    I built a Prinsu style roof rack for a fraction of the cost on our 100 series Land Cruiser.
    If you have any questions we're happy to answer in the comments. The idea for this DIY roof rack came from Venture works on ih8mud, I've linked the original post and their instagram if you'd like to check them out.

    Also, you could get just the mounting "feet" from Sherpa and make any size rack with the tnutz rails.

    great idea - a crazy amount of savings in comparison to other options. thanks for sharing

    You could, since you decided NOT to use the anchors you had machined holes for, just turn the gusseted angle parts 90⁰. Then mount them UNDER the rails. This adds rail dimension height. And get the end rail plastic covers to hide the exposed cut ends.

    How far apart are the channels on the top of the extrusion (where the bracket mount would sit)? This looks like a great way to solve a standard 100 series problem!

    Did you cutout easy drop in slots on the rails to install bolts and if you did how did you notch them out?

    Are the cross bars hitting the roof?

    • @ScaleofTwo
      @ScaleofTwo  7 місяців тому +1

      They are not! Probably about a half inch of clearance. The bars are very stiff, so no flex to worry about.

    How is the black anodizing holding up on those Tnutz extrusions? Anodizing out in the sun generally has a tendency to fade out in the sun. I am thinking about using some for a project and wondering how it's going to hold up.

    • @ScaleofTwo
      @ScaleofTwo  2 роки тому

      So, the extrusions are holding up for us (so far). The hardware has completed rusted on the surface on all of the bolts. Very disappointed. Someone who used this solution for the roof rack sent a picture of the extrusions and the bars were still in good shape, but the little brackets had completely worn off the paint / anodize. I’d say the extrusions will probably hold up, the hardware you may want to go a different direction

    How’s the wind noise with your DIY roof rails?

    • @ScaleofTwo
      @ScaleofTwo  Рік тому

      Well, it’s fine. The only time it’s bad is if we’re driving into a stiff headwind. Otherwise, no noise at all. But in a headwind it’s pretty annoying 😅

    • @XxDesertWarriorxX
      @XxDesertWarriorxX Рік тому

      You could always try and get an LFD universal wind fairing to bolt on to the front rail as well, which may remove the wind noise! I'm planning on doing some extrusion crossbars on my 4th gen 4runner, and using a fairing since theyre only around $50

    • @ScaleofTwo
      @ScaleofTwo  Рік тому

      Could you explain a bit more? Do you mean have the crossbars tapped to attach to the roof rails? That seems like it would be difficult to actually bolt them to the roof rails, but maybe I’m missing something

      @@ScaleofTwo FIrst off, I really appreciate this video as I'm looking for better rack for my GX470 and this was one of the options I was considering. To try and answer your question here, on the GX you can remove the factory rail "caps" at the rear of the truck to provide access to the channels the rails mount to. I'd assume the 100/LX was built similarly. I do regularly make inccorrect assumptions about what's possible so could be very wrong.
