They had two distinct sounds. The early Bangs with Annette and the more polished full blown four part harmonies with Micki. I liked them both. The Bangles were already performing almost every song on "All Over the Place" with Annette, when she walked out to go full time with her boyfriends band, Blood on the Saddle. That left Micki coming in right about the time they started recording the album. With some chemistry and time playing together, the band just exploded on it's next two albums, with hit after hit. Until they broke up. Some of those same issues that caused the breakup, led to a short reunion with Michael Steele around 2000. She walked out after a concert in early 2004. However, they still play great live. Annette Zilinskas has returned to take over the bass and you can catch one of their concerts in full, right here on UA-cam. 2019 The Bangles KAABOO. I will leave a link below. They still sound amazing.
I was a member of Bangles 'n' Mash International in the late '80s and early '90s; still a fan. In my opinion, Susanna looks even better now than she did back then! ❤ Are the Bangles in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame? ...and if not, why not?

She's arguably the most accomplished musician in the group as far as her instrument, she's the only one that played all her parts. Her compositions I think are the most interesting and her bass line on Nickel Romeo is one of the all time best, male or female. She's also a very good guitar player
0:02 The big mistake the Peterson sisters made was removing Kahne. Kahne's methods were unwelcome and he also overdubbed Susanna, Vicki and Debbi (not Micki). But Kahne was the only person who knew how to guide them, Rubin also understood that for the dynamics and for the very existence of the band it was appropriate that there were hits and covers sung collectively. Outside the United States until 1987 Susanna was not recognized as the leader of the band. In the collective imagination there were images of the Walk like an Egyptian video and the Hazy Shade of Winter video. After Sigerson became producer Susanna chose two of the best collaborators (Kelly and Steinberg) who had already made Madonna and Cindy Lauper stars and she truly became the biggest star of the band, however at that point the band became something very different from what it was originally and the breakup was inevitable.
@Riri-oj1zs True! But their first album was Paisley and he allowed each of them to have a hit written or sung by them. He had them all sing chorally or individually. After him, Rubin who had appreciated the success of Walk Like An Egyptian produced Haze Shade of Winter sung chorally for the film Less Than Zero. Kahne, by attracting the ire of some of the Bangles, avoided tensions between them. After they pushed him away, tensions exploded. He was the band's lightning rod.
I really haven't heard their new albums yet but I do like listening to the Different Light album cause I think this album was their greatest accomplishment with great songs from all 4 ladies!

The other girls were hot, too, but next to Susanna anyone seems average. but they can't be too upset about it. Her beauty played a major part in the band's success.
If the most recognized characteristic of a rock band is beauty I don‘t think Susanna can be too happy about this either. I am convinced that this is not the case otherwise Susanna‘s solo career would have taken off after the success of the Bangles. Susanna‘s beauty was a boomerang that the intelligence of their first producers managed to defuse.
I think that they needed a manager that would keep the press and record company far enough away to allow them to be themselves. Attending Debbi's Wedding should have been a must for the two. A nice outdoor weeding in England would have helped them to just enjoy themselves and get back to being friends. When they did split and Susanna went out as solo artist, she felt lost without the others. A good manager would have sat down with her, and reminded her that she shone best with her bandmates. They were all different, but together they were amazing. A solo career can always come later for someone like Susanna. With a manager that understood how important it was to not wear them out, and that they didn't need anything more as a band, because they had it all already. They would have lasted much longer. Attending Debbi's wedding would have made it possible to take a break without there being hard feelings. They would have been able to get back together without having to heal deep wounds. It was a huge mistake to take Debbi off of her drumkit, and the others to audition to sing verses. They could have worked that out themselves. I applaud Susanna for doing her best to mend fences, and her husband for seeing how important it was to help find a way to get them back together by singing a song for one of his movies. Their performance in Pittsburgh, 1986 is all that you need to watch to see that they were superstars. Each of them.
Debbie was the one forcing divisions in the band because she had become jealous of Susanna. Walk like an Egyptian was not "Debbie's Song", she didn't write it, it wasn't written for her, and she didn't bring it to the band. David Kahne, who was the producer of the album, brought the song to the band and decided who would sing which verses. He obviously made the right choices, as the song was a massive hit. Had Debbie sang the whole thing, it wouldn't have done as well as it did.
She made more money because she deserved it by evidence of her solo album being so successful. The others could have done the same. Look at belinda carlyle. She made her own solo album awY from the gogos and became a terrific success. Cream always rises to the top.
She made more money because she was the only one that wrote any of the hit songs and the songwriters always get royalties that were separate from the performers.
She made more money because she is very beautiful and also a good singer but above all more suited than the others to the pop world after their first album (rock, Paisley), because Prince had fallen in love with her, because with Kelly and Steinberg they had in common the spiritual path and that probably facilitated their relationship and the hits (1988).
The Bangles had unique characteristics. Not only could they play but all four were lead singers. At least three of them sang charted singles in different countries. Their presence on the live scene was impressive especially in the early years. Live performances of I'm not talking in 1984 proved that girls could really play rock in a masculine way. They could also perform a successful power ballad using almost only their voices. No other band could do it.
@@Charles-jl3sv Uhh, disagree. The Bangles both have critical and popular hits. They have sales both locally and internationally. The Bangles are indeed the most successful all-female band ever.

Um. May 23rd, 2017 was the release date? So they entered a Time Machine, went to the future, recorded and released, then went back to their present in 1984?
I always held her as the only one responsible for the first split but I‘m changing my mind after Susanna said: 'The band rejected Eternal Flame, and I was like mortified. I had taken the cassette of Eternal Flame everywhere with me, asking people if I could show them the new song I'd just written. What kind of shit they would have done if the song‘d been left out....
True! But in the previous album, Different Light, there was Following by Micki, a lovely folky acoustic ballad that I really liked but it also didn't sound like a Bangles song but it was accepted.@@scottasbj
The band broke up because the other members became jealous of Susanna because she became a bigger star. I think the pushback against Eternal Flame was because they knew it would be a huge hit and they knew if they recorded it Susanna would become an even bigger star than she already was. If Susanna had taken the songs that she had wrote for Everything and left the band at that point she would have had a massive solo album. In addition to Eternal Flame, she had written In Your Room, I'll Set You Free, Everything I Wanted and Waiting for You for that album.
The Bangles broke up because the other members in the band became jealous of Susanna. It's a shame that the other members couldn't handle Susanna becoming a bigger star. It would be like the Rolling Stones breaking up because Mick jagger was the biggest star.
The Bangles broke up because at least one of them didn't understand that a band is like a sports team. If you win you win together, if you lose you lose together. If one (or more) of them wants to be superior to the others and plays more for herself, the team crumbles. It happened to The Beatles, Pink Floyd and many other bands....among women to the GoGo‘s. The Bangles needed each other. ALL THAT MATTERS IN LIFE IS FACTS. After 10 years from the first breakup, Susanna resigned herself to the lack of success of her solo career and asked her husband to help her to try to reunite the band. He had to apologize to Debbi and Vicki. With Vicki's help they also managed to reunite Micki for a while. After Micki left for good, the Bangles released one studio album in 20 years and no hit singles.....despite Susanna. THESE ARE THE FACTS THE REST IS JUST CHAT, CHAT AND MORE CHAT.
@@giampi180 If any one member was to fault for the breakup of the Bangles, it was Debbie. She was the one that was resentful that she wasn't automatically handed the lead vocals on Walk Like an Egyptian, she was the one that resented Susanna being seen as the pretty one. Debbie was also the one that went to Vicki to cause divisions within the band rather than calling a meeting of the full band when she had issues. Susanna tried for SEVERAL years to get the band back together, but Debbie always refused. It wasn't until they were both mothers and they re-bonded due to their shared motherhood that Debbie was willing to put the band back together. These things can be seen by watching interviews of what Debbie herself said! As for your sports team analogy, some members of the team are far more popular and well known than other members of the team. The issue with the Peterson sisters, especially Debbie, is that they couldn't handle Susanna being the face of the band. A team like the Kansas City Chiefs wouldn't prosper long if every member of the team were resentful of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce because they got more attention. The other members of the Chiefs realize that they have a job to do, and it is OK if they aren't the most popular member of the team. Debbie couldn't do this, and to a lesser extent, neither could Vicki. Susanna couldn't help that she was the one that the magazines were interested in talking to and the one that the fans were most interested in knowing more about. As far as the solo career goes, many 80s acts had trouble connecting with listeners in the 1990s and Susanna was more successful in her solo career than the Bangles have been since reforming their band. BTW, for someone that preaches to know the facts, you can't even get it right that the Bangles released two albums since reforming: "Doll Revolution" and "Sweetheart in the Sun". Don't preach about "the facts" when it seems that you just make most stuff up or leave out important facts within this discussion! Typing a full sentence in all capital letters doesn't win the debate for you and it doesn't give you the final word in the discussion! It seems that you know you are wrong, but simply cannot admit it, which is why you want to use typing in all capital letters as some type of trump card.
@@giampaolo1647 I wasn't saying that they were a "female Rolling Stones" I was making a point that the other members couldn't handle that Susanna was a bigger star. The other issue is that the Peterson sisters saw themselves as being the "John and Paul" of the band, and they saw Susanna and Michael as being the Ringo and George. The Petersons basically saw themselves as being the senior members in the band and the others as lesser members.
Giampi180, the one that didn't understand that was Debbi, who got jealous of all the attention that Susanna got. If you watch the Behind the Music episode, you can see that she was still jealous all those years later. As for your football team analogy, a football team wouldn't work very well if the offensive linemen all got jealous of the quarterback, and they started a bunch of infighting and tried to have every play drawn up where they would be the one that got the football rather than the quarterback.
Virtually ALL of this video is wrong. Eternal Flame was not liked by anyone in the band EXCEPT Hoffs. She argued to keep the song on the album. It was her song from the beginning to the end.
It's not unusual for people to hang together in adversity and common struggles, and then quarrel and split in the face of success. It happens with dysfunctional families all of the time. 🤔
1:54 "... by the time HE got to Berkley, HE was a fan of classic rock bands..." This narration has got to be computer generated, because that's a ridiculous pair of errors. It's an excellent compilation*. But, that narration... this is the 2nd video I've watched and I can't stand it anymore. It's GOT to be computer generated because it's so unnatural. *except for many of the band photos being from the wrong time period, showing the two bass players mixed up in each others' time periods.
@@turrican4d599 ya okay then , it's just that I'm getting sick of all this Jenna is so pretty and so talented nonsense 🙄 because i don't think she really is 🤔 she doesn't even resemble Susanna in my opinion 😉😏

It was so obvious that Vicky couldn't stand how beautiful Susanna was/is. She tried hard to look sexy but just didn't. Had that jealousy not been prevalent, the band would have been ever more successful. Vicky wasn't even a very good guitarist. Sad but true.
In 1994 when the GoGo's reunited for a tour, they took advantage of the breakup of the Bangles to call Vicki Peterson as lead guitarist to replace Charlotte..pregnant. (They didn't call the beautiful Susanna). Judge for yourself who was the best guitarist in the band.
"The group released their first album in 2017...1984" and Hoffs is referred to as "he" at random intervals. Please if your are going to use text-to-voice AI for narration of your videos make sure you actually read and edit the text before using the AI program, and use a program that knows that in English "he" and "she" are not interchangeable. I see the same problems in other videos of yours. The rest of your work is well done and it's a shame that the professionalism you display is marred by these easily-preventable glitches. Or you could hire voice talent from your local college theater or broadcasting school. Students would be glad to get paid what you're spending/wasting on text-to-voice.
11:06 Crap research. The evidence is Susanna Hoffs herself, in an interview with Amy Fleming for The Guardian. "Davitt had recently produced Olivia Newton-John and pranked me by telling me she did her best vocals in the nude. I imagined it would feel like skinny dipping -vulnerable yet freeing - and I decided to try it. Nobody could see me; there was a baffle in front of me and it was dark. After the first song went so well, I became superstitious about it, like in sports where you have to have your rabbit’s foot, and ended up compelled to skinny dip my way through most of the album, including Eternal Flame." Try actually dong research before presenting false information as fact.
The production on this video feels so AI, with the pirated content reversed and all of the retro filtering overlaid on all of the footage w/ the computer generated voice...
I remember watching a music video of the band and the way. Susanna Hoffs came across. She made love to the camera and the camera loved her (I'm sure the producers saw the same thing). It was apparent to me at that time that the band would not last and that she would be going solo. It was a typical record company prick move to retain the physical standout, who was Hoff's, and dispense with the rest of the band so they would only have to pay the one instead of four of them. The record company destroyed a great band and reduced Susanna Hoffs to a mere "product", which was apparently fine with her. That's actually too bad because as a band I thought they were just getting started. And where is Susanna Hoff's now?
Where is Susanna Hoffs now? Still recording & releasing solo records & occasionally performing with The Bangles. And, still looking good at 64 years of age.
@@wylco1959 That's nice. She performs and releases covers of other artists and gets together for the occasional nostalgia act with whomever's left of the original band (If she actually sees any of them at all). It's a living. My point was that the Bangles were a decent band ground up by the suits of the record companies; an exercise which Hoffs participated in and encouraged. But to be fair, maybe the Bangles weren't destined to be anything more than what they were and are. And whatever that is, I'm sure they hoped for much more. At least some of them did.
She might have recorded the album nude. In the music business nude means another thing. Less or non instruments. The instrument you have stand out or alone.

Just a GOREGOUS WOMAN, still in 2023!!
I think my Guitar teacher was in The Bangs. Bob Russell from Bernardsville, NJ. Interesting.
There are only 3 NJ Bangs still living, and that isn't one of them.
How do you know them? Bob was my guitar teacher in high school.@@ericshade9632
Total Dime😊
SHE has always been a attractive woman and I'm sure she is on the inside as well.
Correct. We haven't seen nor heard any issues with/against Susannah Hoffs.
SNL should have done a Bangles Parody with Maya Rudolph as Susanna Hoffs.
The Hottest Woman in Rock PERIOD
Susanna Hoffs is a gorgeous and talented lady!❤❤
I miss ze Bangles.
Pure talent x 4 voice and musical creativity!!
Rather confusing that Susanna is both a he and a she in this video. The title should be corrected.
Absolutely! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🫶🏼
You didn’t mention they also did backing vocals on Cyndi Lauper’s song Change of Heart, the first song on her second album.
They recorded more with Cyndi during the Goonies period.
@@TheWerequat no, no recordings then, but a year earlier they were her opening act during the "Fun Tour"

The Bangles were known as female Beatles not female Rolling Stones.
Wow she looks amazing for 62.

You devil dawg you!! 😈🔥
Many images in this video were reversed and (incorrectly) show her playing left-handed.
You left out several details on how the band got together etc. ,and you got a lot of details just wrong. You should've done more research.
The other gals were jealous of Susanna. Susanna was the most beautiful. Plus her voice was the best.
Thanks for the opinion.
I was born when she was 25 years old. I was born in the wrong era; never got to shoot my shot with her 😞
She only recorded Eternal Flame in the nude, not the entire album. Lazy research like this makes inaccurate statements be taken as fact. Do better.
Thanks for commenting, stay safe!!!
That's exactly what the presenter states. Listen at 10.50 min/s onwards.
Impressive. Hy
Who is "he"?
1:54 "... by the time HE got to Berkley, HE was a fan of classic rock bands..." This narration has got to be computer generated, because that's a ridiculous pair of errors.
It's an excellent compilation*. But, that narration... this is the 2nd video I've watched and I can't stand it anymore. It's GOT to be computer generated because it's so unnatural.
*except for many of the band photos being from the wrong time period, showing the two bass players mixed up in each others' time periods.
I would like to see a Queen like movie about the Bangles. Jenna Ortega would make a great Susanna Hoffs.
Jenna is nowhere as pretty as Susanna was back then 😋🥰

Title should be Sussana or the Bangles..& stop referring to her as 'he'
This was my favourite band, growing up....loved Manic Monday as I was a 16 yr old with a full time job, Walk like an Egyptian & Eternal Flame because they resonated with me.👍
Yeah, referring to her as "he" throws the video off.
Bangles Bass Player Michael Steele (b. Susan Nancy Thomas) had already been CANNED from The Runaways before SH graduated High School.
Hot !!"
You would think an AI voice could pronounce 'Susanna' consistently, AI is here to stay and I don't like it :(
It was so obvious that Vicky couldn't stand how beautiful Susanna was/is.
@@giampaolo1647 Maybe even the GoGo's were envious of Susanna's beauty and wanted Vicki. 😊

1:43 That lookes like Rae Dawn Chong in the white turtle neck sweater, second from the right.

Yeah, I caught that too. Had to go back and re-check my ears. I’m guessing much of this is auto-generated and obviously not checked for errors.

Not a very captivating bio. Very flat business focus.
The production on this video feels so AI, with the pirated content reversed and all of the retro filtering overlaid on all of the footage w/ the computer generated voice...
Humans: Can't live with 'em or without 'em. That's what happened.
The instrument you have stand out or alone.
maybe...but here, nude definitely meant nude as in naked.
