Best use of a system like this is for madly popular games that people still play. Roblox, Minecraft, Sims 4, GTA V, Dota 2, CS:GO etc - its 100% fine for all of these when matched with a GTX 960 upwards.
GTA V on what 720p?
I ran A4 6300 on FM2+ platform coupled with a GT 710 2GB. It could play something but... it was at least a beggining for me when I was a kid. Today I run 5600G and RX 6600
still rockin them X4 860K + R7 260X in my secondary home pc
I have an fm2+ system running an a10-7700k. I clocked the ram up to 1833mhz. Made a big difference in feeling more snappy
i used to run an X4 860K with an HD 7770 and 16gb ram, it was a struggle to play games like gta 5. i struggled to use the system, i eventually upgraded to ryzen 5 1600 and rtx 2060. never looked back since
Yeah, massive generational differences. IMO the 1st gen Ryzens still hold up quite well really.
GTA V always prefers Nvidia - the issue wasn't the CPU.
@@greenmurphy i started out running it with an hd7770, but then switched to a gtx 960 4gb the performance did improve slightly. if the cpu was a true 4 core and not a dual with HT then maybe performance may have been a bit stronger, but bulldozer/piledriver werent the most amazing of chips but they made sense if you were on a super limited budget.
I have an AM3+ and FM2+ system which is primarily used for office work, typing email, word and spreadsheets only.
That's cool, good to see these things still out there being useful 👍
Man if you think that's old, I still have my CPU/RAM/MOBO from some Phenom III's lying around. Tempted to make a build to screw around with them.
Always worth tinkering with tbh even if it's just for fun.
Lol this system looks 99.9% like mine, Mine has a Ryzen 5 2600x with a Wraith Prism Cooler, RGB 16GB RAM & RX6600. I wish youtube allowed me to comment photos so I can show you, its the same case even
Yours is way faster lol. Feel free to share pics on our Discord server.
I think this platform is close to being considered retro gaming now!
Got to be really.
It'd be fine for all Windows XP games in its time but that's like saying a brand new platform nowadays is able to play Tomb Raider 2013.
Best thing for a system like that is a geforce now subscription
That's actually a good idea.
Friend of mine was struggling with an old amd fx system and hasn't looked back since signing up to gf now
I think the socket FM2+ athlons, at least the later ones like the one you got are just APUs wit the gpu disabled, it has the same specs as the APU equivialent. There is a handful of excatavor core (Carrizo) APUs on the FM2+ socket that is one gen later and AVX2 support among other things, but idk if the performance is drastically better than the earlier 28 nm node ones.
As for core/thread count - it's complicated, they have "clustered multithreading" that something in between full 4 cores and 2 cores with SMT.
be interesting to see a comparison between how this holds up with that gpu and if you put the same gpu in a modern system just to see how much that cpu is holding it back
I can find out once the benching rig is freed up :)
fm3 built last year was still playing ok on some games i was surprised
Run my 7670K pc as a makeshift pfsense router since my DLink died. It work so great I don't think I need a replacement router anymore.
That's so awesome... I love it when older tech gets re-used and not buried in landfill.
@@TechLabUK Agree. I would say that FM2+ is a pretty good platform for building a small home / media server. Even cheap A68H motherboards usually come with four sata 6Gbps ports, USB 3.0 and Gigabit ethernet while price comparable Intel motherboard from the era, H61 only supports sata 3Gbps, no USB 3.0 and many still using 10/100 Ethernet.
you should try the amd a10 5800k it's an old processor but can be overclocked to i thiunk 4 ghz or 4.1ghz i did it in the past and it worked well and it should be better than the athlon x4 860k.
3.8mhz core 4.2mhz turbo best with 1886mhz memory and add a hd6670 card for duel graphics configuration, still using mine for og Skyrim and video editing
what is that CPU COOLER used in this video ? anyone knows ? any suggestion- cooler for my CPU ?
my CPU= Intel i5 - 3470 (+ Nvidia 1030). idle ((1% activity) temperature = 42 to 45 Celcius , Gaming activity temperature = 50 to 65 Celcius.
in this Video, with 98% CPU usage, temperature's ONLY 27 Celcius?? WOW i can shout that's fantastic !!
The Cooler is the AMD Wraith Prism. It's an AMD stock cooler from the Ryzen generations.
with doom, i think it might all be down to the vulkan API, why more dont use this, i dont know
Because then we wouldn't have to buy so many GPUs lol
would a fx 8350 build be worth it, would it do much better then this build? got some old parts laying around, hehe
Actually they are not completely terrible. This was the last time I tested one with a modern GPU: ua-cam.com/video/uErHd7T2rGc/v-deo.html
ah yes the FM2+ platform.
I remember almost a decade ago, I wanted to trade my i5 2310 and intel dh61ww with an A10 7850 and a gigabyte fm2 mobo, glad I didn't and just bought a GDDR5 GT 730 so I could play GTA V properly😂
You made the right call lol
actually...that feeling when your RAM is faster than a whole PC😅 but it's a perfect opportunity to see if i should snap one of these i mean whole platform for like 10€ cpu+ram+cpu cooler+MB btw...if CPU is a bottleneck don't use upscaling try opposite increase resolution it should move some load from CPU using upscaling can actually made things worse
CPU at 30 degrees full load is mind boggling haha
Yeah lol. It wasn't that good on the original cooler but then that was the worlds most pathetic cooling device ever. looked real sad LMAO
i managed to keep my 13400 all core 100% load at 44°C😆
@@theanglerfish Nice!
@@TechLabUK thanks =) slapping and 360AIO to that little guy was the greatest idea i ever had🤣mext time: 13100T VS 420 AIO😄
Kinda makes me want to dust off the old FX4350 and see what i can come up with
Do it! I did have an FX4300 but tried to find it a couple of weeks ago and it seemed to have disappeared. I suspect at some point I gave it away to someone who needed a replacement. Still have my FX8350 though which is cool.
The old i7 3770k will smoke any amd cpu pre ryzen.
Pretty much. Had an i7 3770 a while back and it still held up quite well.
It's actually shocking how badly the Excavator core aged. I have an A8-6600k quad-core which will sit at near constant 100% usage when doing basic tasks such as light web browsing. Gaming on it is equally as bad, even with a spare GTX 960 to help it along.
I also happen to have an i3-4170 that was released not long after the A8 and for only $10 higher MSRP. In comparison the i3 is fine for web browsing and near double the performance in games. Pre-Ryzen AMD CPUs truly were hot garbage and now literal e-waste in 2024.
I've owned an FX-8150, FX 6100, Phenom II X4 and an A8. Out of all of them, the only one that was semi decent for its time was the Phenom. Thankfully in my main rig I have a 7800X3D now, and that thing is a monster :D
Yeah, it's surprising the difference between intel and amd back then, leagues apart.
nitpick but Excavator is the name of the last generation of Steamroller cores found in a few of the last FM2+ APUs, some laptops and the athlon APUs on socket AM4 (that unlike the earlier models supports AVX2), not the cpu used here or the A8 6600k - not that those aged well either it was just a last gasp of budget apus until Ryzen APUs were ready.
if the best Cpus from AM3 and AM3+ cant play games, then fm2 is done lol. Maybe stuff like roblox or runescape.
would linux make it better ? anything like mint ?
Could do, Linux is usually less demanding on hardware.
AMD FM2+ processors struggled 10 years ago and now they are complete e-waste
I can imagine they did tbh from seeing them in action.

"...But that is not gonna affect the gameplay of this system at all..."
Oi!
Spoiler alert!
:D :D :D

Looks great.
TechLabUK made an eBay "Gaming" rig. xD
lol Super Fast Fortnite Ebay Gaming PC.
Seriously don't bother.
NONE of FM2 or FM2+ CPU have L3 Cache. Only L2 Cache.
Any CPU without L3 Cache is effectively e-wate now be it AMD or Intel. I won't even recommend it as secondhand build.
I wouldn't recommend anyone building with them either tbh. Just fun for us to play with more than anything.
@@TechLabUK if I were you, I will salvage all Gold raw metals from that entire system.
E-Waste can be worth more than the actual device, thanks to the gold being used in semiconductor.
