When I heard how the shop lady was roleplayed, I realized "She knows" and later when the big fellow nodded to the shop lady I realized "They all know don't they?" My question was proved right when I heard that a man who cried "Gob!" was gagged, an excellent story!

@@kristinadelfierro1320 my favorite thing about kobolds, besides their crafty intelligent nature, is that they're generally really chill. Unless a clan is ruled by an Urd (one with wings) kobolds are friendly, if they get enough to eat and tinker with.
Some clans will build sewer systems under towns and cities, and in exchange locate the warren in an off shoot tunnel from the sewer, where they'll trade tinkered nick nacks and inventions for scrap and food.
It's a great way to intro kobolds to a campaign, showing this.

He is now a long-running npc that helps new adventurers in my players other games.

So I'd like for my party to find out the story from some NPC, like the barmaid: so listen, one day I'm running the place like usual when a huge "wooden body" with the head of a goblin comes in and sits at that table over there, asks for 3 plates of soup and offers to make some "medicine" for people, now the three goblins run the potion shop and do some minor repairs around town. Yes I know, goblins are dangerous but these guys seem to be happier helping and living normal lives rather than sacking and stealing.

Morale of the story: Never assume that all humans(or goblins or trolls or other monsters) seek to end your life. Yeah, those three goblins did what they did to get away from their own kind and since the only experience they had with humans were human adventurers who kill goblins for EXP, it makes sense that they would be paranoid and try to hide their faces, but let's face it: Goblins suck at acting. All it took was a guy to have a stomach ache and need a elixir for it to make a human community accept goblins into their fold.
Once again, never assume a person wants to kill you from what you know about them. This was a really great story and I love stories about humanoid monsters who want to integrate into human society.

@@allthingsdnd It was a one-shot I run for my students every semester (I do in-class tutoring). The players of my most recent run were are a goblin barbarian, a human fighter, a warforged monk and an aasimar cleric. The adventure starts in the mountain village Comida where they meet in the dark mirror inn and bar. After RP-ing a bit, the mayor enters and asks them to investigate when some farm animals go missing, they're tasked with finding them as the ground can't grow crops, so they persist on livestock fed on grass and weeds. After making their way to the farm, and investigating their surroundings, they find that the fence post along a steep slope has been tampered with and there are poorly hidden tracks. They follow those tracks to a cave about an hour away. After entering, they follow the tracks leading to a fork in the path going to the left. There they find a couple Orcs butchering the animals prepping them for a meal, the Cleric tries to stop them, but the Orcs can't understand; when that becomes apparent, the goblin tries to stop them by speaking in Orc, but is simply told, "Wait for dinner, no extra portions!" Realizing they won't get paid if all the animals are butchered, they dispatch the Orcs (with the cleric almost dying to a crit). After a short rest, some looting and securing the animals so they don't run away, the group decides to head down the other path which is covered in some dark liquid they can't discern. The barbarian and fighter fall into a spike trap, but end up fine after a quick touch up from the cleric and the fighter's second wind. They eventually find a large open room and light a wall troph filled with oil. They proceed to give me a collective, "What the hell?!" as I describe the sight of a Green Dragon and I have them roll for initiative. During the fight, I drop hints left and right about how "The cut is so clean, you don't even see blood poor out" or when the monk climbed up it "living creatures are truly a mystery to you as you feel odd bumps and a boney protrusions under its leathery hide." After about 3 rounds or combat, they finally managed to deal about 45 damage to it; and that's when it happened. The leather tore apart and sluffed off its body to reveal 5 goblins in a dragon suit. After a collective laughing fit from the table, the players dispatched the goblins, returned the animals and got their rewards. The lesson here? Always ask your DM if something seems off! XD

Firstly, I was actually thinking of the idea that gender effects how people view you would be tricky for kobolds, since that isn't usually a factor in their tribes, while the value of money is a bit easier to comprehend since they have the draconic need to horde. As for understanding gender fluidity, I didn't mean based on feeling, but understanding that one's gender is not always a static thing.

I thought it was about what would be the most difficult thing for them to learn when it comes to interacting with human culture, not specifically economic understanding. For example, if you had said Orcs instead of Kobolds, I would have brought up non violent confrontations, since orcs are naturally highly aggressive, and Lizardfolk would need to learn less literal language skills, since they are very literal minded. Good to see a town with kind of the same attitude as most of my D&D characters would have. They usually tend to go by: If it's not trying to kill anyone, then you should just be polite of you need to talk to them, and leave them be otherwise. I figured: If they're on board with Half-Orcs and Tieflings, and even Drow willing to peacefully live in settlements? Then why would they bother slaying a bunch of peaceful monsters? Heck, given my tastes:there's a good chance that they're either a Half-Orc, Tiefling or Drow themselves! Kind of hard to judge yourself for being yourself, right? xD But as adventurers, they'd probably find the non-hostility from a monster refreshing. And if I get the opportunity: that they'll end up chatting with them a little.
I remember that attitude saving my entire party once during my Sorcerer's run-in with the Lizardfolk. So we managed to sort of be captured, and were brought in front of their queen. My Tiefling thought: at least acknowledging her authority was the group's best bet at survival. A bit of bowing and 'your highness'es did save us a rigged trial and inevitable execution, I think. Queen said she'd spare us if we could curry enough favor with her people, and despite a language barrier: we did. Turns out that they were at war with the Sahagin, and they were planning attacking Stormreach because 'it stayed neutral in the war'. But thanks to us, they ended up allying with Stormreach instead.
Moral of the story: don't be a murderhobo, and don't pretend that this D&D is a videogame. It might end up preventing a war and it'll save you a few burned towns.
