Paarthunax had the benifit of knowing exactly what evil was like. He was great because he overcame his nature.
I didn't like that the Blades refused to believe his story, merely based on their prejudice, and their own inflexibility. They were unwilling to listen, even when presented with the truth that, without Paarthunax willingly mentoring the Dragonborn, Alduin would have destroyed the world.

A wonderful tidbit of lore states that when a chromatic dragon goes good. Their scales begin to take on a luster of their own. So this green dragon might eventually look like he's covered in emeralds. Its an interesting inverse of what what happen when a metallic dragon goes evil whose scales gradually dull. So if you see a red dragon with burnished red scales. You might still die but good dragons are at least open to diplomacy. It just might save a PC.

Just because most chromatic dragons are evil doesn't mean that a few can't be good. There are several times that a metallic dragon can become evil, I fought against an evil golden dragon in one of my older brother's campaigns. To be honest, Green dragons are my favorite chromatic because of stories like this. This dragon and Onyxia are cool in my book.

i find evil metallic and good chromatic dragons mainly make sense when a player is involved, ether a player raised the dragon or they are the dragon
as nature needs an outside force in order to change them drastically
if the DM makes them it feels then more like it can naturally happen as they are effectively the god of gods and feels kinda cheap

Yep did a campaign where an ancient silver dragon was suffering from a form of Dementia from its age (it was so old it was weak from age) and was trying to enforce a corrupted form of lawfulness that was causing serious unrest and damage in an elven city... It was sad to put him down. DM made his last words to our party be "Where is Kerrsylrion, I don't understand what is happening. She knows im only here...... to help....." then he collapsed with a few tears running down his snout. we did not feel like hero's and didn't even want the reward. Kerrsylrion was an elf matron who was the old dragons emissary until she passed a few decades prior.

    • @Matanlimer
      @Matanlimer 4 роки тому +14

To be fair in default DND lore dragons don't really have a choice with regards to the whole good and evil things, as they are intrinsically linked to Tiamat and Bahamut. During either rise of Tiamat or hoard of the dragon queen there's a metallic dragon (i think he was gold) that speaks how humanoids being Good/evil is special (since its an informed choice), whilst metallic dragons being good or chromatics being evil isn't, seeing as they effectively never had a choice.
Granted, DM's are free to throw that piece of the lore to the wind, or go with the eberron approach- but there's a decent, in lore reason for the chromatic=evil cliche.

These "Chromatic dragons learn friendship" stories are always fun. Lore-wise it is far more of a nature reason rather than a nurture reason for chromatic dragons being evil, just as it is for metalics to act good. These stories don't capture how natural it is for a chromatic to hate and seek to kill "lesser" creatures. Regardless, every DM has their own little universe where they can slightly modify any parts of the lore. Personally I've seen this type of modification on multiple occasions. Fun story, keep up the good work.

Blue dragons are easiest because they respond well to loyalty, familial love and being praised for certain behaviors, they can be taught good is a valid way to power that can be very rewarding not just to them but those around them making those people even more loyal to them.

The thing is onyxia was a wrymling, and while black dragons are cruel and vicious they have emotions, and are not complete psychopaths, and we can see how well she was played because she said she was proud, but seeing the thing in tears and mourning it made her no longer proud, so I do think her story is as lore friendly as this one

Reminds me of a dragon from my last campaign. Ithanothaur the CN Umbral Dragon, who wound up allying with the PCs and aided in the defense of their country. He didn't share the usual hatred his kin had for others, believing that their brutality caused them to be "so uncivilized".
Ithanothaur was an atheist, but he still liked to study "monkeys" and their strange beliefs. Despite the "monkey" term he used to refer to humanoids, he was nothing but civil and liked to engage in theological debate. He even wound up helping the PCs with a haunt that managed to encompass the entire capital city thanks to the BBEG's plan.
Umbral dragons have a preference for the taste of undead flesh and can even eat incorporeal undead. So a haunt that size that produced so many specters was a tantalizing buffet to him. You'd think that would eventually make him CG, but his breath weapon was made of negative energy that did not heal undead creatures. Anything that was slain from it would rise as a either a shadow or greater shadow, depending on how many HD the victim had. So being CN was the best he could be.

Despite overseeing the problems the human settlements in the region suffered under, he never actively helped them. He only observed them and their "illogical" practice of religious worship. The tales of Onyxia and “Emerald”, the two chromatic dragons made to be good despite their true nature. If they do not show that our sinister nature can be overcome, then perhaps they are too good for us. Always remember the most important thing about D&D, the lore and systems serve most to make a story our own. Never think, even in a pre-written adventure, that we cannot make our own stories with that which is given.

This reminds me of the old Forestlord Elf lore in 3.5 or like a precursor to it.
“Like most sylvan races, elves are in tune with the natural world, and this attunement extends to dragonkind as well. In ancient times, certain elf tribes made pacts with powerful green dragons, which in turn used their magic to imbue the elves with strange new abilities. Though the forest lord elves did not worship these evil dragons, the two groups crafted peace accords that remain in force to this day, long after those who forged the treaties died.
Any descendant of a forestlord elf (including half-elves) can also be a forestlord elf, even if she never agreed to the ancient pacts. However, the forestlord traits are unpredictable, and no one is ever certain if they will manifest in any given elf or half-elf child.
Forestlord elves are easily distinguishable from standard elves by their smooth green skin, similar to the color of a green dragon's scales. Most also have green hair, though it ranges from brown to white on occasion.”
This also reminds me of this old prestige class where an elf can make a pact or accord to gain some of their power and to protect the forest together.

This was an amazing story, it didn't get me teary eyed, but it did make me feel for the green dragon of
the story. I would imagine that the elven warriors who surrounded the injured dragon that day were dead
set on killing him right then and there, deeming him a threat. But the now grown up elven woman he had
saved as a child protected him.
You know, there is a certain quote from a certain game I feel would best fit this story:
"What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"
That quote comes from another dragon, who also comes from a world where his kind is despised, even
more so considering there are no "good" dragons in that world, its a world where ALL dragons are seen as evil. And yet he managed to overcome his own nature to become a protector and teacher, The name of said dragon is Paarthurnax.
