  • We take the opportunity to build one more project in the early winter season, a sawmill shed. Built with freshly milled lumber from the sawmill of course. With the posts fastened and aligned, we place and connect the beams with ties. Next up is rafters and roofing.

To save your back mount a 2000lb electric winch above the log deck with about 8' of chain on it. Wrap it twice around the log and it won't slip or put marks in a finished side. Worked a treat on the 120+ year old circular sawmill I had a chance to run. Also a leaf blower is your best friend after milling for cleanup before everything freezes. 👍

Nothing more rewarding than sawing your own logs for your projects. And keep those used blades handy and be sure to give them a good wipe with some WD-40 lots of life left in those. Put the sharpener and setter on the Christmas wish list. You guy rock, and let’s hear a big Whoot Whoot for the tractor. Looking forward to the next video.

Used motor oil on a rag to wipe the blades down. A couple felt wipes rubbing the blade with a drip of diesel mounted on the mill will prevent (minimize) the sap buildup on the blades. Woodmizer has a franchise in Anchorage. They may offer sharpening. Much cheaper than buying the equipment given the number of bands they are likely to use.

I am old so I get to leave the mother hen comment. Build an insulated box to mount to an interior beam. Determine what you need and stock it with all the sawmill tools that you need on site and a
good first aid kit. I really admire the way you work together so well and how much you have accomplished. It is such beautiful country that I will never see in person because I live in the desert and would freeze like a popsicle in the first ten minutes. Your videography is great and the next best thing to being there. Thanks for sharing your processes and wonderful spirit. Stay safe and warm!

I especially loved the first couple minutes of this video. It was like mother nature getting herself ready for a long winter's nap. I really do look forward to your video's and I love how you two work together. My wife and I are both 73 years of age and, of course, we can't do a lot of the things we used to. Even though my body won't allow me to cut down trees, chop wood and all of the other things that I used to do, I get to watch you two work at building your new homestead and it's just therapeutic to see. Can't wait till spring to see you make your new garden and get the shop enclosed. Wishing you both a wonderful Thanksgiving next week.

Nicely done. And in single digits temps is proof of just how tough you both are. I don't even like checking the mail when it gets that cold. Tip for Eric: A welding table. I picked up a cheap one, and easier strikes, ideal grounding, clamping of the metal, resulting in better beads, and overall just a better end product.
