Really. Even before Eck gets to the feats prescribed to the character I'm sitting there wondering how reliable the novelization is as a source when it omits one of his most distinctive mannerisms. With most of, if not all of the General's feats being taken from that one source it really hurts the assessment Eck lays down. Now Chief on the other hand, a lot of his feats from the novels have been echoed elsewhere.
But here's the problem... If he has any route to his lungs He couldn't survive vacuum like he does in RotS. Possibly, he just coughs... Just cause.
@Matthew O'Rosco It's actually show in the Clone Wars Cartoon. When Grievous was escaping with Palpatine, Mace Windu used the force and crushed Grievous' chest. After this Grievous develops the coughing fits. Here is a link to the video.

General Grevious in canon is a push over and a pansy. In George Lucas's own words "he is more of a 'mwahaha' twirls his mustache and barely gets away kind of villain." Canon Grevious can not even beat padawans and is rarely if ever shown to be a competent fighter or person. He has a terrible win loss ratio and most of the time the only way he wins is with utter bs or by not fighting himself in the first place. His body is fragile, getting broken often, and he is a complete idiot with a lack of any sense of strategic value.
General Grevious in Legends (like how he is in 2003) is a nigh unstoppable murdering machine. He is a genuis assassin who killed dozens to hundreds of jedi with their clone companies on his own. He is a strategic genius as well, having fairly earned the rank of general after proving himself to be a tactical genius who managed to turn the tide of the war so hard in favor of the Confederacy that he almost won a war that he was never supposed to be able to win. His armor was almost unbreakable, taking blaster shots from star ships and even grabbing lightsaber blades with his bare hands at one point. He has moved so quickly and so silently on multiple occasions to where to others it appeared as though he teleported. He is confident in his abilities but not cocky, he never underestimates his opponents and has a near 100% accuracy rating when it comes to judging how powerful a foe might be. There was even a time he kept up with, and pushed back, mace winder in combat even though the general was heavily weighed down by magnets. He was also a powerful warrior who lived for combat nearly his entire life before becoming a cyborg. During training sessions, Count Dooku even found it difficult to win the duels, often having to pull out secret techniques to end the battle quickly. There was even one point where the general spun his lightsabers so quickly and in such a way he created a bubble of pulsing light around him.
The only thing both General Grevious have in common is the fact they are easily annoyed by droids, just for vary different reasons.

Brian Wallace starships are laser based weapons. Lasers are light based. Projectile weapons use physical projectiles. Not only are they way way faster moving, they bring in physical force on impact. And if chief has a plasma weapon, it’ll short circuit grevious whole system and burn his remaining protected organs

@@thisisntfine6729 yes they can. Bullets exist in star wars but they are called slug throwers. Jedi have trouble blocking them as the saber will melt the metal and send it flying into the Jedi but armored Jedi or those with strong force powers and strong bodies can power through it.
Previously, however, can tank hits from starfighters, missile launchers, force attacks and one attack that tore apart his army or b2 battle droids (which are known to be tough among anyone but force users.)
However grevious simply walked through all of it.
The Jedi shown in the clip was caught off guard and fired upon from a large force that knew how he fought.
Besides Jedi can react to bullets, lasers, missiles, etc.
He, in fact, fought 2 council members along with 3 other Jedi and beat them with such ease he didn't have to deploy his extra arms.
The only time he did was either when he was on a schedule and didn't want to waste time or when he faced a real challenge.
Grevious could easily stand there and wait for chief to run out of ammo before slicing him to bits.

The thing about blasters though and it's roughly like playing baseball they don't move much faster than a baseball does as far as I know I could be wrong but if we're judging based off of a visual representation you don't need precognition to block them you can see him coming a mile away there Bright and glowy and they move really slow relatively speaking

You can't underestimate Chief's calculated luck. It truly makes him more likely to win ANY battle when it's considered.
Chiefs luck is not factored into arguments because its not a valid point. Thats his gimmick but its not something can be used to instantly win.

His gimmick is he can one shot anyone. Chiefs gimmick is that he's lucky.

I don’t think luck counts, but I suppose it could be translated over to Star Wars as Chief being favored by the force? Not force sensitive, but someone the force sorta favors.
It is also possible that Grievous was disadvantaged in Revenge of the Sith. In Clone Wars (2003) Grievous suffers a major chest injury from Mace, using the force to partially crush Grievous' rib cage. The injury takes place right immediately before the Battle of Coruscant. This if I remember correctly is the reason he had his cough.

I think Chief has another edge that's overlooked a lot. During the Mandalorian war with the old republic the Mandalorians were able to find a fatal in the lightsaber in that while it could deflect blaster bolts it couldn't deflect ballistic munitions (slug throwers) and they'd pass straight through and shred a Jedi at range. If Chief could get off a shot, rounds might slip between gaps in Grievous's armor.
Yeah grievous’ speed is in leaping motions as well as his “quantum” blade spinning, but I think cheif could definitely “headshot” him and blind him easily… really don’t know how eck didn’t think of this

the sheer speed that Grievous moves means that unless he's standing still, even Chief's reaction time and reflexes would not get an aimed shot at the general. Spray and pray is the only real option.

Neither Chief nor Grievous have pre-cognition. Bullets travel a lot faster than plasma bolts. Chief could definitely target different vulnerable parts of Grievous with what is essentially a 7.62x51mm rifle and a 60rd magazine and hit SOMETHING vital.
Especially the wrists. If Chief can land a couple shots on Grievous’s wrists and disarm him, the fight is over at that point but Chief will outmaniever Grievous, get a light saber, and win easily.

I think Chief is one of the few non-force-sensitive humans out there who actually could and would be able to topple Grievous for one very simple reason. Dooku taught and trained the general that: "-you must have fear, surprise, and intimidation on your side. But if any one element is lacking, it would be best for you to retreat." But against Sierra-117 he would be lucky to even secure one of these advantages.
Darth Vanquish agreed skip this was probably run after multiple accurate shots to vital points besides precognition Grievous nah man Master Chief got upgraded by the librarian remember he can do more stuff we just haven't seen it yet
It was specifically stated that Grevious would need those three elements to take on the finest that the Jedi Order could throw at him. I don't think that MC could take on Obi-Wan, and I doubt he would be able to do much against Grevious.
Speaking canonically, John-117 fears nothing, is surprised by nothing, and dosn't cowl to intimidation, either by higher ranking officers or the deadliest of adversaries. Besides this, a well aimed "sticky" (plasma grenade) can take out anybody, and Grievous gets easily distracted when he thinks he's got the upper hand. Even the laughably inaccurate M16 assault rifle (I'd take a plasma pistol and DMR any day) can fire far faster than any blaster, and will pepper Grievous with such spread that he'd be unable to "catch" much of anything. His armour being depleted, Chief would then "pop" Grievous in the head with his Magnum, resulting in a shower of confetti to the sound of ecstatic gungan children.
Chief would probably loose to Obi-wan, but I don't see them having any need to fight one another, other than a simple competition duel to gauge one another's abilities and learn from the other's fighting styles. Although if they kept it to strictly lightsaber vs energy sword, that could be interesting.
Darth Vanquish what you need to understand is that in the Star Wars Galaxy shit gets all fucked up the moment Master Chief appearance in the Star Wars Galaxies there will be a disturbance in the force One powerful enough for both Sith and Jedi to feel it what you need to understand this Master Chief's massive amount of luck could actually be in the force when brought to the Star Wars universe his natural abilities as a child shows this as much for the machine part nothing was taken out of Master Chief just added on metal was grafted two stones to make him stronger a perfect Target for both Sith and Jedi and an already trained and lethal Warrior now able to tap into the force because of his presence in the Star Wars universe although unknowingly one would simply need to train them how to wield the blade and wield his abilities with the force as good as Master Chief is I see him siding with the Sith but for his goal of protecting Humanity mainly because of his distrust of aliens dude this would be an awesome fanfiction
BlackEpyon Grievous has superior speed to most sentient beings but I'm assuming Chief is using UNSC weapons. Grievous has dodged bullets easily in legends and Vader has in cannon. I think Grievous is meant to be faster than Vader, even in cannon.

writers are quick to throw around measurements like "20ms" without any understanding of what that would mean/look like.

The suit isn't just something he puts on, it's linked to his brain and neural system. What he thinks and reacts to the suit does automatically, the suit kills anyone who isn't a spartan 2. They tested it with normal marines in one book and it crushed all of his bones because of those sudden movements.
You have to remember Chief isn't just a normal man but has insanely dangerous augments that killed a fuck ton of other candidates in the Spartan 2 program, he was also one of if not the best Spartans in that program. They can run on average 70 KMPH, and yes have the reaction times as fast as 20ms because of what I said earlier.
They are also more accurate with their weapons because the suit links to their brain and their optics, add an AI like cortana and it becomes even better.

the worst I've seen so far tend to come from comic books where writers accidentally have characters going multiple times the speed of light because they don't know the terms they're using. And I'm not talking about Superman, I'm talking Tony Stark and co.

And the games are known to break away from established canon for sake of gameplay. Which is why you're marine buddies don't get their chests blown out by a single plasma bolt, or why you don't get completely vaporized by errant Wraith shots.

I think you doubt the damage that Chief could do with that rifle.
His aim is effectively perfect, and i don't think Grievous is able to see individual bullets. He wouldn't be able to deflect them (even if he could see them) and if he hits them before they hit him then he's only going to superheat each shot before he's hit.
I also don't see Grievous getting out of the way of Chief shooting at him. Chief is, effectively, a perfect shot. - and Grievous' chest is quite open.
Assuming Chief or cortana spot the rather obvious weakness, i think the General is doomed.
I agree that if Grievous gets close then Chief is basically done. I think he'd probably be stronger and his reactions at least close enough to fight back if Grievous was only using two arms - but even then, having range in a melee is extremely effective, so only having a knife or his fists isn't going to cut it. I feel like you're heavily underestimating chief. It appears grievous still relies on his normal senses and his eyes are never shown to be protected. Chief has never shown reluctance to use dirty tactics to win fights, not to mention that bullets are much faster than the lazers in star wars not has grievous ever encountered a weapon that fires as fast as an ar. Chief knows his armors limitations so I highly doubt he'd go anywhere near the lightsabers, as he'd treat them more like energy swords. I can't see grievous win against the demon. Also just want to point out fighting styles differ tremendously, grievous twirls his lightsabers trying to be flashy while chief doesn't try doing anything flashy canonically. The flashiest thing he's ever done was jump onto the prophets chair and start pummeling him.

I completely agree, but for different reasons. It's mentioned that Chief is able to SOMETIMES dodge bullets, and assuming Grievous is only slightly faster, I'm not sure he'd be up against the rapid-fire MA5B. However, ONE lightsaber strike would likely take out Chief, since lightsabers are (as mentioned) equitable to an Energy Sword which can cut through any Spartan in a single strike, energy shields or no. I think it boils down to stealth: whoever gets the first shot wins. And though Grievous is stealthy, Chief's training and tactics are far superior. Eck mentioned that Chief outstrips Grievous in tactics, and this situation is pitting skill against skill.

One: light sabres cant fully stop metal based ammunition which is what chief would be using.
Two: durosteel is also susceptible to metal rounds and i think the gun or pistol chief would be using hold armour piercing rounds as well.
How i see it the General starts out by sprinting at Chief pulling out his sabers, meanwhile Chief stars walking backwards pulling out his pistol and empties the clip aimed at the General's head. He manages to avoid a few rounds but either one cracks his skull, or once he is within a few dozen feet Chief takes out his rifle and unloads into him filling him full of lead.
The General could try zig-zagging or jumping over or into cover, but even though the General has a lifetime's experience sword fighting, the Chief has a lifetime's experience shooting. No matter what he does he will be taking hits the whole time, either he takes too much damage and is disabled, or he is outright killed. The only way i could see him winning is if he can close the ground

I’d like to mention grievous was actually a marksmen. Before he became a cybord grievous was the greatest markmens in Star Wars lore, also carrying a blaster on him. If need be he isn’t unfamiliar at fighting at range. I also find it a bit hard to believe chief could track him well enough to land consistent shots on him. As even Jedi can barley track grievous when he’s moving at full speed.

I’m sorry but watching this, almost half the video is pure “general grievous this and that” but only drops a few minutes talking about the chief. He pulls all of this info about legends grievous that honestly sounds ridiculous even for Star Wars but it legends so that’s a thing but barely scratches at info about master chief. I’m not saying I entirely disagree with the outcome but a fair explanation for both sides should have been there and I don’t feel it was. And I’m sorry but as good as many of the legends books are, I think we can all agree that most of them are pretty far fetched when it comes to statistical information

The lightsabers are extremely hot so it doesn't parry or block them instead it instantly melts them, still though chiefs insane precision and his extremely quick movement of the hands to point the gun somewhere else would be so fast grievous would have a hard time noticing he changed his position let alone see the path of the bullets to block them, grievous is fucked 11/10

Now this is the perfect match up between two universes. You have both sides using the best mechanics and Cyborg technology of their Universe to fight each other. Granted Grievous does have his lightsabers but in reality lightsabers do nothing against bullets so it seems even though one weapon is far more powerful they are pretty evenly matched in that scale. Loved this video!

And when you watch the battle with Obi-Wan and Grievous on the landing platform it shows that even though his armor is complete it still has holes. That means that those bullets which is 60 rounds coming down range within about a 10 second period of time, that much molten lead going through the lightsaber regardless if he's stopping them or not is going to get him eventually. Plus his eyes are still organic so the molten metal could get in his eyes and that would definitely take him down a notch.
I would assume a lightsaber can boil/vaporize a bullet because their are bullets in star wars called slug throwers and if they could get past lightsabers then cis troops would have had them.
I think Chief would notice this automatically and he would immediately start to shoot at Grievous's face to make the molten metal getting his eyes. And also another thing Grievous is not a force sensitive and we honestly don't know if he calculates his deflection with the color of the Blaster bolt or if he's actually calculating the object flying through the air. Because if he needs actual color to be able to distinguish the Blaster bolt to deflected it could possibly mean that he can't see bullets flying through the air. If that question never gets answered then it still would be unknown but as it stands a lightsaber would actually hurt Grievous more than help him. And that would actually be the way to defeat him is with the melted bullets. But with legends, Chief wouldn't have time to make a plan because he would be dead. 1v 1 no previous intel would be in favor of grievous

I think Chief has the strength advantage here, Fireteam Osiris was breaking through boulders like they weren't even there in the opening cutscene of H5, and Chief was beat Locke in H2H, although that was most likely through skill considering it looked like they were somewhat evenly matched in brawn.
Plus, if the sidearm John has is the Halo 1 Magnum, then all bets are off.

One significant problem is that you aren't accounting for the fact that Grievous can't block bullets. They're orders of magnitude faster than the blaster bolts, and Chief's supreme accuracy can certainly allow him to hit the heart or eyes of the general. We also don't even know if you can cut through shielded Mjolnir armor with a lightsaber, at least with a strike or two. Also, with Chief's run speed, how is Grievous supposed to close the distance?

Grievous is able to dodge force pushes in the heat of battle and he can strike 20 times a second going all out so i think he'd be able to close the distance quite easily.

"With 4 sabers and doing 20 swings per second equals 5 swings per saber. That is a single swing every .2 seconds. Chief have .02 reaction speed without cortana, armor and this was right after augmentation at age 14 so by now it's a lot shorter. Melee combat, chief may combat grievous just as good, if not better, as kenobi. Chief can react to ballistic and maybe even beam rifles.

BTW durasteel have been made canon in halo verse from the book warfleet as orbital defensive platforms, as many of u may know, Cairo station from halo 2.

We all know a MA5Broken rifle can take down chief in a number of shots after shield breaks and if Grevious limbs, torso, and face armor is only of an upgraded version of durasteel, which is weaker than titanium, we can now assume bullets in Halo can pierce through a majority of Star wars main durasteel armor after a number of shots, thus making their statement of impervious to ballistics false when they go against halo ballistics even though there is controversy of halo balistics. And if not impied, pierce through GG's limbs, torso, and face with a number of shots.
This took a lot of going back and forth through a multitude of forums and wikis. This is through simple logic as we are given material hierarchy. Titanium is univerally accepted through many sci-fi so we have that to back up on. Unless stars wars in just complete fiction/fantasy (and titanium is a separate entity from IRL) compared to sci fi that is halo then we can go by this.

Like you said, Chief is basically a genius. A genius with a genius, even for an AI, companion. Cortona would analyze Grievous and detect his weak innards. Even a human, all be it a Jedi, was able to pull his chest apart before he could react. So Chief's best, and most likely course, would be to sprint tword Grievous and throw his weapon at him distracting him. Tackling him and shoving his sidearm in his chest and opening fire. This move would not at all be out of character for Chief and would throw off Grievous who would expect a rifleman to run.
To be fair, Obi-Wan had the force with him. And Star Wars humans are actually VERY strong. Commander Bacara (I think it was him) and his entire clone legion was able to beat an army of battle droids just by tearing them apart.
Edit: Also, in what instance would Grievous just stand there while someone runs up at him? Canon Grievous, maybe, but Legends Grievous is a tactician, and he was able to keep himself from being sensed in the force from 6 Jedi. Grievous would most likely ambush Chief. Chief may be fast enough to move out of the way, but Grievous's legs are completely robotic. He'd just leap right at him and chop his head off.

Ok here's how I see it, Grievous has speed over Cheif, but Cheif has one thing Grievous doesn't, he's a one-man planetary defense system. Cheif can master ANY weapon near instantly, as well as adapt to any situation almost as quick.
Yes Grievous can out speed Cheif, but he can't overpower Chief in Physical combat, at least not easily. Chief also has a multitude of weapons at his disposal. If Chief got ahold of a Droid blaster rifle or ANY kind of explosive he could easily take off one of Grievous' arms and steal away a lightsaber. Couple Cheif's adaptabilty with an extremely intelligent AI and cloaking Grievous would die to his own lightsaber.
As we see in Halo Reach, Noble 6 and Emile both take SEVERAL Energy Sword wounds before they go down, they were Spartan 3's, not nearly as tough or durable as Spartan 2's. Chief could easily take a stab or 2 from the general. Plus if Chief has plasma grenades on him, which after Halo 3 he usually would considering the alliance between the Sangheli and UNSC, one sticky nade to Grievous' chest and it's bye-bye internal organs. Pretty uncivilized but an effective method nonetheless.
Keep in mind this is only speaking in a 1v1 scenario, no outside help for either one aside from weapon pickups for Chief as that's what he's known for. Then there's the Spartan Laser, I'm pretty sure that if Chief got hold of an Endgame or Selene's Lance Spartan Laser, Grievous would go down real quick. It's all a matter of how the situation plays out.

Honestly even if Chief were to be downed by Grievous, doesn't the Spartan I MK VI armor also contain a self-destruct equivalent to a nuke? Sure it's being a sore loser, but when has Grievous ever had honor to be repayed with? However I do think that ESPECIALLY with Halo 5's weaponry Cheif would wipe the floor with Grievous.

lol first of all what says said bullets can't be deflected? Secondly the ammo only travels so fast, and Grevious is MUCH faster than both Chief, and any of his ammo. he would never hit Grevious, especially at range. His only chance if he had one is up close and that is pretty much suicide.

zephiro l you can’t deflect bullets, if you block a bullet with a lightsaber it becomes melted metal moving at the same speed as the bullet. And with chief’s speed and accuracy as well as the aid of cortana he could easily hit grievous’ eyes and blind him, making the kill easy.
And the bullets are actually explosive in the novel

The Legends books have a terrible habit of exaggerating the abilities of droids or artificial limbs beyond anything shown in the movies. If it were possible to make droids that moved that fast, then battle droids would slaughter non-droid combatants.
If it's a suprise drop in arena fight with Chief having the weapons you listed, I think he would still win. He's a good enough marksman that he could probably shoot and destroy the lightsabers in grevious's hands, especially if Grevious aproaches like he did with Obi-Wan.
Then while Grevious might have a speed advantage, we see Obi-Wan pry open Grevious's armor with his bare hands.
So Grevious's armor might have great anti-blaster properties, but it's physical durability is shit. I think in hand to hand, Grevious wouldn't have the strength or toughness to damage Chief's armor before Chief ripped Grevious apart.
Yeah... I dislike how the books tend to make everything ridiculously overpowered compared to what's on film. Just doesn't make sense that the empire wouldn't use droid armies if they were capable of being that far above stormtroopers.
Battle droids are cheap. Commando droids, IG droids, assassin probe droids, droidekas, and droid bounty hunters have displayed similar feats.
The exaggerated droid capabilities don't even matter.
20 strikes a second means each strike takes 50ms. Chief is stated as having 20ms or faster reaction time. Even cutting the strike time in half to account for the recovery after each strike, MCs reaction time is still faster than grievous can attack.

Either give the chief an energy sword/Spartan laser, or they both go at it hand to hand. Otherwise it's totally unfair.
Technically the AR could outdo Grevious, due to halo human weaponry there equipped with armor peircing explosive rounds to have better effect against covie shields, meaning any shot that hits Grevious would probably cut through his armor and destroy his insides
And any rounds that Grevious deflects would just be reduced to molten metal, meaning Grievous gets hit by super heated molten metal blobs going faster than any blaster bolt

One thing that I should mention is that kinetic weapons are really affective against light sabers seeing ass it doesn’t deflect the bullet but creates shards of lead. And if he uses a shot gun than there’s no way that greves could deflect all the bullets
I would give Chief this vote purely because of how we know lightsabers react to solid rounds, like the bullets fired buy the Assault rifle we give chief. Even if grievous blocks the shot, there would still be molten metal travelling at super sonic speeds, flying at almost certainly his vulnerable biological parts and weak spots in his cyborg body.
Even Stormtrooper armor is basically invulnerable to slugthrowers (Verpine weaponry excepted)

For reference you would need a sub millisecond response time and being almost 40 meters away to doge 1 bullet and that's not taking into consideration how chief has full auto and can actively track his movements.

Grievous wouldn't be able to deflect Chief's bullets, he'll have to rely on his body armour to tank the shots (never a good idea). The general would still be at an advantage, but it wouldn't be a one-sided 9/10 victory.

Yep it was. They simply used boombas or what those shiny blue balls are called and these pretty much short-circuited poor Grievous. Count Dooku had to quickly lure and capture Anakin Skywalker and they simply exchanged prisoners so nothing really happened. Stupid epizode indeed.

Funnily, I saw an cross edit battle of Master Chief vs. General Grievous. I think it's silly to assume Chief would use a simple AR. Master Chief would choose the proper weapon to fight Grievous, and it would be a Gravity Hammer. The Gravity Hammer takes no skill to use in melee combat, and merely needs to be slammed down close enough to the enemy to kill them with gravitationally-induced concussive force. This completely takes whatever skill Grievous has with lightsabers, EVEN THE LEGENDS VERSION, and throws it out the window.
It should also be noted that a Spartan II's shields can survive at least one grenade blast, meaning Chief could do a 'Guts' move, and purposely hurt himself to open Grievous up to attack. A grenade jump, that also knocks Grievous on his back, followed by AR fire midair, and then finally a landing with a stomp to the face, should be enough to finish Grievous. The only chance Grievous would have is to throw his lightsabers, but he does not have the ability to call them with the Force if he misses, or the sabers don't go through the shields immediately when tossed at instead of stabbed through Chief's armor.
