of the earlier Squaresoft stuff), a "new game plus" that mattered, and a weirdly melancholy story. I loved it. I think part of the nostalgia for me is that this also happened to be released right before I took my first trip to Hawaii and its soundtrack just looped endlessly through my head while I was snorkeling in the coral reefs. Magical times.
finally started playing this game recently, i found the texture replacement pack that makes the graphics beautiful. such a complex and strange masterpiece.
Chrono Cross, along with Xenogears and Xenosaga Episode 3 are three of the best games I have ever played (Xenogears being my favorite, yes this is all after beating Chrono Trigger more times than I can count). I've played a lot of games the past 25 years and even after all this time, there is nothing that has ever topped those experiences for me. I'm just happy they're starting to finally get the love that they deserve after being forgotten and neglected for so many years...
Hey guys, huge apologies for some of the microphone feedback noises during the middle and end of the video. You probably won't notice it unless you're wearing headphones though. My microphone died shortly after recording the audio and I didn't catch it until after I finished. I tried to turn up the music more in this video so it'd be less noticeable. Don't ever buy an RE20 - I've had nothing but problems with this POS. I've got a new microphone on the way so that means it'll be an extra day or so before our next video. Also, you can check out my blog here: goo.gl/yiqbAA
You should do a video on the resurgence of single-player action games. Would be fun to see the disparity between EA's "single-player games are dead" comment and the massive success of single-player games such as God of War and Spiderman. Perhaps take an analytical approach and attempt to explain why players are only coming back to single player games now, after having such a multiplayer-focued previous console generation.
This was one of your best videos, for the record. Good job, man. I'm actually much more hyped to finally play it someday than I was before. My only real complaint is that FFXIII is a game where optimizing battles and strategy is your goal. With or without auto-battle, the game is actually really good combat wise. I found it kinda ironic that you praised CC for healing you after your battles so you can go all-out when XIII does that too for the exact same reason And as a related side note, it's been since about 2013 for me, but maybe FFIV should be a game you reevaluate sometime. I don't remember it being a game that is incredibly worth playing nowadays, though it be good.
I am absolutely glad you covered this game. Chrono Cross Is one of my favorite games of all time and I always love it when people give it the praise it deserves.
I'm so much a fan of Chrono trigger, my oldest daughter is named after a Chrono trigger character (Ayla). And one thing I'll say is that Chrono Cross IS a direct sequel. Sure, Chrono isn't the protagonist, but there are reoccurring characters. The two stories are definitely connected and I appreciate what they did. Like the part where you said, "Kid is a clone or something". Go back and beat Chrono trigger, specifically the updated version on PlayStation. In the final cutscene Lucca finds a Baby... In Chrono Cross, kid is known to have grown up in an orphanage.. an orphanage with a child's drawing of Lucca on the wall.. There are bits like this all throughout Chrono Cross. When I was younger, I didn't catch the ties.. having beaten them both dozens of times since then.. I can see the connections and it's a masterpiece of genius. I don't prefer the data dump at the end.. they could've done that better.. but it was still fantastic as a chrono trigger super fan.
My only issue with Chrono Cross was the story was confusing. I rewatched an hour long video explaining the story expecting I was to young to grasp it. And.... it's just as difficult to as a 30 year old to fully understand. Still one of the best OST of all time imo.
"If you forget everything you know about Chrono Trigger." That basically sums this game up for me. It might have been my favorite if I played it first, but I was hoping for more Chrono Trigger, and I got Chrono Cross.
My older sister had this game for the ps2, when I would play I usually would get confused, not get far and mess up her save, but this game has stuck with me since, and I see why now. It's such a beautiful and unique game. I'd love to see this remastered or brought to newer consoles in some way so other people can experience this fantastic game!
I also played this game on my 14-15 yo and I just remember it was awesome. I agree with you on the story, It was the best part of it. I had to replay several times climax scenes to make sure I got what was happening but if you put enough attention to every single detail then the whole story made completely sense. Absolutely a master piece.
I only played Chrono Trigger and haven't played Chrono Cross but I think your analysis was well-done enough that I could get into if I do decide to play it. Thanks DT for the analysis.
It is totally a sequel to Trigger as long as you pay 100% full attention... Which is actually super hard to do in this game, and that's why we have our dear friend Chrono Compendium!
Chrono cross is literally my favorite game of all time. The story, the graphics (for its time), the game play, the characters, everything was perfect in my eyes. I still go back and play it every so often just for nostalgia sake
This game is LEGENDARY. It's been 20 years since this was released and I still got the goosebumps whenever I watch about this game and hearing the OSTs. This is the best game by far! My Dad and I didn't like at first since I was still a little kiddo. However, as time passed by, me and my father played this and had great bonding which will always be part of my best childhood years. I really wish there's a remastered version of this. Thanks for this video, Dude. I am now 27 years old but Chrono Cross will always bring the "child at heart" side of me. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Trigger is still my favorite but I've always loved Cross. Soundtrack alone makes it a classic but the game is really good. I think when it came out people just wanted Trigger two.
It's my favorite game! Have a sub. Your criticisms are fair, the plot is really hard to figure out in it's entirety, but Terracorrupt has a great 3 part series explaining the extended lore of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross which does a much better job than the exposition dump in Cross explaining what's actually going on.
Also on a sidenote this is connected to trigger than most people not it for. biggest one was freeing Schala. There are also links tied to it with the frozen flame characters, and much more. if you take the time to investigate and explore this game it you learn so much about its connections and story.
This game is so criminally underrated. I wish it got more praise. It is still my #1 game. Still play it quite often...like right now...going into chronopolis lol Everything about this game is phenomenal
I bought this game at Micro Center in 2013 for $15 Greatest Hits edition. The cover art caught my interest as a kid especially in 2013 when I bought it as a teen. Arni Village theme blew my mind with its peaceful soundtrack; and yeah, from there, I continued to play more of it. Such a masterpiece.
My largest problem with this game is the fact that, if it stood on its own, it would be fantastic. However, it just doesn't work as a sequel to Chrono Trigger. There's just too many plot holes, like how Lucca was killed by Lynx. She was one of the most powerful beings on the planet, in all of time, and Lynx was, quite frankly, a chump. Then there's the fact that Chrono and Marle would have hunted Lynx down to the end of time to put him down for revenge. Yet they are only ever seen as doll-like plot devices that got shoe-horned into an otherwise unrelated game. It's like Square created this amazing game, and decided to slap the "Chrono" name on it 1/2 way through production, which kills it for me.
The only jrpg I got into and almost finished. I have tried to get into every classic jrpg. Then I just tried this because I liked Chrono Trigger. I am saved in the last palace now.
I'm one of the very few people who loved Cross a little bit more than Trigger I love both games immensely, however Cross is, to me, the ever so slightly better more immersive and special experience. I was obsessed with Chrono Cross back in high school, especially after I got the best possible ending on new game+
To be honest i dont even remember a single character in this game but remember all in chrono trigger. Btw i grew up playing both. I liked CC music but all i remember was "come hither" from that big ass frog and one of the chicks always saying she will kick your arse... i need to play it again as an adult to grasp and refresh. :)
A great video, and actually my favorite game of ALL time, despite all it's flaws. I will nitpick about one thing however. Chrono Cross isn't strictly about time. It involves plenty of time travel plot points that are responsible for the set up of the game, but it's more accurate to say it's about multiverse theory.
Chrono cross has one of the best Soundtracks in gaming history
As much as I hate the Game, I agree with you

I also played this game on my 14-15 yo and I just remember it was awesome. I agree with you on the story, It was the best part of it. I had to replay several times climax scenes to make sure I got what was happening but if you put enough attention to every single detail then the whole story made completely sense. Absolutely a master piece.
this is one of the best game for me... i can listen to the music all day, and i feel like i am taken to another world...
I only played Chrono Trigger and haven't played Chrono Cross but I think your analysis was well-done enough that I could get into if I do decide to play it. Thanks DT for the analysis.
Finally, chrono cross, my favorite rpg, still playin it till now 😘
I love this "Epic Game, Beautifully Made!
Please do a remake of this game Sony and Square Enix!
If this got a remake I would definitely get it and I’m not a fan of remakes it’s a class game 👍🏻
Agreed . Best graphics at that time. Best gameplay. Best storyline. Best and various characters and development. Best music . Best dragon summons!
most under rated RPG of the generation. It has the best musical score in a game though you cant take that away from Chrono Cross.
It is the best game of all time. Pure art
It is totally a sequel to Trigger as long as you pay 100% full attention... Which is actually super hard to do in this game, and that's why we have our dear friend Chrono Compendium!
Yasonuri Mitsuda. That is all
the music in this game is just heavenly.
Remake incoming, Chrono Cross stans eating this year babyyyy
Chrono cross is literally my favorite game of all time. The story, the graphics (for its time), the game play, the characters, everything was perfect in my eyes. I still go back and play it every so often just for nostalgia sake
Chrono Cross will always be a part of my life. :) To all fans hoping there's a remake sometime, I'm with you 100%.
I love the concept, gameplay, art, music. Ahhhh.. perfect!!!
The combat system is one of the most funny and clever ever.
Trigger is still my favorite but I've always loved Cross. Soundtrack alone makes it a classic but the game is really good. I think when it came out people just wanted Trigger two.
no doubt this is the best
im hoping we remake this game
It's my favorite game! Have a sub. Your criticisms are fair, the plot is really hard to figure out in it's entirety, but Terracorrupt has a great 3 part series explaining the extended lore of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross which does a much better job than the exposition dump in Cross explaining what's actually going on.
Chrono Cross is a legendary game. I replayed Chrono Cross over 5 times when it released. I didnt know I was playing one the last game of its kind :(
I thought it was kind of a direct sequel cause chrono, lucca, marle, and schala are in it
Cross is extremely linked to Trigger. If you understand the story of Cross well , you’ll know how much of a true sequel it is
Hands down my favorite all time video game. My only complaint is Harle's limited playability.
Also on a sidenote this is connected to trigger than most people not it for. biggest one was freeing Schala. There are also links tied to it with the frozen flame characters, and much more. if you take the time to investigate and explore this game it you learn so much about its connections and story.
this bring a lot of nostalgia... 😢
This is my favorite video you've ever uploaded. I would love to see more look backs on your favorite games in the future
This game is so criminally underrated.
I wish it got more praise. It is still my #1 game.
Still play it quite often...like right now...going into chronopolis lol
Everything about this game is phenomenal
4:14 Lol, the elemental field effect looks like a hardboiled egg here...
I agree completely. Still one of the best games ever. And one of the few RPGs that is still as fun to play through as it was when it first came out.
Remember kids, if you chose to save kid...you're fuckin up lol
That game was a masterpiece! From storyline to soundtracks, everything is magical... and now feels nostalgic.
How did you capture this footage? The PSOne Classic version on PS3 is all pixelated for me.
I played this when I was in high school. I did not understand the story. Currently replaying the remaster.
Chrono Cross is my best game, my childhood....
