  • Hey guys,
    Today’s video is a talk-though on why I do NOT relax my hair at home! There are plenty of tutorials on UA-cam detailing how to relax your hair, how to texlax your hair, how to relax your 4c hair… the list goes on.
    HOWEVER, as a friend and ally in this relaxed hair game, I simply cannot recommend that you relax your hair at home.
    On the flip side, I completely understand that life is not always ideal and not everyone’s circumstances will permit them to get a professional relaxer. So, I will ALSO be sharing some tips for relaxing at home for those of you who do not have the option to get a salon relaxer.
    Sound good?! Good, let’s get into it!
    Oh! And in case you wanna schedule a salon visit with my hair stylist, here is her information:

    Hey babes, I hope this vid provides some added perspective when deciding whether to self-relax. For those of you who DO self-relax, how did you learn? How long have you been doing it? And for those who don't, what value have you found in going to a professional? Let's encourage one another! Xoxo

    My hair is thicker now that I relax myself. I went back to my old stylist after about 3 years ,just for a hair cut,. One of the first things she said was " your hair got so thick, what have you been doing"? I wanted to say " not coming to see you lol

    No offense to hairstylists but applying a relaxer isn’t rocket science. They wouldn’t sell at home kits if it was impossible. It’s like telling people never to change their own oil in their car. If you do your research it’s very doable- don’t just jump in without doing the research. And lots of us have had bad salon experiences. I think doing strand tests with shed hair, practicing with conditioner- that’s all awesome. It might take some work to perfect technique but it’s possible.

      Well you have to go very fast and the back of your head... it aint easy sister. They sell relaxers at home and if you have help from any friend or family or someone is just applying the relaxer for you it gets easier

      Lolo Future I think this a good conversation. Thanks for sharing. I agree in the sense that yes, it’s do-able. You don’t need a degree to do it, but it is a learned practice. Someone can’t just pick up the skill simply because there are instructions in box. And your errors can lead to permanent damage. That’s my caution to the women who do not have the experience or confidence to do it successfully on their own, ESPECIALLY for women who wanna texlax. Just type texlaxing in UA-cam and you’ll see women’s horror stories. But thank you for watching, love! We need healthy dialogue on this.

      Lolo Future word up. I was doing my own relaxer before I went natural five years ago, and doing my own ‘texlax’ again now. It’s like second nature. Takes much practice but I have yet to find a stylist that isn’t rushing and tearing thru my hair. I have no breakage or scalp burns and I use ORS with lye! It’s not for amateurs for sure.

      True! Besides, many of these 'professionals' in salons ARE NOT good at their craft. Having a license and working inside a salon does NOT mean you're good at what you do. These salon workers will MESS YOU UP. (if u have a good one, then Great👍...stick with em).

    You make good points. However I trust my self more then a stylist. I'm 6 years natural now. But I had really bad experiences at salons getting relaxers. They over processed my hair every time! I love your tips tho. I'm going to try it out bc I want to go back to a relaxer one day.

      Dominique Allen Girllll I’ve had some bad stylists too so I get you. I kissed many frogs before I found the one. Yes, please try some of the tips and let me know! I love having relaxed hair so I’m hoping all goes well for you. Good luck! ❤️

    Decades of going to the salon ( losing half a day)and I always ended up with over processed hair with burns and scabs included. Long hair but I always had to cut at some point due thinness once I got bra strap. Many times! After almost 7 years natural I decided to self relax. 2 years later - No burn or scabs. I use exactly the same lye relaxer ( every 16 to 20 weeks) and a timer to achieve the same consistent texture. I add nothing to the relaxer. I make my parts in advance and twist starting at where the relaxer shouldn’t past so I can move fast. Not sure if going into a salon would achieve the exact same results if they use a different relaxer or change from my 2 year process. But I agree. If you find a excellent stylist that is awesome and way better.

    • @AlexisKimberlyy
      @AlexisKimberlyy  4 роки тому +1

      Chestarr21 Batson Great points, thank you for sharing! I think a couple things you mentioned are extremely important to note: you clearly did your research before applying your relaxer. Or, at the very least, you developed a great practice overtime. You pre-made sections, created twists, set a timer, etc. All these things helped contribute to getting great results. However, there’s a large population of beginners who haven’t taken the same steps as you, who’ve ruined their hair trying to relax on their own. And so, I don’t think it’s fair for someone (not talking about you) to say that self-relaxing is easy and anyone can do it, because there are plenty of women who can’t do it well. The second point is that you’re right, not every hairstylist is great. But with any professional you trust to make decisions for you (doctors, teachers, dentists, etc.), sometimes you have to kiss some frogs to find the one. My hair was over-processed for years before I found my hairstylist. Overall, I think we’re both saying the same thing, but I just want to highlight your great practice while also noting that self-relaxing is not for everyone. Great conversation!

    • @chestarr21batson46
      @chestarr21batson46 4 роки тому

      AlexisKimberlyy Absolutely! One mistake and you could have some serious damage. It’s not something I chose to do lightly and I would never make a change to the formula. I would rather use a mild then try to dilute the relaxer personally. if I was that concerned I would find a professional. My stylist did my relaxer for 30 years before retiring. After that point I found some good ones and some pretty bad ones ( for various reasons including one appointment that went from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm- will never forget that one) who did more damage than good. If I find one who I think will value my time and my concerns seriously I’m in all the way!

    Last three 'licensed professionals' I had gone to when relaxed did they exact same thing u mentioned i.e. one side over processed , in other spots underprocessed..just all over the place. A LICENSED COSMOLOGIST did that. So .... You can't go by that alone. ( They past the exam good enough to get a license but they don't all know what they're doing. Many don't care about your hair. You're just another number for $$$$$$).

    Very informative I have been relaxing my hair for three years now and it has been a challenge but looking back I would have started earlier and would never gone to a professional. Most of them don’t educate their clients on anything so far I’ve learnt so much about my hair and I now know how to take care of it properly. Trimming, relaxing and proper maintenance I’m texlaxed now and my hair is very thick, long and healthy. 😊

      That’s awesome! You were successfully able to get over the challenges that come with doing your own relaxers. Unfortunately that’s not the ending for many women. But learning your hair is key to any hair journey. Thanks for watching!

      medaher f yes the first time I relaxed my hair the front part didn’t take properly but I managed to work through it by putting protective styles and stuff.... after that I watched so many relaxer videos so I can better prepare myself for the next relaxer then I made a decision to go textlax as it’s healthier because it doesn’t completely break up the protein bonds in your hair ... long story short it’s important to know your hair, what it needs and how to maintain it😊 thanks for the comment and welcome 🙏

    I decided to start doing my own relaxers because I think it is close to impossible to find a good professional once you move away from a certain area. I only WISH I had started doing it sooner. No one cares about your hair as much as you do. I was starting from a bad hair situation anyways when I was learning (thanks to a "trusted" hairstylist) so after a couple not-so-great results, I've been doing great! I'll be mid-back length in no time and my hair so much healthier.

  • @ennm130

    I've been relaxing my own hair at home for 2 years now, every 10 to 12 weeks. No regrets. I get consistent results every time. BSL hair. Having a three way mirror is the key. That and the liberal application of vaseline on my scalp and on my already relaxed hair before the application process.

    • @AlexisKimberlyy
      @AlexisKimberlyy  4 роки тому +1

      Emily Maina Sounds like you’ve got it down pat! Thanks for sharing. I think the overall point here is that it shouldn’t be automatically assumed that everyone can self-relax. It takes good practices, which it seems like you’ve done, to ensure that you continue to get consistent and healthy results. Unfortunately, your story is not everyone’s story and some people really need a GOOD professional, emphasis on good. Thanks for watching and for your suggestions! Xoxo

    You are so educated on the topic. I remind you all sisters that if youre stretching a lot more than you are used to, you should remind your stylist to lay the relaxer for a little longer this time. More over, I think it was clear enough in the video but women have to realise that one relaxer goes wrong, your whole length is ruined, you ruin your hair at the top at the root and this can be dramatic. Thanks for the video.

      JA C SA Thank you so much! You make excellent points and I will be taking your advice for my next touch-up. My new growth is wild right now. I've done both but currently relax myself. I do plan on going back to the salon but that's only because I'm tired of doing it myself. I believe it's possible for a lot of people to self relax with proper research and if you're comfortable with and know your hair. I am one who believes in salon quality products as well as relaxers. I use mizani to relax my own hair and there's a lot of steps I take when doing so before and after. I have enough texture without being bone straight or texlaxed and I believe it's because of the relaxer I use. I also use majority salon hair products from the actual salon and I find that has made a huge difference in my hair vs when I mainly used drugstore. I learned a lot about relaxers from my stylist who is a white girl and not to say race makes a difference but I know people that would never have a non black stylist do their relaxer. Great video!!

      Kalisha J Yes!!! So many good points you make. Hahaha my first curly perm wayyy back in the day was with a white woman and she did that! 😂😂 So I completely feel ya. But you’re so right. So much research, practice and GOOD quality products really contribute to good self-relaxer results. You can’t just pick up a box and do it yourself without loads of preparation. It sounds like your hair is doing well, so that is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing! This will help the next woman figure out what she wants to do. Best of luck on your journey babe. This is very good advice. I thought about it and I talk to two beauticians and they told me not to do it because I can’t see the back of my head. It’s very tempting to put one in but I’m not. I rather deal with the new growth until I can get to the salon. Also I was told to use a flat iron on the new growth to make it more manageable.

I have super thick 4c hair normally with crazy shrinkage and managing it has been work,i also enjoy experimenting with hair styles and colour and my thic 4c texture has made my options limited, i have been natural for almost 3 years,my hair is very low maintenance and grows out pretty fast,ive not really had bad hair experiences besides a little breakage when i was little.Thanks for all the great hair advice I'm a new subbie and actually learnt about texlaxing from your channel!

    You're very right. I started doing my own hair many years ago, because I couldn't find a good hairdresser back in the day. They all used to over lap and over process my fine texture hair. It worked out well for a while then 1 under process on my part and I'm back to breakage ville because of the two different textures. This happened a couple times. So I have to be cutting my hair off as it grows out. I think I've found a good hairdresser (she was highly recommended), so I will be doing my next relaxer professionally as I can't be bother with the headache of doing my own hair.

Even though my cousin relaxes hers and her daughter’s hair, my mom was saying I have a lot of hair and a professional is used to working with it and my cousin or my mom might not be able to get through my head fast enough.
