Beautiful doesn't even do it justice. . Wow
In the merry month of June from me home I started
Left the girls of Tuam nearly broken hearted
Saluted Father dear, kissed me darling mother
Drank a pint of beer, me grief and tears to smother
Then off to reap the corn, leave where I was born
Cut a stout blackthorn to banish ghosts and goblins
A brand new pair of brogues, rattlin' o'er the bogs
Frightenin' all the dogs on the rocky road to Dublin
One two three four five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah!
In Mullingar that night I rested limbs so weary
Started by daylight me spirits bright and airy
Took a drop of the pure
Keep me heart from sinking
That's the Paddy's cure whenever he's on drinking
To see the lassies smile, laughing all the while
At me curious style, 'twould set your heart a bubblin'
An' asked if I was hired, wages I required
'Till I was nearly tired of the rocky road to Dublin
One two three four five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah!
In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity
To be soon deprived a view of that fine city
Well then I took a stroll, all among the quality
Bundle it was stole, all in a neat locality
Something crossed me mind, when I looked behind
No bundle could I find upon me stick a wobblin'
Enquiring for the rogue, said me Connaught brogue
Wasn't much in vogue on the rocky road to Dublin
One two three four five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah!
From there I got away, me spirits never falling
Landed on the quay, just as the ship was sailing
The Captain at me roared, said that no room had he
When I jumped aboard, a cabin found for Paddy
Down among the pigs, played some funny rigs
Danced some hearty jigs, the water round me bubbling
When off Holyhead wished meself was dead
Or better far instead
On the rocky road to Dublin
One two three four five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah!
The boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed
Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it
Blood began to boil, temper I was losing
Poor old Erin's isle they began abusing
"Hurrah me soul!" says I, me shillelagh I let fly
Some Galway boys were nigh and saw I was a hobble in
With a loud "Hurray!" joined in the affray
We quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin
One two three four five
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah!
Hunt the Hare and turn her down the rocky road
And all the way to Dublin, Whack fol lol le rah!
Whack fol lol le rah!
Whack fol lol le rah!
I play this song at gigs…it’s a mouthful! Great to hear Lankums awesome version!
I have not stopped listening to lankum since I clapped ears on to them . Utterly stunning . Each morning I have a ritual - coffee in a pot , into the garden bare feet . The live long day on headphones and I sit on the grass and listen to it all the way through . My day is set up and I’m good to go . Charged with the spirit of Ireland , a mix of fear , hope , pain , sadness , joy , anger and gentleness , fight, stillness and all that encompass ones life journey . Accepting of the lot and ready for anything . Firm like a rock in the ground and the grace of the music to keep one grounded through out . Thank you lankum I fucking love you .
Jimney Sweep Best UA-cam comment ever. I'm with ya.
Brian Wright ✌️amazing aren’t they !! Here’s to lankum 🍻
Lovely little piece there jimney. I wonder are you in ireland. Im irish and am away from home now. Moved for love and how i grieve for all ive left behind, language, music and all. Thank you lankum and everyone who keeps digging deep into their hearts and souls to tell the stories that matter and hold us together
Ronan Larkin I’m English but Ireland was my home for nearly thirty years until recently . Had to move due to family issue . But I pine for Ireland , it’s in my heart and it’s a whole different spirit there . I feel more Irish than English because I have lived so long there . I feel at home there , it suits my spirit and soul more . I will return but lankum keeps my feeling close to Ireland . They really express the raw Irish spirit that I love so much . That I need surrounding me . I think only the Irish understand it those that have spent most of thier lives there . It truly is a magical place , with all its flaws too , that all places have . But something very special about the Irish land and people . It’s good you found love , though I am not surprised you still yearn for homeland
Thanks jimney, alll the best
That disarming sense of sanctity in each of their performance. Speechless.
I may be 63 but I love this band so much. They perform what on the surface are "simple" trad Irish tunes with extraordinary sublety and harmonic complexity.
Christopher Jaques I’m a mere babby at 60 but good music still stirs my heart and blood as much as ever! 💚
And I may be 64...and totally agree. I have been having a bit of a low day, tuned into this and now my spirits are lifted. I fecking love them.
good music knows no age
They are insanely good. The passion in each song
What’s your age got to do with it? ..... the music is our unique soul and spirit, a gift from above, a lifelong burning that won’t be quenched
Radie is a once on a generation vocalist. Haunting, local, beautiful
Just an absolutely stunning interpretation of WILD ROVER. Lankum are ridiculously good. If the Irish are the people of smiling eyes, of laughter, of good luck and the craic, Lankum reminds us of the reality of Irish experience. Every bright light casts a dark, dark shadow.
Based on the original melody. John Faulkner's version also worth a listen. Even has the harmonium. From "Kind Providence".
Irish is bright and dark together
I'll check it out. Fanks!
Irish is addiction, depression, mental illness, desolation. Irish is warm laughter, sublime spirituality, wonderful humour, inclusive joy. Irish is everything.
My second contribution. It takes a very rare talent to play 3 different instruments all at one go including from a sitting position on the floor. And including playing one with her feet whilst playing the concertina with her hands. Yet that is precisely what Radie does in tracks 2 and 3 in this amazing little cameo concert. And sings her guts and heart out. Her fellow band members back her to the hilt. Utterly mesmerising and out of this world. Brilliant.
Absolutely amazing. I saw them live in All Together Now Festival. It was hauntingly beautiful
this has got to be one of my favorite videos on this platform. I love the way that the Rocky Road and Bear Creek bleed into each other. The continous drone is sublime.
Oh how I love “the Wild Rover”… haunting, sorrow, and beautiful.. my favourite song ….
What about their 'Hares on the Mountain'?
You should check out John Faulkner's version too. Based on the original, like this one.
The Wild Rover reclaimed, sublime
The most evocative female voice i have heard since Lisa Gerrard. Stunning!!
Sweet baby Jesus this is good! What a band!
The best baby to be fare
@@jlawlor7560holy Mother of Divine Jesus and all the saints in Heaven, they're a grand little outfit indeed.
...and the little donkey.
@@dermur68 i think they ate that to celebrate the birth
Where have these been and why have I only just found them just wow the lass is just a dream super talented
Has anybody EVER heard a voice as weirdly wonderful as Radie's? Slightly slightly off key but all the more unique and magical because of that. Simply marvellous and truly unique.
I love her so much!
Have you ever heard of Montaigne? She is another one of my favorite vocalists.
Reminds me a lot of Norma Waterson.
She ain't off key at all. You'd know if she was because the harmony would sound wrong when the other voices come in, but it sounds fine.
It's the irish way of singing perhaps? Always jumping up and down the notes...
Hi I didn't mean she was off key due to poor singing. The very opposite. Her slight off tone perfectly harmonises and indeed makes her brilliant. So I was complimenting Radie absolutely not criticising her. She is fabulous.
unbelievable - the saturated acoustic mix islike liquid metal - the harmony and instrumentation is genius.
My lovely wife came running up the stairs saying that I must listen to Lankum. ( She had found them on her own pc) So I had a look. Mesmerized from the first note. What a wonderfully talented group of people. Looking forward to many hours of musical pleasure , and maybe see them live.
I stumbled upon them watching Tv, a repeat of their Jools Holland performance (I’ve not been able to find it on the web since). Steve, the same reaction I had. Mezzzzzmerized. I’ve devoured all they’ve put out now. My fave is their cover of Old Main Drag. Do yourself a favor and watch it right now

This is the other song they performed on Jools' Cant find it now but this is just as good
Amazing. Best Irish band in many years... maybe since Planxty.
And you'd be right......
Grate
best irish ban in 2 generations. utterly genius
I wasn’t thinking of Planxty....but you are spot on
Planxty were a trad folk band. Planxty were 40 years you think Lankum are the best since then!!
This band are on another level to anybody l have heard in many years ..There music hits the depths of my soul......
When I came across this band and began to listen to this song I was stunned, I was in shock and I forgot to breath for about 2 minutes, I am totally amazed with the magic of their most brilliant playing, singing and the stories to tell. During my like I got to see many of the very best band in this world playing live including the greatest rocking bands of times Thin Lizzy & Rory Gallagher and his boys, Lankum set along side the very greats of music and long may the continue to make and play their music and bring us into their mistic.
Something so haunting about them, sheer brilliance
By far my favorite Irish group. Been following Irish music for 40 years. This band has a fresh interpretation of this musical tradition
This band is incredible, came across their music during the 1st lockdown (thanks to Cillian Murphy who selected “the pride of petravore” for one of his limited edition playlists) and I’ve been hooked ever since !
The stomping sound at 08:44 gave me goosebumps. Everything about these guy is brilliant, from Radie’s incredible voice, to the haunting harmonies from the Lynch boys to Cormac’s impeccable tempo!
Sláinte is táinte lads!
the way those stomps come through in this performance might make it my favorite version of this song! goosebumps each time
Lankum the number one "contraption band" of our time
My 4th comment. The more I listen to these guys the more their talent shines like the stars. Voice harmony and instrument playing is just absolutely amazing and perfection. You don't need to dress like Next dummies to be geniuses. Love them.
I just played Didgeridoo to The Wild Rover.. if this band ever comes to Australia I’d love to play live for you… Irish Aboriginal music yet to be discovered…! I especially loved playing at the end with the instrumental section. It was lovely to join the song..
I'd love to hear that
This is one of the most beautiful things on this platform. Thank you Lankum!
Music that restores the faith in humanity
I can’t stop listening to this. Wild Rover moves me. That violin 🤯✌🏽💚🌻
Not often I get on here and have no words to describe how amazing the music is. But that’s simply the case here. So amazing almost its own genre
Wow. Just wow.
GREAT STUFF
Brilliance, U2 need to really sit up & take note & get inspiration from this truly amazing band ;-D
Such an amazing band
You Tube recommended this for me and I'm glad they did. As I learned this is traditional Irish music. I put this in my list of music
Thank you You Tube
Proud to be Irish listening to this. It's pure gold.
Beautiful soul boosting music!
Pure spirit!
I love this group with a passion
FINALLY!!!!!BEAR CREEK!!!!!
That's just magical.

Lankum: again and again and again. Haunting.

Happy days ,hopefully to return.
keep up the good work..all the best.
I learned about Lankum a while ago, but only last week I was ready for it. And it hit very deep. I hope to see you guys play live one day
I love the way the lead vocal is support to the harmonies in the Rocky Road. Really works.
Fantastic vocal blend, and completely authentic Irish folk feel and vibe.
che meraviglia!👏👏
Love this band. One of the best shows I have ever attended, can't wait to see them again when all this big crap is over with.
we can hope!
i was at the vicars street show in january 2020 in dublin. one of the best, if not the best show i've ever seen. then i flew from northern california to new york in march to catch them there. i would never miss a chance to see them play. they are a once in a lifetime experience. they are completely fucking brilliant and i don't even know if they themselves know how much of an impact they will leave on irish music for decades to come.
Seen them live in Dublin few weeks ago, with Mogwai supporting. They had unbelievable energy on their home turf.
Today back to Dublin for Dropkick Murphys.
Finally good gigs summer time.
Bloody hell that is some line up to be seeing live!! Good on you - hope you had a helluva time. Yet to see Lankum but an all time highlight was DKM doing The Fields of Athenry live.
@@thediesel4475 Thanks man, I've been listening to DKM for 20 years, to finally see them was an absolute honour.
But the absolute superstars of this year's lineup was Rammstein. Dear god, they blew me away, you could hear the concert from 12 miles away.
Radie Peat, incredibly beautiful and extremely talented
leaves me breath- and speechless - fantastico
Same here ...
love these guys ! reminds me of that Planxty flaver
Beautiful music
Perhaps perfect Beltane music.
Thanks Mike.

I literally just discovered this version of the song (watching the Jack Charlton Documentary) absolutely Speechless. Amazing 🙌
I'm very grateful to hear and see such great singing and guitar work!
I wish I was 1/2 as good at 1 thing as these guys are at a lot of things
Beautiful come back please
Phenomenal ❤
Radie playing the harmonium and her unbelievable voice is like hot dark chocolate laced with whiskey and treacle running down your throat.
There is something about the frequencies pouring out here that makes the very marrow in my bones vibrate. I can't give it over.
It’s the drones.
Wild momentum. Beautiful.
Goosebumps everywhere. Beyond amazing!
Oh my lord! That was great! Wow
omg 🥰😭🥰
BEST!
I have just heard this group on John Kelly's choice. Why have I not heard this before ye are brilliant.
Wish I could see this band live in France… I love them so much!

I regret not seeing them when they were in Boston. Who knows if I’ll have another chance.
They are so great.
So damn good.

I would love to see them recreate The Pogues' Medley (The Recruiting Sergeant/Rocky Road to Dublin/Galway Races).
Awesome
Fckin' ace. Thanks.
❤️❤️❤️
Incredible.
The blood of Ireland flows through your music ....
Wow !
Magic.....
Rocky Road to Dublin. Kinda slow, but smooth with the sweet singing. Love the small pipes.
