+George Keskeny If you're ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie!
I used to listen to this album in my early teens and would lose myself in these lyrics....amazing...get the chills all these years later listening to them...cheers for posting x
The song that first really blew me away by David and still does...superb job on the video:gives this great so g the quality accompany it deserves so many thanks
Nice job! I have only just caught this and it's one of my favourite Bowie songs, You've done a really nice job here of matching everything up and i do KNOW a lot of effort goes into something like this. THanks for posting. LOVE IT! Ken
What does personal madness mean compared to a world gone mad? This is my favourite Bowie song from my favourite Bowie LP - The Man Who Sold The World depicts madness, murder, megalomania, sexual depravity, bleak loneliness and the dark dreams of the Gods, with music that totally supports the lyrics - particularly Tony Visconti's doom laden bass, Mick Ronson's fabulous guitar playing and the droning male backing vocals. Uncomfortable, challenging and totally brilliant! Thanks for posting...
Well done..great to hear this song again. Everyone says it is out Vietnam. I always felt it was about his half brother, Terry. He was a schizophrenic and inmate of Cane Hill mental institution (pictured on the original U.S. cover of The Man Who Sold the World) until his suicide in 1985
that was fucking AWESOME- please do this for every song I love-what youve done is eqally profound as what David wrote and recorded-it's perfect-just perfect-and I bought this record 37 years ago- you blew me away-
it is strange and haunting wenever i hear this song as I have spent a stay in a mental institution dual dignosis drug and mental and ther wer people there who were so helpless and simply did not want to face the world even when asked to leave some stayed a night or two in their rooms until caught, I was dying to get out but some people would simply rather play with all the madmen
I'm drunk too. Insane, yes. But I fake it in the world big time. But only because I love the world. And only because they're all humans, and crimenently, that's good!
Thank you for the blessing! Aren't you the same Mhark67 who, 3 months ago said these were excellent visuals for this song??? Ah how fickle we are!!!(*_-)
Thank you for your nice comments. I'm not so young..I was at the infamous Pink Floyd concert in the Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 1977 (the one where Roger Waters spat on a member of the audience)!! Your English is much better than my Portuguese!
I honestly don't know but you're right it's similar and some memory at the back of my head is stirring when I look at your comment. I'll let you know if anything surfaces!!
Thanks dunny for the lovely comment. She Shook Me Cold took an age, mostly trying to find images in the public domain to suit my idea!! I'm glad you enjoyed them. Frances
Thanks. You are only the second person to ask about the ending! I put the mad looking lady in and made sure that when she taps in time to the music, she's slightly out of sync, just like the madmen. My friend told me that everything is slightly out of sync on youtube so I was wasting my time!! lol
I read somewhere that when andiginous tribes ( Aborigines in paticular) mask their hair with ochre for religious rites it is likely becaus ethe clay is charged with magnetic properties. Bowie has ocher hair in this era. In a doc I watched the guy said he was some freak with ochre hair and it was like "ding" this man is a freakin' genius (Bowie) .He never ceases to amaze me with his brilliance, even when he is not trying to be.
Thanks for the lovely comment. I use three things...moviemaker, trial and error lol! Photoshop is supposed to be great but expensive to buy and difficult to learn I'm told.
Day after day They send my friends away To mansions cold and grey To the far side of town Where the thin men stalk the streets While the sane stay underground Day after day They tell me I can go They tell me I can blow To the far side of town Where it's pointless to be high 'Cause it's such a long way down Day after day They take some brain away Then turn my face around To the far side of town And tell me that it's real Then ask me how I feel Here I stand Foot in hand Talking to my wall I'm not quite right at all Don't set me free I'm as helpless as can be My libido's split on me Gimme some good ol' lobotomy 'Cause I'd rather stay here With all the madmen Than perish with the sad men Roaming free And I'd rather play here With all the madmen For I'm quite content They're all as sane as me Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Zane, Zane, Zane Ouvre le Chien Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: David Bowie
@Landulphcounter I do agree Bowie was at his best in this early period (man who sold, hunky and ziggy)...the music is deep...and Ronno contributing in full !
I looked for ways to incorporate something into the video that would reflect this sentiment. Strange one especially because 'ouvre le chien' (open the dog) is at the end....but then it is about madmen!
Ah I see I put 'that's right' in the wrong place. I was actually agreeing with miniorangepanther above! I think the songs of that era were undoubtedly influenced by his brother's illness as we are all influenced by what's going on in our lives. Having said that, I absolutely agree with your take on it.
I love that all my favorite Bowie songs are not plastered on commercial radio, diminishing their true depth and artistic beauty. Thank you.
The absolute best bowie! great video MICK RONSON!!!! wow what a sound
a few months later and it's almost unbearable to hear. as a child I never cried very much. at 52 I have never cried as much.

I'm drunk too. Insane, yes. But I fake it in the world big time. But only because I love the world. And only because they're all humans, and crimenently, that's good!

Yes there isn't one song I don't like on the album. Had a look at your channel you have some great favs...will be visiting!!
hecka good song!
The thin men stalking the streets is a creepy conjured image!
I honestly don't know but you're right it's similar and some memory at the back of my head is stirring when I look at your comment. I'll let you know if anything surfaces!!
I saw the best minds of my generation
great vid love the art, its very BOWIE. you should collect some bowie art and make a vid paying homage to that.
Thanks dunny for the lovely comment. She Shook Me Cold took an age, mostly trying to find images in the public domain to suit my idea!! I'm glad you enjoyed them. Frances

My friend told me that everything is slightly out of sync on youtube so I was wasting my time!! lol
Yes it is. I like Bowie's lyrics because they make me think.
lol, oops. Thinking too hard on that one. Thanks for setting the record straight for me:)
Bowie's best albumn all songs. The beginnings of heavy metal on some of the songs.
Thanks very much Ken, I'm glad you liked it. ~ Frances
i love this
A very good observation. I also think it'd be cool if it were a reference! I suppose both lines describe despair in their different ways.
Yep! Timeless song.
great photo, thanks
Good spotting!! Thanks
Thanks. I thought the bags were very clever. I think they were part of an advertising campaign.
"Insanity is a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world."
Anthony Edward Visconti - great stuff man - at first I thought it was Herbie Flowers
This song is definitely about the mental health system. This is one I would use to do a Mental Health Illness Playlist.
blessings
Thank you very much.
I think so too, it's one of my favourite songs. That's why I decided to make the video.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!

Yes. In some circles I've no doubt it's considered glamorous to be insane...or at least eccentric! :)

Day after day
They send my friends away
To mansions cold and grey
To the far side of town
Where the thin men stalk the streets
While the sane stay underground
Day after day
They tell me I can go
They tell me I can blow
To the far side of town
Where it's pointless to be high
'Cause it's such a long way down
Day after day
They take some brain away
Then turn my face around
To the far side of town
And tell me that it's real
Then ask me how I feel
Here I stand
Foot in hand
Talking to my wall
I'm not quite right at all
Don't set me free
I'm as helpless as can be
My libido's split on me
Gimme some good ol' lobotomy
'Cause I'd rather stay here
With all the madmen
Than perish with the sad men
Roaming free
And I'd rather play here
With all the madmen
For I'm quite content
They're all as sane as me

: ) Back atcha - it's Baltic here!!!
@GothicGirlBassist Yeah, I'd like to do that but can never find much of his art on the net!!
@thegasworks okay then, but is it a problem how watching a video of somebody playing "Fame" on Rock Band 3 got me attracted to bowie's music?
great song well made thegasworks !
Yeah, I love it!
let me add just one thing: the "zane-zane-zane": ingenious simplicity (can't get it off my mind).
this song is Glamour !!!!!!!!!!!!
Must have another listen to Bewlay Bros. - I didn't get that at the end.
Aye matey, dey do...
No one quite equaled him! Thanks :)
