    In this video we look at many types of natural moss from the forest floor!
    Many types of moss exist in the Canadian forests and each of them produce moss spores that will spread their seed amongst the forest floor. This natural type of seed dispersal has enhancing the wide varieties still found in both the mature and young forests here in Canada and elsewhere around the world.

    Thanks Brad, I think a moss lawn would be too cool! I would love to see that! I have planted a lot at the side of our home here in the shade, between the rocks, and it seems to work well as long as it is not too direct light. However, some moss and lichen don't mind a lot of sun. Thanks for watching Brad!

    Hi Gulllalai! Thanks for the comment! I am glad you enjoyed the video! It is very nice to hear you talk of the resemblance to the mountains. That was my intention and what I found when working with the plants, it really does take the scale down while looking so large! I will have a terrarium m video out, while incorporating some lichen. And a also have a lichen video on it own eventually, have some great footage of lichen! Thanks again!

    I'd like to take a moment to voice my appreciation for your video, JeremiahJohnson84. You're clear and concise with your instructions, never skipping a step, and even took the time to add on-screen labels when discussing moss names, always a helpful feature to the interested novice. I could go on and on about your ability to speak well in front of the camera; everything is a smooth comfortable transition, which makes for an excellent learning environment on my side of the screen. It's easy to see you have an intricate understanding of your craft by the fun little bits of background information and tiny, helpful, details garnishing your instructions. Not to forget, you're simply excellent with terrariums, they all looked beautiful. It's not often you discover someone who can offer a quality educational experience with a serene, comfortable, knowledgeable air, especially with video as a medium. So kudos to you, please keep up the good work! I do hope you keep your word with a new video every Wednesday, I'll be sure to keep a look out from now on. :]

    Wow, that would have been a great find. I find myself slowing down a lot when walking and hiking lately as the moss is like a forest in itself, so much life within the moss and small rock crops and decaying trees that have fallen.. Where about are the mountains? Here in canada on the west coast, there are some sweet spots! Thanks for the comment! Great channel btw! Enjoy!

    That was awesome, thanks! I subscribed, and am very much looking forward to your how-to video, and the one about lichens. I've been working on an herb terrarium and would like to incorporate some moss, but I'm still not sure what type to go with, or if it matters what species I use, and whether or not it needs special treatment after being harvested from the wild. Quite fun learning about it. Also, fellow Southern-Ontarian here, hello! ^^

    • @JeremiahJohnson84
      @JeremiahJohnson84  10 років тому

      Hey and thanks for watching! That herb terrarium has me thinking! I may need to include that into my 'how to video'. If it were me, I would use thyme in the low areas, and then maybe some cilantro and basil being cut short in other areas with some moss. What a sweet idea you have...Maybe a bit more maintenance than the traditional terrarium but the payoff sounds tasty....keep me updated..

    Greetings Jere,
    I love this vid man! very helpful, I'm trying to learn this and would love to get details on growing Lichen with success. I have had nothing but failure. The lichen I have tried was bright yellow and went brown and got covered with mould. I know I used high alkaline water, and that was likely a culprit. Either way, any tips would be greatly appreciated! Also wondering about how to plant these seeds once you have stored them, and how long should we store them before they are ready?
    Best,
    Greg

    How exactly do you plant the seeds? Just like a normal plant?

  • @JeremiahJohnson84
    @JeremiahJohnson84  11 років тому

    Great question, literally, sow them over decaying moss! IF you plant it directly onto peat moss, and lightly sprinkle the seeds is, and find a nice dark, cool spot, the spores will have no problem germinating! I will follow up on this video, with another showing the planting process! Thanks for watching!

    Hi, I live here in Singapore, and many of my terrariums don't seem to live very long. They typically die out a few months later. I'm guessing the temperatures in the north are probably more suited for many mosses. Here, the daily temperature can reach up to 30 deg celsius. Plus the mosses you have aren't a common sight here, but I would really want some. Do you have any idea why my terrariums aren't as healthy as yours? Perhaps the potting medium? Perhaps temperatures? Or simply other climatic factors beyond my control? thanks. -Nathan

      With terrarium s you do have to water them occasionally but only every couple months and very little more water unless you have a extremely well self substained terrarium

    I am gathering fauna/items for my first terrarium. After gathering seed/spores, do you have to let them DRY? How do u plant them?? I'll look for a video from you, but didn't know if you'd answer the "dry" question ! Thanks.

    Hey Jeremiah, how do I get lichen instead? Like the one you have there, it's so pretty.

      vaporeonusedscald Thanks for your question! Lichen is pretty, and very awesome! It only needs light and air to live! IT can transform the rocky landscape into a colourful landscape with new depth and contrast. It gives new life and ecosystems to rocky outcrops and baron landscapes. I was fortunate enough to live in an area of Ontario Canada, that has numerous varieties of lichen, moss and other small growing plants native to the area. Look in areas that are undisturbed from development away from the city and its heavy footprints and walking paths. When you seek...you find...explore my friend, it will be waiting for you! thanks for your question JJ!
