The incredible, one and only, Mr. Ralph Mooney. The greatest Pedal Steel player that the world has ever seen in my opinion. Got to meet him backstage once. The man was so nice and very humble, he asked me why I wanted his autograph (as the crowd backstage mobbed around Waylon). I said, "because you're the best steel player in the world, sir!". I'd swear he just smiled a tiny bit and maybe even blushed a little. RIP Ralph Mooney, and thank you for sharing your wonderful gifts.
Live videos of Waylon prior to '79 are generally the best. This is the cream of the crop. Showcases the raw talent that put him and the Waylors on top.
Waylon Jennings was a hell of a great artist who could sing write songs and he could also play the shit out of his telecaster I love waylon he's my all time favorite artist by far
You are also witnessing one of the three most innovative pedal steel guitarists in music history, Ralph Mooney. Essential to Waylon’s sound. The other two being Jimmy Day and Buddy Emmons.
The Telecaster he his playing is an early 50’s Tele that his band gifted him when he played at a club called JD’s in Phoenix in the 60’s complete with the custom leather wrap. If you look closely at the wrap you’ll find a hand tooled rose pattern in it just like his guitar strap. He would have two of these guitars, one with a white pick guard and one with a black pick guard. A few years after he passed the family decided to auction off the black pick guard Tele , Nicole Kidman would purchase it for her husband Country Star and one heck of a player in his own right Keith Urban. So it’s NOT “just a telecaster with a wrap” there is a story behind it that makes it a very special guitar. The Family still has the white guard tele that he is playing in this performance.
I think he may have had more than one with a white pick guard because I’ve seen earlier performances where the guitar looks a bit discoloured and slightly rougher then later ones where it looks brand new
There were 5 that he always played on stage. There were many that he had made just to give to friends and charity events. The black pick guard was a Broadcaster. The family did not auction off the Broadcaster. Waylon gave the Broadcaster to a friend of his, Reggie Young. Waylon said that the guitar was just too heavy for him. Reggie auctioned it off and Nicole Kidman bought it for $98.5k.
Really enjoyed that, not anything outrageous, his voice, storytelling, rugged dude. Band sounds good, I could make a listening habit of that steel guitar.
Yes waylon playing lead with that telecaster and Ralph Mooney on the Steele guitar was absolutely perfect 100% and Richie on those drums.. waylons whole entire band in the 70s were totally insane everybody was on point never missed a beat!!
I love his music Waylon Jennings. I first started listening to him when I was in kindergarten. I met Waylon and his wife Jessi Colter. Waylon was a huge country singer in the 70s and 80s and into the 90s he started playing bass for Buddy Holly in the 50s I saw Waylon in concert twice both shows we're epic. I even have a stack of LP records of his.
I just watched this again. Do u remember watching Dukes of Hazard?? The opening song for every episode showed just that guitar & Waylons hands playing it. "Just a good ol boy"!
Waylons music is all really good.... but his live stuff.... oooff it's so so good. Check out the song "Clyde" there's alot different performances pick any. He goes back and forth with thr steel and bass, you'll like it
One thing I know about that guitar is that his hands, and that guitar is shown on the opening them to the television series, DUKES OF HAZARD, in the 70s and 80s.
Highly Recommend - Rose in Paradise! Waylon guitar work….when you hear it, you know it’s Waylon. Hail the Outlaws! Waylon had a couple guitars but they were all the same. Keith Urban has one of his guitars.
Waylon said in an interview that that is a hand-made leather case around the body of his guitar because the actual body of the guitar is all beat to hell
Yeah, somebody out west made that leather covered guitar for him early in his career. It kind of became his trademark. ********* He had a pretty heavy coke addiction at that time. There are other clips from that show where you can tell he's pretty high, but he maintained fairly well. Waylon wasn't much of a drinker & didn't like to be around drunks. He didn't smoke pot because "he didn't see the point of "sitting around grinning for hours." He had serious speed/cocaine habit for 21 years; he quit cold turkey in 1984. He's only 38 in that video but the drugs made him look older.
You guys are right, he looks really worn out here. He was drinking and drugging all throughout the 70s, and you can see it in many of his performances. But he had a great voice, could pick guitar and was a genuine real dude that did it his way.
He had a huge Cocaine addiction back then that’s why he looked rough. Thank God he kicked it and continued his greatness. If you don’t know by now. Read the story about him and Buddy Holly he played Base for Buddy and gave his seat up on the plane the night the Music died
Notice how waylon smiled on that last verse ahen the harmony guy came on and just nailed it and waylon knew it,,, also that leather coated guitar was the only one made with that particular diagram on it, true story
I wanted to show my concert t shirt I have from the mid 90 waymore blues part two. When I was messaging this you were talking about his guitar his guitar was a trade mark of his also he wrote a lot of his songs.
Waylon was in Buddy Hollys band, Buddy had a guitar make the same way. before him. That's probably why. Look up Buddy Hollys guitar plays by Graham Nash here.
His guitar a Fender Telecaster had a tooled leather casing. It was his basic moniker and was on his trucks, albums etc. If you go back and find a "Dukes of Hazard" show the intro was Waylon and his tooled leather telecaster.
he had his guitars wrapped in hand tooled leather so his buckles didn't scratch the backs and i think he got that from Buddy Holly who did the same with his acoustic
Not a big country fan but there are some I really love and Waylon Jennings is one of them and some of the best musicians in the world are country musicians FYI struggle Jennings a rap singer is his grandson, Waylon was a big on drinking also he was a diabetic God bless
Great live track! Waylon was the real deal! My brother, Steve Young wrote “Lonesome, On’ry, & Mean”. This song is really about getting clean and sober. Waylon kind of changed a bit of the lyrics as well as the beat/tempo. But Steve was not sure if Waylon knew the original, true intention/meaning of it. Anyway, Waylon loved Steve’s singing and did a great take on this song. This song was the title of one of Waylon’s albums released in 1973. Check out Steve Young’s version, it’s different.
I read where Wayland admitted that throughout most of the 70s he did about $1,000 worth of coke a day do the math it was hardcore but I'm sure that led him to an early grave sad but that was life for a lot of entertainers back in that era
The song in some parts was about cocaine waylon jennings used to use cocaine back then and waylon jennings is my favorite since I was little and he will always be my favorite
Shure 57 and 58 were made both for vocals, and amps. In my early years I used a 58 for vocals, and a 57 for my amp. I had a very booming voice, when I sang, so I, too, would leave room, so I didn't blow up the board. Also, with a deep voice, it left room for more treble. Mics have come so far, but a good Shure still works.
Love the bangs comment! 😆 I must say though, Waylon rocked his bangs. And yes, he was living " the lifestyle ". But how good did they sound!? Btw, I subscribed. ❤️✌️
That look is cocaine. Lol Waylon is the Original Outlaw of Country Music. Ive Always Been Crazy is another Great One. Hell, all of his music is great. There'll never be another Waylon. My favorite by far.
No Hank doesn't have that guitar ,Shooter has it..Waylon had 5 that I know of and Keith Urban has one of them..Hank probably has one that Waylon gave him..
Hey dude why don't you play some freaking base like at the end of your video for us something like that you know give us a sample of something? It'd be cool.
He had many leather guitars but only one favorite that his son shooter has and keith urban has one that his wife bought for 100 thousand at his auction
Absolutely not ,Waylon wouldn't let anyone play in his band that wasn't playing real and live..Waylon Jennings was true to his word about anything he said and thats why Nashville knew they got what he said..no b.s..

There’s nothing I like better than a good steel guitar player. 🔥❤️☮️👵🏼
Thanks for doing some Waylon! Can't really go wrong with him!
My favorite album of Waylon's is WAYMORES BLUES. In particular his song OLD TIMER great storyline and telling if you'd care to listen on your own.
If you ever watch the intro to the Dukes of Hazard, you'll see that guitar again and him singing.
Great reaction! "I've always been crazy" by Waylon is another good one
Highly Recommend - Rose in Paradise!

Waylon customized his Stratocasters with leather. The pedal steel guitarist is quite famous too, Ralph Mooney.

He might have been on cocaine. He had a $1500 per day cocaine habit in the late 70s. Finally got clean in 84
