Thank you Travis for this video. It,s a georgian grip and we call it "Gadavlebuli" , alsow russians sometime call it georgian name. You can hear from Georgian coaches during the fight how they ask judokas - "Gadaavle" it means take this kind of grip. Founders of sambo take it from the Georgian traditional wrestling, great part of sambo stand up fighting techniques are from Georgian wrestling - Chidaoba. In Georgian language Chidaoba means wrestling or grappling
Please do a video of those forbidden throws from Georgian grip before mankind forget them completely. We don't want to end up with another UFC 1 all over again.
Love this grip, it's how I like to do my Sumi, although it's a million miles away from looking as good as yours! Amazing content as ever Travis can't wait to train again. Many thanks from the UK.
Awesome thanks Travis! I usually keep this grip as a back up or secondary option especially if my opponent keeps their hips back or if they have poor posture. Makes for some huge throws!
Yess, this channel is a treasure in regards to high Level grappling instruction you get FOR FREE Do you plan on making a follow up, where you show the leg grab variations you talked About? I do both Judo and bjj and even if it is prohibited i still would like to learn this historic throws greetings from bavaria
Love these Travis! I’m a BJJ player and love the Georgian and Russian grips - people really struggle to defend these as they are unfamiliar, but so effective! I’d like a more detailed analysis if possible. Thank you 🙏🏻
Rob I can do that for you. It will be a little bit before I can get it done for you though. I'll have to find a partner who has some experience with it. Because a lot of the details require a back and forth as you can image.
Just to clarify: Georgian and Russian grips are different belt grips. GEORGIAN grip reaches for belt in a way that your opponent's head is under your armpit (like this video) RUSSIAN grip reaches for the belt in a way that your opponent's head is above your shoulder. I.e. reaching around the other shoulder.
I started to adopt that grip .It has one problem .When you throw your opponent there is a high chance to hurt your right shoulder or left shoulder according to you if right or left handed .Especially if you grasp his belt and throw .your shoulder has a high chance to hit the Matt frist
I'm reasonably new to judo although I've wrestled all of my life. Any grips I take in a Gi start as "blinded by panic" grips. They are not particularly effective but they also act as "emotional support grips" as I hang on for dear life😂. This I think will be much better.
Can you show the ones that involve the leg grabs? While not legal in IJF they might have no-gi applications or especially in self defense judo since many people wear belts or at least the waist of your average trouser can be grabbed similarly to the Georgian grip.
Not really sure. We have always referred to it as a Russian Grip where I'm from but I guess it's more popularly known as a Georgian grip. Thats all I know.
@@TravisStevensgrappling The grip has a lineage from Georgian wrestling called Chidaoba, it passed from there to Sambo and then onto Judo durring The Soviet Union. Georgian Grip is more appropriate, since it accredits the nation of origin. Rusian Grip was used as a name for the symmetrical, over the back belt grip like in Obi Tori Ashi Dori, which is where I think the confusion comes from. "Knowing is half the battle," GI Joe's
Yes but you don't have to throw. As long as you are engaged you can keep the grip. But I would not hold it longer than 8-10 seconds even if you are hooked in.
Don't call it the "russian" grip please.. sambo stole moves from georgian Chidaoba and even inventor of Sambo said himself that 90% of Sambo is Chidaoba. it is indeed Georgian Grip. and no no way in the world's life-time it was or will be a Russian grip.
every time you say Russian/Georgian, the words slice through my skin :)) it never was Russian. Only during USSR it "became" Russian as Georgians would compete under USSR flag. please, scan history of Georgia briefly.
Thank you Travis for this video.

Chi-dao-ba 😀
Cool to hear
I am Russian and we called it "gadauli" =) I guess it is the short from the original name
Been to Georia twice Loved it! Great People Great Food Fantastic Wine and a Mystical Country!
as a georgian judoka myself i can tell you that you can do 50+ techniques with that grip
Man there are so many! It's such a dangerous grip if you can get there!
Please do a video of those forbidden throws from Georgian grip before mankind forget them completely. We don't want to end up with another UFC 1 all over again.
I have it on my list to shoot!!!
Had to come back to this one from the latest video of the Georgian judoka doing something like a khabarelli.
Love this grip, it's how I like to do my Sumi, although it's a million miles away from looking as good as yours! Amazing content as ever Travis can't wait to train again. Many thanks from the UK.
I'm glad you like the content and it's helping you get through this tough time!
Super, Sumi Gaeshi is my favorite. Always works against BJJ 🙂👍🥋
That throw turns all black belts to white belts LOL.
I think i would go for obi tori gaeshi😂 i love this throw 😅
Awesome thanks Travis! I usually keep this grip as a back up or secondary option especially if my opponent keeps their hips back or if they have poor posture. Makes for some huge throws!
I do the same. It's never plan A but it's a great plan B. There are some real powerful attacks from there.

Yes its on the docket for next week! I'm glad you like the content I'm able to put out!
Just what i was looking for, thanks Travis!
Brilliant video, straightforward and concise 👌🏼
Would love to see the illegal throws as well. Big fan of the channel keep them coming.
I'll shoot some more old school judo techniques!
Very useful, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you travis.
there's a modified khabarelli i've seen done where you grab the front of uke's belt instead of his leg
Yes there is! I like it but have not tried it in Randori yet. It's mostly done by the Russian players.
Love these Travis! I’m a BJJ player and love the Georgian and Russian grips - people really struggle to defend these as they are unfamiliar, but so effective! I’d like a more detailed analysis if possible. Thank you 🙏🏻

Excellent stuff!
At open grappling events i would put fear againt bjj with karabelli . very powerful
I'm not sure but it might be a banned technique? I know Sumi is because the head is to the outside.
it is called khabareli, after georgian judoka named shota khabareli
HELL YEA Trav, G-grip is a fundamental of my game
NICE!
awesome video Travis. Hope you get back to uploading soon man!!
Can you do a video on the Georgian grip that’s doing the leg grabbing? I’m curious about it.
Thank you another great video
This is great! Would it be correct to assume that this is effective against a low defensive/wrestling stance?
I started to adopt that grip .It has one problem .When you throw your opponent there is a high chance to hurt your right shoulder or left shoulder according to you if right or left handed .Especially if you grasp his belt and throw .your shoulder has a high chance to hit the Matt frist
amazing !

This is the secret of Georgians' success 😜
Can you show the ones that involve the leg grabs? While not legal in IJF they might have no-gi applications or especially in self defense judo since many people wear belts or at least the waist of your average trouser can be grabbed similarly to the Georgian grip.
Awesome, would you mind showing the leg grab one's that they used back in the days?
Yes I can do that. Make sure you check it out next week!
@@TravisStevensgrappling Sure will do! Thanks!
I can still grab lets on Kosen Judo. Competing in few days Kosen
What is it called when I put my hand over the other side ?
Also on the back
Does it have a specific name?
It's just called Georgian Grip, it was named after that nation specifically.
Not really sure. We have always referred to it as a Russian Grip where I'm from but I guess it's more popularly known as a Georgian grip. Thats all I know.

"Knowing is half the battle," GI Joe's
yea i just know it as the georgian grip, since that's where its from lmfao
At that time Georgia was one of the republics of USSR. But Western people used to call USSR as just "Russia"
@@Nfsbelka Yes, which is very wrong. It is exactly the same as calling Scotland or Wales England
Travis have you ever practiced with a judoka versed with the kosen rule set (as opposed to IJF rules)? What's your opinion of these judokas?
Never faced a high level Judoka versed in Kosen only.
Could you show some leg grab throws?
Yes I could!!! I'll get that shot for next week!
Why did they take out leg grabs? I use to love rhadi Ferguson highlights
I'm not sure. I think it had a lot to do with TV and trying to progress the sport!
Dope content!
Also, what characterizes the Korean style? Are the grips similar to the Russian ones?
What Jay Lee Said!
Great description. I'm super thankful you saved me from typing all of that out.
THANKS TRAVIS! that's why Tchrikishvili had some hard matches with you ha?
Are these throws still legal in Judo? Thanks
Just came back to say thank you to Travis Stevens, for this content
Could this grip/ hand placement translate to no gi? I feel like this uchi mata variation would perform well with no gi
Ethan it can. Wrestlers do something similar but they grab the lat rather than the belt.
Is harai goshi a good throw with this grip or would it be to hard to rotate completely?
No it’s a great option!
That sumi is the only throw I have any real consistency with
That surprises me. I know a lot of people it's Osoto and Ouchi. The Sumi is easy to defend.
I love it, too bad in BJJ there´s a fear of singles and doubles.
I agree!
Under hook the left arm under their right and grab their tricep. Pinch down with your right elbow on their back to control posture
@@degenerategrappling6503 To avoid counters I guess.
Good luck wirh those when the opponent has a good Georgian grip on you, and knows how to use it. Hahaha
Do u have to attack in 5 sec once u grip ,before ref call shido?
Yes but you don't have to throw. As long as you are engaged you can keep the grip. But I would not hold it longer than 8-10 seconds even if you are hooked in.
Worked if you're tall as a pole
A lot of shorter players had a lot of success with it as well.
Mitt zheer gut
I see Russian grip, I subscribe.
LMAO! Thanks for the Sub Carlos!
Is not russian grip this is Georgian 🇬🇪 grip
