Mopani, bogwood and drift wood all contain tannins which will stain your aquarium and make your aquarium go yellow.
To prevent this yellow aquarium staining, I show 3 Ways to Cure and Prepare Mopani, Driftwood and Bogwood and prepare them for your aquarium.
The first method is to soak the Mopani, bogwood and drift wood in a container for a week or more as this will let the tannins be removed from the wood.
The second method is to soak it, bit to do it in your toilet cistern as this ensure that the water will be fresh for the tannins to be removed efficiently.
The third way is to boil the Mopani, bogwood and drift wood as this is the fastest way to remove the tannins from the Mopani, bogwood and drift wood however this can cost more in energy bills.

I have a piece of Mopani Wood that I had soaked for 2 months. I just used really hot water 2 times a day. I have a Betta so the reduced Tannins are not a problem. As I learned, Bettas like the Tannins. You can add a Polishing Filter to your filter to clear up the water.

Great advice! I'm going to try the toilet bowl method tomorrow. ZI have 4 large pieces of Mopani to break in. Good thing I have three toilets in my home! LOL This gives "log" a whole new meaning! LOL

I've been some give free bog wood but has been not used for a year do I still need to soak has I've never use this before , In a aquarium .
When you boil wood there is a chance you damage the cellstructure, causing it to rot faster in aquarium.
Also the tannings have good ingrediënts for your plants, fish etc. Anyhow, I would use active coal to get rid of the tanning

So I've been boiling my small piece of mopani for about 24 hours off and on. More realistically, about 12 hours constant accumulatively. The water is still turning ridiculously red. Is the hot water bringing the color out, or do I still need to keep boiling it?
is toilet water in general safe? Is it treated like tap-water (such as metals, chlorine removed)?

Im boiling and then washing it few times a day for the past 4 days and each time i boil it still gives out colour... What to do? How can i get rid of the colour?

Put your fish in the toilet cistern and you can change the water much easier than bucket & tubing. :)
PetSmart and I’ve literally spent two whole days boiling it, and it’s still leaching tannins. I’ve also soaked it over night twice and no color tint when soaked overnight. Any help???!!!

u can also use a standard clear wood varnish about 5 or 6 coats this will block the tannins inside the wood and prevent it from leaking out, its the fastest method ive used it for years never had any problems with it.
+Paul Roadz This only works if you are getting the wood for decoration only, if you have any fish that eat wood, or like to rasp on it, you need to do it the hard way. ;P

ammonia and chlorine.seachem has a product that will neutralize them.1 cap full per 55gal and it does very well.i use 1 cap full in my tank twice a week.1 time at 20% water change and then 3 days later to knock down ammonia from fish and food waste.you have a nice tank.as far as tannins,my lighting is 4-7w corn cob LED 'warm white'' standard base bugs and sockets which makes a stained tinge color.the fish are extremely relaxed.however,if you have live plants these LEDS probably wont work. as i have never tried them on live plants,i do not suggest them.
