Excellent video! I’ve been trying to figure out how to mimic the roofline, the compass trick is ingenious! I think that’s the last piece of the puzzle I was missing.
Tnutz makes rails that are already tapped on each end now. Looks good, I was looking for a decent solution for the brackets to attach to the roof, I like your method.
Thanks for watching and yes i definetly should have went into better detail about that. In a previous comment i did try tp describe how i did it though if that would help!
I’m looking to put a roof rack on a sedan. Unlike the SUVs and your Tacoma, it doesn’t have factory mounting points. Right now it looks like I can remove the headliner and drill holes up through the reinforced portion of the roof. Always open to thoughts and ideas if you have any.
Hey...nice build. I heard u said 3/16 aluminum...is that .190 when selecting 'size' on the site? I see there are options ranging from .04 to .19 on the drop menu for 'size' using the link u provided. I appreciate the feedback...thanks!
I purchased 3 pieces 4in x 60in x3/16in. The website I got them from is in my video description but for sure shop around for the best price! Thanks for watching
Thanks for watching. I definetly should of added more if that but I used 2x2 aluminum angle and cut/drilled it to fit on the roof then layed the rack on top evened it up and drilled and bolted to it. Because I did that curve in the rack it self the front hold needed about .5 in spacers on each side. I hope that made since anc helped!
Nice looking fab. Have you had a chance to get any load bearing data. I’m wondering if there is much downward flex along the centerline that might compromise the roof. Great build, thanks! Subscribed.
So far the most weight I've put on it was me standing on it and I did not notice any major flex. Other than that I have no actual strength tests. And mounting them i used 1/8in aluminum angle bars to make brackets to the roof and then drilled holes into the rack where it lined up. Thank you for watching and I hope this helps.
From what I understand it’s if you needed say 45 and 1/2 in the 45 is the length and the fractional length is the 1/2. I went with 48 inches for my Tacoma. Hope this helps
Super nice build. i would like to do smth similar for a LR 3. the price for a commercial one are ridiculous. One quick question. How did u make the mounts?
I do believe 3/16 is strong enough. I’ve strapped down kayaks and paddle boards down and can even stand on it so I feel confident with it. And I’m not sure in the weight it’s not to heavy because I can lift it fairly easy on to the roof. Thanks for watching
It really didn’t concern me to much I am able to stand in it with out it flexing severely. And the flex that is visible comes from the mounts that go to my roof the bars are pretty ridged. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps!
Yes I do think it will support a roof top tent! And if you want a little more beef you could make out out of 1/4 in aluminum vs the 3/16 I used. But as is it is super rigid. And thank you it means a lot lol
dude, this is awesome mind if I use this idea for my first gen Tacoma? only reason I ask is because I will be making a video on it too. ill be sure to link to your video for instruction.
I added the companies i purchased my supplies from in the description. I did notice the aluminum went up about 10 dollars more per bar Im sure its due to the covid shortages on everything. And it may depend on shipping to where you live. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps you out.
So I called a couple laser cutting places just to have the two side plates cut out for me and the cost to setup was $500 and $300. I swear I should just get an angle grinder like you and cut the sides
That’s a harbor freight bandsaw I got for around 80 dollars that’s usually for wood. It’s not to uncommon to have in a garage. That was the best tool I had on hand to cut with. You could definitely get away with a grinder or a hack saw I just used what I had. Thanks for watching.
Awesome build, keep on rockin

Thanks for watching and I’m happy I can help!
sweet build! definitely use what I learned here to build a similar rack for my 2021 Highlander since no one makes one for it.
Awesome good luck on the build!
Killer job my man. I’ve been wanting to do something like this. Been eyeballing those Prinsus for a few years now.
Awesome job dude, I’m using your methods when I build mine. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks for the video, you just give me good idea for my futur Honda Element
Awesome build man. I definitely will diy mine when time is right. Thanks for sharing!
Great job, dude! Looks totally professional. The slotted rails really are the greatest thing since sliced bread for DIY'ers.
Impressive.
Thanks for the video.
Forgive me, but I'm going to copy this. Great job.
Thanks for watching! And fell free to make it that’s my main motivation for these videos I want people to build!
Great job man excellent video
Looks great! Thanks for sharing
Nice job!
I love it also I liked the way you measured the roof contour since I have a honda element. 👍🏆🥇🏆
Thanks you! And if you make one for your Honda I would love to see the result I think it would be awesome!
@@buddabuilds8851 I will 👍

I wasn’t sure what length I was going to end with so I ordered the rails big and then tap them myself. Thanks for the advice though
Really nice build man!
Looks dope! Love the design
Hey thanks for watching!
Awesome job! Looks amazing.
Thank you!
Rock on dude. That's sumptin... getting ready to drop a bucket on a UpTop... ;o)
Thanks for watching!
Awesome work man!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Can you tell me what is the distance from the roof to the bottom of the bars? Have you had any issues the brackets touching the roof?
Thank you for watching! And the measurement closest to the roof is .5 inches and I don’t have much or any flex when strapping things down.
How did you mount it
U did great, too bad u didn’t show how u attached the rack to the roof, great job.
Thanks for watching and yes i definetly should have went into better detail about that. In a previous comment i did try tp describe how i did it though if that would help!
Im trying to orter the t slot rails but i dont know what “fractional lenth” to get
I got my rails in mm and it was 20x40 which is just under 1in x2in. Worked out good for me!
Nice job
Nice job bro
This is awesome! You make it look so easy haha.
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Definitely will make my own rather than shell out $700-$900. Thanks!!!
Have fun building! Thanks for watching

Hopefully not to late but rivnuts are a good way of installing a rack on to a roof. I personally never have done it but others on you tube have!

Yes 3/16s is roughly .1875 so its just a hair under the .190 in the selection. Hope you see this in time if if not good luck on the build!
What were the dimensions/thickness of the aluminum sheets you got
I purchased 3 pieces 4in x 60in x3/16in. The website I got them from is in my video description but for sure shop around for the best price! Thanks for watching
How would you go about mounting something like this to a naked F150 roof?
There should be some threaded holes underneath the weather stepping that you can bolt it up too
I’ve got a truck that looks exactly like yours! Wow!
You got great taste in trucks!
Looks great thank
Nice build, any advice on how to mount it to the truck? I was hoping to see more of that.
Thanks for watching. I definetly should of added more if that but I used 2x2 aluminum angle and cut/drilled it to fit on the roof then layed the rack on top evened it up and drilled and bolted to it. @@buddabuilds8851 thanks! I think I understand. Gonna attack mine soon. Just hate the thought of spending +$600 on a Prinsu!
Awesome build. Do you get much wind noise or whistle from the T-slot rails?

Oh, and another question: Could you explain how the mounts you made attach to the factory roof track? Thanks.
Solid video man! Gonna use this build on my Subaru Forester and will give you a shoutout when I do on my channel! Subbed as respect ✌🏼
I have the website in the description to the company I went through and they offer the black ones
@@buddabuilds8851 ah! Sweet my bad I missed the links! Thanks a lot!
@@WEEKENDWNDR3RS No problem have fun building!
What did you use for the mounting brackets to the roof?
I used 2x2x 1/8 aluminum angle and trimmed it to fit my factory roof slots. The front ones I did have to use a small spacers to make it work
Buddy would you build me one for my 98 4runner, please
Good job. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Looks nice
Thank you!
wow! thank you for that video. How is your day? How long did that take you to build?
Thanks for watching. My day was pretty good thank you. My build took about a week and a couple hours each day
what is the fractional length vs the length in inches on the selection for the extrusion? what did you go with?
From what I understand it’s if you needed say 45 and 1/2 in the 45 is the length and the fractional length is the 1/2. I went with 48 inches for my Tacoma. Hope this helps
awesome
I'm thinking about doing this on my silverado 1500. What did you use for feet, and did you have to drill into the roof?
I used 1/8 angle aluminum for mounts and I used the factory roof rack holes. Thanks for watching
I'd buy that
Super nice build. i would like to do smth similar for a LR 3. the price for a commercial one are ridiculous. One quick question. How did u make the mounts?
The mounts are 1/8 aluminum angle I made to work!
Does 3/16 thickness provide enough durability ? I was thinking of doing one with a 1/4"
Dou you know the weight of your rack? Just curious
I do believe 3/16 is strong enough. I’ve strapped down kayaks and paddle boards down and can even stand on it so I feel confident with it. And I’m not sure in the weight it’s not to heavy because I can lift it fairly easy on to the roof. Thanks for watching
@@buddabuilds8851 thanks for the info brother!
Given most of the alu racks are made using 1"x2", did you have concerns using 2040? Have you put much weight on it?
It really didn’t concern me to much I am able to stand in it with out it flexing severely. And the flex that is visible comes from the mounts that go to my roof the bars are pretty ridged. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps!
dope
Nice!

Can you post the measurements and the source for the parts online, I can find them but it's way more than 200 for just the parts. Thanks

Man what do you call the machine saw you use to cut that aluminium.. that's so a special tool 😅

Great work, but this job involves $6000 worth of tools ⚒️ 😄
Thanks but not really babe saw can be replaced by a cheap jig saw other than that it’s the basic power tools.
