  • Today's video covers everything about Mopani Driftwood! This driftwood can be found in almost all pet stores - both local and chain stores - as it is so popular! It has many similarities to another common driftwood known as Malaysian Driftwood, but it does have some qualities that make it unique. In this video, I go over these similarities and differences, the characteristics, benefits and possible disadvantages, what to do before adding it to your tank, and more.
    Short on time or have a specific topic you're concerned about? Here's the breakdown:

    Note: There is a clip of a betta in what appears to be a bowl in this video, it is not mine, but a stock video from Canva! It's the only clip I could find of some fin damage, as it's common in bowls/stressful environments. I have used bowls in the past as I'm sure many of us have, but I don't anymore! :)

    FAQS:
    Q: How many fish tanks do I have?
    A: One! But I often film my mom's tanks as well, so you will see more than the two on my channel!
    Q: Will I ever get a betta sorority/breed bettas?
    A: Nope and nope! Both require a lot of work, money, and time to perfect- neither of which I'm willing or able to provide!
    Q: How do you name your fish?
    A: Sometimes I'm inspired by a character in a show or movie, or someone in real life like a celebrity. More often than not, however, I literally just choose whatever pops into my head- its like names I love but would never name my future children for whatever reason haha

    Very informative! Just got 4 large pieces of this stuff earlier this evening for my 75GAL Map Turtle/fish tank project. Planning on attaching a bunch of live plants to them.

    Great video!! I love wood in my tanks...and I have spiderwood in my 5g, it leaches tannins like crazy...had to use API Crystal bio-chemistry zorb filters to clear it out

      Thanks! And that's really interesting that you got so much tannins out of your spiderwood! I haven't noticed any tannins come out of mine unless I boil it for a while - and even then it's just a slight discoloration, nowhere near the amount I get from boiling Malaysian driftwood. I guess you were lucky!

    Do you suggest using oleander wood for a cichlid tank?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  Рік тому +1

      I don’t know too much about cichlids, but from my understanding it’s ok to use a little, but not too much and definitely boil it beforehand to get a lot of the tannins out! Cichlids prefer hard water, and most woods contribute to softer water!

    I have a piece of mopani wood that's approximately 4" x 11". It fits vertically in my 3.5 gallon aquarium. My concern is, will that size produce too much tannin for my small tank? I don't want to poison my betta. Thanks.

      It won't poison it and you can always do a water change if the water becomes too dark. You can also presoak it as the video suggests.

    They do sell mini pieces for betta tanks at petsmart.

      Oh nice! I'm happy that some PetSmarts have that option. I've checked almost all the PetSmarts in my city and all of them only had large pieces like this one.

    what's the name of the green plants you got in your tank behind you?

    • @BetterBetta
      @BetterBetta  Рік тому +1

      That’s actually hornwort, a very popular plant! When it grows enough it sinks, I have shrimp in the tank so like it down there to provide cover for them. 😊 You can find it almost anywhere, I got it from Petsmart!

    Hi guys, I've added Mopane driftwood to my 63 gallon aquarium without boiling it 😱 How long does it take for tannins to disappear and water to clear? Internal filter + sponge filter currently being used. Should I remove the driftwood, boil it and then put it back in the aquarium? 🤔 Any tips or advice will be highly appreciated 🙏 Thank you

      I pre boiled my mopani and I still get quite a bit of tannins in my water after every change, and it’s been in there for many months. However, if you don’t mind the tannins, there’s no need to take it out and boil it - but you will be dealing with them for a long time! I find with my one piece in my 9 gallon, it clears after about a week, but I’m sure it would be different in a much larger tank or with different amounts of wood. 😊

      @@BetterBetta thank you very much, I really appreciate that. After doing some research (UA-cam 😁), I now understand that these tannins are not harmful to the fish at all. I've embraced the slightly 'darker' look to my aquarium. I've got 10 juvenile cichlids that loves playing and chilling in and around the driftwood. I'm keeping it until they grow a bit bigger. Your response just put me more at ease - thank you again 😊🙏
