- A video looking at painting a silicon sculpture I created for Steampunks in Space at the National Space Centre Leicester UK. I paint the piece using Psycho Paint from Smooth On and also sort out some costume pieces.

Also for hair punching use a crown needle it allows you to punch a 5-8 follicles of hair at once with even spacing. When doing eyebrows and eyelashes use a manual curling iron they look like needle nose pliers you can heat up and use it to curl

Wow! I saw this at Steampunks in Space, it looks amazing. It's difficult to appreciate just how much work goes into making something so detailed, but I think your video series shows it well. I love to see the process of how a sculpture comes to life, I'll definitely be checking out more of your art :)

blue.... it cancels orange which is basically the color of the silicone (skin). So, by adding blue you are desaturating the hotness of the orange. Skin is not orange (unless you're the President of the U.S. currently) so blue is good for toning down the saturation of the orange. Complementary colors desaturate each other. blue cancles orange. red cancels green. purple cancels yellow. etc.

Awesome video thank you. The white spirits you refer to, is that mineral spirits? I know toluene is similar to lacquer thinner. I'm experimenting with psycho paint and want to make some realistic body parts.
Thanks! Yeah it's called white spirit in the UK, mineral spirits in the US.
Ah interesting, I have some lacquer thinner, but toluene isn't readilyb available in the UK whereas I can buy white spirit in the hardware store.

Thanks dude, no I don't work in film. I have done a few short films here and there. I enjoy aspects of that but I probably wouldn't want to do it full time.

The Dark Power just a quick one mate do you have a good link on where to get good Eyes as I've started a Alien Gray with monster, clay, it's only a small project about 6 inches
Are there any silicone paints that aren't translucent? I've been using your method and it takes forever to paint some masks.
The only ones I've seen that aren't translucent are mould making silicons. It might be worth watching the psycho paint video on the smooth on website though as I think they do mix up a fairly thick colour mix.
This might be a stupid question, but why use Psycho Paint as a base instead of just the same platinum cured silicon? I've painted silicone faces before using silicon, pigment and thinner. What advantage does Psycho Paint offer?
Yeah it's a good point. Maybe a question for smooth-on really. This was my first time doing this with platinum silicon (and it was a commission rather than a project for myself) so I just followed the 'official' way of doing things. I suspect simply mixing up some more dragon skin may well work fine, but I've not tried it.
I used to mix up oil paints and silicon bathroom sealant when painting tin silicon, but that won't work for platinum of course.
Can this paint be used in regular rubber?
There are lots of different types of rubber so it depends what you mean by regular rubber. My guess is it might not adhere to something like shoe rubber but I've not tried.
i've been trying to paint with psycho paint too but it wont cure! i dont really understand why it wont ... any advice? i use equal parts A and B and a TINY bit of pigment to colour it... Could it not be curing because the mixture is too thick?
Hi. I know that platinum cure silicon (which is what the Psycho Paint base is I think) is inhibited by tin cure silicon and also latex. So if you were painting on to a tin cure silicon piece, or have mixed the paint while wearing latex gloves, that could have an effect. I presume you're using silpig pigments too - it's difficult to say without knowing the specifics of what you're doing. I would say that Smooth-on are really helpful with this sort of thing, so worth getting in touch with them.
What do you think of an idea I have for a steampunk Cane shaft made to look like someone just ripped a steam pipe right off the wall and starting using it as a Cane?
Yeah cool idea and wouldn't be too difficult to put together using stuff from the hardware store I reckon.
The Dark Power yep it should be easy,but do I go with plastic and metal and paint the plastic parts to look like metal(for the parts that don't come in plastic) or go all metal?
I'd go all metal - getting a decent metal effect with paint can be tricky.

Was Steampunks in Space an event or is it a long-running exhibition? It's been over 6 months since I was at the Space Centre. Where in the world are you based? You're not in Brum by any chance are you?
Hey Chris. Steampunks in Space is an annual event - it's every november, been running about 5 years now. I'm down in Surrey, just outside london.
Fair enough, if you were in Birmingham I'd probably be knocking on your door one day to help me cast some of my sculpts. At the moment I'm doing my best to do Hoggle from Labyrinth but since it's a gift for my sister I haven't put it on social media yet. Other things I need to cast one day are a 1/2 scale Compsognathus dinosaur and Le Chuck from Monkey Island plus plenty more.

I've been testing psycho paint with white spirit but the surface remains tacky after days of waiting. Have you come across this problem?
Hi. No I've not found that. You could try adding some talc to try and reduce the tackiness.
The Dark Power Yup I've been using talc but it's so frustrating having this problem when other people don't get it. Not sure what it is! I've tried everything! The yours was completely tack free? I've tried painting on eco flex and also platsil gel 10 with the same problem. It cures fully but has a tackiness. God damn it lol.
Yeah I feel your pain! I've had various silicones and resins refuse to fully cure in the past, it's really annoying. I did recently have some dragon skin refuse to cure. In that case I think I added too much silc pig or too much thixo. I don't know if psycho paint might have the same issue with pigment? Only thing I can think of. I know they recommend painting the dragon skin with a few days of it being cast too.
How did you get to use the other pigments? Didn't they dry up and become jelly like?
Well you have about 45 mins before things start setting so you have enough time to use them.
The Dark Power At 6:29 your pigments got into a jelly form. Did you waste money? How did you get to use the rest of the pigments?
I'd used them before that. But yeah I mixed up too much psycho paint base. I mention this in the video.
The Dark Power Noo The pigments did you get to use the other colors? Or did you waste money and had to buy a new set? Because as I saw, they turned jelly like.
