  • This Video World Champion Sebastian Serpa shows one of his most effective systems for taking the back. Most people think of the X Guard as a purely sweeping position, but this system Sebastian used makes it so easy to take the back. The benefit is that if you have a really difficult opponent with a tough guard instead of having to pass after sweeping you can just end the match immediately by going to the back. We show his system as well as some of our favorite ways for setting up the single leg x position.

The detail on breaking the sleeve grip was amazing. I know it wasn’t the scope of the video, but I’ve been playing with this guard for a while and I’ve never seen this. Awesome content as always Jon, thank you!

Thank you! I’ve recently discovered in the last year because of my size as a smaller stocky body type, that slx has become very natural and strong position for me. I’ve found so much success in it. Now I can add one more option to the list!!

awesome video as always. We were drilling this today in class, but just with the sweep, and when I was in X in sparring, I kept thinking, I feel there is a back take here with the underhook! but I didn't try it. I will next time :)

Very, very good. I use X guard all the time and often with success as it’s such a powerful guard, however there are some answers to common counters here which I struggle with. I will have to play with this in sparring. It’s going to take practice though as it’s a lot of switching between both legs and sweeps so will take some time to learn. Thank you as always!

Yeah taking that inside foot out a and putting it on the stomach is super cool that has been really useful for me to add in.

@@JonThomasBJJ Definitely, I also find it tricky to switch from an overhook to underhook to get into traditional X as decent opponents won’t let you get this space to do so. I like how he emphasises to try and make your opponent believe you’re going to grab the far leg to complete the sweep, and in doing so it frees up space to switch from overhook to underhook as they move away and you can then come up for the technical stand up, or switch back to the back take if they put weight back into you. Effectively creating a trilemma for your opponent from X and Ashi. 👏🏻

OK so for the single leg x back take, you are basically getting both knees behind the person while maintaining good connection. At least that's a small unmentioned detail that I gathered. In the vid, he gets the right knee behind, then the left knee.
