      @@malnutritionboy No shit, lots of cultures did. The subject was flaying people alive, which the Aztecs had a god devoted to the act of. The first mention live flaying (in the Aztec's own telling of their history) was to provoke a war with a tribe that was not hostile. The Aztecs removed the skin from the daughter of the chief of a tribe they were in peace talks with and had a boy dance around in her skin before the chief because the god of war demanded it. Again, this is the Aztec's own history. They were proud of being heartless. If the smaller tribes also flayed people then it's a good thing the Spaniards came and converted them into people.

In Battle the standard whether that of a century or cohort, would help identify a unit position to commanders at a distance. Up close the standard would be rallying point it the confusing melee of battle. In garrison, the signifer being a senior and trusted soldier, act as a century treasurer, helping ordinary legionaries manage personal savings and managing unit funds.

    Regarding the LTTE's use of leopard pattern, the uniforms were introduced sometime between 1991 and 1993 and was used exclusively by the Chiruththaigal (leopard) commando brigade, which consisted in large part of war orphans. However it was reserved for ceremonial purposes, which is why what was likely a single batch of uniforms survived well till the end of the war. I am writing a history of the LTTE's uniforms and camo use, and I might have more info when that is published.

      It's African culture period not just central Africa the guy who made this video is misleading or lack knowledge on the subject matter. leopard skin is African culture period. It comes from the San Khoi tribe in southern Africa which the zulus adopted in ancient times also the Nubians used the leopard skin before the Egyptians it's just that Egyptians had contact with outsiders and they came across Egypt but it wasn't originated in Egypt nor spread because the Zulus all that is incorrect man this so fabricated it's tweaking my nerves.

      @@dgax65 It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the misinformation of this video it's common sense man. He stated that leopard is from Central and South Africa so it would make sense that it started in that region before any groups of other people. Egypt is not central or South. How can it start with Egypt when they got it from the nubians and it has always been in Nubian culture since their very beginnings as to Egypt because they coexisted along the Nile? Did he forget to mention that Nubians wearing leopard skin around 700 bc which is a historical fact displayed by the 25th dynasty of Egypt or just purposely mislead? At that time the first European civilization what we know as the Greeks didn't even exist just a spec.
      As I stated before the San Khoi are the Africans that spread all across multiple regions due to the fact that they are the oldest people on this planet genetically and in their culture in history they been wearing leopard and just many different animals and print first before any other races existed including the Africans.
      You see it's a difference between drawing animals prints and wearing it for ceremonial cultural purposes. Now what is the oldest civilization or people wearing it as the Egyptians as to all the Africans and see how old it is outside the continent doesn't even come close in age. I can draw a bird in stone but it's not the same as wearing the feathers as a crown two total different aspects. It's in Igbo tradition, Yoruba all pre colonial.

    • @TeeSpells
      @TeeSpells Рік тому

      @@dgax65 The moral point of the story is that it doesn't matter how small the misinformation is but to give credit to people who created it and tell a proper orgins story because it's seems as if it's fabrication of lies with a bias point of view.

While scolding me, you made some obviously insular claims that are unsupportable and probably incorrect. I tried to point this out to you and your response is to change the argument. I've got to ask; "How does this even involve me?" You had a problem with the video. So why didn't you comment and call out the video's creator? I'm going to answer that for you. It is because you are a troll who just likes to complain. If you are so certain of your encyclopedic knowledge of uniform history, start your own damn channel. But you won't do that will you? Couple of mistakes on winged hussars- Wings where only for display while actual sounds came from very long pannats hanged from the upper secions of the lance. Against artistic depictions moust popular where hides of wolfs and local predatory animals while leopard skins where moust prestigious yet least resistant to blows (as moust armor had no back plate so thick hide served as low weight armor alternative).
    I'm also prety sure that Companion cavalery of Alexander the great had same custom and that was the main insporation for polish hussars. I'm still not convinced about Serbian connection of hussars in poland as moust of traditional parts of the armamet as sabre where reffered as "hungarian" during the period- That rather suggests that serbians where only serving under hungarians while to Poland it came entierly from hungarian stock.

    I may be wrong about this but I think the Leopard Skins of the winged hussars were also tradition carried over from the original Hussars of the Balkans, lightly armored cavalry and raiders who were known to dress in exotic uniforms including pelts (possibly because of ottoman influence in the Region)
    You can even see some of that tradition in the Fancy colorful uniform of Hussars all over europe way into the 20th century and even today for ceremonial uses, even if the Leopard skin seems to have fallen out of fashion After the napoleonic wars.
    I think in general the european use of Leopard skin was sort of an Expression of the common fascination and attraction to the "exotic" namely the Middle east and egypt that began in the early modern era.

    There are some misconceptions in the comments about winged Hussars. They were very colorful cavalry, they used real pelts of wild animals like leopards, tigers, cheetahs, lions, bears, and other predators. They also used dyed skins that imitated leopard skins etc, and they were often very colorful: white skin with red dots, red skin with white dots, red and black, etc- these were popular in Lithuania in XVII. It was common to call pelts a leopard. Also add expensive fabrics, rugs, (sometimes more expensive than exotic plts). It was fashion, 273 years of hussars pride, style, swag, and fashion.

    Great material but you should go deeper into winged hussars. The idea was based on Hungarian/Serbian cavalry due to the fact that our elected king was Hungarian. They consisted of Polish (rich) noblemen, pressively highly trained and dangerous. Best regards

    Minor nitpick/addition, but Ares/Mars is a bad example of Greek/Roman gods being the same, as thats a case where there actually are differences :D
    Mars has a whole load of farming connotations that Ares as far as we know lacks, iirc Mars was originally an agriculture god before syncretising into the war god when the Romans copy and pasted.
    (I think most of the gods were basically the same but with slight attitude changes at times. IIRC Jupiter is a bit more severe and stately than Zeus?)
