    A few years ago we boarded our plane at SNA after a trip to Disneyland. And as we were boarding the pilot gets on and says, "Folks, we don't want to rush you, but Air Force 1 is due to arrive at Vegas about the same time we are. We'd sure like to beat them in so we aren't stuck in the air, so if you could all take your seats as quickly as possible we'll get on our way." Everyone kind of paused for a second and then settled in. Was the craziest takeoff I've had in a commercial jet. When we hit altitude the pilot pushed over hard enough that we got a little bit of negative g. I'm sure he wasn't allowed to go flat out, but I'm also sure he requested to push his speed as much as he could because it was the quickest SNA - LAS run I've ever been on. "We're beginning our descent into Vegas and it looks like we're going to be one of the last handfull of planes allowed to land before Air Force 1 shuts down the airspace. Glad we could get you to Vegas on time."

    • @mtnbiker432
      @mtnbiker432 4 роки тому +76

      SNA also has one of the steepest take off angles in the country so that feeling was probably the normal feeling we all have when leaving SNA. They have to rise quickly and cut the engines so the rich people in Newport don't get angry. After getting used to that takeoff angle, normal takeoffs feel so slow and shallow!

      @@mtnbiker432 Yeah, I've flown out of SNA a number of times and it always is a rush. This just felt more so. Maybe it was just a psychological thing because we were "racing" to beat AF1 in. That's likely all it was. Either way, it was a fun flight. :D

      I still feel that AF-1 could easily land at ANY military base (especially Air Force) in the area. All military bases have landing strips. The POTUS doesn't have to be concerned with ground transportation or collecting his bags, etc. There would be no inconvenience to the flying public. No lost connections. No missed business meetings.

      One MercilessMing there are a lot of air force stations/bases that share runways with commercial. PDX is one of those. and also a major hub. I could be wrong but I believe Travis air force base is the "closest" base where AF1 would've been able to land that's not also servicing commercial flights. point is though that the air force does share a number of airports with the commercial aviation industry.

    • @onemercilessming1342
      @onemercilessming1342 7 років тому +9

      Jeffery Antioquia, While some military facilities may share runways with commercial airports, it doesn't change the fact that AF-1 could EASILY utilize a military base (where security can be much tighter). Instead, thousands of people flying commercially were impacted by a POTUS who, apparently, has little regard for the people whom he reputably serves (not lords over).

      One MercilessMing+ Air Force One can and does land at military instillation's, but handling not only his aircraft but the several other aircraft's that follow (his motorcade, vehicles, crew, secret service etc) is easier when landing commercial. A military airport most likely won't be as close to his final destination and the route the president takes would have to be secured, which means the secret service will be closing and securing highways and surface streets to ensure they're safe. It's an inconvenience, but one I think most people understand seeing as how he is the most powerful person in the free world. Generally the only people who complain about this are freedom hating assholes. ;)

    I don't think a lot of people understand how much comes with AF1. At some point before AF1 got there a cargo plane landed that had the presidential cars in it. The "backup" AF1 was flying with it, it may land at a airforce base though. Not to mention the air force escort AF1 gets while flying. I'm actually shocked it was just a 45 minute delay. And people get so upset when presidents don't load up and head straight to a disaster area. It causes so much chaos it's just not worth it.

      Emergencies (aircraft in distress) always have priority, even over Air Force One. This is specifically stated in the regulations -- FAAO 7110.65. However, it's unlikely to happen. Presidential movements are carefully orchestrated, weeks in advance. Air Force One is not a "surprise"... the controllers have known for at least 4 or 5 days exactly when it's coming, and the procedures that will be used. Pilots based in the area are also notified several days in advance. Domestic Air Force One itineraries are not secret... everyone knows, well in advance, what is going to happen.

      @@ServantOfOdin That's true. I implied that emergencies won't happen, but I should have explained that more clearly. Since the TFR is announced well in advance, the likelihood of an emergency in the vicinity of the airport is greatly reduced. In other words, if the airspace is sterilized and advertised well in advance, there's practically no chance that any aircraft will be anywhere near the airport, in a position to declare an emergency.

    I never thought of aircraft having ability to crash into AF1. I can understand the TFR. Is AF1 accompanied by fighters for protection?

      No its not. Nothing in the sky over the US is going to be a threat no reason to send fighters and if there was a threat it would be intercepted WAY before it reach the shores of the US. That fatty can handle itself with its defensive abilities

      If you fly in the TFR, then fighter jets will turn up at you side to escort you away if you don't get out of it quickly.

      I have heard multiple myths that they do have an escort to a specific distance, I hear that jets are on standby for a rapid response, who knows honestly

      A 747 is quite a bit faster then the vast majority of relatively affordable general aviation aircraft. Don’t think they would need to worry much about avoiding a madman in a Cessna 172, or Cirrus SR22. Would only need to worry about airliners and corporate jets who would all be grounded or well outside the TFR zone.

      I can't image AF1 not having a bubble of restricted air space around it. AFBs always have alert squadrons on standby within minutes and I would guess that when AF1 is in the vicinity of AFBs, the alert status is heightened.
      So ideally, when an aircraft or any other airborne object enters the restricted airspace around AF1.. AF1 would take evasive action and the alert fighters are scrambled and vectored to intercept.
      Of course I could be completely wrong, I'm just a random guy theorizing what I would expect to be protocol.

    Sounds like a headache for everyone using the airport. Frustrating to say the least.

    You would think AF1 would be communicating on Military Aviation Frequencies for security reasons... unless the actual was landing elsewhere.

    This may be a dumb question, but is it standard to spell waypoints like he did at 12:31? Or would they usually say "whiskey - alpha - ..."?

    I'm an aspiring pilot. I'd love to get in contact with someone that wants to talk about aviation.
