there where so many versions of lila panic too, and i loved all of them, i remember here in south america there used to be a "zm_lila_panic 24/7" and was full most of the time
Just to let you know that the server that GamingRevenant used to record most of his high views videos (CS1.6) was called ProGamingba which is sadly online but dead now!! I hope it'll be back one day:)
So to chime in a bit. I'm 31. I grew up with the tail end of 1.6 and the start of source. zombie mod/escape was basically my entire childhood. About a year ago this dude's videos would randomly start showing up on my front page. Just like you said in the end, I watched them to relive an old memory.
I'm so glad someone's talking about how zombies USE to be... it's so hard to find footage. Limited ammo, night vision on de_dust or cs_office night maps... so fun, and ACTUALLY somewhat scary. Amazing how the bare basics made it so much better to me. Everyone would find a place to bunker down, sometimes weird ledges that required a specific skill and good timing, to jump to, further adding to the thrill of trying not to get zombified. And I absolutely loved being able to shoot furniture to block doors and windows. It was a touch of realism. Then the years went by and it just got ridiculous with lasers and a million skins and songs you had to download before you could even get into a server. Once you were in, it was waaaaaay too much chaos... mic spamming and just mass confusion is most of what I remember, not feeling like I was doing anything since zombies had 100 million health. What's the fun in that? Not to mention, I just felt out of the loop on most of the maps since they had so many nuances/secrets. Maybe there was some lore I needed to read or a tutorial I needed to watch but ultimately it just didn't bring me joy like the early days. Anywho, that was my experience. Nothing lasts forever.
23 now, and i think ive played zm or ze since i was like 8-9years old. I remember a golden age where all the servers were dominated by danish (like myself) players. It was definitely my favourite era. Does anyone remember the spawn of class servers after? Where you could choose different classes like headcrab and assassin, and play against other people? Thank you for documenting this golden age of the cs community
The reason why mods like Zombie Escape were extremely popular in Turkey was probably because everyone was downloading the game illegally. I also downloaded and played a pirated version. Additionally, games like Counter-Strike, League of Legends, Wolfteam, and Metin2 were extremely popular in internet cafes. As you mentioned, since most people didn't have computers at home, kids would come to these cafes to play.
Ah man, I didn't even know that games could be bought back then. We always had a older friend who would give us a CD or a DVD and we would install games from there.
So much unexpected nostalgia in your video. Watching the zombie escape maps of Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park, Helms Deep, aperture and many more is so fun. I also like to think that some people likes to see how a map ends because some of them are so hard to complete, there is always that 1 guy that start the spread
Fun fact: if you Search about it Zombies mods for CS, mainly for CS 1.6 and maybe Source i think, you can find the mod called Xtreme, its was a very popular mod back them, customs weapons and skins for the humans and zombies, even a "Boss" , this mod had servers back them, i don't think these servers are online now, but it was fun mod to play, even more in those servers, i think some servers have custom guns like that, but i don't think they are using the Xtreme mod, maybe another mod or a community mod on steam. Oh, i almost forgot, on steam, we have something like the Xtreme mod, its Called "Counter Strike Nexus Studio", in the past the name was "CS Nexus Zombies" , its pratically the Xtreme mod by Nexus , with P2W system and other things
Counter Strike Nexon Studio, its not Xtreme mod made back then, most of those mods like CS BTE & CSO-NST and yes also CS Xtreme was just the community attempt to make the original Counter Strike Online (by Nexon Studio) to be playable offline & online at the same time. Counter Strike Nexon Studio is Counter Strike Online after they can't keep up on Running the servers for multiple region with a standalone client and now has to rely on Steam, but they wasn't allowed to use the Counter Strike Online name on Steam so they end up with the name they have now. Tbh on why its became p2w, its Nexon, have you seen their mobile games?
Amazing short documentary! I remember zombie mode is actually what got me into playing CS1.6 in the first place. My brother would play it but it was never my thing because it felt too serious, then all of a sudden I saw him playing one of those early iterations of zombie plague on a small arena-like map, with that green night vision. My brain just saw bright neon colors and was instantly hooked. I think in a way, zombie mode was a sort of "gateway drug" to Valve games in general to many people. And yeah, your analysis for why that video of the Minecraft map going viral made a lot of sense, the fact that it looked like Minecraft is the first thing that your eyes focus on, then you see the guns.
This mod and all those memories playing really was special. I still remember a lot of great and terrible maps from the community servers in css throughout the years.
I love that CS1.6 & CSGO zombie escape servers has more diverse choises of maps, meanwhile CS Source, its either a Final Fantasy, Lord of The Rings, or Pirates of the Carribean maps (mostly Final fantasy maps idk why they are addicted to mako 24/7)
Man i cant forget zombies mode its was sooo goood back in the day i remeber when i discovered it in csgo i tought it didnt exist in it and stayed up the whole night playing it golden age.
I used to play zombie mod back in like 06. It’s super old and some of the original maps still hold up today. The other mode from zombie escape, barricade, was also really fun. More of a survive as long as you can type deal. Also, Mines of Moria is still the coolest map in my opinion.
Man, this took me back I used to play Zombie Escape/ZM so much back in 2008. My favorites were boat escape, pirates of the caribbean and the final fantasy Mako reactor one I should boot up CS:S sometime to play again. Same with Day of Defeat, BrainBread and Zombie Panic!/ZP:S if they still have players on them
Zombies From Hell, [ZfH] and Zombies of Resident Evil, ZoRE, were both servers part of that 2010ish era. We had a mixed map pool with both ZM and ZE maps. Lots of great memories :) 64/64 players every single day!
Crazy way of bringing nostalgia, man. Awesome video and thanks for bringing me and us (the people who have watched this guy and his content) this trip to nostalgia.
I feel so privileged to have been part of the "veterans" 14-15 years ago.. goddamn. I still remember those fucking soda machine spots in Lila that were impenatrable. Voodoo islands also had that one spot under the boxes in the 2nd island I believe, and you can have someone shove a barrel in there to keep you safe while the main horde was attacking the main boat where most humans were.
So sad though that people don't know about CS: Condition Zero. When I was little I had a period where I switched from 1.6 zombies to Condition Zero zombies and maaaan it was soooo much nicer, I encountered such a nice community there and the mods where FAR SUPERIOR to 1.6. I had a BLAST playing Resident Evil mode where you were playing kind of in the movie universe, around the mansion from the first movie, and many more maps and it was some sort of escape aswell. Zombie building on there was superb and I am SO SAD that there are no servers anymore and people have forgotten it.
your video popped in my Recommendations a few times now, and I was very surprised when I finally watched it and it had less than a thousand likes :p good quality, keep it up
I just want to point out that you talking hurriedly at the end of the video was something that kept me listening for everything you had to say. I've never really seen that used at the end of a video but it kind of caught me off guard and definitely made me check out a few of your other videos.
I remember stumbling upon his CSS ze_minecraft video which got me hooked to these Zombie Escape videos ever since and introduced me to Valve and it's games for the first time
these bosses are amazing! It's a a full MMO raid boss, but in CS! I hope CS2 community maps evolve to something great.. I mean we have a new powerful engine now, but let's see what time gives us
man i remember being hoked to zm game mode in 1.6 , playing the zm dust 2 full modified with laser mines and special powers you can buy it was amazing i wish someone did something like that in cs2
I love this niche videos about gaming stuff. I just watched some footage about the mod from the sidelines years ago and it's nice to know the origins and lore now. If anyone shares such an interest I can recommend the 3h "I played all Jurassic Park games" video as well as the 1h "Falador Massacre - RuneScape" documentary here on UA-cam.
Lasers, bosses, items etc. killed Zombie escape. People would only join servers to play those maps, then leave... Often leaving the server with 30-45 people and not recovering for an hour or two, only to happen again. They would also spend hundreds of hours practicing offline, so when the time came, they won it first go while regular players never got to play, learn or beat that map. These players would also sit in spectate waiting for the last stage, denying a server slot for an actual player. If they were mother zombie, they would just afk or go spec, making it less fun for everyone in the server. Some servers started offering paid packages where you could avoid mother zombie and get a reserved server slot. This made the problem worse while making the game become pay2win in a sense. Some maps even started introducing "VIP perks" where people would pay $100 to the mapper. Luckily this was at the end of CS:GO's life and was k1ll3d off with CS2's release. The mapper hard capped at 30 people which it reached within a week.
Didnt know u had a youtube channel, I know you from the GFL Zombie Escape server. Ur video popped up in my home page and props to u, it's very well made :D (a tear went down my cheek when I saw angry soccer mom in the recorded footage, that mf was so funny). See you in game ;)
what is very very interesting and funny is that you could make the exact same video about surf and bhop/kz. it was coming out in 1.6 as an established game mode, was carried over to source where it became really popular, cause of the amout of the players itself in the game. but if you now watch bhop and surf videos the 1.6 videos have millions of views, cause its nostalgic, and source gameplay just doesnt apply to everybody. i never played it, or liked it, i actually played 1.6 until 2012 + starcraft 2, and two years later it brought me to csgo.
