Recording your acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time with only one microphone is not only possible - it can sound really good!
The key is to understand what type of microphone to use and where to place it.
In this video I show you exactly what gear you need to pull this off and we test a few different microphone placements so you can hear the difference just a few inches can make.
The key to a balanced guitar and vocal recording with one mic is getting the height and distance right and I'll show you how to get that optimal placement.

"Microphones are like flashlights." You, sir, are brilliant!
I really love this musician......he's really teaching what many good musicians like him are refusing to teach.......my God......what a human correct being
Just decided to search for a simple live streaming solution with the exact same mic. Tripped over this channel. The audio clarity of this video alone is incredible. Subscribed.
last month i recorded a singer songwriter and we used one mic into a tascam tape recorder. great decision, the vibe was everything for those recordings
I have been looking for this for days ! I wanna keep it simple. Just mic vocals guitar and that’s all. This is it. Thanks man ! Thank you for this information. I wish you all the growth. Keep on putting such amazing stuff :)
StumbleUpon just browsing UA-cam and this magnificent fella starts teaching me something I’ve been trying to learn for a long time lucky me I’m 70 so I need UA-cam And fellows like this guy I love it hope I live to 105
Been watching this channel for a long time. This song is REALLY good. I'm feelin' this one Graham.
Thanks for the tip! I totally needed this!! I have a twitch live music stream on April 11 and I needed to find a way to have my mic record both my voice and my guitar. Great job!! 👍👍🔥
Great tip, Graham! Preparing to make some scratch tracks and this will make it so much easier!
oh what a great video this is! thank you soo much! this advice is exactly what I needed
I've been using the Scarlett Studio solo for almost a year now, have experimented with recording guitar+vocals into one channel, as well as separately to get a more balanced sound, cause I was never all too satisfied with the sound quality of recording it all into one mic. so now I'm excited to take your advice. :)
Thanks Graham! I loooooooove your videos! You are THE musician's friend, brother!
So helpful! Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very professional delivery!
This is an excellent video. Exactly what I was searching for!
Than you. You ways of teaching is fabulous. Your strumming and vocal love that
*THIS LESSON IS GOLD*
thanks, very helpful. I must say I am also among those who like the first setup better, but I got the message that to adjust volumes you need to adjsut the mic distance too not positioning alone.
Thankyou so much
thank god there are people online who make things easier but with amazing results
Great video, very informative. Looking forward to the mix/processing video!
You just answered to my questions, I love your channel!
I love doing this! I've tried it a few different ways, but most recently used my rode nt2a with a close sm57 for a bit more body to the guitar. I find playing this way captures more feeling from my performance. I just recorded a cover of Audioslave's Like A Stone this way and I'm really happy with the results. Looking forward to hearing more of your tips on this.
Very helpful. I like recording a vocal and guitar at the same time because that’s how I write songs.
Looking to finally upgrade and start building a setup - thanks for the tips!!
I love this. Thanks Graham. It really gets to the heart of recording songs that makes sense to me. The notion of somehow recording a drum "track", then a bass track, then a guitar etc. just seems contrived. Certainly, I do understand overdubs and that but to capture the energy of a performance you need the "performance" to be there first. So much "musak" sounds too mechanical to me and therefore less appealing. I like to hear that vibe or groove from the players playing which is the only thing I would comment on about trying to be your own band. Without the OTHER players interacting together it loses that creative spark that USED to be the hallmark of great music. When you heard the Temptations or The Who it was that "sound," that interaction in the blending of the musical talent and inventiveness that created those songs. People now seemed more focused on recording technique and creating new sounds or plug in usage than actual songwriting and "hitting the note" that the Allman Brothers used to talk about. It's hard to put emotion into a perfectly timed, perfectly tuned medium. It's just not human. It would be like trying to paint a Picasso from a paint by numbers kit. So keep up the good work Graham your info really helps make the process easier and more natural. Peace Brother!
That sounds amazing!
I LOVE that song!
Nice vid, Graham!
This was so useful for a self taught producer like myself. Absolutely love the Incubus style of this song. Thank you!
Okay you're smart, good looking and captured my attention well with your perfectly thorough simple explanation. I'm a singer looking to record piano and vocals at the same time. Subscribed. 💎💜
Hey Graham! Thanks for consistently quality content! I am rewatching right now the 5 minutes to a better mix - ROUND 2 - from 2012, and I have a question about that intro music. I love that snare, it's so snappy and crisp and powerful, I wonder if some day you could do a thorough tutorial on processing a snare like that. Or maybe you already did and I just overlooked it among all the videos
This is what i was looking for exactly.. Recording guitar and singing at the same time. Ty..love from india❣️
Good video, told me exactly what I came for. Good presenter too, none of the annoying over enthusiasm you get on a lot of similar videos. Thanks.
Thank you. It's very good and simple instruction.
this is a high quality lesson. god bless u bro!
great vocals too man!!! thanks for this!
I really love your work...thanks man
You are so helpful! Thanks for this video :)
ANOTHER great vid!! Thanks Graham!!
Amazing video. Amazing channel. I'm so grateful!
Thank you so much for these videos 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I find it soothing how he enunciates and articulates words =)
New viewer here, man this is awesome stuff! These videos directly address every question I have about recording and building my own studio. Thank you so much! Are those Rockit monitors I see in the background?
thanks for this video - helped me a lot!
love how you make it so easy
Great vid man, thanks a bunch
This is exactly what I am looking for thank you :)
Are we going to ignore his performance? So damn good! 🖤
a good quick suggestion for the common bedroom singer/acoustic recording. the room echo was what I heard in this video, it increased as the singing got louder which makes sense. great stuff... fix the room some more, one mic and placement can work!
I've stumbled on a good mix using a small Samson desktop USB mic sitting on my desk so it's guitar level, but I point it up toward my face. I started out doing it just out of convenience to catch an idea quickly, but I like the results. I agree with those saying the first take with the mic closer to the mouth was better. Good info in this video though.
Fantastic vocal! Good originals!
Thanks Graham, very useful video!
This is just awesome. Good song too
Wow it's not often I get to a video this early! Thanks as always for the great content Graham :)
good info! I tried this on my channel and it worked great
Really it helped me to understand . Thankyou
I love the first sound the most :) at 3:44 but you only need a popfilter 👌😃
Great video.....Epic Teaching..
Thanks Graham! You're awesome!
Thank you for this one 👍🏼
rocking it graham... nice tune
This was really helpful thank you
Goooddddd...thank you so much. Looked at all over youtube. You are the man dude. Now how do I mix it with video? Iphone?
Thanks for these kind of videos... Really good content... New subscriber here
thanks, downloaded, all works!
amazing voice and tutorial
Well done, Graham!
Thank you for the great video.
fantastic video thank you so much
Very useful! God bless you! 🙌
Just curious, do you still need to use a pop filter for recording both vocals and guitar at the same time?
this is sweet sir. thank you so much
Great video, as always! And I love the song you're playing, what's the name of the it?
Thaaaank you! Finally a very good explanation! I am trying to record voice and ukulele with a single condenser (usb) but no phantom… fingerstyle and strumming in the same song… it’s hard… voice is light and soft… almost impossible with my fifine mic
Hey Graham, really like the step by step instructions, right from the beginning of the process to the end. Just wondered, when you were moving the mic further away, would you be adjusting the gain on your interface for a stronger signal?
Yes!! Love you man!
Graham you're the man! I'm going to buy a Rode nt1a!
Thorough video!
Super useful! The song has a really incubus like vibe btw! Was wondering do you have a recommendation for a decent budget mic for an out door performance? One guitar, one singer but shot outside in a quiet park. Will bring a laptop and audio interface along too but not sure what mic would be idea for this. Thanks!
awesome video!
Thanks for sharing.
That song is sick. Also, awesome video.
what song is that?
awesome thanks Graham!
Most usefull video i ever see...
Hey, thank you for such a helpful video! and you got a badass voice! are you using any other plug ins?
I was doing the same thing, for a youtube cover.
Throughout the whole figuring out process i was getting fed up because im using a focusrite i, Logic, and an ST55, but your volume is sooooo solid.
Mine isnt like that at all.
I have to assume its mic placement but also may a really nice freaking mic you have, and lastly, that im on a 2 floor thats open and leading downstairs.
This goes back to early studio engineering. Placing everything in correct position to the mic when more than one source is recorded. Although I'd probably do a 2 mic recording so each source can be balanced. This video is very good if you're only limited to one mic..
Helpful video. I am going to help an artist record their acoustic album and I've only ever recorded rap vocals I'm not familiar with this style.
is it just me or was the balance of the first try, with the mic closer to the mouth better?
I fell like the voice is a little quiet with the Final mic placement...
I agree!
But maybe some EQ on the lower end with let the vocals be heard more
I'm with you Gehirnfehler. I liked the balance when the mic was up by his mouth. I did want more low end on the guitar with that placement though. I'm more of a "Vocals-way-out-front" guy though.
Gehirnfehler Not just you, it was much better
In the verse ..yes. In the chorus the vocals would have been too loud I think.
I have all these devices and equipment already so I can start doing this now!
Very helpful advice! Thank you. would love to see recording tips for singer songwriters using iphone
Awesome video thanks alot for the tips and the free book on recording. Does it matter if the Mic is upward or upside-down or if at that distance of a foot away does it matter if you use a pop filter or not?
if I want to record my juno sounds into the daw I have to record it as audio right? using trs cables from the juno to my audio interface? or is there another way?
sorry for the noob question. any help is welcome.
Another good lesson****
Hey man, thanks for the video! I have a shure 57 and 58 which one would you recommend for recording both voice and guitar? Also, if I wanted to record electric guitar and voice is it possible to do it at the same time? Thanks!
The second channel of focusrite 2i2 is very low. I think I have to use this technique
Thank you for this video.. now i know how to record it with only condenser microphone
Thank you a lot!
Thanks Graham for this video...This really helps me.I want to put my recordings to the next level by using audiointerface, condenser mic..etc..and i want the same thing what you did in this video...ill get the same microphone you are using...Will the audio quality will become better if I use pop filter? what is the make/model of your mic stand?
This is without any EQ or compression and it sounds great!I'm running an AT4047 into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 and my input signal is muddy and just overall not very clean. As graham suggests, I'm recording with peaks at around -12 dbs, not clipping and the original input signal from the AI just sounds muddy to me.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated!
Brilliant thank you
Nice! Could you do a video in the future like this for keyboardists who want to get that organic flow and sound as well when they play and sing?
You're miking a keyboard?
yes! I support your request
Kings Worship you need a DI box (or an additional Mic ) and an audio interface with 2 or more xlr inputs.
Why not just hook it up with a midi cable? That would be the easiest and no hiss
but not if you want a live Performance with just one mic I guess
Very very useful
